Easter Sunday (Cycle B) The tomb was empty. In the early morning darkness of that first Easter, there was only confusion for Mary Magdalene and the other disciples. But as the daylight spread, they saw the dawning of a new crea-tion. At first they didn't understand the Scripture, to-day's Gospel tells us. We don't know which precise Scripture texts they were supposed to understand. Perhaps it was the sign of Jonah, who rose from the belly of the great fish after three days (see Jonah 1:17). Or maybe Hosea's prophecy of Israel's restora-tion from exile (see Hosea 6:2). Perhaps it was the psalmist who rejoiced that God had not abandoned him to the nether world (see Psalm 16:9-10). Whichever Scripture it was, as the disciples bent down into the tomb, they saw and they believed. What did they see? Burial shrouds in an empty tomb. The stone removed from the tomb. Seven times in nine verses we hear that word - "tomb." What did they believe? That God had done what Jesus said He would do - raised Him up on the third day (see Mark 9:31; 10:34). What they saw and believed, they bore witness to, as today's First Reading tells us. Peter's speech is a summary of the gospels - from Jesus' baptism in the Jordan to His hanging on a tree (see Deuteronomy 21:22-23), to His rising from the dead. We are children of the apostles, born into the new world of their witness. Our lives are now "hidden with Christ in God," as today's Epistle says. Like them, we gather in the morning on the first day of the week - to celebrate the Eucharist, the feast of the empty tomb. We rejoice that the stones have been rolled away from our tombs, too. Each of us can shout, as we do in today's Psalm: "I shall not die, but live." They saw and believed. And we await the day they promised would come - when we, too, "will ap-pear with Him in glory."
2º Domingo do Tempo Comum A liturgia de hoje apresenta a imagem do casamento como imagem que exprime de forma privilegiada a relação de amor que Deus (o marido) estabeleceu com o seu Povo (a esposa). A questão fundamental é, portanto, a revelação do amor de Deus. A primeira leitura define o amor de Deus como um amor inquebrável e eterno, que continuamente reno-va a relação e transforma a esposa, sejam quais forem as suas falhas passadas. Nesse amor nunca desmentido, reside a alegria de Deus. O Evangelho apresenta, no contexto de um casamen-to (cenário da “aliança”), um “sinal” que aponta para o essencial do “programa” de Jesus: apresentar aos homens o Pai que os ama, e que com o seu amor os convoca para a alegria e a felicidade plenas. A segunda leitura fala dos “carismas” – dons, através dos quais continua a manifestar-se o amor de Deus. Como sinais do amor de Deus, eles destinam-se ao bem de todos; não podem servir para uso exclusivo de alguns, mas têm de ser postos ao serviço de todos com simplicidade. É essencial que na comunidade cristã se manifeste, apesar da diversidade de membros e de carismas, o amor que une o Pai, o Filho e o Espírito Santo.

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Think of these first weeks after Christmas as a sea-son of "epiphanies." The Liturgy is showing us Who Jesus is and what He has revealed about our relation-ship with God. Last week and the week before, the imagery was roy-al and filial - Jesus is the newborn king of the Jews who makes us co-heirs of Israel's promise, beloved children of God. Last week in the Liturgy we went to a Baptism. This week we're at a wedding. We're being shown another dimension of our relationship with God. If we're sons and daughters of God, it's because we've married into the family. Have you ever wondered why the Bible begins and ends with a wedding - Adam and Eve's in the garden and the marriage supper of the Lamb (compare Gen-esis 2:23-24 and Revelation 19:9; 21:9; 22:17)? Throughout the Bible, marriage is the symbol of the covenant relationship God desires with His chosen people. He is the Groom, humanity His beloved and sought-after bride. We see this reflected beautifully in today's First Reading. When Israel breaks the covenant she is compared to an unfaithful spouse (see Jeremiah 2:20-36; 3:1-13). But God promises to take her back, to "espouse" her to Him forever in an everlasting covenant (see Hosea 2:18-22). That's why in today's Gospel, Jesus performs His first public "sign" at a wedding feast. Jesus is the di-vine Bridegroom (see John 3:29), calling us to His royal wedding feast (see Matthew 22:1-14). By His New Covenant, He will become "one flesh" with all humanity in the Church (see Ephesians 5:21-33). By our Baptism, each of us has been betrothed to Christ as a bride to a Husband (see 2 Corinthians 11:2). The new wine that Jesus pours out at today's feast is the gift of the Holy Spirit given to His bride and body, as today's Epistle says. This is the "salvation" announced to the "families of nations" in today's Psalm.

Anointing of the Sick The church encourages & invites all who are ill, who are to undergo surgery, or who are confined to their home due to illness to be prayed over & anointed with sacred oil. This can take place after Mass, at home or at the hospital. Please
do not wait for the last moment for yourself or a loved one to be anointed. The last sacrament is Viaticum or com-munion for the dying. Please speak to a priest for anointing.
