O INGLS COMO LNGUA INTERNACIONAL

Assim como no a direo do vento que determina o rumo do navegador,

no a lngua que o mundo fala que determinar o nosso destino.

O PASSADOAnalfabetismo era comum na Idade Mdia.Quando um rei precisava comunicar-se comoutro, contratava um escriba para desenhar a

mensagem em linguagem escrita. fato sabido,por exemplo, que Carlos Magno, no sculo VIII,era analfabeto. A inexistncia da imprensadificultava a padronizao da ortografia, fazendoda escrita uma arte complexa. A arte de bemescrever era uma habilidade profissionalespecializada, ao alcance de poucos. Esta talvezseja a razo pela qual em 1500 a expedioportuguesa sob o comando de Pedro lvaresCabral trouxe Pero Vaz de Caminha comoescrivo da armada.

Por volta de 1700 o ndice de pessoas

alfabetizadas na Europa era de apenas de 30 a40 por cento. Esse mesmo ndice, por volta de1850, j era de 50 a 55 por cento, enquanto quedurante a segunda metade do sculo 19 ahabilidade de escrever tornou-se umaqualificao bsica do ser humano. No sculo 20o analfabetismo tornou-se definitivamente umadeficincia intolervel em qualquer plano social,em qualquer profisso. Um analfabeto nos pasesdesenvolvidos de hoje seria uma pessoatotalmente marginalizada.

Isto que aconteceu com a habilidade de ler eescrever, est comeando a acontecer com ahabilidade de se dominar uma segunda lngua.Se compararmos a importncia de se falar umalngua estrangeira 50 anos atrs com anecessidade hoje da pessoa serbilnge, pode-se facilmente entender a ameaa que omonolingismo representa e imaginar o problemaem que se constituir quando nossos filhostornarem-se adultos.

THE BACKGROUND

Illiteracy in the Middle Ages wascommon. When one king needed tocommunicate with another, he would hirea scribe to draw the message in writtenlanguage. It is well known the fact thatCharlemagne (8th century) was illiterate.The unavailability of printing made writingsystems non-standard and complex. Theart of writing was a professional skill notavailable to everyone. That is perhapsone of the reasons why the Portuguese

expedition with Pedro lvares Cabral incommand brought Pero Vaz de Caminhaas the official writer.

By 1700, Europe's literacy rate rangedfrom 30 to 40 percent; by 1850, 50 to 55percent; and by the second half of the19th century writing became a basicqualification in the human societies. In the20th century illiteracy became definitelyan ailment in any field, in any profession.Today an illiterate person in a developedcountry is an outcast.

What happened with the skills of readingand writing will soon happen with theability to speak a second language. If wecompare the importance of speaking aforeign language 50 years ago with thenecessity it represents today, we canforesee how important it will be by thetime our children become adults.

econmico da Inglaterra no sculo 19,alavancado pela Revoluo Industrial, e aconseqente expanso do colonialismo britnico,o qual chegou a alcanar uma vasta abrangnciageogrfica e uma igualmente vasta disseminaoda lngua inglesa.

Em segundo lugar, devido ao poderio poltico-militar do EUA a partir da segunda guerramundial, e marcante influncia econmica ecultural resultante, que acabou por deslocar oFrancs dos meios diplomticos e solidificar oingls na posio de padro das comunicaesinternacionais.

O PRESENTE

A atual busca de informao aliada necessidade de comunicao em nvel mundial jfez com que o ingls fosse promovido de lnguados povos americano, britnico, irlands,australiano, neozelands, canadense,caribenhos, e sul-africano, a lngua internacional.Enquanto que o portugus atualmente faladoem 4 pases por cerca de 195 milhes de

pessoas, o ingls falado como lngua maternapor cerca de 400 milhes de pessoas, tendo j setornado a lngua franca, o Latim dos temposmodernos, falado em todos os continentes porcerca de 800 milhes de pessoas (Todd iv, minhatraduo).

Estimativas mais radicais, incluindo falantes com nveisde menor percepo e fluncia, sugerem a existnciaatualmente de um total superior a um bilho. (Crystal360, minha traduo)

Alm disso, h estimativas de que 85% daspublicaes cientficas do mundo; 75% de todacomunicao internacional por escrito, 80% dainformao armazenada em todos oscomputadores do mundo e 90% do contedo daInternet so em ingls.

Acrescente-se a isso a reduo de custos depassagens areas, o que aumenta contatosinternacionais em nvel interpessoal. Em paralelo,a atual revoluo das telecomunicaesproporcionada pela informtica, pela fibra tica, epor satlites, despejando informaes via TV oucolocando o conhecimento da humanidade ao

alcance de todos via INTERNET, cria o conceitode auto-estrada de informaes. Estes dois

More radical estimates, which includespeakers with a lower level of languagefluency and awareness, have suggested thatthe overall total is these days well in excessof 1,000 million. (Crystal 360)

In addition, it is estimated that 85 percentof all scientific publications, 75 percent ofall international communication in writing,80 percent of all information in the world'scomputers, and 90 percent of Internetcontent are in English.

The inexpensiveness of air transportationhas increased interpersonal contactsworldwide. Computer, optical fiber, andsatellite technologies likewise have madepossible a boom in telecommunications,bringing up the concept of information

Ao assumir este papel de lngua global, o inglstorna-se uma das mais importantes ferramentas,tanto acadmicas quanto profissionais. hojeinquestionavelmente reconhecido como a lnguamais importante a ser adquirida na atualcomunidade internacional. Este fato incontestvel e parece ser irreversvel. O inglsacabou tornando-se o meio de comunicao porexcelncia tanto do mundo cientfico como domundo de negcios.

Philip B. Gove, no seu prefcio ao Webster'sThird New International Dictionaryilustra:

Hoje j previsvel que dinheiro e riquezamaterial sero substitudos por informao econhecimento, como fatores determinantes naestruturao da futura sociedade humana eproficincia na linguagem de ento seressencial para se alcanar sucesso.

THE FUTURE

It is predictable today that wealth will giveway to knowledge and information indetermining the shape of the futurehuman society, and speaking thecommon world language will befundamental to achieve success.
