11. Grounding or Polarization This video unit may be
equipped with either a polarized 2-wire AC(Alternating Current) line plug (a plug having one
blade wider than the other) or 3-wire grounding type
plug, a plug having a third (grounding) pin.
The 2-wire polarized plug will fit into the power outlet
only one way. This is a safety feature. If you are
unable to insert the plug fully into the outlet, tryreversing the plug. If the plug still fails to fit, contact
your electrician to replace your obsolete outlet. Do
not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized plug.
The 3-wire grounding type plug will fit into a
grounding type power outlet. This is a safety feature.
If you are unable to insert the plug into the outlet,contact your electrician to replace your obsolete
outlet. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the
grounding type plug.
12. Power-Cord Protection Power-supply cords
should be routed so that they are not likely to be
walked on or pinched by items placed upon oragainst them, paying particular attention to cords of
plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point
where they exit from the unit.
13. Outdoor Antenna Grounding If an outside
antenna or cable system is connected to the video
unit, be sure the antenna or cable system isgrounded so as to provide some protection against
voltage surges and built-up static charges. Part 1 of
the Canadian Electrical Code, in USA Section 810of the National Electrical Code, provides information
with respect to proper grounding of the mast andsupporting structure, grounding of the lead-in wire toan antenna discharge unit, size of grounding
conductors, location of antenna discharge unit,
connection to grounding electrodes, andrequirements for the grounding electrode.
14. Lightning For added protection of this video unitreceiver during a lightning storm, or when it is left
unattended and unused for long periods of time,
unplug it from the wall outlet and disconnect theantenna or cable system. This will prevent damage
to the video unit due to lightning and power-line
surges.

15. Power Lines An outside antenna system should
not be located in the vicinity of overhead power lines
or other electric light or power circuits, or where it canfall into such power lines or circuits. When installing
an outside antenna system, extreme care should be
taken to keep from touching such power lines orcircuits as contact with them might be fatal.
16. Overloading Do not overload wall outlets and
extension cords as this can result in a risk of fire orelectric shock.
17. Objects and Liquids Never push objects of any
kind into this video unit through openings as theymay touch dangerous voltage points or short out
parts that could result in a fire or electric shock.Never spill liquid of any kind onto the video unit.
18. Servicing Do not attempt to service this video unit
yourself as opening or removing covers may expose
you to dangerous voltage or other hazards. Refer allservicing to qualified service personnel.
19. Damage Requiring Service Unplug this video unit
from the wall outlet and refer servicing to qualifiedservice personnel under the following conditions:

USE & LOCATION
TO AVOID SHOCK HAZARD ... Your Camcorder and power supply should not be exposed to rain or moisture. Donot connect the power supply or operate your Camcorder if it gets wet. Your Camcorder has been designed for
outdoor use, however it is not designed to sustain direct exposure to water, rain, sleet, snow, sand, dust, or a direct
splashing from a pool or even a cup of coffee. This action could permanently damage the internal parts of yourCamcorder. Do not attempt to disassemble this unit. There are no user serviceable parts inside. Unplug your
Camcorder from the power supply before cleaning.

Supplying Power
1 Connect and plug in the Cable asshown. POWER Lamp will light.
2 Attach the battery as shown tocharge. Charge lamps on the AC Adaptor will
flash and then turn solid red toindicate current charge level. When
all 3 lamps are constantly on, thebattery is fully charged. (approx. 1hour) Expect approx. 1 hour 15minutes of operation when fullycharged (EVF usage).
3 Remove the Battery.Slide the Battery out and then lift up.
POWERLamp
50 80 100%
The three Charge Lamps 50%, 80% and 100% flash and then remain lit one afteranother to indicate how much the Battery has been charged. When all three lamps arelit, charging is finished.
The Charge Lamps give a good approximate indication of the charging condition undernormal ambient temperature. However, when charging at high or low temperature, thecharge lamps may differ considerably from the actual charging condition.
Battery Charging Confirmation MarkerUse this marker as a reminder to yourselfwhen the battery is fully charged or in needof a charge. This marker performs nofunction and is for your reference only.
The Battery is no longer serviceable ifthe operation time is very short, evenafter a sufficient charge.

Supplying Power
To remove the Battery:Slide the Battery upward while sliding theBATTERY RELEASE.
Caution: Charge only with specified charger. The Battery can be charged within a
temperature range of 32 F (0 C) and104 F (40 C).
The Battery may be warm after chargingor just after use. This is normal.
Do not use an insufficiently charged orworn out Battery.
In extremely cold surroundings, Battery
charging time will increase.
Safety precautions: Do not get the Battery near, or dispose of
in, fire. Do not directly connect (short circuit) the
positive (+) and negative () terminals. Never attempt to disassemble or reas-
semble the Battery.
To avoid damage to the Battery: Do not drop or jar the Battery. Use the Battery with specified models
only. If the Battery is used in extremely high
temperatures, a safety device willautomatically prevent operation.
To insure longer battery life: While not in use, remove Battery from
the Palmcorder and AC Adaptor andstore in a cool, dark, dry place. If youleave the Battery in the Palmcorder or onthe AC Adaptor, the Battery will no longerbe rechargeable.
Keep the Battery terminals clean.

inserting Cassette When you insert a cassette that ispartially recorded, use the Edit SearchFunction to search for the position fromwhich you want to record again.Especially when you want to record againon a cassette that is already fullyrecorded, be sure to first locate theposition where you want to add the newrecording, before starting to record.

Note: If hand strap is tight it may prevent Cassette Compartment Cover
from fully opening for tape insertion or ejection. Loosen hand strap ifnecessary.
When inserting the cassette, make sure it faces in the right directionand then push in completely.

1 Slide Light into the Built-in LightMount.Be sure it locks into place.
2 Press LIGHT ON.
3 Press LIGHT again to OFF.
To remove the Light:Press LIGHT RELEASE and slide the Lightout of the mount.
Caution:This light becomes hot during operation.Make sure nothing covers the Light duringoperation.

Using the Light
Using the light will reduce battery operating time. If using the enhancement Light for an extended period of time, be sure to provide
ventilation when using it in a hot environment. Be sure LIGHT is set to OFF when not in use. Do not attempt to lift or carry the Palmcorder by holding the Enhancement Light. If light bulb needs to be replaced, take Light to your nearest authorized servicentre.

Attaching the Shoulder Strap
1 Loosen the strap from the Buckle andcreate a loop.
2 Pull the strap firmly through theBuckle to shorten or lengthen thestrap.

2 Remove the buckles from one end ofthe strap.
3 Thread the strap (with no buckle)through the Light Holder so that itfaces outward. Then reinsert thebuckle.
4 Thread the strap ends through theStrap Attachment Rings.
5 Reinsert the strap ends through theirbuckles. Make sure the straps are not
twisted.

1 Press MENU to display the Camera orVCR mode menu screen (page 21).
2 Rotate JOG KEY to select DISPLAYSETTING , and then press JOG KEYto display the DISPLAY SETTINGmenu screen.

3 Rotate JOG KEY to select CLOCK-SET , and then press JOG KEY to setto ON (pages 23, 25). The DATE/TIME SETTING menu
appears.
4 Rotate JOG KEY to select the desirednumbers, then, press JOG KEY downto fix that portion and move to the next.Adjust the shaded items for the year,month, day, hour, and minute.
If you should pass the current year,continue pressing down on the JOG KEYuntil the year appears again.
A built-in battery maintains clockoperation. If the Palmcorder is notconnected to a power source for a fewmonths, the built-in battery may dischargeand CLOCK BATTERY indicationappears (page 29).
When time setting is completed, pressthe MENU to start the clock.

Warning Indications
If the Palmcorder is in CAMERA mode without acassette inserted, will flash and TAPE NOT
INSERTED will appear for 5 seconds. Recording willnot start.
If the Palmcorder is in CAMERA mode with the cassette
sliding record tab opened, will flash and CHECKREC TAB will appear for 5 seconds. Recording will notstart.
When Audio dub is performed and the sliding record
tab is open, or a blank portion of tape is detected, will flash and CANNOT REC will appear for 5seconds.
When the tape is about to end in REC mode, ENDwill flash and TAPE END will appear for 5 seconds.

Started
When an AUDIO DUB is attempted on a pre-recordedLP tape, CANNOT REC LP-MODE will appear for 5seconds.
If excessive moisture condenses in the unit,WARNING will flash, DEW DETECTED willappear, and the Palmcorder will automatically turn
OFF in 15 seconds.In this case, wait until the indicator no longer flasheswhen your Palmcorder is turned on again.
When a battery recharge is necessary, WARNINGwill flash, LOW BATTERY will appear, and thePalmcorder will automatically turn OFF in 15 seconds(page 26).
When the built-in lithium clock battery is discharged,CLOCK BATTERY will appear. To re-charge thelithium clock battery, connect the AC Adaptor to the
Palmcorder. Recharging takes approx. 4 hours.Reset the clock after charging.
If you play a tape recorded in a format other thanNTSC or you try to copy a copy-protected tape,INCOMPATIBLE DATA will continuously appear.This message also appears if REC is pressed whenDV is input and the copy of copyrighted information isprohibited. This message also appears when a copyprohobited signal portion of recording is played back.
When the LCD monitor is rotated 180 so that it facesthe same direction as the lens, the ! mark indicatesthat a warning message exists. To view the warning,return the LCD monitor to the original position.

1 Set POWER to CAMERA. The POWER lamp lights red. Be sure POWER
is fully turned toCAMERA position.
2 With the Viewfinder Eye Cup up toyour eye, adjust the VisionAdjustment Control to your eyesight(page 9).
3 Press RECORD/PAUSE to startrecording.The Tally LED will be on.To turn the Tally LED off, see TALLYLED on page 23.Press RECORD/PAUSE again topause recording.To reduce microphone wind noise,set the WIND-CUT (PV-DV400-K only)to ON (see WIND-CUT on page 23).

When the Palmcorder is aimed at
excessively bright objects, or bright lights,a vertical bar may appear in the picture.This is a normal characteristic of the CCDpick-up device. Try to avoid this wheneverpossible.
WARNING: Do not leave the Palmcorder with the
EVF aimed directly at the sun as thismay cause damage to the internal partsof the EVF.

Before you begin... Connect the Palmcorder to a power source
(pages 12, 13). Insert a cassette with record tab closed
(page 15).
The LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) monitorcan be used while recording.
Camera Recording
1Press LCD-OPEN to unlock the LCDmonitor.
2 Swing the LCD monitor fully openand adjust the angle.
The LCD monitor will automaticallyturn on.
When the LCD monitor is completelyclosed, it will shut off automatically tosave power.
Adjust the LCD Brightness and/orcolour of the LCD monitor ifnecessary.
3 Start recording (page 30). Using the LCD monitor will reduce battery

letter R will appear in the EVFand LCD monitor.To exit the RepeatPlayback mode,turn thePalmcorder OFF.
When a tape recorded in LP mode onanother digital video camera is playedback on this unit, the picture may appearmosaic.

Index Forward/Reverse Search
Top ScanIf you hold down the INDEX SEARCH morethan 2 seconds, the Palmcorder will scanfor scenes (or PhotoShots) and playbackthe first few seconds of each.To cancel this function, press PLAY orSTOP.
1 Place the Palmcorder in the VCR STOPmode.
2 Press INDEX SEARCH fast forward orrewind the number of recordings(indexes) forward or back you want toview. The Palmcorder will advance orrewind to the desired recording andautomatically PLAY.
The number of times you pressed thebutton is displayed in the EVF and theLCD monitor if you set INDEX on the VCRmenu to SCENE (page 24).(Ex., if you press the button three times,S3 will appear.)
If the interval between scenes is less than1 minute, index search may not operate
properly. Response time between pressing thebutton and change in the scene numberis quite slow. Do not press the INDEXSEARCH rapidly and continuously.
During Reverse Index Search, playbackwill not begin until a tape rewinds all theway to the beginning.

Precautions for the MultiMediaCard
While the MultiMediaCard is being read, do not remove it, turn off the power, orsubject it to vibrations and shocks.
Do not leave the MultiMediaCard in a place with high temperature, exposed to directsunlight, or where electromagnetic waves and static electricity can be generated.
Electromagnetic waves, static electricity, malfunction of the Digital Video Palmcorderor of the MultiMediaCard itself could erase the data recorded on it. To prevent theloss of picture data, we recommend that you make a backup copy on a cassette oron the computer.
Do not bend or drop the MultiMediaCard as this could damage the MultiMediaCardor the captured contents.
Do not touch the connector on the rear edge of the MultiMediaCard with your fingersand take care that no dirt, dust or water enters it.
Do not affix other labels to the MultiMediaCard face or back as Card insertion/removal may become impossible.

Photo TitleYou can record PhotoShot images from aMultiMediaCard to a cassette to be usedas a WIPE or MIX effect.
When Photo Title is set to ON, the selectedimage and Title will appear before eachrecording is made.WIPE : Successive scenes are separated

1 Set POWER to CAMERA. The POWER lamp lights red. Be sure POWER is fully turned to
CAMERA position.
2 Set TAPE/M-CARD to TAPE (page 8).
3 Press MENU to display the CAMERAmenu screen. Then rotate and pressJOG KEY to select PHOTO TITLE .
4 Rotate and press JOG KEY to selectMODE and TITLE .1st : Select and set MODE.2nd : Select TITLE and SET. PLEASE WAIT is displayed on the
screen. The Multi image screen is displayed.
5 Rotate and press JOG KEY to selectand set an image.
PLEASE WAIT is displayed whileimage is processed.
After Photo Title is performed, DigitalFunction turns off.
