Interviewing Ray Bradbury, many years ago, he insinuated to me
that History was written by artists, and quoting John Ruskin, he
explained that great Nations write their autobiographies in three
manuscripts: The book of their Heroic deeds, The book of their
words, and the Book of their Arts. None of them would be understood
without having previously read the two others; though of the three,
the only one truly trusting and reliable is the latter: The Book of their
Arts.
The perception of the future stemmed from this Book; and that
is how the Commission of Transportation in Los Angeles (USA)
understood it. They hired Bradbury, a science fiction writer, in order
to provide clues for the solution of problems that were troubling that
city, not only in the transportation system, but also in the negative
externalities that this system brings about for its inhabitants.
In order to find similarities for what I said before, it should suffice
to read Arthur Miller’s Einstein and Picasso. Space, Time, and the
ravages of Beauty. Here he reveals astounding parallels between
two geniuses with information on how they lived and worked.
original catalogo babel.indd 6-7 10/2/09 18:39:52
Picasso’s cubism is connected to scientific and philosophic ideas
of Henri Poincaré, and positions him in the context of Parisian’s
intellectuals. Meanwhile, Albert Einstein is forced to look for a job
at the Swiss Registration Office, since his professors did not have
faith in his academic future. Nevertheless, Einstein did not delay in
laying the foundations for a scientific revolution. Without knowing it,
both artist and scientist were working for the same purpose: finding
a new representation of space and time.
And Alicia shows up; as a continuum where she discloses with her
oeuvre reality in the Greek sense: A-letheia. Alétheia, that which
unifies and reunites, fragmented thought with the ‘at’ symbol that
welcomes. Alétheia plays with the Idéa and in the koinonía of ideas,
while these attract each other at the moment of appearance, and
thus constitute the being of the entity. She invites us to remove the
veil that covers her last sculpture. If it were inhabitable in the classical
way, it would be considered architecture. Her entire work borders on
architecture, by making us see how she has created an inhabitable
space for thought. We are disclosing and revealing her Poetry that
stems from Poiéin. This can be applied to Poetry, but at the same
time it implies a whole manual and intellectual production that
contains any degree of creativity, allowing us to watch for concrete
clues toward the Logos Opticos from a contemporary perspective.
That dimension so vivid in the Celtic culture, with its explanation of
the In-Between, takes them to a world where dreams come true. Her
particular talent allows her to give Place a meaning, giving a keen
access to the interstice of perspective/gaze where this nine story
tower grows. This is the entry to the place in which our dreams will
inhabit after a sinuous journey, for her work is not easy or simple;
starting from the not at all trivial nine meters spike.
In the Creation the worlds are three: Heaven, Earth and Hell, and
each world is symbolized by a triad; that’s why ‘nine’ is the number
that closes the third cycle starting from the unit, and with this, the
Creation. The same thing happens with geometric representations,
where the period (dot) is the unit; the line is the duality, the opposition
of something against something else, that is, the distance that
separates them. With the number three the unity is recovered by
forming something closed in itself, for three periods demarcate a
«AR-ROUB» o «AR-RUBA», significa cuatro.
a Alicia.
emplearon los teólogos para aclarar ciertos puntos de la doctrina;
flat figure; but only with the number four can a body be assembled,
that is, a figure in space. There, it demands the fourth period, which
is our point of view.
In this whole universe, everything is rhythm, alternation (given
through the light of this sculpture) and geometry, and as a result,
the relationships that fall off can be transmitted under the form of
harmonic figures. For, if the Cosmos is number and rhythm, we can
flow through the harmony of sounds to the harmony of souls. As
Proclo says: “The number is the glorious father of the gods and of
men”; and his followers identify the First Cause - The Unit - with God.
That God through which our thoughts navigate without fragmenting.
“AR-ROUB” or “AR-RUBA” means four. We could think that
this is sheer coincidence, but I don’t grant Alicia that possibility.
She is far more intelligent and enormously perceptive to fall for
coincidences. Her ‘at’, which is the fusion of the letters AD in
Latin, means first of all ‘toward’; term that floods Alicia’s oeuvre.
Das Geviert, that I cannot translate clearly, except when being in
front or below this ‘at’.
Although what’s stated previously is my The-Orato, The-Orao or
my Point of View, I think that the equivalence letter-number is still in
force in the Christian World, it remains so in an underground way.
That is, it was employed by theologians in order to clarify certain
aspects of the doctrine. Saint Ireneo, for example, explains why the
Church admits four gospels in the New Testament, not one more,
not one less, and he does so by saying:
“In the world we live in there exists four regions or four main
winds: Given that the Church is spread out all over the earth,
and given that the Gospel is founder of the Church and breath
of life, it is reasonable that for sustaining the Church, four pillars
spreading incorruptibility and life for men everywhere should
exist. From this it is assumed without the slightest doubt, that
the Verb of God has given us a quadruple Gospel, inspired only
by a single Spirit”.
Alicia’s “toward”. That proposed journey that is crowned by an ‘at’,
that seen from its base, blends the letters A and D. Giorgio

Arquitecto.
Stabile, professor of History at the University La Sapienza in Rome,
discovered an original document from 1536, where the @ symbol
was employed along with the amphora. This was how the @ sign
joined the navigation world during the XVI century; of the adventure
and the challenge that entailed crossing towns and seas with sailing
ships full of exotic products. Let’s remember “Rumbo Weste” and its
dancing ‘ats’.
Today, the Venetian’s amphora, the Spanish ‘at’ (arroba) and the
Anglo Saxon ‘at’ invites us to navigate through the net of nets.
From link to different electronic world sites, it came to be one of the
most used symbols in the virtual space, this time not through the
daring merchants, but by means of the instantaneous long distance
communication. And Alicia challenges velocity with a protective
period contained in this very symbol, with the necessary place of
reflection.
Stabile states that “no symbol is born out of nothingness and no
symbol is chosen by chance”. Alicia did not choose the ‘at’ symbol,
but it did come out of her perception in what could be amalgamated
between Freedom/Destiny. Her experience with the four winds, in
“Free Will” (Libre Albedrío), where we navigate through insinuated
routes, yet thoroughly studied.
Alicia opens up a unique opportunity with this sculpture, higher than
any other form of artistic expression. I repeat to myself and refer to
my fascination for the interstices of her perspective, for the beautiful
possibility that a human being should be extremely generous as to
share with us, in the humbleness of form, a haven for thought. In its
transit to the journey that holds the profound meaning of a symbol
that sums up Alicia Larraín’s exploration; about the Freedom of
paths that she offers to the interlocutor of her work.
I’m left captivated, silenced before this work, and I am only able to
remember in that perspective what’s written in some very old stones
at my University in England: Every time human faculties reach their
peak, they are necessarily expressed through art.

LECTURA DE OBRABABELDE ALICIA
Juan G. Ayala
I
instala – planta a Babel.
I
Tower of Babel is a concept
Alicia’s Babel is an urban sensation
Alicia’s Babel is an installed reality
Alicia positions us in the abyssal abyss,
How to respond?
Let’s witness the ‘manifestation of what’s beautiful’,
That fleeting moment of beauty declaimed in an installed tree.
II
From the work’s design, in a reflexive and abyssal creative process,
Alicia installs –plants Babel.
Daring handling of technologies, adjusted and ever hazardous
manufacture process, present and distant, for the arti-fact; Alicia’s
urban work.
Planting alludes to the trace, that of human-footprint-sole, witness
track, this one, of an erect body.
original catalogo babel.indd 12-13 10/2/09 18:40:00
y algo de implante;
lo que horada y germina
lo que penetra y vivifica
y,
To plant, also carries with it to implant, that which we im-pose
because we put in, imposing but also impotent before the potency
of reality that is imposed over what’s implanted. Babel must eagerly
declaim its potency. Install its potency.
But planting also has something of drilling a hole through the earth,
seed to seed, germination and dissemination.
Babel installed, hazardous artifact installed, contains something
from plant and something from implant;
What pierces and germinates
What penetrates and brings life
And,
What’s strange and estranged,
What’s never melted and confused with the welcoming earth, exiled
and missed for ever.
III
When Babel turned into paper, we trapped the word; we cornered it to
fixity and norm. It is true that the gift of understanding made possible
a common construction, but the structure that first consolidates and
facilitates the coexistence of what’s diverse, soon castrates and
annihilates for the sake of the accepted norm.
Do structure and norm break from the ‘at’ symbol?
What does it appear from Babel?
What´s estranged appears, as well as what’s implanted, but also
what’s planted and disseminated. It’s at night when that ‘at’ wraps up
the place of the ‘internet user’, when these navigate preferably through
their places! That intimate nocturnal navigation, that of their loves,
that of their desires, that of their restlessness, of their preoccupations
and that of their post-occupations. When the ‘internet user’ uses his
nocturnal time for himself, the ‘at’ symbol shines from Babel.
The winding of Alicia’s work declaims in shadow winks, in sparkles
and reflections. The calculation foreseen by the artist sought for
certainties, it wants to be certain, but it cannot accomplish it because
it is a work of art, its vital condition is to live among the implant and
the semen.
Tower of Babel –Tree of Babel- as every tower scans its sense
between defense and attack, its fate is letting itself be or imposing
its being.
‘At’ as a symbol of the human condition? Globalized from the
hypertext, it is exceeded by the metatext, it must encode in itself
the relationship between the intertext, the paratext and the context,
transcending into metatext; it must reflect from within, tightening the
implant and the seed to where Babel invites us.
If we admit that that Babel was exceeded by the paper, times of the
‘learned city’, today, in times of the ‘digital city’, the ‘at’ sign summons
us in the line where identities dilute, represented in the annulment of
the support that we can grasp; that which is turned virtual, impossible
to seize, infinitely mobile and changing.
A platitude of the urban language is talking about navigating,
about layers and profundities, of text maps, of crossings between
the texts. When we reflect about that, the metaphor of navigating
or submerging into the ‘abyssal digital universe’, strictly speaking
means the adequate way of naming the moves executed by the data;
these respond to an eccentric topological model. Any navigator is
peak and deep abyss, tip and cape are confused in a vectors system
that holds a double meaning, and where everything is coming and
going, permanently and intensely.
We represent that kinetic frenzy, plastically, through permanently
ascending and falling diagonals, in eternal ring roads, in infinite
windings, as in Alicia’s Babel, who enriches the topological
model through sparkles, mirrors, refractions and shadows;
all these declaim their spaces and places in the surrounding
walls, as necessary resonances of the clamor that holds the
‘at’ sign.
IV.
Finally, Alicia assumes a semiotic transferring exercise, re- signifying
the elements. Forces and tensions are rendered visible. In Alicia’s
Babel there are twists, diagonal axis that structure and enfold, both
technological and semantic. Steel shelters in its face the surrounding
nature; steel is dyed with shades of green and with forms, but also
original catalogo babel.indd 14-15 10/2/09 18:40:00

with faces and figures. The walking viewers do not know that Alicia
steals their bodies, seizing them into Babel. The one that observes
her work, or the one that in a hurry, does not lifts his or her eyes, is
always left stuck in Babel. All the urban disarray remains in Babel.
For the installed observer Babel is dyed with colors, colors from all
the races and cultures in the cyberspace? Possible diversities in a
globalized world? Of the green that flees from our cities? That lost
urban planting green?
The nocturnal ‘at’ reintegrates us what we bestowed during the day.
Concepts and sensations materialized in declaimed nocturnal lights,
from the tree that’s been planted and implanted.
Babel, collecting during the day and returning back at night.
That, in the same tension of the implant and the seed. The topological
orb urges Babel every passing day; those, similar to the ones Alicia
creates, the opening understanding of the metatex that advents into
the hypertext.
Tower of Babel subtly tightens the citizen’s path, the traveling
subject installed by day, that turns into an ‘internet user’, is aided
with the sparkles and reflections from the daylight, returning us
what we are through images and nocturnal projections. Will
these suffice to retain the individual human condition in times
where uniformity and norm fix and regulate the globalized
coexistence?
A way of being, a way of inhabiting, a way of dressing…
That globalization that assumes diversity and localism, unfailingly tends
to that one discourse, an only model, an only way to install oneself in
the world. The well known contradiction of the global village.
We need more Babel.

a conformar nuestro lenguaje cotidiano.
Tower of Babel integrates a series or an enunciative program that
tenses an array of aspects and practices regarding communication
in our contemporary life. This array highlights as the most
distinguished iconic element, the neutral figure of the ‘at’ sign.
What tenses the figure of the ‘at’ sign and the references to the
world of the internet user and the cyberspace reader, among
other things, is the new statute of the private space. Yet, in more
substantive terms we could postulate the way in which what’s local
can survive in the context of globalization.
The ‘at’ symbol is turned into a sort of articulator for our
relationships; a presence that’s far too recurrent and that begins
to shape our every day language. The great irony, in this context
of alleged total communication, seems to be that very one
denounced by Adorno and Horkheimer in the first half of the XXth
Century in ‘Dialectic of Enlightenment’ (“communication proceeds
to equate men by means of their isolation”). This is an expensive
topic for the Theoreticians of communication that are linked to
the Critical Theory, whether in Frankfurt or in Latin America. But
original catalogo babel.indd 18-19 10/2/09 18:40:08
accedemos a entregar información a nuestro gentil interlocutor,

the credit given to that emptiness, made transparent through
internet communication, also represents a call of attention call
within a logic that can be understood through the biopolitical
perspective developed by the late Foucault. As we have available
more communication channels, we also expose ourselves: our
ways of relating to others are render recognizable. As Bauman
claims (while reading Mark Poster), our bodies are informatically
fastened, “they no longer provide a haven where one can avoid
being watched; nor they are a bastion around which a resistance
line can be erected”. If the panoptic effect sought the immobilization
of its subjects, that is, a local settlement, the synoptical one is,
by nature, global. The main difference resides, nevertheless, in
the fact that the synoptical one operates according to our own
informant’s free will: Every time that in a pharmacy or in the
supermarket we agree to provide information to our pleasant
interlocutor, what we are doing is, purely and simply, contributing
to widen the possibilities of this power mechanism.
The idea of total communication is closer to the idea developed
by Mark Augé when he refers to the super-modern mobility: “It is
necessary to add that super-modern mobility responds to a great
extent to the ideology of the globalization system: an ideology of
the appearances, of what’s evident and ever present, even willing
to capture all over again those who try to analyze or criticize it”.
The Tower of Babel conceived by Alicia Larraín is an oeuvre that is
open to an even wider inter-discursivity, but that can basically be
demarcated from two places that are quite common to the debate
of our late modernity: one of those places deals with the idea of
space/time compression, a natural derivative of globalization and its
technologies; an ‘other’ place, the one that should appeal to us most;
that’s the one that carries human consequences in a presumably
global culture, but that is not yet able to save the great differences
and distances that render our surroundings a Babelic space,
fundamentally because of the absence of a dialogue understood
as an ethical act and as action, something that the Russian Mikhail
Bakhtin was already claiming in “Art and Responsibility”, a brief
and beautiful 1929 essay that I invite you to read.
