at recentemente, a qualidade do modelo e do processo de
qualidade, detalhe e rigor dimensional passou a depender
tecnologias e materiais sucessi-
vamente mais performantes.A
tecnologia de impresso tridi-
mensional PolyJetTM , adquirida
pelo Centimfe no mbito do pro-
jecto FRF, exemplo da grande
evoluo que as tecnologias de
PR tm vindo a sofrer, baseando
o seu funcionamento no princi-
pio da impresso tridimensio-
nal. Esta tecnologia permite
construir rapidamente um
modelo fsico com elevado deta-
lhe e rigor dimensional, a partir
Visto toda a rea
aking masters and tools from masters is one
of the most ancient manufacturing process-
es in Industrial history. However, until
recently, the quality of the master and reversion
process (creating the tool from the master) depend-
ed, mainly, on the ability of the craftsman who pro-
duced it.
With the new Rapid Prototyping technologies, quali-
ty, detail and dimension-
al accuracy depend no
longer on the operator,
but on the technology.
Therefore, the pressure
upon these technologies
has been increasing,
since their reproduction
capacity must improve.
For this reason, produc-
ers have been trying their
best to progressively
develop better perform-
ing technologies and
materials.
The PolyJetTM three
dimensional printing
technology, purchased by
Centimfe within the scope of the FRF (Rapid Tooling)
project, is an example of development in Rapid
Prototyping technologies, based on the three dimen-
sional printing principle. It is possible, with this
technology, to quickly build a very detailed, dimen-
sionally accurate, physical master from a 3D-CAD
model, manufacturing it through an additive process
of photopolymerizable acrylic resin layer deposition,
without requiring any post processing.
Starting from a 3D-CAD file, in STL format, the
machines software virtually sections the master in
transversal layers of 16mm. A printing head, with
hundreds of micro-nozzles, injects a 20mm layer of
resin onto the platform where the master is being
constructed (with a definition of 600x300x1270 dpi),

but only in the areas where there is a master, leav-
ing the remaining ones with no resin. The resin is
polymerized by the ultraviolet radiation, during the
injection process, and the passage of a cylinder
adjusts the thickness of each layer to 16mm, right
after it is deposed. Since the whole construction area
(270x300mm by 200mm high) has no material when
the manufacturing begins, a water-soluble support
resin in injected at the same time as the acrylic resin
of the master, creating a support bed to the master.
The master will be ready for use, after washing off
the support resin. The intrinsic characteristics of
this technology grant the prototypes an excellent
surface finishing, detail and dimensional accuracy,
with a high potential in the rapid manufacture of
functional masters and masters for indirect conver-
sion processes.
There are some significant
differences between 3D
printing machines and
other RP equipments, since
it is possible to install
them in offices. In short,
they are very safe, noise-
less and easy to use.
Even though they have
been available in the mar-
ket for over seven years,
3D printing technologies
have been used mainly in
the manufacture of con-
ceptual masters to help in product development.
PolyJetTM technology stands out from the remaining
ones for several reasons: it is simple, very similar to
the 2D Ink-Jet printing principle; it requires no post-
cure or infiltration processes of the masters; it uses
only one resin for construction and one for support,
both deposited at the same time; and it is more effi-
cient and rapid, since the construction material is
applied only to the areas where there is a geometry,
as opposed to other processes where the whole plat-
form is filled with material.
It is possible, this way, to manufacture functional
prototypes with excellent finishing and dimensional
accuracy, which can be used, for example, to check
fittings or movements, something out of reach with
the remaining 3D printing technologies.
The PolyJetTM technology, which combines the advan-
tages of 3D printing with a technology with high
standards of quality in prototype manufacturing, is
an enormous progress in terms of technological
development in rapid prototyping equipments.
modelo.
Terminando a construo, apenas necessrio remover a
Em resumo, so equipa-
so 3D tm sido utilizadas funda-
mentalmente para fabrico de
modelos conceptuais auxiliares
no desenvolvimento de produto.
A tecnologia PolyJetTM destaca-se
das demais, no s pela simplici-
dade da tecnologia, aproximan-
do-se como nenhuma outra do
principio da impresso Ink-Jet a
2D, no requerendo qualquer
movimentos, aplicaes impensveis at agora com as res-
Prototipagem Rpida.
