InterfacesThe FastNet base unit supports:• 18 digital inputs• 14 digital outputs• 8 analogue inputs• 1 Ethernet port • 5 RS232 ports • 1 RS485 port• 1 R-Bus expansion port • 9 ... 30 VDC supply The physical connection of these inputs and outputs is via removable screw terminal connectors, making isolation and removal of a FastNet RTU very simple and quick.

Digital OutputsThe digital outputs are flexible and can be assigned individually or as ‘paired outputs’. The unit also fully supports ‘select before execute’ output function, allowing additional control security. This feature is an option, so that it can be disabled if the user wishes to keep the communication to the units to a minimum, such as when a narrow band communication system is deployed.

The digital outputs are fully configurable and support both pulse and toggle options, and the pulse times are individually user configurable.

Digital InputsDigital inputs can also be assigned individually or in pairs and have a programmable ‘debounce’ or ‘delay’ time. When as-signed as a pair, the ‘on’ and ‘off’ delay times can be config-ured in order to avoid unwanted state changes. The RTU will not transmit the ‘unknown’ circuit breaker which has a certain amount of ‘travel time’ between opened and closed positions.

The digital inputs also support ‘chatter control’ which prevents an input from permanently sending changes of state, if connected to faulty equipment which is changing its value constantly. This feature is very useful in preventing one RTU from dominating a communication channel.

FastNet RTU for Real Time Monitoring

FastNet is a compact RTU for electricity transmission and distribution networks, principally for use with distribution automation equipment in the secondary electricity networks. It can also be used as a data concentrator and a primary SCADA RTU.

Easy Configuration and Set-up As an option, the FastNet comes supplied with a memory card slot, which can be used to store all of the unit’s configuration parameters. It makes set-up easier as well as replacing units as simple as swapping memory cards from one FastNet to the next. It also means that configuration can be achieved just by bringing the memory card to the site in order to configure the unit, making installation and maintenance easier and more secure.

The memory card can also be used to store the event log for the unit, allowing study of ‘sequence of events’ data. The FastNet RTU can also be configured via Ethernet and incorpo-rates a memory card for easy upgrading.

Easy I/O Expansion The FastNet is designed to support either additional ‘extended I/O’ modules or further ‘daisy-chained’ FastNet RTUs. One option to increase the number of digital IO is to connect maximum ten RTU-16D cards to the FastNet through R-bus. Each RTU-16D card has 16 digital inputs and 16 digital outputs. It means that the maximum amount of digital inputs is 178 and maximum number of digital outputs is 174.Analogue Inputs

The eight analogue inputs are also fully configurable and have programmable sampling times and support for ‘dead-banding’ in order to reduce data traffic without compromising performance. A dip switch allows the user to set the analogue measurement mode between voltage and current.

Inputs can be used for both AC and DC signal inputs. These inputs can also be averaged over configurable time periods if required, and both scaling and offsets can be applied to the values.

Flexible Communication SolutionThe FastNet supports both polled and ‘event-triggered’ communication sometimes referred to as ‘report-by-exception’ communication. Since both modes are supported it is usual that a background health poll routine is supplemented with event triggered communication. Individual inputs can have a different class assigned to them depending on whether they are to be detected only during health poll or as a triggered event.

The FastNet supports a number of communication connection options. It has one RS485 connection, five RS232 ports while an RJ45 port provides Ethernet connection. There is one RS232 port that is reserved for service and support and another for programming on the front panel. Port forwarding is available on all communication ports.

Modbus MasterFastNet can act as a Modbus RTU master for other RTUs acting as Modbus RTU slaves.
