II ESCOLA NACIONAL DE CARBOIDRATOS
II ESCOLA NACIONAL DE CARBOIDRATOS
• The fibrous component that provides strength
• Exists with a consistent set of intermolecular distances between parallel chains that are so closely packed that water can not penetrate
FUNCTION OF CELLULOSE IN THE TREE
II ESCOLA NACIONAL DE CARBOIDRATOS
• Cellulose is the main component of pulp; together with hemicelluloses, accounts for the pulp yield
• It determines the properties of the pulp, especially– Strength– Bonding– Paper sheet characteristics
• Cellulose is colorless
VALUE OF CELLULOSE IN PULP

STARCH
• -(1->4)-β-D-Glup-(1->4)-β-D-• High DP• Insoluble in water• Enriched during pulping and
bleaching
• -(1->4)-α-D-Glup-(1->4)-α-D-• Low DP• Soluble in water• Forms colored complexes with

CELLULOSE SUPRAMOLECULAR STRUCTURE
Mixture of crystalline and amorphous structurescrystalline amorphous crystalline
All the other wood polymers are amorphous Hemicelluloses Lignin Starch
II ESCOLA NACIONAL DE CARBOIDRATOS
~20-35% abundance in wood Polysaccharide of different sugar monomersDP of only 100-200 and completely amorphousGeneral structural featuresOften branches of 1-2 sugarsGenerally 1-4 β-linkages in the main chain
Two principal types in hardwoods and softwoods Xylans - major type in hardwoodsGlucomannans - major type in softwoods
GENERAL HEMICELLULOSE STRUCTURE
II ESCOLA NACIONAL DE CARBOIDRATOS
• Provides bonding between cellulose “rods”
– Through H-bonding
– Through direct linkages
• Improves the structural property of wood
FUNCTION OF HEMICELLULOSES
II ESCOLA NACIONAL DE CARBOIDRATOS
• Thermoplastic property is important to bonding in of some types of wood fiber (and the preparation of particle board)
• Low ability to absorb moisture (hygroscopicity) provides a barrier to water penetration
– Acts as a bulking agent that reduces dimensional changes in the cell wall with moisture changes
• Imparts rigidity and stiffness to cell walls
FUNCTION OF LIGNIN IN THE TREE
II ESCOLA NACIONAL DE CARBOIDRATOS
• Little value - that is why we try to remove
• Makes fibers stiff by decreasing bonding, resulting in paper of low strength and high opacity
• Lignin-rich fibers has good dimensional stability, i.e., does not shrink much when dried
• Color-causing component in pulp
• Good “fuel” - burning provides energy to the mill
• Possible raw material for the production of commercially useful organic chemicals
VALUE OF LIGNIN IN PULP
II ESCOLA NACIONAL DE CARBOIDRATOS
• Klason lignin– Hydrolysis of wood with 72% H2SO4
– Accuracy requires determining the “acid soluble” lignin
– Highly condensed, a poor representation of protolignin
• Kappa number– Treat sample with an excess of KMnO4 at pH ~1, and back
titrate after 10 minutes
– Kappa # x 0.15 = % lignin for unbleached pulps
LIGNIN QUANTIFICATION
II ESCOLA NACIONAL DE CARBOIDRATOS
LIGNINA
• polímero–unidade de fenil-propano– tridimensional
• amorfo• esbranquiçada - marrom• insolúvel
–degradação à menor peso molecular

FIBRA
LAMELAMÉDIA
II ESCOLA NACIONAL DE CARBOIDRATOS
• Give odor and color to the heartwood
• Provide fungal and insect resistance
• Fats provide an energy source to the cells
• Effect onthe permeability and physical properties– Specific gravity– Hardness– Compressive strength
FUNCTION OF EXTRACTIVES IN THE TREE
II ESCOLA NACIONAL DE CARBOIDRATOS
EXTRATIVOS
• extrativos são misturas complexas de vários compostos
II ESCOLA NACIONAL DE CARBOIDRATOS
PROPRIEDADES DOS EXTRATIVOS
• pouco solúveis em água
• pouco solúveis em álcali
II ESCOLA NACIONAL DE CARBOIDRATOS
• Detriment in the pulp because of
– Higher consumption of bleaching chemicals
– Pitch formation
• Profitable markets for several of the extractives
• Cost of isolation versus selling price is worthwhile in the case of softwood extractives
• Processing of extractives is often done by chemical companies

II ESCOLA NACIONAL DE CARBOIDRATOS
• Wood is principally composed of three polymers:– Cellulose - the main component in pulp (and paper)
– Hemicelluloses - minor component in chemical pulps
– Lignin - the component we remove to get high quality pulps
• In chemical pulping and bleaching we wish to con-serve the cellulose and hemicelluloses in their native states, while degrading and removing the lignin
• The better we do this, the more selective the process
WOOD POLYMERS AND PULP PRODUCTION
II ESCOLA NACIONAL DE CARBOIDRATOS
• The major wood components are polymers• Carbohydrate polymers generally have:
– 6-Membered-ring sugars linked β-1,4– An end unit that can open to a linear aldehyde form
• Cellulose, the principal component that we try to conserve when making paper, is composed of:– 10-15,000 glucose units linked β-1,4– Crystalline and amorphous forms
• Hemicelluloses are amorphous polymers – ~ 100-200 DP of mixed sugar units– Generally branched, which for xylans contain acid sugars
WOOD COMPONENT STRUCTURE SUMMARY
II ESCOLA NACIONAL DE CARBOIDRATOS
WOOD COMPONENT STRUCTURE SUMMARY
• Lignin has phenyl propane units that:– Are randomly linked by ether and C-C bonds– Are extensively branched– Contain phenol, ether, and alcohol functional groups– Are occasionally linked to polysaccharides (LCC)
• The extractive portion of wood is a mixture of:– Resin and fatty acids– Fats and unsaponifiables– Terpenes– Phenolics (lignans, tannins, etc.)
