Aprender a cultura e os hábitos de outros países colabora e muito para o aprendizado de uma segunda língua. Ao assistir filmes e seriados, prestamos atenção em alguns detalhes, como por exemplo, nos EUA e Inglaterra, é comum vermos leite vendido também em garrafas plásticas (galões), e não só em caixas como aqui no Brasil. Ao prestar atenção a estes detalhes, também notamos que a unidade de medida, tanto de líquidos como de peso são diferentes. Nos EUA, para a medida de frutas, objetos e pessoas, eles utilizam o "pound" (abreviação = lb) que é equivalente a aproximadamente 450g. Já em produtos embalados, principalmente pacotes pequenos, como caixas de cereais, pacotes de bolachas, etc. é comum o uso da medida "ounce" (clique para ouvir a pronúncia) (abreviação = oz) que equivale a aproximadamente 28 gramas. Já na Inglaterra, o "pound" também é utilizado, para frutas e carnes. Para o peso de pessoas, é comum a medida "stone" (aproximadamente 6 kilos) e também o "ounce". Por exemplo, uma pessoa com 63kg pesa aproximadamente 10 stone. Perceba que a palavra fica no singular, veja: He weighs 12 stone. Ele pesa 76 kilos. Já para falar de capacidade podemos usar o "pint" (pouco menos de meio litro) e o "gallon" (pouco menos de quatro litros). Para líquidos como a cerveja, é comum o uso da medida "pint". Você também encontra facilmente a embalagem de "a gallon of milk", uma embalagem plástica com quase 4 litros de leite. A gasolina também é medida em "gallon". Outra unidade comum é o "quart" (abreviação = qt) que nada mais é que ¼ do gallon, que dá quase 1 litro, além da medida "fluid ounce" (abreviação = fl oz) que é equivalente a pouco menos de 30ml. Em uma embalagem de produto de limpeza, alvejante para roupas, por exemplo, você encontraria a seguinte informação: 66 FL OZ (2.46 QT) 1,95L
