Ground Engaging Tools Bulldozer Blades

Straight Blade (S)A good general purpose blade for most dozing applications. Available formost machines.

Universal Blade (U)A straight blade with large wings to carry large loads more efficientlyover long distances. Available only for larger models.

Semi-U Blade (SU)A straight blade with small wings to provide better load carrying char-acteristics for mid-sized and large machines.

Cushion Blade (C)A relatively narrow blade, primarily for pushing scrapers.

Power Angle and Tilt Blade (P)A very versatile blade for smaller machines.

Angle Blade (A)An economical, light to medium duty blade designed for use on D8 andsmaller machines where the ability to side-cast is desired.

D11 CARRYDOZERS


CARRYDOZER GET

Due to its shallow cutting edge angle (35 vs. 56), the D11 CD blade has only 1.5" (38 mm) of usable wear surface compared to a standard dozers 2.618" (66.5 mm). Failure to change cutting edges and end bits at this lowerwear limit will result in extensive damage to the cutting edge support, end bit support and excessive gusset wear.

The Reversible Cutting Edge System offers greater wear life along with a lower cost per hour than the One-wayCutting Edge System. For additional information, reference IRM GET05-09 (PELJ0520).

CUTTING EDGE SUPPORTSFOR D6R THRU D11R BULLDOZER BLADES

The cutting edge support is an integral part of the blade structure to which the cutting edges and endbits are bolted. These cutting edge support plates offer the same high quality materials and dimen-sional precision as the factory originals. Due to the critical nature of the bolted connection betweenthe GET and dozer blade, a genuine Cat cutting edge support will guarantee dimensional accuracy.Since some of these parts are MAO, made as ordered, check your parts system for availability.

Description

These cutting edge support plates are available for factory bulldozer blades on D6R thru D11R TrackType Tractors. The cutting edge support is an integral part of the blade structure that mounts the cuttingedges and end bits. See the Illustration 1 (Part Identification) on next page for details. The cutting edgesupport consists of one piece for Straight, Angle, and Carrydozer blades. The Universal and Semi-Ublades use a three-piece cutting edge support system that consists of one support in the center alongwith another support for the right and left hand sides. Cutting Edge Supports table on page 2-28 showsthe required cutting edge support part numbers for the corresponding D6R thru D11R bulldozer blades.

Features and Benefits

The cutting edge support provides a structure to which the cutting edge and end bit are bolted. Prolonged

operation with loose hardware can cause the bolts to elongate the mounting holes in the support. Thismakes it increasingly difficult to keep hardware tight. Repeatedly burning-off hardware also weakensthe support around the bolt holes. If cutting edges and end bits are not replaced soon enough, severewear and damage can occur to the cutting edge support. If a blade is suffering from any of these prob-lems, a genuine Cat cutting edge support will ease the pain with its guaranteed dimensional accuracy.

Installation Instructions

Accurate positioning and welding of a new support is critical. The dimensions for the proper angle() and distance (X) from the center of the bolt hole in the cutting edge bolt hole to the lower edge ofthe moldboard are located in Illustration 2 (Critical Dimensions) below. For end supports, distance(X) is from the center of the bolt hole in the bottom row to the lower edge of the moldboard.

Failure to adhere to these dimensions could result in improper fit up as well as poor GET performance.

All gussets and structural supports that were removed must be replaced. Use E7018 welding rod or anequivalent for all welding.

Bulldozers / CompactorsBULLDOZER BLADES

Caterpillar bulldozer blades are designed for tough doz-ing, reclamation and push-loading jobs. They are availablein six configurations. (See descriptions below.) Cuttingedges and end bits are designed and manufactured to

specifications that provide long wear life and the strengthnecessary to be compatible with the increased productiv-ity of Caterpillar bulldozer blades.

Straight (S) Blade is a good general purpose blade formost dozing applications.

Universal (U) Blade is designed with large wings tomore efficiently carry large loads over long distances.Available only for D7 and larger models.

Semi-U (SU) Blade is basically a straight blade withsmall wings to provide a blade with better load carry-ing characteristics. Available for D5 and larger models.

Cushion (C) Blade is a relatively narrow blade designedprimarily for pushing scrapers.

Power Angling and Tilt (P or PAT) Blade is the mostversatile blade. Available for D6 and smaller models.

Angle (A) Blade is an economical, light to mediumduty blade designed for use on D8 and smaller machineswhere the ability to side-cast is desired.

Thru-hardened DH-2 steel insures Caterpillar bulldozeredges provide the greatest possible strength and maxi-mum wear resistance. Because of DH-2 steel, Caterpillaris able to offer a free edge for one that breaks duringoperation.

For longer edge life in abrasive conditions and increasedpenetration capabilities in compacted materials, Caterpillar

offers optional edge thicknesses for many dozer models.Consult part number pages of this section to determinewhere optional thickness edges are available.

Multi-section Edges

Caterpillar offers bulldozer edges in sections for easier han-dling, storage, installation, and turning. Maintenance timeis reduced. And since pieces can be replaced, switched, orturned individually, users can save money by getting maxi-mum wear life from each piece. Note: For special guidanceon when or when not to recommend turning and switching,see Customer Service Tips at the end of this section.

END BITS

Extended Wear Life (EWL) have a contoured design which matchesthe cutting edge thickness in the bolt hole area and are the thicker in thewear area which extends beyond the support. This additional wear materialprovides an excellent cutting-edge-to-end-bit wear ratio in abrasive condi-tions and provides for longer end bit life.

General Duty (GD) have a contoured design which matches the cut-ting edge thickness in the bolt hole area and is thicker, but not as thick asthe EWL, in the wear area that extends beyond the support. They are wellsuited to most dozing applications (9W, 8E part numbers in GD column).It is made from thru-hardened DH-3 steel for the D7-D11 machines andthru-hardened DH-2 steel for the D3-D6 machines.

Finish Dozing (Level Cut) match the depth of cut of the cuttingedges and protect the blade corner in low impact, low abrasion materials.They are recommended for finish and semi-finish dozing. Not available forthe largest dozers. It is made from thru-hardened DH-2 rolled plate steel.

Heavy Duty Mining End Bits and Edges for high-abrasion and/orhigh-impact applications where penetration is not a problem. These sys-tems will significantly extend edge and end-bit life and provide increasedresistance to breakage.

This is a three-piece system with a center edge 2-3/8" (60 mm) thick, andright- and left-end edge/end-bits which are 4-3/4" (120 mm) thick. Theend-edge/end-bits are made from two 2-3/8" (60 mm) thick sectionswelded together at the end-bit position. Thicker end bits are required tomatch end bit to cutting-edge wear patterns.

The heavy duty options are made from Caterpillar DH-2 flat-plate sectionswhich are through-hardened for superior strength and wearlife capabilities.

Abrasion/Impact for high-abrasion applications where both penetra-tion and wear-resistance are needed such as dozing clay, loam, silt, sand,and gravel. Features a 16 degree angle for better penetration. It is hot-cupped from DH-2 steel and thru-hardened for greater wear life (3G, 1U,7T part numbers in GD column).

Tamping Foot

Caterpillar tamping feet are designed for use in low impact conditions.They are manufactured from DH-2 Steel and heat-treated for strength and

long wear life.

Rock Tamping Foot

Rock tamping feet are designed to withstand the impact encountered whencompacting rocky material. They are manufactured from DH-2 Steel andheat-treated for strength and long wear life.

ARM Chopper Blades

Chopper blades are designed specifically for use in sanitary landfill appli-cations. They provide good traction and aggressive chopping action in alltypes of trash. They are manufactured from heat-treated DH-2 Steel.

Plus Tip (Weld-on)Thick-walled DH-2 steel designed specifically for landfill applications.Offers improved compaction and traction ability compared to currentchopper blades and competitive tips. They have more wear material andfewer teeth required per wheel than competitive teeth and complete wearlife when the wheel assembly is rotated. Has Abrasion Resistant Material(A.R.M.) applied across the top for increased traction. 10,000 hours or4 years of service life prorated warranty (See Warranty).

CUSTOMER SERVICE TIPS

1. Keep hardware tight. Loose or missing bolts increase loads and cancause hardware failure. In addition, prolonged operation with loosehardware can cause bolts to elongate mounting holes in the support.This makes it increasingly difficult to keep hardware tight. Repeatedburning-off of hardware has the same effect. And burning weakens thesupport around bolt holes.

To insure tight hardware:

After many hours in high impact conditions, bolts used on GET compo-nents could experience metal fatigue. If bolt loosening occurs after fol-lowing recommended mounting procedures, bolt stretch may haveoccurred. Use new bolts and nuts when installing new GET components.

When installing new cutting edges, or end bits, be sure that the sup-porting surfaces are free of dirt, debris, paint, scale, rust or weldsplatter. Mating surfaces must be clean and flat to insure maximumclamping force is obtained.

Bolt and nut threads must be clean. Do not apply lubricant of any typeto GET hardware.

When installing cutting edge bolts, start at the center and work outtoward the ends, or begin at one end and work to the other. Neverwork from both ends toward the center.

When installing end bits, start at the middle and work toward the out-side edge. Finish the sequence by then tightening from the middle andworking to
