QUALITY IN BRASILThe Historic Evolution

• The Brazilian economy until half of last century was agriculture, through coffee, rubber, cotton and sugar

• It was after the first world war, that Brasil started its industrial cycle, where in 1921 Ford Company opened the first car factory, followed immediately by General Motors

• During the first years of the 50’s, were created the “Compania Siderurgica Nacional – CSN” and “Petroleo Brasileiro S.A-Petrobras”. In the same decade the Government consolidated the automobile industry in Brasil

•economy until half of last century was agriculture, through coffee, rubber, cotton and sugar.

• The aspect of mass production, typical of the automobile industry, promoted the first quality approach with the development and qualification of spare parts suppliers, having started with this the formation of a quality culture

•The risks to facilities, people and environment, linked to the oil industry, especially in the oil production in deep waters, were decisive to leverage the quality movement in Brasil

• In the beginning of the 90’s, with the economic opening promoted by the Brazilian Government, it was created as important public policy, the Brazilian Program of Quality and Productivity – PBQP, and the adoption of ISO 9001 being its main strategy

• The use of buying power by Petrobras had decisive contribution to promete the search of ISO 9001 certification in Brasil

• Without necessarily having certified its management systems, ISO 9001 is still the base for the Brazilian companies which seek to increase competitiveness of their products in a globalized economy

THE IMPORTANCE OF ISO 9001 TO INMETRO

• There are today in Brasil 345.000 models of certified products, involving 197 families of different products

• 90 % of which, holding more than 300.000, were certified using model 5, or else, evaluating the quality management systems of the companies based in the requirements of ISO 9001, together with products tests

• Researches carried out in Brasil by specialized institutes demonstrated that the credibility of certification in the country is very high

• The economic dimension is the one that has the capacity to mobilize resources

• Enhance the quality perspective as management strategy of the organizations

• Reduce the excessive formalism of quality management systems

• Idea strength: creating value for organizations not only in economic terms but also in social and environmental

• The synergy innovation-quality is that has higher potential for value creation

• The technological dimension of quality has to be retaken. This will do the link with technological innovation
