Are we compassionate for people? One of Jesus’ most compassionate expressions to the crowd came in Matthew 11 with these familiar words, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matt. 11:28). Jesus knew the hurts and needs of the people and He invited each one of them to turn to Him to find genuine comfort and life-changing help in their time of need. As we continue this newsletter series on why new people would become part of this church, it is important for us to recognize that new people will often come our way because they are in need. Our church campus and our very lives are planted right in the heart of a world that is broken and filled with pain. We see evidence of this whenever we turn on the TV and we experience it sometimes in our own lives. Where should we turn and where should others turn when seasons of trouble come crashing down upon our lives? Consider a time when you turned to God in the midst of a crisis or personal need. Did you have a Christian friend or small group of trusted believers to minister to your needs? Sometimes we might be cynical when people come our way only because they are in pain. Do people sometimes turn to God for selfish reasons or as a last resort? Absolutely, but ultimately that is between them and God. Our role is not to judge, but to disciple in a way that compassionately meets them where they are and helps them to get where God wants them to be. Let’s be ready with open arms. Let’s be ready to show love. Let’s be ready to minister to needs and help people experience authentic life-change through faith in Jesus. -Jason

Psalm 45 is a great description of Jesus as our Warrior-King. Verses 3 & 4 say: Gird your sword on your side, you mighty one; clothe yourself with splendor and majesty. In your majesty ride forth victoriously in the cause of truth, humility and justice; let your right hand achieve awesome deeds.

Too often we only see God as our problem-solver or need-meeter, and then when the problem is solved or the need is met, we put God back on the shelf until the next crisis. God desires to be much more than that.

The picture of Christ as our Warrior-King lends itself to an ever-present force that is always doing battle in our behalf. We need to see Jesus in that way: Not simply as a “call me if you need me” helper, but a constant source of truth, strength, and protection. The chorus of a song that emerged from Psalm 45 says:

In Your majesty ride on victoriously Conquering enemies on every side In humility You came for all to see That You reign gloriously and now You ride Ride on!

Worship Well!

ANDY ATKINSONpastor of discipleship & families - [email protected]

LifeGROUPS exist to create a culture of hands-on practical, observable spiritual families in the everyday life of our community.

In today’s world it’s easy to feel that we are nothing more than an insignificant speck in the midst of a multitude. Our world tends to depersonalize us, seeking to make us like everyone else, but God loves us in specific ways that are particular to us. It is also the way fro His Bride, the Church to love people. The simple truth that God loves everyone is a mine that we can draw from on a daily basis. Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem to fulfill His assignment on the cross. The multitudes thronged around Him in such numbers that Zacchaeus could not see Jesus unless he climbed a tree. Zacchaeus would have been satisfied simply to catch a glimpse of the great Teacher. But Jesus stopped, turned, and looked directly at him! In that moment, Zacchaeus was oblivious to the crowd around him. Thus began a special time with Jesus that radically changed his life. Have you ever had a moment where you would be content with some small and the realize that you are in a much bigger moment? God loves us way more than we assume. I pray we catch glimpses of how great that distance is. Jesus will relate to you in ways that are unique to you. He knows your past; He knows what you will face in the future. Because He knows everything about you, His word to you will perfectly fit the circumstances of your life. You may be in a group of Christians who are listening to God’s Word, and you may hear things from Him that no one else hears. Don’t become frustrated with others if they are not as excited about a truth from God as you are. Don’t be impatient with them. God will personalize His word to you. He will relate to each of your friends in a way that specifically meets their needs as well.
