The PresbyterianChurch of Copacabana

The rst Protestants to arrive in Brazil were the Calvinists in the XVIth and XVIIth centuries during colonial disputes between Portugal, France and Holland. However, these adventures were primarily political. The Portuguese regained total control of their colony after they expelled the French and the Dutch (following a battle which occurred at the entrance to Guanabara Bay). It is important to recall that a Synod of the Reformed Church of Holland was created in Pernambuco in the XVIlth century, although the Protestant presence in Brazil effectively began only after the XIXth century.

As soon as he arrived in Brazil, in August of 1859, Reverend Asbel Green Simonton, who had been sent by the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America, as well as other Presbyterian missionaries who arrived after him, conducted public church services in order to convert Catholics to Protestantism, a mission that was primarily aimed at converting the poorer segments of the popuIation. Churches were created as well as schools and an evangelical press which produced abundant and easi ly understood religious literature. In 1862 Simonton established the rst Presbyterian Church ofBraziI in Rio de Janeiro.

In 1866, Pastor Simonton began to conduct "family services" in the homes of members of different communities and Copacabana (which comes from the Quéchua Indian term - Qopaq hawana - and means "the Blue Lookout Point") was one of the parts of the city where these services were conducted. In 1867, an ex-priest who was the rst Protestant minister ordained in Brazil, José Manoel da Conceição, conducted occasional services in the "suburb" of Copacabana. At that time, access to Copacabana was extremely difcult and usually the preacher arrived by means of a small boast across the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon. In the beginning of the XXth century access became easier when a tunnel opened conecting Botafogo to Copacabana.

However, it wasn't until 1909 that the Gospel began to be preached in Copacabana with regularly scheduled meet ings of the Presbyter ian community in a smalI house. Eventually, the Presbyterians were able to rent a larger house at 331 Barata Ribeiro Street. Two years later they purchased a pIot of land and constructed the rst sanctuary on the same street, at the number "335", The present tempIe was inaugurated on September 20, 1913. The very next day, the Rio de Janeiro Presbyterate consecrated the building as the Presbyterian Church of Copacabana, composed of 26 founding-members, and 6 elected ofcials whose rst Pastor was the Reverend Laudelino de Oliveira Lima.

In 1962, the Presbyterian Church of Copacabana inaugurated, at 69 Paula Freitas Street, the Christian Education Building, which is two stories tall. On the second oor the church maintains part of its administrative functions as well as a nursery which is open to children from 1 to 4 years old whose parents work in the neighborhood. The site also has a large ball room which ís used for meetings, community' festivities, young people activities as well as other church related activities such as lunchions, etc. Nearby, an evangelical stationary-bookstore is maintained which is called "Biblia e Companhia".

The spreading of the Gospel by the church has yielded fruit and new congregations have been formed with churches being estabIished in the districts of Ipanema, Gávea, Jardim Guanabara on Governor's Island, Vila Isabel, etc.

Today, the Presbyterian Church of Copacabana continues steadfastly dedicated to íts evangelical mission of expanding the Holy Ministry of the Word of God and the Reformed faith to other districts in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro.
