Most countries in the world now welcome tourists because of the money they bring in. Manycountries make great efforts to encourage tourism, and many also depend on what they earn from itto keep their economies going.

People who like adventure will even try to visit countries where travel is difficult and costs arehigh. Companies regularly arrange trips through the Sahara desert, or to the Himalayan Mountainsfor whoever enjoys such trips, but the numbers of visitors are small. Most tourists try to choosewhichever places have comfortable, cheap hotels, quite good food, reasonable safety, sunnyweather and plenty of amusements or unusual things to see. Their choice of a place for a holidayalso depends very much on when they can get away; it is not very pleasant to go to a place when itis having its worst weather.

One of the big problems for a nation wishing to attract a lot of tourists is the cost of buildinghotels for them. Building big hotels swallows up a lot of money, and many of the countries thatneed tourists are poor. What they spend on building has to be borrowed from foreign banks; andsometimes the money they can afford to borrow produces only chains of ugly hotels wherever there are beauty spots that are supposed to attract the tourists.

There is also the question of training staff; teaching them foreign languages, how to cook thekind of food that foreign tourists expect, and so on. In many countries, special colleges and courseshave been set up for this.

Crime can also be a problem. Seeing tourists who seem to be much richer than themselves, thelocal inhabitants are often tempted to steal from them. Sometimes tourists resist and get killed, andthen other tourists refuse to come to the country.

But an even greater problem in many countries is the effect that the sight of foreigners has onthe local population. A man who lives in a very small house, owns almost nothing, works veryhard for his living and has very strong rules about modesty in dress and not drinking alcohol sees

foreign tourists rejoicing in what to him is great luxury, owning cars, wearing very few clothes anddrinking a lot. These tourists may be ordinary workers back at home, but to the poor inhabitantthey seem to be very rich. And of course, he either feels envy for them or thinks them shameless.

Tourists, too, often feel shocked by the different customs and habits that they see around them. They refuse the local food, and insist on having only what they eat back home.

They say that travel broadens the mind; but it is doubtful whether this is so; often, it narrows it.

Who wants to be a millionaire?has been one of the most popular television quiz shows, not

only in Britain, but also around the world. In the show, the host asks a question and gives thecontestant four possible answers. If the contestant gets the right answer, they win the money say100 and then go on to the next question for, say 250. The money increases for each questionuntil, if the contestant has answered all the other questions correctly, the prize for the final questionis one million pounds.

In this extract from a show some years ago, the host is television personality Chris Tarrant.Answering the questions is an ex-army officer, Charles Ingram.

TARRANT: What kind of garment is an Anthony Eden? An overcoat, hat, shoe, tie?INGRAM: I think it is a hat.(a cough from the audience)INGRAM: Again Im not sure. I think it is ...(coughing from the audience)INGRAM: I am sure it is a hat. Am I sure?(coughing from the audience)INGRAM: Yes, hat, its a hat. That answer the name for a peculiar British hat that nobody wears anymore - earned Charles

Ingram 250,000. Two questions later, he had won a million pounds, and the audience in the studiowent crazy. But something wasnt quite right. As he progressed through the various stages, CharlesIngram didnt really seem very sure of himself; he obviously didnt know the answer at first, so hemust have been very good at guessing. Unless he wasnt guessing. To many in the audience thatnight, it seemed as if he kept changing his mind and frequently repeated an answer as if waiting for a signal.

He was.Charles Ingrams wife Diana was in the audience, and so too was a man with the extraordinary

name Tecwen Whittock. At first, people might have been sympathetic about Tecwen. He had a badcough. But a man sitting next to him in the audience noticed that there was something strangeabout the cough. It was too loud, and it wasnt very regular. It only happened occasionally, almostas if he was coughing on purpose.

He was.The three of them, Charles Ingram, Diana Ingram and Tecwen Whittock, had planned the

whole thing. Whittock coughed to tell Charles when he had the correct answer. They began tonotice it in the television control room, but at first they didnt believe it. In the end, though, it was just too obvious, and when tapes from the programme were played to a court in London a year later, there was no doubt. Charles and Diana Ingram were guilty of cheating on a game show. Theywere given prison sentences of 18 months and fined 15,000 each. Tecwen Whittock was

sentenced to 12 months in prison and fined 10,000. None of them actually went to prison, however, because the sentences were suspended that means that they would not go to prisonunless they committed another crime. [...]

    TAPESCRIPT:(SOURCE:Jan Bell, Roger Gower,Upper-Intermediate Matters, Students Book,Longman, 1999,ISBN 0-582-04664-5, Unit 18, Recording 1, p 158; Audioscript source: Jan Bell, Roger Gower,Upper-Intermediate Matters, Students Book,Longman, 1999, Unit 18, Recording 1)

Nearly all societies hold rites of passage ceremonies, which observe a persons entry into anew stage of life. The most common rites of passage are occasions such as birth, marriage anddeath. Most rites help people to understand and accept their new roles in society and help others tolearn to treat them in new ways. And now were going to hear about five different ceremonies.

Muslims hold a ceremony a week after a baby is born, which is known as an Aqiqa. Theceremony is intended to protect the baby from dangers in its life, and it has several parts. Thechilds head is first shaved so that its completely clean, and then the weight of the cut hair is given

    43

    11/57

in gold or silver to the poor. This is the babys first act of charity towards others. After this, the baby is named, and the ceremony is followed by a feast. Goats and sheep are cooked andsweetened, as its believed that sweet food will make the child good-natured. Two thirds of themeat is given to the poor.

Another religious ceremony which babies often go through is called baptism. This practiceinvolves a symbolic washing with water to indicate the washing away of sins and the start of a

renewed life. Most churches consider baptism to be the main ceremony which signifies a personsentry into the Christian community. Children are often given their first name at this ceremony, andthere is usually some kind of party afterwards.

A Jewishbar mitzvahcelebrates the reaching of spiritual adulthood, which is, for a Jewish boy,at the age of thirteen. A crucial aspect of the bar mitzvah experience is when the father lets his songo, accepting that he is now his own person, responsible for his own actions. The father is thankingGod for his sons manhood when he says: Blessed is he who has released me from responsibilityfor this child. From the following day the boy is expected to observe all the relevantcommandments and to be responsible for his own behaviour.

Nearly all religions include the belief that human beings survive death in some form. For many people, such as the Balinese, a funeral symbolizes the passage from one life to another, rather thanan end of a persons existence. In Bali, a cremation is therefore a time of joy and celebration. Onthe morning of the cremation, friends and relatives gather to pay their last respects and to eat anddrink with the family. There is then a procession to the cremation ground, some men carrying thecorpse in a tower built of bamboo and paper, and other men carrying a special container called asarcophagus, which may be in the shape of a cow or a bull. At the cremation ground the body istransferred to the sarcophagus and when it has been reduced to ashes and the soul released there isa happy noisy procession to the sea, where the ashes are scattered. This last ceremony representscleansing and purification.

Not all rites of passage are religious, and other kinds of rites in modern times would includethe key of the door which young people get at the age of eighteen or twenty-one, the right tovote, or a driving licence. People often pass through rites as a group. In graduation ceremonies inthe United States, for example, students first stand together in a special area, away from their friends and relatives. Then they walk across a stage to symbolize the transition, and change thetassels from one side of the cap to the other to indicate entry into society as graduates. Thegraduation gowns symbolize their temporary separation from society.

For two decades after World War II, mass production reigned supreme. Mass-productiontechniques pushed companies into standardized products, long product life cycles, and rigidmanufacturing, emphasizing efficiency and low cost over flexibility. Special orders cost more. Buttoday's consumers are very choosy. They want quality, value and products specially tailored totheir needs, but always at the lowest possible price. For now mass customization has come to thefore. Mass customization uses information technology to produce and deliver products andservices designed to fit the specifications of individual customers. Companies can customize products in quantities as small as one with the same speed and low cost as mass-productionmethods. Mass-customization systems use information taken from the customer to control the flowof goods.

    1. Exciting. So exciting. I mean, Ive spent most of my creative life working in what I guessmost people see as a very traditional way. I tend to use oils, but occasionally I work withwatercolours and Ive done one or two pieces of collage and sculpture that I think are quitesuccessful. But then along came computers and theyve opened up completely new areas for people to explore, completely new avenues and methods of expression. Its fantastic.

    2. Quite frankly in the fifteen years Ive been doing this, theyve revolutionized my workinglife. Time was Id sent in a rough draft, which usually had a lot of crossings out and bits added andarrows all over it. And it would come back with comments for revisions and whatnot. And in order to produce a final manuscript Id have to start all over again from the very beginning. Whereasnow, of course, I slap in a disk and start from where Ive left off. Magic!

    3. But, actually, I think what I appreciate most is the contact. Because, in my job, I can be sentoff at a moments notice to a disaster zone or a famine area. Its difficult, even impossiblesometimes, to let mu family know where I am, or how I am, or when Im coming home. So yes, theres vital information on symptoms and treatment that I can access at any time and thats useful, but it cant beat being able to e-mail my kids on their birthday.

    4. Well, yes, I can see the benefits. But unfortunately I can see the downside too. Working with problem kids, as I do, in their homes and with their families, I would much rather that these kidsspent time interacting with other people, getting some of their problems out in the open rather thanshutting themselves away in front of an endless succession of screen games. Sometimes I feel likeunplugging the damn machines and throwing them out the window.

    5. Im on the Internet every day. And not just playing, shopping, entertainment, and so on. Itdoesnt govern my life. Its useful stuff Im doing. And as long as youre fairly selective aboutwhat you believe, its incredible what you can find out. The web is probably the source that I usethe most these days for keeping me up-to-date on my subject. And I encourage my classes to use itas much as possible too.

    PATAGONIA

Over the past three decades, Patagonia, which now employs 1,000 people worldwide, hasdeveloped into a business where quality of life and a commitment to environmental sustainabilityare central to its mission. Patagonia regularly donates 1% of its profits, which last year reached 195m, to supporting small, local environmental groups. The activities of these groups range fromcampaigning for cleaner rivers to fighting road-building plans.

The company also goes to great lengths to reduce environmental ill-effects from its ownactivities, such as using organic cotton in its factories and recycling packaging. There are few staff vacancies, but when they occur there are always numerous applicants, in Europe as well as in theUS. So, where applicants share the same skills, the job is given to the person who best fits thecompanys values.

Isabella Susini, who works in the four-person marketing team at the Paris headquarters, is

typical in her enthusiasm for the companys flexible way of working. She is also enthusiastic aboutthe opportunity she had to spend two months in voluntary work for an environmental group, while

The Managing Director of Patagonia Europe, Alain Ronc, says, What is special is that we havea company where we regard our employees as the most valuable asset. Work, with its deadlines, imposes huge amounts of stress on staff. We believe that people are able to perform better withoutstress which is why we do our best to reduce tension in our workplace.

Mr Ronc says, The lack of hierarchy, shared interests and flexibility helps to create an open business where ideas from those who actually buy our products in our stores become a reality. Theeasy two-way flow of information means employees understand and agree with the companysgoals. In our company, there does not seem to be any office policies!

    WRITTEN EXAM (BUSINESS) 5: KEY

    I. Listening Comprehension / Ascultare (6 X 1 = 6 puncte)

    TAPESCRIPT(SOURCE: G. Tullis & S. Power, New Insights into Business, Workbook, PearsonEducation Ltd. 2004, p. 19)

Hello, my name is David Smith and I am Director for People at ASDA, the supermarketchain, which, as some of you are probably aware, is owned by Wal-Mart, the US discountcompany. Thank you for inviting me to speak to you today about why I think Asda is sosuccessful

To begin with I would like to stress that the success enjoyed by Asda, and the fact that it isgenerally seen to be a very good employer, has not been achieved easily. Asda is constantlyevolving its methods to keep staff happy. The success that we have has not occurred overnight. We have worked on this for ten years and will continue to do so in the future!

In my opinion the key to Asdas success is communication all the mechanics have been putin place to achieve this within the company. And it is not just about getting the right messagesdown from the top of the organisation it is also about ensuring feedback is properly listened toand communicated back to the top.

This is particularly important in retailing, of course, where the majority of staff are either onthe shop floor dealing with customers, or behind the scenes in areas such as the supply chain, where they can feel cut off from central operations. But the message comes from the top in allways and in my view this is because of Asdas lack of a traditional hierarchical structure.

To give you an idea about how the company operates, at the Leeds headquarters all offices areopen plan and everyone eats in the same canteen. Near the executive desks there is a meetingroom but the table does not have chairs around it on the basis that if people have to stand up, themeetings will be far shorter!

To receive feedback from staff, Asda has taken a number of measures. For example, eachstore has a listening group. Senior managers regularly go to stores and see the groups of betweensix and twelve staff. They are told they are not allowed to talk they have to listen! Asda thenmeasures the effectiveness of the groups with a listening survey.

So, what are the perks of working for Asda? Well, all staff get 10% off when they shop there. But there are a number of other benefits, ranging from a law club, which offers legal protectionfor 10p a week, to special treatment for older staff, such as grandparents leave.

Stores also have a certain level of independence For instance, each one gets 5,000 a year to spend in whichever way staff choose. If they want to put newspapers in the staff room every

day they can do it. Or they might want to buy a television that people can watch on their breaks. Itis totally up to them. You see, the whole Asda culture is fed down from senior management to its individual

stores. As you may have heard, all shop staff start each shift with a huddle standing together to be told about key elements of group performance and that of the individual store.

So, would anyone like to ask any questions before I move on?
