Fear Sin, Not DeathThe month of August is a hectic month for us, as half of the

month we are busy with the preparation and the celebration of

the feast of Good Death of Mother Mary or 'Boa Morte' and

subsequently the feast of Assumption of Mother Mary into

Heaven. We celebrate the death of Mother Mary as she did not

sin and so was assumed into heaven. As we are aware, we

celebrate the day of the Death of saints as their Feast, because

they tried their best to live a life without sin, and even if they did, they repented and

turned back to the way showed by Jesus. They turned away from sins and hence they

conquered death. But the fact remains that many among us fear death, but we do not

have any fear or at times even the sense of sin. stPope Francis, in his address which he gave on 1 July says, “Catholics have no reason to

fear death, because Christ the Lord has power over death; instead, they should fear sin,

which hardens and kills the soul.” He further says, “Jesus is the Lord, and before Him

physical death is like sleep, there is no reason to despair. The death to be afraid of is that

of the heart hardened by evil. Of that yes, we must be afraid! It is the death of the heart.”

Pope Francis also revisits the famous phrase used by Pope Pius XII: “The greatest sin

today is that men have lost the sense of sin.” We do not even realize that we have sinned

after we have, and if anyone tries to correct, we try to justify ourselves by citing

examples of others and blaming others and glorifying ourselves. If we evade paying

tax we say, everyone does it. If suppose anyone gets into immorality or drugs, we

justify it by saying it is in vogue.

The best way to know what is sin is not to compare ourselves with others but to live in

accordance with the commandments, beatitudes and virtues. Sin is not only doing bad

but also evading good deeds. Even if we have sinned we have a hope, we can always

reconcile with God as well as others.

Romans 6:5 says, “For if we have become united with him in a death like His, we will

certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like His.” It is a graceful time for us

during this preparatory time of feast to reflect on our lives and teachings of the Church

and come back to the Lord and live a life without fear of death, but fear of sin. So that we

may have a Good Death and enjoy blissful eternal life.

2 Cor 7:10 says, 'Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no

regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.' We can take the example of Peter who denied

Jesus but then repented and asked for pardon and came back to Jesus and he became a

saint. While Judas betrayed Jesus and he too repented but in a worldly way by going

away from Jesus and hung himself, which is not right in the eyes of God.

GOA, CANDOLIM , ME AND YOU

The recent fish controversy where chemical added fish was sold in the land of abundant fish, the New draft CRZ notification which will wipe out the NDZ area along Candolim and many other coastal areas, the issue of coal transportation, the new super highways and displacing of people from the homes due to the highways, and also extension of railway lines in some parts of Goa, have kept me thinking Goa! What next?First and foremost, we need to be still and listen. There is so much of noise in the Media, some of us are concerned, other are deceptors and few of us will be indifferent. What is God saying in such a situation when the existence of Goa is itself in grave danger? I would like to share with the reader that our battle is not against a visible enemy but against the evil forces of the unseen deceptor and therefore our response needs to differ a bit. Yes agitate, protest and moving the courts for justice we must but along with this something else too.Let us reflect on Mathew 11:28-30 where Jesus says “Come to Me all you who are heavy laden, I will give you rest (NKJV)”. This means we need to pray and pray now more than anytime else in the history of Goa.A time has come for us now to make a special programme in every parish of Goa to have a timetable wherein we come to God with all these burdens of our beautiful land and tell him in prayer to intervene. God intervenes when we invite him in our problems, humbly through our prayers. Let us remind ourselves that Jesus said , “where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there and when two or more agree upon something (Good and justified) and you ask, my father in heaven will do it for you” ( MT 18:19.)Keeping these two facts in mind I feel and suggest that all Parishes starting with Candolim which will be affected need to pray before the Blessed Sacrament just for 15 minutes (atleast) each somudai wise everyday of the week. We could meet and silently sit in the presence of Jesus with all the dangers we are facing and ask Him to intervene. Now just imagine the entire Goan parishes sitting everyday. Every Small Christian Community praying before Jesus, what an impact it will have in our efforts to save Goa.By the time I have reached this paragraph, many may be saying “who has got the time for such prayers”? others will say “who will prepare the liturgy for the adoration”. (Remember, I suggest it is just silently praying before the Blessed Sacrament) still others will say “The writer of this article is a guy who has no work (bekar) in Konkani and so he writes such articles - whatever you say read this article from the beginning a second time. There is one way to save us and it is Prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. Its now or never. The choice is ours.Call me a fool, or a (bekar) jobless guy but if we don't start now we shall never reach anywhere close to save our land, our jobs and our identity.

VIRUS OF INSENSITIVENESS

When you get really cold and indifferent at heart, you become insensitive to the pain of others which mean the person becomes uncaring, unsympathetic who doesn't respect the feelings and emotions of others.This is a threatening virus gone viral in our society. It has attacked our families, neighbourhood, society, our government and spreading fast to

the whole humanity.A country prospers when the people in authority, call it our elected leaders, ministers, municipalities, Panchayats or government are sensitive to the needs of his people. But unfortunately this is not so today. Their own opinions, needs and egos are important to them that they don't see beyond that. They are become so selfish and self- centred they don't see beyond their own desires and expectations and when others express their point of view they tend to take offence.The basic amenities needed are not taken care of but they plan for superfluous development. We don't have proper domestic electricity and water supply but they have and are already in process of bringing in huge projects instead of solving the problems of the locals! The tariffs go on increasing but the supply and quality goes on decreasing. Do they care? They have their own supply on the cost of the poor people.Though we pay through our nose for our daily bread, it's not safe for consumption! They encourage this for their own gain - not a bit of care for the health of the people.The traffic cops go on collecting fines for not wearing helmets, no licences etc which is for our safety they say but what about the state of our roads? They are like graves dug to bury you alive specially the two wheeler riders! The roads repaired or widened do not even last a year though crores are spent to repair them- whom to blame? Still they plan for huge highways and high bridges. For whom? Just take care of the roads which are there and blessings from all will be showered on you which are of much worth than all the materialistic wealth you hoard. Have a heart for your people- not builders land sharks. They care for the biodiversity in words but allow others or ravage it themselves mercilessly in the dark. And they rationalise their crime! How cruel can they get!Then there are insensitive puppets who are weak-minded and are usually controlled from behind. They tend to dance according to the tunes of their puppeteers as they have been conditioned to believe them blindly. All their sensitivity and loyalty leans towards their manipulators and they are likely to pick up the traits of those persons who could be their most respected mentors. They behave the way they have been told to, without using their own logic. And we either support them in our own interest or are too scarred of their threats or are satisfied with the crumbs dusted off in our laps now and then. Are these really blind to see what is happening? Can't they see beyond today? Don't wait before it's too late to restore or undo the harm already done! Come out of your comfort zone and together let's work for the good of all! My dear all in authority please immunise yourself against this virus of insensitivity and care for those you are responsible for, in every way and God's blessings will rain on you. Pray that the fulfilment of God's words through the prophet Ezekiel 36: 26 come true " I will give you new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove your heart of

The life of a Consecrated Priest!

Priests genuinely, graciously and generously serve their flock. Being human they too falter. They go through various emotions - sadness, happiness, trauma, loss of a loved one etc. They are very much tested in life. They go through difficult trials and tribulations all alone - but they have a beautiful faithful friend in Jesus.

Just like us, they too come across all types of people - good, kind, genuine, understanding also rude and not so understanding. Sometimes we are indifferent to their needs. Even with physical discomfort they go on with their priestly duties. Due to their hectic schedule, fatigue, the mental stress etc and at times do not get sufficient rest for their well being and their stress level increases. They long for a few hours of relaxation. If their bodies do not get the required rest things can get worse for them. We at times forget about their needs - their much deserved rest.

We should never take them for granted. We cannot drain them completely. They need to be comforted and to be understood. They need to be protected - not attacked verbally. We do not give our sons to God but we do expect a lot from the Priests - irrespective of their age, condition or the situation they are in. We must have compassion for them. Do we connect with them? Do we touch our Priests heart or do we break them. In their painful moments are we with them? Or is it just us and our work.

Prayer: Dear Lord, please bless all our Priests and the ones that are to come till the end of time. Please grant eternal rest to the Priests who are no more. Amen.

A Father, a friend and a mentor, that we looked up to since our childhood. Our family, has lost a wonderful father, grandfather and a great-grandfather, he taught us to be strong, to stay connected no matter how far or near we were from him,

even if he had to get to the place on a bicycle to visit someone.He shared his life experiences, his hardships faced at home and beyond, and the

way he lived his life to the fullest is exemplary to all. He always showed genuine concern and loving care to anyone he met either from family or strangers from his

evening walks at the Tinto.The memories he's been part of has become heartbeats which reminds us of him

every time.At his burial, we surely have paid our last respects to him but we could not say our

final goodbyes still.At this anniversary of his death, we pray to the almighty Lord to give him eternal

peace and we promise to celebrate his life more than to mourn on his death.
