chamava-se “Pax Julia”, em celebração da pacificação

da Lusitânia.

During the Roman domain, Beja was called “Pax Julia”,

in celebration of the pacification of Lusitania territory.

OUTBeja é um oásis de história e tranquilidade. No meio da planície alentejana, a história e a gastronomia assumem um papel fulcral. Existem registos históricos que atestam que esta região já era habitada na Idade do Bronze e que, em 48 a.C. o Imperador romano Júlio César lhe deu o nome “Pax Julia”(Paz de Júlio) e declarou esta cidade como capital regional, sendo palco de muitas conquistas e reconquistas. Um passeio pelas ruas antigas da cidade traduz-se numa viagem pela história de várias eras.

Beja is an oasis of history and tranquillity. In the heart of the Alentejo plain, history and gastronomy play a crucial role. Historical records show that this region was already inhabited during the Bronze Age. In 48 B.C., the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar named the region as “Pax Julia” (the peace of Julius) and came to declare it the capital town. Beja was the stage of many conquests and reconquests. A tour through the oldest streets of the city is a journey through its history.
