    Offertory -

Following COVID-19 restrictions and guidelines from the Archdiocese, the offertory collections are held in the safe for one week. The obvious reason is that the virus can last on paper for up to 5 days.

Sincerest Thanks & Blessings to those who have made efforts who make on-line donations, mail or drop by their Parish Support!

This Christmas, please consider giving back to the dedicated priests in our Archdiocese who work tirelessly for us each day of the year. Our parish will hold a special Christmas collec-tion for the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust, an independent trust providing for the health and well-being of the 580 active and senior priests in good standing in our Archdiocese. Amid these difficult times for our Church, our priests need your support now more than ever.

Thank you for your generosity and prayerful support of our priests.

    Solemnity of Mary,

    Mother of God

    Christmas Greetings!

With our very different Mass celebrations on Thursday and Fri-day, Christmas has just begun! Today within the Octave of Christ-mas we celebrate the Feast of The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, a wonderful time to celebrate family and ask the Lord’s special blessings upon all families and our parish family also. Alt-hough we all had much different celebrations than in the past, I hope all of you had a wonderful and blessed Christmas. While it is normally a hectic time to get to our destinations but not this year, I hope you had time with family on the telephone or via Zoom.

The Christmas collection is so very important for the retired priest benefits and clergy trust fund. Thank you to all who gave to this important collection this past week. It is necessary to realize that this collection is used for the Priest retirement and health fund, as well as priests on leave and is very important for that specific pur-pose. I pray that at each collection there will be a much-needed increase at Easter and in the future, especially as I approach that magic time of retirement.

    I would like to express my sincere thanks for the gifts and good wishes given at Christmas. In a special way I’d also like to thank the many people who made our celebrations special in many ways: Thanks to Fr. Luiz (especially for taking up the slack while I have been out of commission), Liz Carreiro for her varied activities and help during this time of year, Mariazinha Sousa, Cinira Vicente, Iberia Frias, Alda Ferreira, Shalom Community and all who visually enhanced our worship space along with all those who helped clean;

thanks to Luis Travassos, Philip & Jacob Chaves for their musical talents at Mass; the sacristans, Lectors, extraor-dinary ministers of Holy Communion, and special thanks to Tony Pereira, his family and the volunteers helping you get checked in and settled down for the Masses, having done so since Masses began during the pandemic. To all, a most sincere and heartfelt thanks! And to you, the parishioners, who enhance the liturgies by your presence: may the Lord abundantly bless you in the New Year with his goodness!

Just a reminder that everyone must use a mask coming to, leaving and while at Mass. Please only remove the mask at the time of communion only after you have received the host from the priest or minister of Communion.

Friday, January 1st is the Solemnity of Mary, The Mother of God.

The Mass schedule for this day is as follows:

New Year’s Eve (Thursday, December 31st): 5:00 p.m. Bilingual Mass

New Year’s Day (Friday, January 1st): 10:00 a.m. Mass in English 12:00 p.m. Mass in Portuguese May the Lord’s Grace, Blessings and Peace be yours during the coming year!

Peace, Fr. Walter, Fr. Luiz, and Parish Staff

By Dr. Scott Hahn Easter Sunday (Cycle B) The tomb was empty. In the early morning darkness of that first Easter, there was only confusion for Mary Magdalene and the other disciples. But as the daylight spread, they saw the dawning of a new crea-tion. At first they didn't understand the Scripture, to-day's Gospel tells us. We don't know which precise Scripture texts they were supposed to understand. Perhaps it was the sign of Jonah, who rose from the belly of the great fish after three days (see Jonah 1:17). Or maybe Hosea's prophecy of Israel's restora-tion from exile (see Hosea 6:2). Perhaps it was the psalmist who rejoiced that God had not abandoned him to the nether world (see Psalm 16:9-10). Whichever Scripture it was, as the disciples bent down into the tomb, they saw and they believed. What did they see? Burial shrouds in an empty tomb. The stone removed from the tomb. Seven times in nine verses we hear that word - "tomb." What did they believe? That God had done what Jesus said He would do - raised Him up on the third day (see Mark 9:31; 10:34). What they saw and believed, they bore witness to, as today's First Reading tells us. Peter's speech is a summary of the gospels - from Jesus' baptism in the Jordan to His hanging on a tree (see Deuteronomy 21:22-23), to His rising from the dead. We are children of the apostles, born into the new world of their witness. Our lives are now "hidden with Christ in God," as today's Epistle says. Like them, we gather in the morning on the first day of the week - to celebrate the Eucharist, the feast of the empty tomb. We rejoice that the stones have been rolled away from our tombs, too. Each of us can shout, as we do in today's Psalm: "I shall not die, but live." They saw and believed. And we await the day they promised would come - when we, too, "will ap-pear with Him in glory."

Holy Family (Cycle B) The birth of Jesus marks a new creation, the start of a new heavens and a new earth (see Isaiah 65:17; 2 Peter 3:13). That's why the first words of today's Gospel reprise the Bible's first words - "In the begin-ning" (see Genesis 1:1). Jesus is the Word that God spoke when He said, "Let there be," and all things came to be (see Genesis 1:3,26). The Wisdom through whom all things were made (see Proverbs 8:22-31; Wisdom 7:21-27), Jesus is also the mighty Word by whom God sustains all things. The Word of God (see Revelation 19:13) has become flesh. This is the mystery we sing of in today's Psalm - the revelation of mankind's salvation in the sight of the nations. The Word comes as God and king, we hear in today's First Reading. Enthroned at God's right hand (see Psalm 110:1), He is the royal Son who has received all the nations as His inheritance (see Psalm 2:8). The Word comes, too, as a heavenly high priest, as we hear in today's Epistle. Through His blood, He accomplished atonement and purification from sin (see Exodus 30:10; Hebrews 6:20; 10:3-7, 11-13). And by this, He has made it possible for each of us to live as children of God, as "new creations” (see 2 Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 6:15). In the beginning, God made men and women in His image (see Genesis 1:27). In the new creation, He brings that divine image to perfection in Jesus, who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation, and the firstborn from the dead (see Colos-sians 1:15, 18). Let us resolve this Christmas to give Jesus rule over our hearts, to ever more mold our hearts in the image of our Creator - that the Christ-child may be the firstborn of a worldwide family of God (see Colos-sians 3:10; Romans 8:29).
