Northern Manhattan is mourning the death of 18-

year old Barnard College student Tessa Rane Majors, who was killed in Morningside Park on December 11.

Majors was stabbed to death in the early evening near the park entrance on 116th Street and Morningside Drive, just a few blocks from where she attended school.

Police officials have said Majors was stabbed by a group of teens during a robbery attempt at the base of the stone staircase leading up to Morningside Drive, near the edge of Columbia University campus. She staggered up the stairs to street level, where she was found by a Columbia security guard around 6:45 p.m., police said.

She was pronounced dead after being rushed to the hospital.

Majors, a musician who was interested in journalism, was a first-year student at Barnard who moved to New York City from Charlottesville, Virginia.

“I’ve always loved writing,” said Majors during a podcast with a local newspaper editor in Augusta, Virginia. “I’ve been writing in various forms since I was a little kid. I used to write in my journal, write about myself, write

La Borinqueña, the young female Puerto Rican heroine, has been the star of a series of graphic novels since 2016.

Now her fans can purchase an array of new merchandise inspired by the character, with proceeds targeted to provide aid to Puerto Rico.

Wearing superhero regalia inspired by the Puerto Rican flag, La Borinqueña stands as a fierce champion of the environment who possesses superhuman strength and the ability to fly.

The online store centered on the heroine has just launched a variety of products such as mugs, posters, t-shirts, and personalized comic prints. Fans can also order La Borinqueña comics and an action figure.

The new products are based on partnerships with Fine Art Pop and BKNY Printing Co.

“Our shop is really something that we created to offer our fans something special, but also to raise money to help others,” said creator Edgardo Miranda-Rodríguez.

Proceeds from the product sales help seed the La Borinqueña grant program, which provides $10,000 grants to community-based organizations based in Puerto Rico helping to rebuild the island.

The grants are awarded annually during a ceremony in San Juan.

“It can recognize the work of real heroes on the ground, but also it’s a way to have these organizations meet each other,” said Miranda-Rodríguez. “A lot of times these groups rebuilding the island work in isolation.”

The visual artist, entrepreneur and activist has also released Ricanstruction: Reminiscing

& Rebuilding Puerto Rico, which pairs La Borinqueña with fellow iconic superheroes such as Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and The Flash.

“DC Comics gave us permission to use of all of those classic characters,” said Miranda-

Rodríguez. “We were humbled and surprised to be able to do that.”

“There’s a story in it where Wonder Woman interacts with the parrots of Puerto Rico,” he added. “It was great to bring those iconic characters into the world of Puerto Rico.”

Since first creating La Borinqueña, Miranda-Rodriguez has specifically sought to bring awareness to climate change and its impact on Puerto Rico through her storylines.

“In the first book, she is dealing with a major tropical storm. That was nine months before Hurricane María,” he said. “María only helped me amplify what I was doing, and laid the foundation for us to raise funds for the island as well.”

Miranda-Rodríguez said he hoped the La Borinqueña character would be inspiring to comic book fans who don’t often see Latinos represented in the world of comics.

“There is a significant underrepresentation for superheroes of color, especially women of color,” he said. “There’s an audience that is hungry for heroes who look like us.”

The next installment in the comic series will be released in 2020, he said.

“They’re seeing her as a symbol of hope. They see themselves in her struggle,” remarked Miranda- Rodríguez of fans of his title character. “We have a comic book that’s immediately connecting people to Puerto

Rico through popular culture and through our grant program we can affect change.”

NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan hosted an opioid overdose education and Narcan training event recently – and Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer was in attendance to receive her own certification.

“It’s very easy,” explained Brewer. “[It’s] something that more people should do.”

At the event, Herbert Quiñones, an overdose prevention trainer with the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), trained several dozen people on how to administer Narcan, a nasal spray form of naloxone, a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses.

At the end of the session, attendees, including Brewer, were provided with kits containing Narcan and a blue card.

“The card authorizes you to carry the Narcan kit and also protects you from liability,” Quiñones said.

In 2017, New York City encountered one overdose death every six hours, according to the city’s Health Department. Nearly 1,500 city residents died due to overdose that year.

Quiñones said that fighting the opioid epidemic involves getting the general public involved in helping out. He acknowledged that some New Yorkers might be reluctant to intervene when someone is experiencing an overdose because they are afraid of liability.

“They’re worried that instead of saying thank you, somebody could say ‘I’m going to sue you,’” he said. “Luckily, there has not been an instance of this type of lawsuit. And the card protects you from liability.”

Some of the signs a person is overdosing is if they are unconscious, not breathing, and blue or grey lips, Quiñones said.

While some naloxone kits contain medication that must be injected, Quiñones explained that the kits containing the nasal spray have proven to be effective.

“It’s more user friendly,” he said. “Not everyone feels comfortable giving someone a needle, but it’s easy for anyone who can spray something up someone’s nose.”

Brewer said she would continue to urge others to seek out additional information and resources.

“I encourage people to get trained.”

Metropolitan’s Emergency Department began distribution of overdose rescue kits with Naloxone in early 2018. Kits are available on demand, at no charge, and without a prescription.

“Opioids are a crisis in our country, and in our community,” explained Alina Moran, CEO at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan. “There is a lot of work to be done on a national level, but I’m glad to see so many of you here today committed to being active locally and to learning how to save a life.”

“Our staff provides training on how to properly use the spray to everyone who receives a kit,” she said. “We are currently on track to distribute upwards of 400 kits this year.”

Quiñones said that the city saw a slight reduction in overdose deaths in 2018.

“We would like to think these strategies help,” he said. “When it comes to helping each other, we have to step up.”

The trailer for the much-anticipated In The Heights movie may have made its official premiere elsewhere, but on Wednesday, December 11 the cast and crew were welcomed home with a raucous and spirited affair that included at 809 on Dyckman. Care can be a question of chance.

So charged a host of advocates and elected officials who gathered to rally against what they say are the skyrocketing costs of hospital care. Members of unions 32BJ and DC37 came together with elected officials on City Hall late last week to denounce exorbitant hospital pricing that they say is endangering patient care.

“When you go into a hospital for treatment, it’s the financial equivalent of playing Russian roulette,” said Councilmember Mark Levine outside City Hall on Thurs., Dec. 12th. “You never know if you’re going to walk about with health care debt in the thousands or tens of thousands of dollars.”

Levine called for hospitals to produce

more “transparency and consistency” in pricing so patients know what they’ll be charged. “There are people in debt who are being sued by hospitals,” he said. “It’s an insane system and not defensible.”

“The hospital pricing in this city is out of control. It is irrational, it is not transparent,” argued Larry Engelstein, 32BJ’s Secretary-Treasurer. “The same procedure at one hospital can cost six times as much as another hospital chain.”

The rally was held prior to a joint City Council hearing hosted by the Committee

on Health and the Committee on Hospitals, where Councilmembers reviewed the high costs of healthcare.

At the hearing, DC37 President George Gresham questioned why hospitals are allowed to charge such exorbitant prices for medical procedures. “It has nothing to do with the quality of care. These are just for-profit decisions,” he said. “It’s time for us to start questioning, what is the rationale?”

Elisabeth Benjamin, Vice President of Health Initiatives for the social service organization Community Service Society (CSS), noted that the NYC Health + Hospitals system has stopped suing patients over unpaid medical patients.

“I’d like to see every other public hospital in New York State do the same,” she said.

“The single factor that’s had the most profound, negative impact on healthcare coverage in New York City is the cost of in- and out-patient care provided by the city’s non-profit, private hospitals,” said District Council 37 Executive Director Henry Garrido during the hearing.

“Adding insult to injury is the fact that hospital executive compensation has soared along with the cost of care,” he remarked. “In 2018, the top 10 highest paid hospital CEOs received combined salaries, perks and other compensation totaling more than $53 million. Put NYCHA on the naughty list – again.

Public Advocate Jumaane Williams has unveiled the annual Worst Landlord Watchlist, which puts negligent landlords in the spotlight.

At a tenants’ rally in Foley Square on Mon., Tues. 16th, Williams revealed the top offenders on the list, which is issued annually by the Public Advocate’s office.

Named as the Worst Overall Landlord a second year in a row was the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA). Williams pointed out that the agency had more than 340,000 open work orders as of November.

“This is after a new [federal] monitor and a new chair,” he said.

“NYCHA is in a league of its own,” Williams stated. “They’re in the Hall of Fame of bad landlords.”

It is the first time that Williams has issued the list, which includes 100 names, since assuming the role of Public Advocate.

First implemented in 2010 by then-Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, the annual list is compiled using violation data from the Department of Buildings (DOB) and Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD).

“In looking at buildings and speaking with tenants, we see the real human cost of negligence,” Williams said. “We are

highlighting the landlords because they are affecting hundreds of thousands of tenants every day.”

Jason Korn was named the worst individual landlord, with an average of 2,877 open housing violations each month. Korn operates 15 buildings with more than 700 units.

Lea Potter, Executive Board President at NYCHA’s Abraham Lincoln Houses said the conditions at her building are “deplorable,” with

repair tickets “that take months to address,” ceiling damage, mold, and rats.

She said that NYCHA maintenance workers have not been doing daily cleaning.

“I have to speak up, because if you don’t, nothing gets done,” Potter said. “I love where I live, and it needs to become better. I’m not asking, I’m demanding, that it becomes better.”

Kim Statuto who lives at one of Abdul Khan’s properties, 1515 Selwyn Avenue, said the landlord attempted to convert the building’s boiler from oil to gas in 2016.

“We were a sitting time bomb waiting to explode,” said tenant Kim Statuto.

It was the Cardinal’s turn to dazzle in crimson red this past Sat., Dec. 14th at the Kmart Astor Place.

Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan was joined by Monsignor Kevin Sullivan, Executive Director of Catholic Charities of New York, and more than 300 hundred volunteers of the non-profit at the store to make purchases on behalf of under-served families. The costs are covered by Catholic Charities.

The event was organized in part with St. Nicholas Project, a program that provides critical social services, including nutritious meals, job readiness training, housing assistance, immigration and refugee resettlement counseling, to families in need.

The group, adorned in bright red sweaters, filled the aisles with lists in hand to purchase needed items, including winter coats, sweaters, hats, and gloves. Each volunteer received a profile of a family to shop for, complete with wish lists and stories, and a budget.

Sullivan noted that the lists focused primarily on important items.

“The families that Catholic Charities serve throughout the year sometimes don’t have necessities to get through the winter,” he said. “We thought, ‘Isn’t Christmas the wonderful time to make sure the families we’re helping year-round have a little bit extra at Christmas?’” “So we’re buying sweaters, we’re buying coats, socks, blankets,” he added. “It’s a way for us to say the spirit of Christmas is the spirit of giving.”

One shopping cart being wheeled past was filled with winter clothes for a family of six, including a newborn. The recipients are a family from the Mercy Center in the

Bronx, which offers immigration help and adult education, among other services.

Dolan opted for a St. Louis Cardinals baseball cap to complete his festive attire as he mulled over his selections.

“First of all, [this] was unique, because I never go shopping,” he laughed. “Secondly, it was moving. You just kind of feel the unity and solidarity with people all over the world who are shopping.”

“The idea that a college freshman at Barnard was murdered in cold blood is absolutely not only painful to me as a parent, it’s terrifying to think that that could happen anywhere,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio.

“It’s unbelievable to me that that could happen here, next to one of our great college campuses,” he said. “It’s an unacceptable reality.”

The day after the killing, a makeshift memorial of flowers and other mementos was assembled by Barnard students near the campus’s main entrance on Broadway. Another memorial sprung up near the steps of Morningside Park.

Neighborhood resident Elana Kilkenny said that Majors’ murder was shocking.

“It was unfathomable to me,” she said, recalling that she had walked near the park entrance shortly before Majors was killed.

She said she was struggling to explain the

incident to her two children, ages 9 and 13. “We ended up having a really difficult talk about it,” Kilkenny remarked. “It’s hard to tell kids that age. You want them to feel safe in the world.”

City Councilmember Mark Levine told Manhattan Times that he was “terribly concerned” that such a crime could be carried out at such a time of day — in the early evening when people are getting out of work and school activities.

“This is a heavily used park, very family-oriented park, a place for many young people and students,” he said. “It was a relatively early hour. That should be a time when people feel safe.”

Levine called for improved lighting in the park, especially near Morningside Drive, and increased use of security cameras.

He explained that that community residents and local elected officials had been asking for a permanently stationed Parks Enforcement Patrol (PEP) officer to be in the park due to an increase in the number of robberies in the park.

As of December, there had been 20 robberies in and around Morningside Park this year, compared to seven in the same period in 2018.

There will be a robust NYPD patrol plan in the park over the next several weeks, Levine said, which includes 12 to 15 police officers and four PEP officers in the park during the evenings.

Despite the enhanced presence, Levine cautioned that the city should not use excessive

police tactics in the interest of public safety.

“I don’t want us to overreact and return to the kind of overly aggressive and racially biased policing of the Guiliani and Bloomberg errors. That would be an enormous mistake,” he said.

On Sunday evening, hundreds of people gathered at Morningside Park for a candlelight vigil to honor Majors. Elected officials in attendance vowed that safety measures would be increased in the park.

Kilkenny said she felt sad for the victim’s family.

“It’s unnerving,” she said. “Nobody should lose a child. She had her whole life ahead of her.”

“La ven como un símbolo de esperanza”, dijo Miranda-Rodríguez sobre los fanáticos del personaje principal.

Los ingresos de la venta de productos ayudan a otorgar subvenciones a organizaciones comunitarias en Puerto Rico.

“Nuestra tienda es realmente algo que creamos para ofrecer a nuestros fanáticos algo especial, pero también para recaudar dinero para ayudar a otros”, dijo el creador, Edgardo Miranda-Rodríguez.

Los ingresos de las ventas de productos se destinan a ayudar al programa de subvenciones La Borinqueña, que otorga ayudas de $10,000 dólares a organizaciones comunitarias en Puerto Rico que asisten en la reconstrucción de la isla.

Las subvenciones se otorgan anualmente durante una ceremonia en San Juan.

“Puede reconocer el trabajo de héroes reales en el terreno, pero también es una forma de que estas organizaciones se conozcan”, dijo Miranda-Rodríguez. “Muchas veces estos grupos que reconstruyen la isla trabajan de forma aislada”.

El artista visual, emprendedor y activista también ha lanzado Ricanstruction: Reminiscing & Rebuilding Puerto Rico, que combina La Borinqueña con superhéroes icónicos como Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman y The Flash.

“DC Comics nos dio permiso para usar todos esos personajes clásicos”, dijo Miranda-Rodríguez. “Nos sentimos halagados y sorprendidos de poder hacer eso”.

“Hay una historia en la que la Mujer Maravilla interactúa con los loros de Puerto Rico”, agregó. “Fue genial traer esos personajes icónicos al mundo de Puerto Rico”.

Desde la creación de La Borinqueña, Miranda-Rodríguez ha buscado específicamente crear conciencia sobre el cambio climático y su impacto en Puerto Rico a través de sus historias.

“En el primer libro, ella está lidiando con una gran tormenta tropical. Eso fue nueve meses antes del huracán María”, dijo. “María solo me ayudó a amplificar lo que estaba haciendo, y sentó las bases para que también recaudemos fondos para la isla”.

Miranda-Rodríguez dijo que espera que el personaje de La Borinqueña sea inspirador para los fanáticos de los cómics que a menudo no ven a los

latinos representados en el mundo de los cómics.

“Hay una sub representación significativa de los superhéroes de color, especialmente las mujeres de color”, dijo. “Hay una audiencia que tiene hambre de héroes que se parezcan a nosotros”.

La próxima entrega de la serie de cómics se lanzará en 2020, dijo.

“La están viendo como un símbolo de esperanza. Se ven a sí mismos en su lucha”, comentó Miranda-Rodríguez sobre los fanáticos de su personaje principal. “Tenemos un libro de historietas que conecta inmediatamente a las personas con Puerto Rico a través de la cultura popular y de nuestro programa de subvenciones, podemos afectar el cambio”.

Edificios (DOB, por sus siglas en inglés) y del Departamento de Preservación y Desarrollo de la Vivienda (HPD, por sus siglas en inglés).

“Al mirar los edificios y hablar con los inquilinos, vemos el costo humano real de la negligencia”, dijo Williams. “Estamos poniendo en la mira a los propietarios porque están afectando a cientos de miles de inquilinos todos los días”.

Jason Korn fue nombrado el peor arrendador individual, con un promedio de 2,877 violaciones de viviendas abiertas cada mes. Korn opera 15 edificios con más de 700 unidades.

“Casi 3,000 [violaciones] es un número del que cualquiera debería avergonzarse”, dijo Williams.

Además de Korn, el resto de los cinco peores propietarios individuales para 2019 son Nathan Montgomery (promedio de 1,581 violaciones abiertas del HPD), Eric Silverstein (promedio de 1,144 violaciones abiertas del HPD), Abdul Khan (promedio de 1,135 violaciones abiertas del HPD), y Chris Deangelis, promedio de 978 violaciones abiertas del HPD.

Pero fue NYCHA lo que provocó un desprecio particular de Williams y sus defensores.

Lea Potter, presidenta de la Junta Ejecutiva de las Casas Abraham Lincoln de NYCHA, dijo que las condiciones en su edificio son “deplorables”, con multas de reparación “que demoran meses en solucionarse”, daños en el techo, moho y ratas.

New York Attorney General Letitia James, who was Williams’ predecessor as Public Advocate, recalled how landlords “would run to my office trying to fix the problems” because they didn’t want to be included on the list.

“Shame works,” remarked James. “Shame the landlords, shame the banks. Because they turned a blind eye to how the other half lives.”

“We make noise and we make change,” he said, while stressing that his hope is that landlords can improve enough to get removed from the watch list.

“I want landlords off of this list. If you’re on this list, that means that tenants are hurting,” Williams said. “When they do get off, we want to highlight them just as much so people know there’s a pathway to get off and tenants fare even better.”

Williams dijo que su lista tiene la intención de avergonzar a los propietarios para que tomen medidas correctivas.

“Hacemos ruido y hacemos cambios”, dijo, mientras subrayaba su esperanza de que los propietarios puedan mejorar

lo suficiente como para ser eliminados de la lista de vigilancia.

“Quiero que los propietarios estén fuera de esta lista. Si estás en esta lista, eso significa que los inquilinos están sufriendo”, dijo Williams. “Cuando bajen, queremos resaltarlos tanto para que la gente sepa que hay un camino para bajarse y que a los inquilinos les va aún mejor”.
