Joe Keville, ordained in 1996, a hospital chaplain living at St. Mary Parish, Cambridge. I know you do not have the opportunity to thank him personally, but please remember him in your prayers. If his last name sounds familiar it’s because his mother, Barbara, was Religious Ed. Director here for a few years with Fr. Ferreira.

Poderá acontecer na Igreja depois da missa ou em outro lugar onde o doente fisicamente se encontra. Encora-jamos as pessoas responsáveis pelos doentes a não es-perar até ao último momento para contactar o Sacerdote. O ultimo sacramento deve ser o Viaticum, ou Comunhão pelos moribundos.

Anointing of the Sick The church encourages & invites all who are ill, who are to undergo surgery, or who are confined to their home due to illness to be prayed over & anointed with sacred oil. This can take place after Mass, at home or at the hospital. Please do not wait for the last moment for yourself or a loved one to be anointed. The last sacrament is Viaticum or commun-ion for the dying. Please speak to a priest for anointing.

Natal 2020

~ Christus Natus Est ~

“Glória a Deus nas Alturas e Paz na terra”

Queridos Irmãos e Irmãs em Cristo, Cristo nasceu! Há mais de dois mil anos na aldeia de Beit Sahour, perto de Belém, um anjo apareceu a um grupo

de homens e mulheres que estavam vigiando as ovelhas. Eram ignorados pela sociedade por criar animais embora que fos-

sem usados nos sacrifícios do Templo. Imagine a alegria de ouvir as notícias que Aquele que lhes salvaria, EMANUEL, nas-

ceu na cidade de David. O Cristo estava perto não só de onde estavam fisicamente mas também dos seus corações. O sinal

do que era verdade foi que achariam uma criança envolta de panos numa manjedoura, onde comem os animais. Os pastores,

esperando a libertação da opressão, correram para a manjedoura. Estes foram os primeiros a receber a mensagem do nasci-

mento do Salvador, antes de qualquer rei ou Mago chegasse para ver o Salvador, o Rei recentemente nascido. Estes homens,

mulheres e crianças dos campos tiveram a primeira experiência do Cristo, o Cordeiro de Deus que tira os pecados do mun-

do.

Jesus nasceu em história para nos ensinar como melhor ser filhos e filhas de Deus, irmãos e irmãs numa família de

Deus. Ele vem nos mostrar a misericórdia do Pai, tornando se mesmo a porta da Misericórdia pela qual entramos na salva-

ção. O sinal que nós recebemos é o mesmo que os pastores receberam, uma criança deitada numa manjedoura, o Deus de

Amor Misericordioso. “Tanto amou Deus o mundo, que lhe entregou seu Filho Unigénito, a fim de que tudo o que nele crê

não se perca, mas tenha a vida eterna.” (João 3: 16-17)

Nesta altura do ano, todos nós recebemos pedidos de assistência financeira. Quanto possível é o nosso dever, a nos-

sa salvação de ajudar o mais que pudermos especialmente durante esta quadra natalícia. Na vossa generosidade peço-vos que

não se esqueçam dos sacerdotes reformados da Arquidiocese de Boston nas Missas de Natal. Em todas as Missas haverá

uma só colecta para este fim. É aqui na Igreja que nos juntamos para celebrar numa maneira especial o Amor de Deus para

conosco. As ofertas feitas nas Missas do dia de Natal são totalmente entregues à Arquidiocese para ajudar aos sacerdotes

reformados. Como temos feito estes últimos anos o dinheiro do beijar o Menino Jesus será enviada para uma caridade que

dê ajuda a crianças.

Neste tempo em que damos ofertas uns aos outros, num verdadeiro sentido de caridade Cristã, rezemos pelo nosso

próximo pedindo que a Alegria e a Paz daquele primeiro Natal encha os seus corações. Pedimos que a Paz e as Bênçãos do

nosso Deus de Amor estejam abundantemente convosco neste Natal e ao longo do Ano Novo.

Como sabem, o Pe. Luiz e eu estivemos em quarentena porque um de nós tivemos contato com alguém que estava

positivo com Covid. Infelizmente ficamos positivos também. Com isso fiquei doente com uma pneumonia viral e tive no

hospital por 11 dias. Dou graças a Deus que foi um caso leve, muitos outros não tiveram nem tenham a mesma sorte e te-

mos prova disso aqui na nossa família paroquial. Agradeço de coração todas as suas orações! Peço que lembram os ainda

afetados com esta doença horrível e os que cuidem deles que são verdadeiramente anjos.

By Dr. Scott Hahn Easter Sunday (Cycle B) The tomb was empty. In the early morning darkness of that first Easter, there was only confusion for Mary Magdalene and the other disciples. But as the daylight spread, they saw the dawning of a new crea-tion. At first they didn't understand the Scripture, to-day's Gospel tells us. We don't know which precise Scripture texts they were supposed to understand. Perhaps it was the sign of Jonah, who rose from the belly of the great fish after three days (see Jonah 1:17). Or maybe Hosea's prophecy of Israel's restora-tion from exile (see Hosea 6:2). Perhaps it was the psalmist who rejoiced that God had not abandoned him to the nether world (see Psalm 16:9-10). Whichever Scripture it was, as the disciples bent down into the tomb, they saw and they believed. What did they see? Burial shrouds in an empty tomb. The stone removed from the tomb. Seven times in nine verses we hear that word - "tomb." What did they believe? That God had done what Jesus said He would do - raised Him up on the third day (see Mark 9:31; 10:34). What they saw and believed, they bore witness to, as today's First Reading tells us. Peter's speech is a summary of the gospels - from Jesus' baptism in the Jordan to His hanging on a tree (see Deuteronomy 21:22-23), to His rising from the dead. We are children of the apostles, born into the new world of their witness. Our lives are now "hidden with Christ in God," as today's Epistle says. Like them, we gather in the morning on the first day of the week - to celebrate the Eucharist, the feast of the empty tomb. We rejoice that the stones have been rolled away from our tombs, too. Each of us can shout, as we do in today's Psalm: "I shall not die, but live." They saw and believed. And we await the day they promised would come - when we, too, "will ap-pear with Him in glory."

Terceiro Domingo do Advento As leituras do 3º Domingo do Advento gar-antem-nos que Deus tem um projecto de salvação e de vida plena para propor aos homens e para os fazer passar das “trevas” à “luz”. Na primeira leitura, um profeta pós-exílico apresenta-se aos habitantes de Jerusalém com uma “boa nova” de Deus. A missão deste “profeta”, ungido pelo Espíri-to, é anunciar um tempo novo, de vida plena e de felicidade sem fim, um tempo de salvação que Deus vai oferecer aos “pobres”. O Evangelho apresenta-nos João Baptista, a “voz” que prepara os homens para acolher Jesus, a “luz” do mundo. O objectivo de João não é centrar sobre si próprio o foco da atenção pública; ele está apenas interessado em levar os seus interloc-utores a acolher e a “conhecer” Jesus, “aquele” que o Pai enviou com uma proposta de vida definitiva e de liberdade plena para os homens. Na segunda leitura Paulo explica aos cristãos da comunidade de Tessalónica a atitude que é preciso assumir enquanto se espera o Senhor que vem… Paulo pede-lhes que sejam uma comunidade “santa” e irrepreensível, isto é, que vivam alegres, em atitude de louvor e de adoração, abertos aos dons do Espírito e aos desafios de Deus.

By Dr. Scott Hahn Third Sunday of Advent (Cycle B) The mysterious figure of John the Baptist, introduced in last week's readings, comes into sharper focus to-day. Who he is, we see in today's Gospel, is best un-derstood by who he isn't. He is not Elijah returned from the heavens (see 2 Kings 2:11), although like him he dresses in the prophet's attire (see Mark 1:6; 2 Kings 1:8) and preaches repentance and judgment (see 1 Kings 18:21; 2 Chronicles 21:12-15). Not Elijah in the flesh, John is nonetheless sent in the spirit and power of Elijah to fulfill his mission (see Luke 1:17; Malachi 3:23-24). Neither is John the prophet Moses foretold, although he is a kinsman and speaks God's word (see Deuter-onomy 18:15-19; John 6:14). Nor is John the Messi-ah, though he has been anointed by the Spirit since the womb (see Luke 1:15, 44). John prepares the way for the Lord (see Isaiah 40:3). His baptism is symbolic, not sacramental. It is a sign given to stir our hearts to repentance. John shows us the One upon whom the Spirit re-mains (see John 1:32), the One who fulfills the promise we hear in today's First Reading (see Luke 4:16-21). Jesus' bath of rebirth and the Spirit opens a fountain that purifies Israel and gives to all a new heart and a new Spirit (see Zechariah 13:1-3; Ezekiel 36:24-27; Mark 1:8; Titus 3:5). John comes to us in the Advent readings to show us the light, that we might believe in the One who comes at Christmas. As we sing in today's Responso-rial, the Mighty One has come to lift each of us up, to fill our hunger with bread from heaven (see John 6:33, 49-51). And as Paul exhorts in today's Epistle, we should rejoice, give thanks, and pray without ceasing that God will make us perfectly holy in spirit, soul, and body - that we may be blameless when our Lord comes.

Christmas 2020 ~ Christus Natus Est ~

“Glory to God in the highest and on earth Peace” Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

In the midst of darkening skies the Light is come! Over two thousand years ago in the village of Beit Sahour,

not far from Bethlehem, an angel appeared to a group of lowly men and women who were tending sheep. These were peo-

ple who would have been looked down upon because of their menial task of raising the animals that would be used in the

Temple sacrifices. Imagine their joy at the news that the One who would save them, EMMANUEL, had been born in the

city of David, very close to where they were. The sign that this was true was that they would find an infant wrapped in

swaddling cloths lying in a manger, a container used for feeding animals. The shepherds, hoping for liberation from the

oppression of their burdened life, went running to the manger. These were the first to receive the message of the birth of

the Savior, before any kings or wise men would arrive and see the Savior these men, women and children of the fields were

the first to see the Christ, the Lamb of God who would take away the sins of the world.

Jesus was born in history so that he might teach us how better to be children of God, brothers and sisters in the one

family of God. He comes to show us the Father’s mercy, becoming himself the door of Mercy through which we enter into

salvation. The sign is the same as that received by the shepherds, a child in a manger, the God of Merciful Love. “For God

so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God

did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.” (John 3:16-17)

At this time of year we all receive many requests for financial assistance. As much as possible it is our duty and our

salvation to do what we can. In your generosity, we ask that you not forget the retired priests of the Archdiocese in the

Christmas collection. Our Offertory at the Christmas Masses is given entirely to care for the retired priests of the Archdio-

cese. As has been done in the past few years, the money from the Kissing of the Baby Jesus will be sent to a charity that

provides for the needs of children.

As we pray for each other in a true sense of gift giving and Christian charity may you, and those you love, know the

JOY and PEACE of that first Christmas, which Joseph and Mary and the shepherds in the fields experienced. We pray that

the Peace & Blessings of our loving God may be yours abundantly at Christmas and in the coming year.

As you know I have been out of commission since Fr. Luiz and I had to quarantine because of contact with some-

one who was positive for Covid. Unfortunately, we both became positive also. Mine landed me in the hospital with viral

pneumonia. I thank God that it was a mild case of a Covid infection, many others are not so lucky and we have proof of

that even in our own parish. Sincere thanks for all your prayers! Please remember those who are still being affected by this

horrible pandemic and for all the caregivers who are truly angels!

We don't know which precise Scripture texts they were supposed to understand. Perhaps it was the sign of Jonah, who rose from the belly of the great fish after three days (see Jonah 1:17). Or maybe Hosea's prophecy of Israel's restora-tion from exile (see Hosea 6:2). Perhaps it was the psalmist who rejoiced that God had not abandoned him to the nether world (see Psalm 16:9-10). Whichever Scripture it was, as the disciples bent down into the tomb, they saw and they believed. What did they see? Burial shrouds in an empty tomb. The stone removed from the tomb. Seven times in nine verses we hear that word - "tomb." What did they believe? That God had done what Jesus said He would do - raised Him up on the third day (see Mark 9:31; 10:34). What they saw and believed, they bore witness to, as today's First Reading tells us. Peter's speech is a summary of the gospels - from Jesus' baptism in the Jordan to His hanging on a tree (see Deuteronomy 21:22-23), to His rising from the dead. We are children of the apostles, born into the new world of their witness. Our lives are now "hidden with Christ in God," as today's Epistle says. Like them, we gather in the morning on the first day of the week - to celebrate the Eucharist, the feast of the empty tomb. We rejoice that the stones have been rolled away from our tombs, too. Each of us can shout, as we do in today's Psalm: "I shall not die, but live." They saw and believed. And we await the day they promised would come - when we, too, "will ap-pear with Him in glory."

27º Domingo do Tempo Comum Na Palavra de Deus que hoje nos é proposta, cruzam-se vários temas (a fé, a salvação, a radicalidade do “caminho do Reino”, etc.); mas sobressai a reflexão sobre a atitude correcta que o homem deve assumir face a Deus. As leituras convidam-nos a reconhecer, com hu-mildade, a nossa pequenez e finitude, a comprometer-nos com o “Reino” sem cálculos nem exigências, a acolher com gratidão os dons de Deus e a entregar-nos confiantes nas suas mãos. Na primeira leitura, o profeta Habacuc interpela De-us, convoca-o para intervir no mundo e para pôr fim à violência, à injustiça, ao pecado… Deus, em re-sposta, confirma a sua intenção de actuar no mundo, no sentido de destruir a morte e a opressão; mas dá a entender que só o fará quando for o momento oportu-no, de acordo com o seu projecto; ao homem, resta confiar e esperar pacientemente o “tempo de Deus”. O Evangelho convida os discípulos a aderir, com coragem e radicalidade, a esse projecto de vida que, em Jesus, Deus veio oferecer ao homem… A essa adesão chama-se “fé”; e dela depende a in-stauração do “Reino” no mundo. Os discípulos, com-prometidos com a construção do “Reino” devem, no entanto, ter consciência de que não agem por si pró-prios; eles são, apenas, instrumentos através dos quais Deus realiza a salvação. Resta-lhes cumprir o seu papel com humildade e gratuidade, como “servos que apenas fizeram o que deviam fazer”. A segunda leitura convida os discípulos a renovar cada dia o seu compromisso com Jesus Cristo e com o “Reino”. De forma especial, o autor exorta os ani-madores cristãos a que conduzam com fortaleza, com equilíbrio e com amor as comunidades que lhes foram confiadas e a que defendam sempre a verdade do Evangelho.

Reflection on Christmas and the Incarnation Fr. Walter Carreiro

As you prepare to celebrate the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ, I invite you to reflect on the fact the God, who could never be contained by the world, the universe, and certainly our unworthy hearts and bodies, humbled Himself to be-come like us by being born to the Virgin Mary, in a stable, surrounded by animals. What a mystery and how much love does it take to do the same. How often do we refuse to even humble ourselves to work together or admit that we are un-worthy of much that we have received? And yet at each and every Mass we celebrate the Eucharist Christ chooses to come into the poor dwelling that I offer to Him. The more popular Prayer of Spiritual Communion is one written by St. Alphonse Liguori, CSsR. I came upon another prayer of Spiritual Communion written more than 100 years later by Cardinal Rafael Merry del Valle y Zuleta from Spain. It is an equally beautiful prayer inviting the Lord “into the poor dwelling” of the heart. He speaks of the sacrament of God’s love as the “ineffable” Eucharist (incapable of being expressed or described in words). In perhaps my favorite Eucharistic hymn, Gift of Finest Wheat, Omer Westendorf would describe the Eucharist as “The mystery of your pres-ence Lord, (which) No mortal tongue can tell, Whom all the world cannot contain comes in our hearts to dwell.” In His love, humility and generosity Christ, who could never be contained by the universe, comes into our poor and un-worthy bodies and hearts. Before becoming a cardinal, he served as the secretary of the papal conclave of 1903 that elected Pope Pius X, who is said to have accepted his election through Merry del Val's en-couragement. Pius X later appointed him as the Cardinal Secretary of State. Merry del Val's writings and example prompted greater popularity for the Litany of Humility, which was for some decades incorrectly attributed to him. A cause for his canonization was opened in 1953 at the behest of Pope Pius XII. He now has the title Servant of God. Prayer of Spiritual Communion At your feet, O my Jesus, I prostrate myself and I offer You Repentance of my contrite heart, which is humbled in its nothingness And in Your holy presence. I adore you in the sacrament of Your love, The ineffable Eucharist. I desire to receive you Into the poor dwelling that my heart offers You. While waiting for the happiness of sacramental communion, I wish to possess you in spirit. Come to me, O my Jesus, since I, for my part, am coming to You! May Your love embrace my whole being in life and in death. I believe in You, I hope in You, I love You. Amen.

Reflexão sobre o Natal e a Encarnação Padre Walter Carreiro

Enquanto se prepara para celebrar o nascimento de nosso Salvador Jesus Cristo, convido a refletir sobre o fato de que Deus, que nunca poderia ser contido pelo mundo, pelo uni-verso e, certamente, por nossos corações e corpos indignos, se humilhou para se tornar como nós ao nascer da Virgem Maria, em um estábulo, rodeado de animais. Que mistério e quanto amor é necessário para fazer o mesmo. Quantas vezes nos recusamos até mesmo a nos humilhar para tra-balhar juntos ou admitir que não somos dignos de muito que recebemos? E, no entanto, em cada missa que celebramos a Eucaristia, Cristo escolhe entrar na pobre habitação que Lhe ofereço. A Oração de Comunhão Espiritual mais popular é aquela escrita por Santo Afonso Ligorio, CSsR. Encontrei outra oração de comunhão espiritual escrita mais de 100 anos de-pois pelo cardeal Rafael Merry del Valle y Zuleta, da Espan-ha. É uma oração igualmente bela convidando o Senhor “à pobre morada” do coração. Ele fala do sacramento do amor de Deus como a Eucaristia "inefável" (incapaz de ser ex-pressa ou descrita em palavras). Talvez meu hino eucarístico favorito, Gift of Finest Wheat, Omer Westendorf descreveria a Eucaristia como “O mistério de sua presença Senhor, (que) nenhuma língua mortal pode dizer, Quem todo o mundo não pode conter vem em nossos corações para habitar.” Em Seu amor, humildade e generosidade, Cristo, que jamais poderia ser contido pelo universo, entra em nossos pobres e indignos corpos e corações. Que o vosso amor possa inflamar todo o meu ser, para a vida e para a morte. Creio em vós, espero em vós. Amo-vos. Amém.
