Definition

Positive attitude is defined as a helpful state of mind or afeeling regarding a situation or fact.

It is how we perceive events, experiences and things in our lives.

An individual with a positive attitude sees and findsopportunities while others do not. They choose to view theirate customer as an opportunity for service not as aproblem. There are countless examples in sports of teamsthat were perceived as the underdogs and then they forged

ahead and beat the favored team.

Basically, it is all in the head!

Benefits of Positive Attitude

A good attitude is an asset in personal & professional life

If you¶ve got a good attitude, chances are you brighten other people¶s day.

If you¶ve got a bad one, you may be alienating colleagues atwork and even your friends. It may be costing you apromotion or appointment to a new position.

Studies have shown that people want to be with those whohave a good attitude.

In fact, for some employers, a good attitude is sometimes amore important consideration than skills - you can train for skills, but it¶s difficult to work a bad attitude.

Positive Attitude

Attitude has a lot to do with interpersonal communications, self-

esteem and your perceptions of others and theirs of you.

A good attitude makes you feel better. Others see this and

judge you by that. People want to work in an upbeatenvironment, and attitudes play an important role in shaping

the work environment.

Your attitude is communicated to others in three ways - 7

percent by words, 38 percent by tone of voice and 55percent in non-verbal ways, such as posture.

Positive Attitude

All of us, at one time or another, express the three differenttypes of attitudes: positive, negative and neutral.

Those with a neutral attitude are sometimes the mostchallenging to deal with, these are individuals who are

³spectators in the game of life.

We often try to avoid contact with those carrying a negativeattitude, individuals who are ³critics of the game of life.´

We are drawn to those with a positive attitude, individuals who

are ³the players of the game of life.´

How to develop Positive Attitude

Always be Proactive

Look for positive solutions to challenging situations. Don't wait totake action. Be anxious to resolve issues because when theresolution stage is delayed, it generates more frustration and anger.Your genuine concern and upbeat willingness to take immediate

action will be remembered longer then the negative feelings.

People want to work with and be around positive people. You havethe power to create a positive thought process and focus on what isright with your environment rather then what is wrong.

Once, there were two shoe salesmen sent to a faraway land to sell

shoes. After the first day, one sent back a telegram saying "Thisplace is a disaster! No one wears shoes!". The other salespersonalso sent a telegram. His message was " This place is a gold mine!No one wears shoes!".

Is your glass half empty, or half full?

How to develop Positive Attitude

Avoid Negativity

Avoid people who are negative in thought and action.Surround yourself with positive people. Negativity breedsmore negativity. When you are around others who have a

positive attitude it will be easier for you to remain upbeat andfocused.

Thomas Edison, when asked what it took to discover thelight bulb, said it was a thousand-step process. He didn¶tlook at that as a negative; something new was learned ateach step.

Language

State what you can do, not what you can't. Rather thensaying "no, we don't accept checks," indicate "we'll gladly

accept your cash or credit card." Use positive terms. Insteadof calling a situation a problem, name it a challenge. Peopletend to focus and remember the negative words more thenthe positive.

Hear what you say to others. Listen to your tone of voice.

Mentally observe your body language. Are your statementsupbeat and positive, or negative and condescending? Is your message delivered with enthusiasm and a smile or lacedwith anger and frustration? People will mirror your messageand your body language. If your speech is positive you canexpect a favorable response.

Always be Responsible & Accountable

When a problem arises, resolve it. Avoid placing blame onanother department or employee for a mistake. When youblame someone else for the problem it only generates moreill feelings toward you. The key is the issue is to be resolved,so be accountable for your actions and provide alternativesin order to fix the situation.

Avoid Complacency

Recognize areas you need to improve. Establish personaland professional goals and objectives for improvement.Tackle the most difficult areas first. How to develop Positive Attitude

Insanity comes from doing the same thing over and over again, expecting new results but always ending with the sameresults.

To maintain sunny disposition, start each day with a pep talk to

yourself; make it a habit to enjoy the good moments;express, rather than suppress, your feelings; and surroundyourself with a positive environment.

You control your attitudes. No one can make you µanything¶ ±YOU make the choices.

Regardless of what happens to you, it¶s what you do that is theissue

Dealing with attitudes

How do you deal with those around you with negative or neutralattitudes?

It¶s really a matter of determining how much it bothers you.

 A five-step process

Step 1 Determine your involvement. Is this person important toyou? Has this attitude been demonstrated before?Does it bother you? Are you willing to invest time to tryfor a change? ³If you answer µno¶ to any of thesequestions, remove yourself from the situation. If you

answer µyes,¶ go on to step two.

Step 2 Seek to understand the other person. Try to determinewhat caused the behavior. Seek that person¶s thoughtson the matter and confirm your understanding of themby restating them. Then determine if you want a changein that person¶s attitude and behavior. If µyes,¶ go on tothe next step.

Dealing with attitudes

Step 3 Try to influence the individual¶s attitude byacknowledging the behavior that bothers you anddiscussing it with the person.

Step 4 Resolve the problem through mutually defined solutions

- the more the other person contributes to the solutions, the more the likelihood of success.

Step 5 Recover from the experience. Regain your positiveattitude, follow through with commitments you¶ve madeto the other person, and then be sure to acknowledge

changes in that person.

How to Have a Positive Attitude When

Things Go Wrong

Life is full of difficulties. How to maintain positive attitude whenthings go wrong? Here are some easy ways:

Think of similar difficulties that resulted in a positive outcome

Ask yourself what you did that made that situation turn out

okay for you. What specific things did you say or do tosuccessfully overcome that similar obstacle that you arefacing again today? Remember your previous solutions!

BrainstormCheer up! There is always a way out of a difficult situation,

and you always have options, even if you don't know whatthey are. Take some time to sit down, relax, and brainstormfor some possible solutions. This will help you to feel lesstrapped, stuck, or overwhelmed - which are normalresponses in such situations. Reducing these commonemotional responses will help you to think more clearly andto choose a solution.

How to Have a Positive Attitude When

Things Go Wrong

Choose a Solution

After you have brainstormed for various remedies for your problem, choose a solution. Choose the solution that soundsthe most effective to you (select only one), and keep in mindthat you are one step closer to resolving your difficult

situation!

Take Action

Take action! Be proactive and actualize your solution. Byactually doing something about your problem instead of staying stuck in the disappointment, fear, or overwhelming

mind-set of your problem, you will begin to feel more hopefuland excited about your solution.

How to Have a Positive Attitude When

Things Go Wrong

Focus on the Solution Instead of the Problem

Stay focused on your solution and avoid dwelling on your problem. Your solution will most likely create joy and, your problem will most likely create unpleasant emotions that willbe counterproductive to maintaining a positive attitude or

resolving your problem. Stay focused, and don't lose hope!

Be Flexible

Be sure that your solution isn't your real problem. Maybe thesolution that you have chosen isn't actually the best way of resolving your problem. If this is the case, be willing tochoose another option that might be more effective in solvingyour dilemma. Be open and flexible to choosing other alternative solutions.

How to Have a Positive Attitude When

Things Go Wrong

Avoid Telling Yourself Negative Things

Avoid telling yourself negative things like, "This is useless,""There's no hope," or "I'll never get through this."

It creates negative thinking²and negative thinking creates anegative attitude. Instead, tell yourself positive things like,

"I'm going to get through this" or "There is no problem that Icannot handle."

How to Have a Positive Attitude When You

 Are Stressed

Look for the Lesson

Looking for the lesson in any kind of situation (positive or negative) can help to improve your mood. Knowledge ispower! The more you know about your given situation, themore information you will have to come up with creative

solutions for current problems that are inducing stress. Askyourself, "What can I learn from this experience?" and learnas much as you can from each life experience.

View Mistakes as Learning Experiences

Expect to make mistakes. No one is perfect and nor anybodydo everything perfectly all the time. Expecting yourself to doeverything perfectly can put unnecessary pressure onyourself, and that can cause needless stress. Take thepressure off yourself to do everything perfectly, and beginviewing mistakes as an opportunity to learn. This candecrease your stress level and help you to maintain apositive attitude.

 Attitude is everything«««««««..

««««««««.remember

Positive people live tomorrowPositive people act as if there will be a million tomorrows, anegative person stays mired in a million yesterdays.

Positive people concentrate on the here and now.

Just because they believe in the future doesn't meanpositive people live in it. They know that the "here and now"is the only life we have. They make the most of the time theyhave, because they have a lot of things to accomplish.Positive people concentrate on the "here and now," not the"there and then."

Positive people see the best side of others. Most of us have something in our life that we're not tooproud of. We have flaws in our character. While the negativeperson concentrates on those flaws, in himself or others, thepositive person will concentrate on the best parts, not theworst. Think about the most positive person you know. Haveyou ever heard him say anything bad about someone else?

 Attitude is everything«««««««..

««««««««.remember

Positive people are goal-oriented.

Why goals? People with goals succeed because they knowwhere they are going...It's as simple as that." . Positivepeople choose their destination -- they don't just allow

themselves to be pushed along by the prevailing winds.

Positive people work to make the world better.

They make all sorts of contributions -- from planting flowersto coaching kids cricket teams. No matter what they do, theywork to make the world better, because they believe they

can make a difference.

 Attitude is everything«««««««..

««««««««.remember

Positive people take responsibility for their own moods andactions.

Negative people blame the stars, karma, God, and other people, positive people know that more than anything else, their own actions dictate their future success. Positive people

do not let their moods be dictated by the weather, the news,or the TV schedule. They know that their moods are under their own control, as are their actions. They accept theblame, or the credit, for the actions they have made, andgive credit when it belongs to their co-workers.

Positive people do not give up.

Positive people have learned that persistence pays off. Theydon't give up at the first sign of trouble, but keep going untiltheir goals are reached.

In lighter vein««.

Number the alphabets

 A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4, E=5, F=6««««. ««..till Z=26

Total the value of the letters in the word ATTITUDE

(A=1)+(T=20)+(T=20)+(I=9)+(T=20)+(U=21)+(D=4)+(E=5)

Total is 100!

Compare this with HARDWORK & KNOWLEDGE

Hardwork = 96 & Knowledge = 98

The only other word with a 100 is DISCIPLINEWhich is equally important as ATTITUDE!
