PROGRAMA AmazonFACE Free Air CO2 Enrichment
Programa Coleções Científicas Biológicas do INPA

Major projects and research programsMAUA PROJECT Ecology, Monitoring and Sustainable Use of Wetlands of the Amazon Project
Since 1985 dedicated to studying wetlands, especially in Amazonia, monitoring ecological indicators of the diffe-rent typologies, in order to inform public policies that will ensure that their use is appropriate to its potential, fragi-lities and environmental services.
PPBIO Biodiversity Research Program
Ceated in 2004 with the objective of intensifying studies on biodiversity in Brazil, decentralizing the scientific produc-tion of the academically developed centers, integrating re-search activities and disseminating the results for different purposes, such as environmental management and educa-tion. It is structured in three main components: Inventories, Collections and Thematic and has several regional centers and partner projects across the country.
LBA PROGRAM The Large Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Research Program in the Amazon
The LBA Program has been in operation since 1998, and studies the functioning of the Amazon ecosystem in all its aspects and seeks to understand how changes in land use and climate can affect the biological, chemical and physical processes, as well as sustainable development in the region. The Amazon is undergoing rapid and intense transformation, related to its development and occupa-tion process, and the LBA also investigates the interaction of the forest with the regional and global climate.
AmazonFACE Free Air CO2 Enrichment Program
The Amazon-FACE program aims to investigate how the potential increase in atmospheric concentrations of CO2 - which is the most immediate cause of climate change - can affect tropical forests. It aims to stimulate forest growth and resilience to drought through carbon “ferti-lization,” an experiment that has never been tested be-fore and is the most direct and robust scientific approach to reducing the uncertainties associated with forest res-ponse to climate change.
INPA’s Biological Scientific Collections Program
The Collections Program has nine scientific collections in the areas of Zoology, Botany and Microbiology that are important reference points for Amazonian biodiversity. The program began with the creation of the Herbarium in 1954 and aims to maintain and develop the collections of INPA’s biological scientific collections, with representatives of Amazonian biodiversity in ex situ conditions, maintai-ning databases for research purposes. These collections include holotypes, paratypes and rare specimens.
ATTO PROJECT Observatory of the Tall Tower of the Amazon
Installed on an experimental site within the Sustainable Development Reserve - RDS Uatumã, it has the highest tower in the world, with 325 m, and two more towers of 80 m each. From these, studies on micrometeorology and atmospheric chemistry are conducted, and new oppor-tunities were open for observations of animal migration phenomena, gas flows, phenology, among others. The tower is equipped with devices for measuring various gre-enhouse gases, reactive trace gases and aerosols. The data collected should improve understanding of how the Ama-zon interacts with the global climate, the chemistry of the atmosphere, and the cycling of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane.
BDFFP Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project
The study areas of the PDBFF were installed in 1979, nor-th of Manaus and make up the Area of Relevant Ecologi-cal Interest ARIE PDBFF, managed by ICMBio in conjunc-tion with INPA. With more than 37 years of continuous monitoring of fauna, flora and physical environment res-ponses to forest fragmentation, their studies contribute to understanding the effect of forest fragmentation on biodiversity, and the synergistic effects of climate change and forest fragmentation and regeneration on the func-tioning of the forest. The PDBFF also has a relevant role in training professionals in the Amazon.
Expansion of the Technological and Multi-user Capacity of the MCTI-INPA
It aims to restructure INPA’s Multi-User Thematic Labo-ratories and Biological Collections to strengthen the de-velopment of basic and applied research integrated in interdisciplinary areas such as biodiversity, conservation, development of phytopharmaceuticals, edible fruits or nutraceutical products (fruit growing), nutrition / bree-ding effect on fish (fish farming), study of biota interac-tions, among others.
The National Institutes of Science and Technology (INCTs) Program in Amazonia
The Program is coordinated by MCTIC, and INPA has 7 approved INCTs, 4 already installed and 3 pending finan-cing. They seek to articulate research groups in frontier areas of science and in strategic areas for the sustainable development of the country. Installed: INCT Woods of the Amazon, coordinated by Dr. Niro Higuchi; Environmen-tal Services of the Amazon (Servamb), coordinated by Dr. Philip Fearnside; Center for Integrated Studies on Ama-zonian Biodiversity (Cenbam), coordinated by Dr. William Magnusson; and Adaptations of the Aquatic Biota of the Amazon (Adapta), coordinated by Dr. Adalberto Val.
