Hamilton and company - are coming to a screen near you.

This July 3rd, just before Independence Day, a filmed version of the original Broadway musical Hamilton is coming to the streaming service Disney Plus.

In February, Disney announced it was bringing the film, which features the original Broadway cast, to North American cinemas in October 2021.

However, in a surprise reveal on Tuesday, show creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and Disney Executive Chairman Bob Iger said the Hamilton film would now be available for streaming this July-- 15 months ahead of schedule.

California just announced its public universities will hold

online classes this fall.

But New York educators are holding out a glimmer of hope that students right return in the fall.

At a virtual town hall on higher education, hosted by Assemblymember Rebecca A. Seawright, representatives from the city and state’s largest public universities weighed in on what might happen in the fall

Public universities are crucial, said Seawright in her introduction on Tues., May 12th. “Making higher education affordable is the key to success of not only students but to the economy of the region.”

Chancellor Dr. Félix V. Matos Rodríguez noted that the City University of New York (CUNY) had announced summer classes will be held online. CUNY is following Governor Cuomo’s seven-point checklist when it comes to reopening in the fall. “Right now, New York City has four of the

Each of our campuses is a complex ecosystem with engagement with their surrounding communities.” Without elaborating, Johnson said each campus has a checklist of priorities that must be met before in-person classes resumes.

Johnson said SUNY realized early on there would be a disruption in education. “We have a SUNY Korea campus,” she said. After conversations with their Korean counterparts, SUNY sought guidance from public health officials on how to bring overseas students home safely from countries already experiencing COVID-19. Not long after, they

brought 415,000 New York State students online to continue their education.

Not all students transitioned smoothly. Roughly 15,000 students didn’t have computer access. A fundraising drive allowed SUNY to deliver 9,000 laptops to students with plans to deliver 5,000 more. “We are getting close to our 15,000 goal,” she said.

Regardless of what the fall brings, Matos Rodríguez said CUNY will move more courses online. Labs and other hands-on classes will probably be the first to return in person, as long as social distancing and safety criteria can be met. They are also hoping to open up computer labs and food pantries for students. “But everything will be guided by the safety of our faculty, staff and students,” he said.

Before the pandemic only 20 percent of CUNY’s classes were taught online. They converted 50,000 courses to a distance learning modality in a week and a half.

As she walked to work at the Community League of the

Heights (CLOTH) food pantry one morning this week, Yvonne Stennett was startled.

The West 159th Street site had recently begun to distribute emergency food boxes to residents in need four days a week- double its previous two-day schedule.

But even the seasoned forty-year veteran of the organization was taken aback by the long lines that circled the site.

“The line from the food pantry went down 159th Street all the way to Broadway, then came down Broadway and back up 158th Street,” said CLOTH's Executive Director.

The line ended up connecting with another crowd of people gathered to acquire food from a nearby public school, she said.

Provisions are also being prepared for residents who cannot physically make it to the 159th Street site. With the help of two private donors, CLOTH was able to purchase a van to deliver meal boxes to homebound and disabled seniors two days a week.

It takes 20 employees and several volunteers to keep the pantry going, and CLOTH would welcome additional help.

“The more volunteers we have, the better,” Stennett said.

The organization has launched an online GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for its essential programs.

Founded in 1952, CLOTH sponsors after-

school and youth development programs, runs a middle school and has developed several buildings of affordable housing. With the exception of the food pantry, all of its programs have switched to remote service delivery. Its buildings' maintenance staff has reinforced cleaning and sanitation efforts to minimize the spread of COVID-19.

In addition to stepping up its food assistance program, CLOTH has responded to the pandemic by rolling out a remote learning platform to hundreds of students enrolled at Community Health Academy of the Heights, a grade 6- through-12 public school it operates at West 158th Street and Amsterdam Avenue.

The school, opened in 2006, offers classes related to personal and public health, while older students pursue internships in health careers.

In addition, CLOTH operates an after-school program at P.S. 4 Duke Ellington School. “We’re doing distance learning with our after-school program as well, since those students are in dire need of support,” said Stennett.

“It blew my mind. It’s incredible, the need out here now,” remarked Stennett of the number of New Yorkers who must now seek food assistance due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The food pantry run by CLOTH is now serving upwards of 400 people per day.

“The numbers have been going up every week,” Stennett said. “We sometimes have people lining up a few hours before we open. It’s become so desperate for people.”

The emergency food boxes, filled with fresh produce, rice, pasta, cereal, frozen meats and other items, have been acquired from City Harvest, Food Bank and Driscoll Foods, Stennett said. Greater quantities of food have been acquired in recent days due to increased demand, she added.

As the coronavirus pandemic hit, organizations across New

York were forced to close suddenly and to devise new methods of operation.

Local community boards were no exception.

Typically reliant on in-person gatherings, boards have pivoted to virtual meetings in recent weeks.

“Nobody saw this type of shutdown coming, but we still have business to conduct,” explained Eleazar Bueno, Chair of Community Board 12..

Bueno began his term in the early days of the new year, taking over from former Chair Richard Lewis. Lewis, who passed away in March, ended his tenure as Chair in late 2019 after a contentious set of months centered on gender bias accusations and an investigation by the Manhattan Borough

Things I MissFirst and foremost, I miss seeing, kissing and

hugging my mom. My mom lives less than a mile away from me, in the same small apartment that I grew up in on Wadsworth Avenue, but because of the whole novel coronavirus thing I have not seen her in over 2 months. We Facetime every day but that is not same thing. This past Mother’s Day was the first in recent memory that I did not spend it in the living room of said apartment waiting for her to work her culinary magic in the kitchen. Mom insisted on not going out and instead making all of us a feast fit for kings. My mom throws down better than any restaurant in the world.

Speaking of restaurants, I miss El Lina on 207th Street. I have been going to that place for over 20 years, and it is my absolute favorite Dominican restaurant Uptown. Let’s hope they come back. I miss having The Birdhouse sandwich at Buddha Beer Bar. I would have that with 2, maybe 3, Narragansetts because they were only $6 bucks. I miss just chilling at a bar and watching sports with people. I don’t even have to know them. It was cool to just take it all in.

Speaking of bars, I miss going to Monkey Room for their awesome Happy Hour. At $3 beers, maybe the best Happy Hour Uptown. Plus. it is like a block away from my apartment. I miss having the shrimp and grits at Boulvard Bistro in their awesome new space on 116th. The good thing about that is that they are still open, and I can still hit them up for take-out. I miss going to the library. The Fort Washington Library on 179th Street is the library where I would find sanctuary in as a kid.

I miss going to panels, art events and restaurants openings. From the Schomburg Center in Harlem, to Word Up Books in the Heights, to Dyckman Park in Dyckman City, Uptown was always popping. I am seriously sad that the Harlem Eat Up Festival will not take place this year. For me, that was the highlight of an Uptown Spring. There is nothing quite like Harlem Eat Up. Just imagine all your favorite food and spirits in one place. Simply stated, foodie heaven in Harlem.

I miss the summer in advance. This is the first Uptown Summer in recent memory that is effectively cancelled. No Puerto Rican Day or Dominican Day Parades, the Uptown Arts Stroll has gone virtual and probably no Dyckman Basketball. Say it ain’t so.

Uptown Summers change lives. Well, at least they used to. I miss that old school Uptown energy. Quarantine has put a damper on that infectious vibrancy that makes Uptown so special in Spring and Summer. Let’s hope it’s not gone for good.

Overlooking Highbridge Park, the building is an unassuming

structure tucked into a quiet, leafy intersection on Edgecombe Avenue.

It once served as the 100-bed Mother Cabrini Memorial Hospital, one of the numerous facilities founded in the name of

Relief in Releasethe patron saint of immigrants and operated by the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart.

The site now serves as a minimum security correctional facility aimed at providing a second chance in the form of constructive re-entry programs to parolees and parole violators.

But advocates who gathered outside its doors recently said the state is essentially condemning residents housed there to needless health risks, and possibly death, in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

Faith leaders, criminal justice reformers and elected officials rallied outside of the Edgecombe Residential Treatment Facility (ERTF) in Washington Heights on Tues., May 12th to demand the release of incarcerated individuals amid the crisis.

Declaring that those in correctional facilities with congregate housing such as ERTF are at extreme risk of contracting the virus, they called on Governor Andrew Cuomo to grant clemency to prisoners who are elderly or medically vulnerable, within one year of their release, or held due to technical parole violations.

The Black Death ravaged Europe during the Middle

Ages.

The Catholic Church, which served as the political power in Florence, erected an altar to St. Sebastian. The martyred third century Roman soldier is the patron saint of archers, athletes and plague protection. Legend held that a plague could be averted with the erection of an altar in his name.

Renaissance paintings of St. Sebastian often show him shot with arrows. But it is important to know the arrows didn’t kill him, said uptown artist Christopher Priore. Though he was later felled by a separate attack, the persecuted Sebastian survived the onslaught of the arrows ordered by the Roman emperor Diocletian.

The saint and the arrows inspired Priore long before the current pandemic.

Priore is one of the artists showcased in this year’s "#StayHomeOpenStudios" series by the Northern Manhattan Artists Alliance (NoMAA). Each Thursday at 7:30 p.m., NoMAA takes a virtual tour of local artists’ studios. The online event offers viewers

an intimate look at the artist's work and the opportunity to ask questions.

The large works on display in Priore’s Washington Heights studio have roots in the Renaissance iconography of St. Sebastian. But Priore abstracts it, and imbues it with distilled notions of love and mortality.

Priore, who focused on skywriting as his chosen genre in the 1980's, takes translucent materials and saturates them with colors ranging from wine and blood reds to brighter, more festive tones. The pieces reflect light and colors throughout the room, similar to people’s auras, he said.

Arrows often shoot through the pieces, and sometimes actually support the large-scale structures which resemble outspread arms, angel wings or abstractions of hearts.

“It almost came about as a joke,” he said. “Hearts and arrows, peanut butter and jelly. The work is both serious and humorous at the same time. It’s life and death, those two things we have to come to terms with, and enjoy every moment.”

Harlem-based artist Wilhemina Grant kicked off NoMAA’s virtual series two weeks ago. Grant works primarily with found objects. She recombines discarded objects, transforming them with wit and grace into new artistic life forms. A squashed can

for the viewer. “That’s just how art works, and for me, it’s a very spiritual experience to create art, because I don’t set out and necessarily make a specific thing.”

Grant is a two-time survivor of breast cancer. She devotes times to cancer education and awareness, particularly in high-risk communities of color. She speaks at art events about her own journey and ultimate renewal, and asks people to participate in artistic activities. It's a disarming tactic intended to draw people

This Sunday was Mother's Day.

At the time of this writing, Coronavirus accounts for 274,651 deaths globally. And this week, my honeybees are buzzing. The unexpected intersections of Mother's Day, COVID-19 and honeybees bring together themes that move me to awe and prompt me to share five musings about women and mental health.

1. Mom's coping with COVID-19 will dramatically shape kids' coping. The world is at war with the novel coronavirus, and some lessons we have learned in the context of WWII, albeit a different kind of war, shed light on our current situation. In the 1940-41 Blitz of WWII, German bombers attacked London every day and night, bar one, for eleven weeks straight. A third of the city was destroyed. Anna Freud, the youngest of Sigmund Freud's six children, and founder of child psychoanalysis, examined the impact of this potentially traumatic experience on London's children. In her work, War and Children, published with Dorothy Burlingham, she found that the strongest

stress than men. Specifically, 53 percent of women as compared to 37 percent of men describe worry or stress related to coronavirus that has negatively impacted their mental health. This gendered experience gives me pause, particularly for the women who are moms given what we have learned from

Anna Freud and others.

3. One group of women is especially at risk. In the United States, women hold 76 percent of healthcare jobs, and make up more than 85 percent of nurses. They are responsible for the vast majority of patient interactions in primary care settings,

With National Nurses Day last Wednesday and Mother's Day this past Sunday, it's an opportune moment to pause and say thank you.

CUNY is using money from the Chancellor’s Fund, an emergency relief program, to distribute grants to the poorest students and ones closest to graduating. “We want to make sure they make it to the finish line.”

Students facing class disruptions due to COVID-19 may still be eligible to retain their financial aid, said former State Assemblymember Guillermo Linares.

Dr. Linares, President of the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC), said his organization is working with state colleges and universities to ensure that students still qualify for financial aid. “If you are a student who met all eligibilities, but studies were disrupted by Coronavirus, you will receive your award,” he said.

He also said that students can still apply for the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) for the 2019-2020 academic year until June.

Dr. Kerry Walk, President of Marymount Manhattan College, said that the college activated its emergency response team in

LEARNING from p4 January. They moved online practically overnight in mid-March. “We have found that the shift online has brought out the best in us in so many different ways.”

The small Manhattan liberal arts school has a large number of performing arts students. They originally thought classes would suffer in a virtual setting. But recently students presented dance performances from all over the world. “The results were absolutely thrilling,” Walk said. “Online education has really surprised us.”

Marymount is putting tentative plans in place for the fall. They are hoping for in-person classes with an expanded online presence. “It’s been very hard to put a stake in the ground when conditions on the ground are changing over and over.”

One of Coogan’s owners, Peter Walsh, said Grant takes culture and makes art from

it. “She takes it and brings it out for all of us and makes it universal,” he said. “I really appreciate that because that’s also another reflection of our wonderful neighborhood of Washington Heights. That’s what you do, you let us look into you. And by looking into you, you let us look into ourselves.”

Prior to the coronavirus shutdown, CB12 had been working toward broadcasting all of the meetings based at its headquarters on FaceBook and YouTube.

District Manager Ebenezer Smith noted the technological advances that are available today compared to the city’s last great crisis.

“I was working for the NYC DOT Legal Department during 9/11 and we were out of the office for several weeks — more than a month,” Smith said. “Upon our return, it took several weeks to have telephone service and internet.”

Bueno said the remote meetings have had 100 percent attendance from board members.

Among the items passed remotely by the board are resolutions to provide a Citibike installation outside of New York-Presbyterian hospital, support Department of Transportation road work in Inwood and back a proposed cancellation of rents due to coronavirus.

Smith said the virtual meeting process has provided the board with flexibility.

“Recently, we were able to have two different meetings at the same time on different platforms — Zoom and Webex,” he said. “It’s allowed us to do different things.”

The board has also been hosting virtual seminars aimed at small businesses.

Titled “What You Need to Know,” the events provide information regarding financial assistance, commercial leases and legal matters, Bueno said.

“It’s been very successful. Businesses really need this type of information right now,” he said.

Though the board’s offices at 530 West 166th Street remain closed, the board has continued to field inquiries via email.

The issues raised by community members are of a different nature since the pandemic started, said Smith, who has worked at CB12 for nearly 13 years. “We have people looking for access to food or trying to navigate through a funeral process for a loved one because funeral homes are overrun.”

To meet the needs of community members who are suffering hardships due to the pandemic, CB12 has partnered with the Manhattan Borough President’s office to distribute thousands of food packages at Dyckman Houses.

The board also helped promote the opening of a new COVID-19 testing site located at Dyckman-Clinica de las Americas at 175 Nagle Avenue.

“We’ve become a community board that was focused on meetings and resolutions to one that is focused on helping people access food and having their basic needs met,” Bueno said. "We all need to pull together at a time like this."

Most students at the CLOTH-connected schools are Latino, with parents who do not speak or read English fluently, Stennett said. In such instances, home schooling can present unique challenges.

“We’re having to be the translator for the work the parents are receiving. These parents have now needed to become teachers,” she said.

Many of the same parents are now out of work due COVID-19. “The pressure of being home is mounting, both economically and psychologically,” said Stennett. “It’s a very difficult situation.”

Surveys were sent to parents so CLOTH could gauge what assistance they might need, while video sessions are being provided by CLOTH’s guidance counselor and social workers.

Aside from academic support, CLOTH is attempting to meet the socialization needs of students.

“We’ve also been creating things like virtual birthday parties and virtual museum tours, giving them different modes of being able to interact with each other,” Stennett said.

She remarked that remote learning is no substitute for in-person instruction from teachers that students are being deprived of

during the pandemic shutdown.“Students who were highly motivated and

took initiative before COVID-19, they [continue to excel],” she said. “But we have students who were struggling before and are maybe in a household where the parents aren’t in a position to help them right now. And then there are students with learning disabilities.”

“If you had academic struggles before, distance learning could put you even further behind. That will be across the city, not just here,” she said.

Stennett, who started at CLOTH as a youth counselor four decades ago, said she was “beyond nervous” about the effect of citywide budget cuts to the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) and Department of Youth and Community Development initiatives, which have jeopardized CLOTH’s programming.

“We lost funding for our summer youth employment workers, we have lost funding for our after-school program, so now we have to fundraise to be able to continue those,” Stennett said.

Another casualty is CLOTH’s summer camp, which provides activities, field trips and academic enrichment to underserved youth.

“As of right now, our summer camp is pretty much gone,” she stated.

Stennett explained that 160 students at Community Health Academy of the Heights had already been signed up for a summer job through SYEP. “It was hard to tell them it wasn’t happening,” remarked Stennett. “The money they earn helps them, sometimes helps their

families, and helps pay for college.” “I don’t know what our young people are

going to be doing this summer,” she said. “Kids will be out of school. What will they be doing? What will occupy their time?”

Despite the hardships created by COVID-19, Stennett said the pandemic has brought out the best in New Yorkers, remarking how moved she is seeing community members volunteer their time and resources to assist those in need.

“It kind of melts your heart a little bit, because you see the essence of people is really good. They care about their fellow human beings,” she said. “Even in the midst of being fearful for their own safety, they’re still coming out to help.”

“It’s wonderful to see,” she added. “It engenders that hope that not only will we make it through this crisis, but we’ll make it through better than before.”

The power of connection is helping women manage their elevated levels of stress in COVID-19 in the same way that the interdependence of the bees ensures an abundance of honey to be shared.

5. Ultimately, it's about the next generation. Mother's Day is about celebrating women who have come to have children and who have dedicated hard work to raising the next generation. COVID-19 is bringing into high relief questions about the future for this next generation and beyond. What kind of government do we want? How do we build back better our public health system? What are the takeaways for the environment now that the skies

over Mumbai, Los Angeles and Beijing are clearer than they have been in decades? And that's when I turn to my bees, again. Tens of thousands of them foraging for nectar and pollen, tending the colony, and caring for the queen. They will fill the combs of the hive with honey that they will never consume. The honey is for those who will need it in early spring when other food sources have yet to bloom. The producers of this summer's honey will be long gone by next spring. It's all about paying it forward for the next generation.

The system supervises 43,000 incarcerated individuals and employs approximately 29,000 people.

To date, 15 people in New York’s prison system have died from COVID-19.

“It’s unacceptable to have deaths behind bars,” said Katie Schaffer, Director of Organizing and Advocacy of the Center for Community Alternatives.

The legal group focuses on community-based alternatives to incarceration.

She noted that only one percent of those incarcerated in New York State — and no inmates at Edgecombe — have been tested for COVID 19.

“Governor Cuomo must take action to prevent more deaths,” argued Schaffer.

Advocates note that New York State has the sixth highest number in the U.S. of total deaths behind bars from COVID-19.

“All of us have a right to live, and we must take care of people who are incarcerated as soon as possible,” said Rev. Kevin Vanderhook of Riverside Church, located in nearby Morningside Heights. “We believe that this is a moral imperative.”

The ERTF correctional site is a minimum-security facility where the average stay is 45 days for female and male residents 18 years of age and older. It is used for general confinement and as a residential treatment site, offering substance abuse treatment, work-release and education programs.

Its primary objective is to afford a diversion and a re-entry program for parolees and parole violators.

Its residential quarters are also the kind of congregate housing that has proven fertile

In a statement posted online, DOCCS said it was strictly adhering to the state's public health protocols and ramping up distribution of personal protective equipment such as face coverings and hand sanitizers at all sites.

State Assemblymember Carmen De La Rosa said the state needs to do more to protect the incarcerated during the pandemic.

"I represent this community," she said. "Racial

injustice ravaged this community that I grew up in. We say that we stand against the death penalty, but we’re sentencing people to death right now."

“We cannot claim we are the most progressive state in the nation if we do not do right by our most vulnerable.”
