lacaniana, a fonoaudiologia e a educação.
recuperação e inserção do aluno no campo profissional.
A segunda vertente irá solidificar a
A base teórica

Literacy and its avatars: the included excluded Synthesis of the proposal
It appears that, despite all the government and non-governmental initiatives to tackle the
difficulties of learning how to read and write, the illiteracy rate is still challenging. This project
aims to research-intervention to deal with this problem, sustained over three fields of
knowledge: Lacanian psychoanalysis, speech language pathology and education. To this end it is
proposed to operate in the promotion, prevention, recovery and introduction of students in the
professional field. One strand will intervene directly in the school: a) through the creation of
meetings spaces with teachers to offer them an opportunity of elaboration and facing problems
related to literacy process; b) in a specific job with the students. The second part will solidify the
integration education / health so that the relationship of the school with the network of public
health services to be effective. The third part will act together with the CEI’s for the promotion
of child development with respect to speech and writing and, on the fourth side, to reach those
who do not finalize the schooling, encouraging the creation of vocational training for that
particular group through actions with the Technical Schools and SENAI. The theoretical base
comes from the concepts of subject, listening and interpretation arising from Lacanian
psychoanalysis and shared by speech language pathology and education. The method of
conversation and dialogical method will be adopted as our instruments. The results will be
evaluated by questionnaires to education’s professionals, by the impact on the training work of
teachers working in public education networks and the periodic assessments of the students
made by the school through the diagnostic survey. It is expected to reach 10 schools, directly at
each pole of the research, and indirectly, about 800 to 1,000 students and their teachers in 4
years.

motora, transtorno do espectro autista (TEA), transtorno do déficit de atenção/hiperatividade
(TDAH)).
fala bem.

Muitos autores (GOULART; CHIARI, 2006; GOULART; CHIARI, 2012; CRESTANI; MORAES;

Cabe a ele e
Assim, a Fonoaudiologia e a
construção do conhecimento, a Fonoaudiologia, a Psicologia e a Educação serão aliadas

municipais e estaduais.
A REDE

ENUNCIADO DO PROBLEMA

A segunda vertente será refazer/reforçar/reafirmar/solidificar a integração
(Saint-Georges et al. , 2013; Taylor et al. , 2014; Baron-Cohen et al., 2000; Yamada et al. 2012;
e choro (Taylor; Vehorn; Noble; Weitlauf; Warren; 2014) no grupo, posteriormente
países, inclusive do Brasil.

No entanto,

“Statistical Package for the Social Science” SPSS 22.0 para Windows.
o projeto. Outros projetos semelhantes (SANTIAGO; ASSIS, 2015; MIRANDA, 2011; SANTIAGO;
MIRANDA, 2006) inspiram parte deste projeto e sustentam a sua viabilidade.

a) BASE TEÓRICA
O modelo para organização dos sintomas em Fonoaudiologia (GOUVÊA; FREIRE;

discorreremos (veja fluxograma anexo) a seguir.
b.1) PROCEDIMENTOS

no qual iremos iniciar o projeto.

A partir desse levantamento, nova triagem será feita (2a. triagem).

APD, CAPS, CER, NASF, NIR, NISA, UBS/PSF.

sujeito e do significante.

Daí haver a interpretação
Principalmente, a interpretação coloca o outro no campo da dúvida, da incerteza,
afastando-o do imaginário especular, narcisista.

Beatriz Udenio, Eric Laurent, Philippe Lacadée e outros.

Segundo as autoras, o
práticas pedagógicas no espaço escolar.

concordar com a nomeação dada pelo Outro – problematização” (MIRANDA; VASCONCELLOS;
SANTIAGO, 2006).
significantes e novas combinações destes apareciam e afetavam a posição do professor frente

4. Difusão do conhecimento

b. Proposal summary
Despite all governmental and non-governmental initiatives to address the difficulties of
learning to read and write, the fact is that the low literacy rate is a challenge.
The objective of this project is research/intervention to address this problem, based on
three fields of knowledge: Lacanian psychoanalysis, speech and language therapy, and
education.
With this in view, we are proposing actions in the promotion, prevention, recovery, and
insertion of the student into a profession. One component will intervene directly in the school:
a) creating venues for meetings with teachers to offer them an opportunity to confront and
elaborate problems related to the literacy process; b) working specifically with the students.
The second component will solidify the education/health integration so that the relationship
between the school and the public health service network is efficient.
The third component will work with CEIs (Child/Infant Education Centers) to promote
children's development in speech and writing, and the fourth component is to encourage the

order to reach those who will not finish their schooling.
The theoretical basis comes from the conceptions of subject, listening, and interpretation of
Lacanian psychoanalysis, shared by phonoaudiology and education.
Conversation and Dialogic methods will be the adopted instruments.
Results will be evaluated by questionnaires applied to education professionals, by the
impact of the training of teachers working in public school districts, and by the school’s periodic
evaluations of students through a diagnostic survey.
We expect to reach ten schools, working directly in each research center, and indirectly,
about 800 to 1,000 students and their teachers, in four years.
Key words: literacy, educational inclusion, teaching, learning.
c) Research project
INTRODUCTION
The term AVATARS uses part of the title of a research project developed with funding
from CAPES Education Observatory, from 2010 to 2014 - "Literacy and its Avatars" - which is the
support base for this project. In that project we were motivated by the high number of
complaints of learning difficulties on the one hand, and on the other, by the lack of agreement
in the literature as to their causes. We were also prompted by the finding that the symptoms
presented by the children treated in the speech and language and/or psychoanalytic clinics
seem to indicate that they do not have organic or psychological disorders that justify their
demands. We became interested in developing this research so as to face the challenges of
literacy and its consequences in the formation of the writing subject.
As an outcome of this general objective, we set out to construct clinical risk indicators for
learning disabilities in order to act both in prevention and in speech and language therapy and
to understand the challenges that the child presents to the literacy teacher who structures their
formal initiation into writing. Several research papers, both in academic master's degree as well

as in scientific initiation, have addressed the literacy issue from several different angles:
teacher's discourse, indicators for health promotion in speech and language field and, as a
result, the prevention of possible difficulties related to speech and writing, state of the art
literacy processes, to education in support classrooms, and to analysis and discussion of the Ler
e Escrever (Read and Write) Program.
The EXCLUDED referred to in the title of the current research proposal refer to those who
do not become literate, for unknown reasons, since too many explanations end up being no
explanation at all. But we can at least say that it is possible to delineate the population that fits
this label. There is a peculiarity common to all: these excluded are included. That is, they are not
out of school, because they attend regular or support classrooms, but they increase the PNAD
(National Household Sample Survey) statistics or lower the PISA (International Student
Assessment Program) indexes. It is sufficient to say that 8.5% of the population aged 15 years or
more is not literate or that Brazil is ranked 55th in reading, 58th in math, and 59th in science.
If the excluded from our title have some responsibility for this or not, is not the issue we
want to address. We want to focus on dealing with exclusion, regardless of whether or not it has
to do with the statistics and indexes pointed out. Our experience13 seems to indicate that it is.
We could define excluded as those who are likely to attend a "special" classroom because
they have been diagnosed with some kind of disability (intellectual, auditory, visual, motor, ASD,
or ADHD).
Not only these, but also those in a regular classroom who, despite the efforts of transferring
them to a special room, were not transferred because they did not have the "abnormalities"
described above. Instead, they presented difficulties in reading and writing (dyslexia,
dyscalculia, dysgraphia), speech problems or late speech, stuttering, and inability to write or
read ... Despite this wide range of categories, we are interested in those who present

complaints related to difficulties in literacy, regardless of medical, psychological or pedagogical
classifications.
Labels aside, we know that speaking well, although not a prerequisite for literacy is a sign
that the symbolic system is operational and that its representation by letters will be inevitable.
Thus, talking, reading, and writing, go hand in hand. In the accompaniment of children, basic
health care has observed that some of them do not speak well.
Several authors (Goulart and Chiari, 2006; Goulart and Chiari, 2012; Crestani, Moraes, and
Souza, 2015; Verly and Freire, 2015) highlight the importance of developing and validating tools
for screening and tracking speech problems in small children, when warning signs can already
be recognized.
Health and risk indicators are a part of health epidemiology, which differs from clinical
practice, because it focuses on protecting the community from health risks and not on the
rehabilitation of the individual in his specificity (Andrade; Soares, 2001).
Assuming that the one who inserts the child in the function of writing is the adult
reader/scribe, we can plan actions in society involving family, school, and the community in
general that will offer more and greater possibilities for the child to engage in writing. However,
it is impossible to totally avoid difficulties in this area.
Under such conditions, health promotion is a term that can help us construct the intended
purpose of risk indicators for the constitution of the reader/scribe.
Reis and Freire (2014), and Evangelista and Freire (2015), recognized the importance of
having discussions on the subject of health and risk indicators in speech and language therapy,
especially in the field of human communications, seeking to contribute to public health.
Starting from four theoretic axes14, their work proposed a group of phenomenic signs that were
considered preliminary indicators for the acquisition of oral and written language.
14

As a follow-up, the authors proposed the use of these indicators in the promotion of
writing and speech, and suggested that they should be tested and validated. The works of
Venetian (2015) and Diogenes (2015) validated these indicators working with health
professionals and teachers. The proposed instruments are of easy application, quick completion,
and low cost – which would classify them as basic health promotion tools in these fields.
However, these actions should not be confined to the basic healthcare15 of the child and
the monitoring or surveillance done by the school or by healthcare facilities. The teacher, the
one who often is the first to recognize and identify difficulties in the child’s speech, reading, and
writing, should be the focus of training actions that seek to promote health in childhood. This
should be done with the proper theoretical and practical backing in the learning environment,
which we will specifically propose.
We should emphasize that the relationship between health and school is essential. First, it
is necessary to dialog with the teachers and help them to understand that to have a student in
treatment at a healthcare facility is to have an ally in the healthcare professional, but also a
child (student) who is suffering. Next, we should avoid the trap of accepting an individual report
of the student’s progress which many times is just a teacher’s attempt to justify giving up on
teaching the student. The family uses the school’s decision to obtain some kind of benefit. In
this process all those involved try to shun their responsibilities. It is important to maintain this
partnership and be available when the teacher requests your presence. Listen to the teacher,
make him listen to himself and establish another kind of discursive circularity.
It is imperative to move away from the temptation of unproductive diagnosis, that is, those
based on what the child does not have, is incapable of, does not accomplish, does not
understand, does not read, does not write, and does not learn, using incapability to justify

frustrations. The therapist should talk to the teacher about the speaker and the scribe in the
child and, therefore, point out their presence in what the child says and does. Most importantly,
listen to what the child does not say, by paying attention to the details (paraphrasing what
Einstein says about God). Develop in teachers an active listening (Hoyuelos, 2004), that goes
beyond simple observation, and identifying in children their everyday curiosities and difficulties.
Two work proposals will be presented in the methodology to address this scenario.
The teacher should be given back his/her role of alphabetizing. It is up to the teacher, and
only the teacher, the task of teaching the student to read and write. No one will do it better
than the teacher. The student-teacher relationship should be strong and based on the trust that
parents have in the teacher of being able to teach their children. A good healthcare professional
(speech therapist or psychologist, among others) knows that his/her place is not in the school
and that the referral does not require him/her to alphabetize the child, but rather to address
the issue that prevents the child from being alphabetized by the teacher. It is our place to stand
next to the teacher in this task, not ahead or behind.
It is necessary to reaffirm our commitment to the teacher. Research, studies, surveys,
descriptions, discussions, and projects are essential for the expansion and deepening of the
knowledge about the children (who are there as students), the school and its gridlocks. The
responsibility for alphabetizing belongs to the school and it must have the desire to fulfill its task
satisfactorily. Therefore, it is important to dialogue directly with the school. Promoting the
listening of the teachers who come to us and of the children referred for clinical care will
provide opportunities for dialogue between the healthcare, teacher, parents, and the school.
Therefore, speech and language therapy and psychology are called to contribute to the daily
situations that arise in school.
As an indispensable part of society, education could not isolate itself in its field, aiming for
the quality laid out in the Diretrizes Curriculares Nacionais (National Curricular Guidelines,
BRAZIL, 2013). Interaction between education and other segments of society, especially

healthcare, can benefit from a new look at old perspectives that have caused (and still cause)
the failure of children in the area of teaching/learning reading and writing in our country.
With the advancement of research concerning epistemology and the position of the
subject in the construction of knowledge, speech and language therapy, psychology, and
education will be important allies for the change of this educational scenario present in the
municipal and state public school systems.
THE NETWORK
When it comes to education, it is a known fact that there are others who are part of the
student’s environment and on whom, directly or indirectly, depends the success of
alphabetization. We turn first and foremost to the teacher, because the proposed methodology
postulates that one should talk with the teacher about the child/student, and also with the
child/student. But there is also the coordinator and principal of the school, the teaching staff,
social services, the child's family, and other education professionals, such as members of
CEFAI16 (Center for Training and Follow-up for Inclusion) and NAAPA17 (Support and Monitoring
Nucleus for Learning). They often encounter children/students who act differently from others
because they are special in some way.
The network also includes healthcare professionals such as Community Health Agents.
They can alert us to signs or indicators of something different in the development of the visited
child, even at a few months old, prior to attending a daycare (CEI), when much can be done
using a health promotion policy. While still in pre-school the attentive look of the teacher and of
EMEI members are essential so that health promotion during the development of the future

student takes place. Of course, we also need the network to incorporate in special way the
family’s physicians and nurses, neurologists, psychiatrists, and pediatricians, as well as other
health professionals such as psychologists, speech therapists, physiotherapists, and
occupational therapists in order to support the special needs of students in need of inclusion. In
the healthcare we can also rely on the CERs (centers specialized in rehabilitation), the NIRs
(integrated rehabilitation centers), the NISAs (integrated centers of audiological health), and the
CAPS (Psychosocial Care Centers).
All children have the right to learn, but the educational system must allow the student
with difficulties to get involved in an activity for which he/she has an inclination or ability. This
has a direct influence on the educational philosophy and teaching methods used in schools.
Technical schools need to urgently present an intermediate level that would work to meet the
needs of the so-called students with special needs. This would lead to true inclusion of the
subject as an autonomous and responsible citizen.
After this brief overview of the theme of this research/intervention, we will make a
proposal for needed actions involving the fields of education, healthcare, training,
rehabilitation, promotion, prevention, and therapy. Here is what we propose as groundbreaking
in relation to what has already been done in this segment: a) treat this issue from the beginning
to the end, that is, act in the modification of the current situation of school difficulties, from
early childhood (from four months to five years) until the student's professionalization (in high
school); b) implement a methodology that, while acting on those involved, will also train them
so that they will continue to face the impasses of schooling in the absence of the training team;
c) strengthen the healthcare and educational network so that it will be operative, effective, and
committed to the modification of the educational environment regarding the problems with
alphabetization and its consequences in the development of a citizen.

The purpose of this research is to act in three different locations in the country, in four
components of the educational system, to bring about changes in the situation of the schools
involved in the project as it regards the difficulties of reading and writing. This will be done
through the intervention of an interdisciplinary team composed of specialists from the fields of
speech and language therapy, psychology, and pedagogy, as they interact with the school.
The first component will be to intervene directly in the school using two strategies: a)
creating venues for meetings with teachers, offering them an opportunity to confront the
problems and find solutions related to the alphabetization process; b) working specifically with
the children/students.
The second component will be to recreate, reinforce, and/or solidify the integration of
education and healthcare so that the liaison between the school and the network of public
health services will be efficient. To accomplish this, these professionals will be invited to
participate in conversational meetings (dialogic method) in the health facilities, with the
intention of offering them a venue to conceive and organize a system for tracking the
information concerning the educational needs of students in the schools that are participating
in the project.
The third component will be to work in conjunction with CEIs and EMEIs for the
promotion, prevention, and recuperation of child development as it concerns speech and
writing.
Communicative performance in the first year of infancy has been extensively studied
(Saint-Georges et al. , 2013; Taylor et al. , 2014; Baron-Cohen et al., 2000; Yamada et al. 2012;
Nichols, Ibañez, Foss-Feig, Stone, 2014), with results that include different patterns of social
smile (Wass et al,2015.), visual attention (Patten et al., 2014), babbling (Chericoni et al, 2016),
motor skills (Elison, Wolff, Reznick, et al.2014; Koterba, Leezenbaum, Iverson, 2014), and crying
(Taylor, Vehorn, Noble, Weitlauf, Warren, 2014) in the group, later diagnosed as pathology.

The PREAUT Project, which gave origin to the protocol used in the evaluation of the
children in this study, was started in France, in 1998, and currently has the participation of
several countries, including Brazil. Through dissemination of information concerning the
warning signs for autism, this project’s goal is to guide and train healthcare teams, leading to
early interventions with a reduction of the age of the first consultations.
PREAUT Project (Crespin, Parlato-Oliveira, 2015) was initiated with the hypothesis that it
would be possible to change the psychic constitution of a child who was becoming autistic, if the
intervention were initiated very early, before the child’s first birthday. The difficulty in testing
such a hypothesis was primarily due to the fact that diagnosis for autism is usually made when
the child is around three-years-old, which would make the identification of children in need of
such an intervention impossible. However, using a large archive of home videos of children in
daily situations, later diagnosed as autistic, it was possible to observe their characteristic
behavior during their first year.
The search for PREAUT signs, obtained while applying the test by the same name, may
reveal difficulties of communication and predict some serious developmental disorders.
Therefore, according to Laznik, "in the baby with autistic development there would be NO
emergence of the ability to initiate exchanges (with the other family member) in a playful and
cheerful way." The warning sign appears when the baby does not seek to raise the eyes for
pleasure (Crespin, Parlato-Oliveira, 2015).
It is thought that there is a lack of initiative in these children to instigate and share actions with
the Other.
The fourth component is to encourage the creation of workshops within the school or
vocational teaching through technical schools and the National Service for Industrial
Training (SENAI) to reach this particular group that will have difficulties to finish their schooling
or even dropout.

EXPECTED RESULTS
The results obtained by the research/intervention will be analyzed and monitored by
administering questionnaires (before and after the intervention) to be completed by all
professionals participating in the research. This will include teachers, administrators,
coordinators, and members of the healthcare and educational institutions. These questionnaires
will be elaborated from an initial conversation with teachers concerning the problems they face
in alphabetization. From this first conversation in which open-ended questions will be used, a
questionnaire will be elaborated with closed questions, to be statistically analyzed, and with
open-ended questions to be analyzed qualitatively (Gunther, H. 2003). The questionnaire items
will deal with the research theme and its developments. They will also raise objective data
about teachers, their training, teaching experience, subject matter they teach, types of students
they encounter, difficulties they find, complaints, and requests. Quantitative data will be placed
in an Excel spreadsheet and analyzed by the "Statistical Package for the Social Science" program
SPSS 22.0 for Windows. The participating researcher of that specific field will address more
specific data.
With the children we will use the periodic evaluations done by the school, through
diagnostic surveys, as a means of measuring results.
The plan is to reach eight to ten schools at each research location over a period of four
years, which will involve indirectly approximately 800 to 1,000 students and their teachers, with
approximately 200 students in each region involved in the study. Both actions planned for the
research will be developed in the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, and Rio Grande do Sul,
beginning in the capital cities.
SCIENTIFIC CHALLENGES AND THE MEANS TO OVERCOME THEM
Considering that the project makes use of traditional oral methods, we do not foresee any
technological challenges and the scientific challenges should not need special means to
overcome them. The substitution of one school for another might be necessary in cases where

the invited institution does not wish to participate or withdraws its involvement in the project.
Other similar projects (Santiago and Assis, 2015; Miranda, 2011; Santiago and Miranda, 2006)

a) THEORETICAL BASIS
In Speech and Language Therapy
The current proposal, as it relates to speech and language therapy, is theoretically based
on the conception of subject, language, and clinical practice of psychoanalytic inspiration. This
kind of speech and language therapy proposes to see the symptoms (in writing or speech) as
signs of the presence of a subject, rejecting the ready-made diagnosis based on the child’s
production and that see the errors or failures as indicative of disease or deficit. The subject, for
the speech and language therapy adopted here, is a divided one: divided by speech and
language, by speech and listening, by metaphorical and metonymic processes, and by the
functioning of language. It is a subject that sees itself in the effects generated on his interlocutor
by his speech/writing. It should be emphasized that in the acquisition of writing, the subject at
hand is the same one of the oral language acquisition: errors, misunderstandings, mistakes, and
forgetfulness are always indicative of the subject's capture by writing.
The model for the organization of symptoms in speech and language therapy (Gouvêa,
Freire, and Dunker, 2011) is the support basis for the dialogical method, which is based on the
differential perspective that the speech therapist takes when presented with the symptom,
recognized as the metaprocedure which we call sanction. The ability to differentially recognize
irregularity or language failure implies the tacit or explicit adoption of a language theory. The
basis of the speech and language therapeutic action is to sanction the heterogeneities of
language in a pluriunivocal way, that is, in a single act of sanction, multiple incidences take
place: in speech, language, and writing; in the subject, in the Other, and in the intersubjective
relation to sanction is, at the same time, validating or vetoing an act and recognizing or ignoring
a subject. Whether by affirmative gesture, whether by a negative inference, by silence or

interrogativity, a plurality of effects ascertained from the same act. If the speech and language
intervention based on the generic form of the sanction carries out different modalizations of the
symptom and if the language symptoms are responsive to such a linguistic procedure it is
because they can be re-described in covariant and homogeneous terms to the sanction.
Furthermore, if speech and language pathology symptoms are reversible by language
operations (such as those involved in sanctioning), it is because, necessarily, they have a
language structure.
To translate, transcribe, and transliterate, are different forms of validation or of
recognition of an action of speech or a discursive production that take into consideration, in
different ways, the authorship function, the subject effect, or the enunciation position. They
are different forms of sanctioning a language symptom or of registering it as such. We affirm
that language symptoms belong to a complex structure of successive and superimposed strata
and inter-strata that operate by contradiction, opposition, and difference, forming a type of
topological grid schematically divided on the horizontal axes – writing, language, and speech –
in relation to the vertical axes – subject, Other, metaphor, and metonymy.
We may notice that the language symptoms, although predominantly emerging from
one axis over the others, cause disharmony in all the system. This disharmony is characteristic of
the ordinary functioning of language. The symptoms of language are only exaggerations or
restrictions of this process.
On the other hand, we affirm that an action on one axis causes transformations on the
other axes. The general principle of the clinical action between strata can be seen in a clinical
situation where a pre-teen with stuttering has the rhythm of his speech changed when the
speech therapist asks him to read a passage from a book, following his finger that underlines
the text at a slower pace. His speech changes with the effect of this action of listening to the
other and listening to himself from another position. Not only his speech changed, but his body
posture was also transformed, previously defined by a hunched upper body and eyes cast down.

In Psychoanalysis
Considering applied psychoanalysis as a form of intervention, it is important that the
psychoanalyst be able to demonstrate the effectiveness of his clinical practice in the institutions
where he works. The school, object of our research, has an educational function, which should
be respected by the psychoanalysis (Lima, Araujo, and Souza, 2015). Recognizing the distinction
between these two fields (psychoanalysis and education), the question becomes, “How can the
psychoanalyst contribute to the training of those involved in the teaching/learning process?”
The clinical intervention guided by psychoanalysis differs from other psychological
practices due to its conception of subject. According to Freud, the educational act consists of
the transmission of formal knowledge, along with another modality of transmission that
escapes conscious control. This later modality of transmission is beyond the field of universal
knowledge, and impossible to be sure of.
Therefore, the concept of the unconscious becomes fundamental, since it interferes in the
learning process. It is a type of knowledge that escapes the subject at the same time that
constitutes it. This is the reason why a certain content proposed by the teacher affects the
subject in a particular way, causing unpredictable effects and perceptions. According to Ferreira
(1998, p. 144), “(…) The effect produced by the one who teaches escapes him, since there is a
knowledge of which the subject knows nothing and, although unknown and strange to the
subject, can sustain the desire both to know and to teach."
The specificity of psychoanalysis is therefore to locate what is unique in the subject behind
the identifiable offers suggested by culture and scientific discourse. These offerings lead to the
alienation of the subject and reduce his difficulty to a deficit, which ultimately results in his
segregation and social exclusion. Psychoanalysis does not operate with a classification or
standardization of disorders. It focuses on the subjective dimension of the learning difficulty,
allowing the subject not to be treated as an object. In conclusion, its focus is not the disorder or
the deficit, but the subject in his uniqueness.

Under this pillar, the psychoanalytic guidance in the school environment is made possible
by offering opportunities to speak that are open for administrators, teachers, parents and
students. Language, through the use of the word, can make room to "unlocking the
identifications" (Miranda, 2011). In other words, the sliding of signifiers opens up new
perspectives of interpretation of a situation, discarding the identifications that generate
impotence and producing new outlets.
In Education
Especially in education, we value a more dynamic and open perspective on the
construction of knowledge and the teaching/learning process, seeking to break with the adult-
centric perspective of controlling the structuring of student’s/children's knowledge at the same
pace. As a theoretical support, education is incorporated into the project through the pedagogy
of the school or daycare and of the child, constructing a proposal for a training action, both
theoretical and practical, permeated by theorists who move from the sociology and philosophy
of childhood (Sarmento, 2009; Kohan, 2009) to the pedagogy of the Italian daycare (Malaguzzi,
1999; Fortunati, 2014; among others) as the initial focus of discussion.
Among some of the presuppositions of the research, we believe in the promotion and
encouragement of dialogue based on an education that situates its epistemological,
methodological, political, practical and ethical conceptions (Gauthier et al., 2013) permeated by
the promotion of quality, regardless of the difficulties presented by the children/students.
Mainly because:
“The benefit generated by the interaction between diversity requires a withdrawal from an obsolete vocabulary which consists of definitions built around the equivalence between diversity and disability and, on the other hand, adopting the use of more appropriate terms to emphasize the intrinsic value of diversity and encourage the maturation of new attitudes and practices.” (Parrini, 2014, p.79).
It is in this sense that we anticipate the value of a joint effort between fields that will

invest in teacher training combined with the centrality of the child in the processes of
construction of knowledge in its entirety, as well as inserting family members in the
construction of inclusion and understanding of the potential of the children in these school
environments. We also believe it will promote "a multidimensional approach, attentive to the
potential of the subject [...] strengthening the individual differences that characterize the
processes of experience of each one, thus overcoming the concept of normality" (Parrini, 2014,
p. 80) which still penetrates educational institutions today.
b) METHODOLOGY
This is a research/intervention that will be carried out by a multidisciplinary team
composed of speech therapists, psychologists, and pedagogues who will at times work as a
team, and other times separately, focused specifically on their area of training, as will be
discussed below (see attached flow chart).
b.1) PROCEDURES
Initially, we will survey the three different locations in which the research will be
conducted: the capital cities of the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, and Rio Grande do Sul. In
this phase we will define the territory where we will operate, according to the possible schools
that will participate in the intervention. At the same time, we will focus on the choice and
training of team members to bring unity and homogeneity of actions.
From the location survey, three work fronts will be simultaneously opened. It should be
noted that these will be surrounded by three stages: 1st) initial planning stage of activities,
creation of a schedule for specific actions, formation of teams, planning and distribution of
responsibilities for each team, making adjustments according to local circumstances, selection
of schools and verification of the inter-sectoral network (healthcare and education) near the
area where the schools are located, contact with DRE/DIR and SMED/SM and 8th CRE to
establish the partnership, and preparation of the researchers for their participation in the

research/intervention ; 2nd) execution of planned activities in each of the fronts mentioned; 3rd)
constant and systematic evaluation for correction of course and adjustment of strategies18.
1st Front
The first front will focus on working with administrators, teachers, parents and students of
the target schools.
Having surveyed the research territory, we will extend a formal invitation to two schools
to participate. These schools will serve as hubs for the activities. Preferably, one of them would
be a state school and the other a municipal one.
The choice of schools must comply with the following criteria: a) have a resource room,
SAAI - Sala de Apoio e Acompanhamento à Inclusão (Support and Inclusion Follow-up Room),
functioning during different hours from the regular classes; b) located near healthcare and
educational facilities, in addition to having CEI and EMEI in the area. In order to be chosen, a
request from the school for the proposed intervention is of paramount importance.
We suggest that initially (as an example) in São Paulo, the schools of the regional board of
education center/Sé/Ipiranga be chosen, since PUC-SP already works in the region with
productive partnerships in the fields of education and healthcare.
There are thirty-two child education schools, fifteen child education centers, two joint
educational centers with child education center, thirty-five public municipal primary schools,
and forty-two public state primary schools in the central/Sé/Ipiranga region, totaling almost
70,000 students. Estimating that our research/intervention will spend 2 months in each school,
that the first four months be used for the contacts and planning of actions, and eliminating the
period of school vacation, we will have reached a total of approximately ten schools by our
research/intervention team, in a four-year period.
18 This evaluation will be done at the end of the research in each school, with the researchers involved, using
the conversational method, coordinated by the researcher responsible for the activity. To this evaluation, data
from the questionnaires applied before and after the intervention, will be added.

Once this survey has been carried out and the locations have been defined, it will be
necessary to make contact with the board of education where the schools are located, request
authorization for the work, and sign the informed consent form.
In the State of Rio Grande do Sul, we have the Ipê Amarelo Child Education School, of the
Federal University of Santa Maria, where we have already carried out support work with
teachers, and assistance to parents and students in the interdisciplinary nucleus of detection
and early intervention (NIDIP – Núcleo Interdisciplinar de Detecção e Intervenção Precoce) as a
place in which to start the project. This school serves about 100 children, from four months to
five years and eleven months. In addition to the school, we hope to count on the units of family
health strategies of Vila Santos and Vila Maringá, neighborhoods in which we have an ongoing
multiprofessional residence program and graduate level health courses in which we can do
integrated work in the process of detection and early intervention. The team in Santa Maria
intends to focus their work more on early intervention in the EMEI and on the childcare of the
basic health units. It should be noted that these units have an average of approximately 100
babies born each year, that is, at least 200 families reached per year.
1.1) Listening of teachers' complaints and testimonies (1st Screening)
In each of the chosen schools, one at a time, meetings will be held with the elementary
school teachers to survey children with learning disabilities, regardless of the causes (organic,
psychological, physical, mental, or other). This survey will be done by speech therapists in two
meetings and will hear the teacher’s complaints, analyze and interpret the students' writing,
and discuss the results of their analysis with these teachers. In this phase the dialogic method
(item b1) will be used. At the end, the cases will be divided into three groups. First group,
children who have writing "errors" re-signified19 as signs or indications of the literacy process.
19 The so-called “errors” may have the same graphical presentation. What differentiates them as marks of
the presence of subject and symptom is the systematization of occurrence accompanied by the student’s anguish,
reported by the teacher.

This group will be "reabsorbed" by the teachers who will work with the children in the
classroom using the resources from their training20. A second group will be formed by cases
where more specific monitoring is necessary. These will be sent for participation in the reading
and writing workshops in the network. The third group will consist of children who do not fit
into the first or the second group. These will be sent for the continuity of the process to be
carried out by the psychologists21.
In summary, elementary students that present learning disabilities recognized by speech
therapists as not being a part of the literacy process will compose this third group, being the
focus of psychologists working in the school.
At school the work of the psychologists will take place in two spheres: 1) a team devoted
to the training of a group of teachers through the conversation method, and 2) a case by case
basis, seeking to address the symptoms of each child starting with their subjective impasses. In
this case, it will be used the clinical interview method, with the objective of focusing on
children who, in spite of being included in the school system, find themselves excluded from the
opportunity of learning due to difficulties in corresponding to educational expectations. In this
later sphere of work, the initial objective is to survey the complaints made about children who,
although included in the current school system, are excluded from the possibility of learning
due to difficulties in responding to educational expectations.
1.2) Conversation with teachers
The conversation with teachers will have as its central theme the difficulties encountered
in their teaching practice. This methodology constitutes a modality of intervention. Each person
has their turn to speak in the group and this enables knowledge from the teaching experience to
20 This step should be one of the ways that will lead to the empowerment of the teacher, understood as the
competency and authority to: influence the thinking of others (power over); have access to resources and assets
(power to); make decisions and choices (power to); resist the power of others if necessary (power of). (Pinto, 2001,

be shared, reviewed, adjusted and, above all, reappropriated. When this happens, we are
witnessing the production of new knowledge, precisely what psychoanalytic orientated
research/intervention hopes to promote (Santiago and Assis, 2015).
The number of meetings with teachers will be established in advance, according to the
school calendar and the number of participants. Each subject is invited to participate in the
conversations. Besides being individual, the decision to accept it or not is motivated by the
desire to speak (Santiago, Miranda, and Vasconcelos, 2006).
1.3) Clinical Interviews22
Considering the third group of students, we will collect detailed data on each of them. In
this phase we will collect data from school documents, such as: enrollment form, pedagogical
reports, diagnostic results, and reports of treatments undergone, among others. In addition, we
will pay attention to the report of school principals, pedagogical coordinators, and teachers,
concerning symptoms presented at school, trying to isolate from the discourse produced in this
process, names that summarize the enigma that each child in question represents.
From this survey, a new screening will be done (2nd screening). Some cases will be referred
to the network, while others who seem to be an "enigma" in the school environment will be the
focus of clinical interviews at the school. These are cases that do not present reports or medical
diagnoses explaining their difficulties.
It is up to the psychologist to call the parents, if necessary. They may be called in
separately for an interview. In addition, at any time during the meetings (three at most), it is
possible that a referral be given for pedagogical reinforcement23, which occurs when the child
shows a desire to learn. It is not mandatory and its indication and duration will depend on each
case.

It will occur simultaneously in the groups of education and of health. For education it will
be directed to the CEIS, EMEIS, CEFAI and NAAPA; in healthcare, to the following health care
centers: APD, CAPS, CER, NASF, NIR, NISA, UBS/PSF. In this segment the training will be directed
to the construction of theoretical and practical knowledge about the promotion and the
situations raised, as well as for the recognition of indicators of child development and the
constitution of the speaker and of the scribe. We need to remember that, since these care
centers will be in the same area as the school, we will bring to the center of the discussions the
included-excluded children because, although they are in school, their inclusion process is
fragmented and not very effective.
This front will start with the dialogical method for meetings with the care centers teams.
The purpose of these meetings is to work with the promotion providing a listening environment
for members, and, in the conversations, to identify children who might be potential candidates
for future school learning problems. This makes it possible for teachers to make more adequate
and earlier referrals so that they can be carried out in a timely manner, and, simultaneously, the
monitors themselves can acquire knowledge to detect other cases. Knowledge about risk
indicators for the constitution of the speaker and of the scribe will be shared and, given that we
will be part of a network, cases of suspected deficiencies will be referred to and received by the
facilities that have already been mentioned.
3rd Front
It will focus on the contact with technical schools and SENAI for the establishment of
partnerships based on the survey of the schools’ willingness to open themselves up to the
professionalization of the students with special educational needs. From this front, partnerships
would be established to provide opportunities for vocational training prepared to guide and
train special students and include them in the professional workforce, which so far does not
exist. The existing system is not set up to prepare vocationally those with special educational

needs. With the team's expertise, in meetings with the board and teaching staff, we will be able
to assist in directing vocational courses adapted to the needs of special students, that would
lead them to inclusion in the job market.
b.2) METHODS
b.2.1) Dialogical Method
The so-called dialogical method refers to the encounter of interlocutors and to the
reaction that the speech of one of them can have on the other in reciprocal and reversible
cycles. It could be referred to as the method of speaking and listening since in this method they
are seen as articulated and inalienable – one cannot dialogue without the other. This method,
or instrument, was inspired by psychoanalysis, but is differentiated by the fact that it listens to
the speaking subject, to the words that are manifested in his speech, in the metonymic axis of
speech. In this method, while listening to the speech in a “deaf” manner (that is, without giving
it meaning), the speech therapist, without understanding, questions the speaker, be it by
interrogation, by rephrasing what was said, or by repeating, creating an effect on the other who
is listening. For Spina de Carvalho (2003), the interpretation can occur as oddness,
complementing what was said, a request to repeat, silence, correction, or many other forms.
What is important is that the interpretation should occur, in spite of a clinical act that might
affect the patient’s speech and/or his reaction to it. What the speech therapist says should
reaffirm the position of the other as a speaker and as the subject of his speech – it is up to the
speech therapist to recognize the subject and the signifier. After all, it is up to the therapist to
make non-meaning out of meaning, and meaning out of non-meaning. This clinical practice
distances itself from mere description and observation to engage in listening and interpretation
of the other in what he says about himself, what others say about him (school, family), and to
the interweaving of speech around the patient that defines the limits of the network that
receives him. If the speech therapist moves away from the position of master of his speech to
one of receptor of the message that is being transmitted by the other’s speech, the therapist

can listen, interpret, and can dislocate the subject and his speech upon himself and what is
asked of him. In summary, listening can take word in their broad sense. Thus the need for
interpretation as an action that modifies, dislocates, shudders, undoes, and redoes.
Mainly, interpretation puts the other in a position of doubt, distancing him from the
speculative and narcissistic imaginary. The effect could lead to a change of subjective position
and indicates alienation of the person who listens to the person who speaks, indicates the
intertwining of the speeches, indicates that what we desire with our speech as we address it to
the teacher, the administrator, or the healthcare professional, is that the interlocutors doubt
what is being said and question their uncertainties. But listening also has to do with body
language (gestures, facial expressions, repetitions), traits that go beyond the specific linguistic
marks and stress the body and the suprassegmental (intonation, intensity, volume, etc.).
To listen it is necessary to quit talking, open a space in the conversation that the other will
fill in when they are compelled to become the subject, to become the speaker. It is necessary to
put oneself in the position of the listener, attentive, susceptible to be impacted by what the
other has to say, but equipped with a theoretical structure that will enable one to act, that is,
interpret in a manner that effects the other and shakes him from his position of subject. This is
not the unconsciousness of psychoanalysis, because the errors, the flaws, the forgetfulness, and
the mistakes, are indications of the presence of a certain subject and his position, and they can
be interpreted.
It is necessary to listen to what the subject says without giving greater importance to one
part or another of what is being said and take into account that everything that the subject says
is important. It is necessary to pay attention to where the subject speaks from, to whom he
addresses himself, and the position he assumes vis-à-vis his own speech and the speech of the
other, since his interlocutor is the person to whom he is addressing his message. For example, in
the interview with the parents or the teacher, one can listen for the position that the child has
in their speech, as pointed out by Groisman and Jerusalinsky (1999), questioning their speech

and the data brought by them beyond the symptoms or presenting complaint. Listen for the
significants that mark the child in his story and how this story interacts with that of the parents.
In this speech a subject emerges as well as what he expects from the other (be it the
interlocutor, the teacher, school, or anyone else) and for the one who speaks, this is important.
The story of the patient should be heard, along with how the subject describes his family, work,
and social relationships.
b.2.2) Conversational Method
Another method adopted for this research/intervention is the conversational method. It is
a clinical psychoanalytical device developed by Jacques Allain-Miller in the decade of 1990.
It was at CIEN (Centre Interdisciplinaire sur l’Enfant) where it was first suggested to the
institution that they should go into the field and produce an applied psychoanalysis. The
institution was founded in 1996 in Paris and gathers some well-known psychoanalysts, besides
Jacques Alain Miller, Judith Miller, Beatriz Udenio, Eric Laurent, Philippe Lacadée, and others.
The method created proposes the application of psychoanalysis to the symptoms of modernity,
among which are included school symptoms, be them those related to the problems of the
students or the difficulties that the school and its members encounter in dealing with the
students.
According to Miller (2005):
“A Conversation, if successful, is a type of free association. The free association can become collective as long as we are not the owners of the signifiers. One signifier attracts another one and it is not important who produced it at any given moment. If we trust the signifier chain, several people participate in it. At least it is the fiction of Conversation to produce, not a collective enunciation, but a collective free association in which we expect a certain effect of knowledge. When things touch me, the signifiers of others give me ideas, help me, and in the end result (sometimes) in something new, a new angle, unprecedented perspectives.” (Miller, 2005, p.15-20).
In Brazil, two groups (Aleph at UFRJ and NIPSE at UFMG) are working with teachers and

students with the goal of modifying stereotype labels about children who attend school as well
as those who use the healthcare system.
The Aleph Project offered ten meetings to discuss the so-called student failure at school,
bringing together participants according to a network model with the inclusion of a
representative of each segment from participating schools that had contact with students, from
teachers and administrators to cafeteria and cleaning personnel. According to the authors, the
goal of the project was not to eradicate student failure at school, because they operate on the
presupposition that its causes cannot be determined. On the contrary, by using conversation,
they offer an attempt at finding contingent solutions to the gridlock that existed there and that
interfered in the students learning (Alves Jacob et al, 2008).
The objective of NIPSE is to study cases of students suspected of having a mental handicap
and who attend public schools in the state of Minas Gerais, using the clinical contributions of
psychoanalysis. They also propose to train teachers using the material that was developed from
the cases studied and from conversations that seek to rescue the knowledge teachers have
gained through their pedagogical practices in the school environment.
It is understood that psychoanalysis can contribute to the educational work done in
schools when it pushes the educational professionals out of their comfort zone, liberating the
signifiers that are tied to rigid meanings so that they can flow and encounter new meanings.
The proposal is based on Freud’s contributions in his analysis of civilizations malaise and
its effects on the subject, on Lacan’s contributions related to psychoanalysis applied to
institutions, on the above mentioned conversation methodology of Miller, and on the
contributions of contemporary psychoanalysts.
The method of conversation applied to groups of teachers seeks to create an environment
in which these professionals can speak freely about their practices. It is important that all
members of the group have an opportunity to speak. There is no intention, however, of

producing a group conclusion, but that each one participate and express their unique situations
as they are instigated by others.
In this manner “the focus on conversation has as its goal to open possibilities to question
ready-made arguments and sayings imposed by society instead of agreeing with the
formulations made by the Other – problematization” (Miranda, Vasconcelos, and Santiago,
2006).
This method is the focus of the social integration between members of the group, seeking
a shared construction of meaning. Listening to a psychoanalyst allows for misunderstandings to
be taken into consideration and elaborated together during this process of construction of
meaning. “The conversation seeks to promote the participation of the subjects in a lively
debate, a reflection” (Ruben and Besset, 2007).
Much could be said, but for now we can point out that our experience, acquired with the
Literacy and its Avatars project working for four years with the state and local public schools,
with financing from CAPES (within the Observatório de Educação), led us to supervise two
dissertations that focused on the teacher’s discourse, analyzing the modes of production and
the institutions ideology, from the point of view of the analysis of discourse. During this
“conversation” with the teachers, we observed that when we doubted, questioned, answered
back, pointed out the talk that was being circulated, promoted a dislocation of signifiers (and
the initial discourse that would label, for example, a childish behavior), shared the result of a
survey, commented on the attitude of a child in class, the relationships between students, or
criticized and diagnosed the student as having one of the various disorders known to medicine,
concepts would be broken and new signifiers and combinations of these would appear and it
would affect the position of the teacher vis-à-vis the student and the activity of teaching. In the
same way the child and the parents can also be transformed by discourse, freeing themselves
from perverse and limiting diagnosis and opening themselves up to learning.

This is a method of research/intervention, which is not costly beyond the personnel
expenses involved in the team and researchers.
b.2.3 Method of Training Teachers for Teaching Activities.
After the first two phases of data collection for the different components of the research,
training gatherings will the organized, in which the teachers will be led to reflect upon and dig
deeper (theoretically and practically) into the different situations that will be listed. This will
empower them in the process of identifying the educational needs of each child, leading to an
understanding that each child requires and individualized process of development of integrality
(wholeness). This will enable them to activate their active listening so as to capture the many
forms of learning within the group of children for which they have responsibility.
Dynamic training gatherings will be organized in which teachers will have the opportunity
to have contact with healthcare workers of different fields in which they will be able to discuss
various previously selected themes.
b.2.4) Clinical Interview Method
We will also use the Clinical Interview Method, which is patterned after the Clinical
Interviews of Psychoanalysis Orientation of Nipse24 (Santiago, 2015). This method will be used
to interview problematic students (those selected by the team of psychologists following the
analysis of documentation and the discourse of the school team). If the presenting symptom
should be inhibition or anguish, the objective is to identify if there is a suicidal risk. If the
presenting symptom is characterized by dysfunctional behavioral, the focus will be to identify
the satisfaction mode in play. The material taken from the psychoanalytical theory of the
relationship between sexuality and intellectual activity will serve as a guide to the approach
taken for this type of intellectual inhibition.
The clinical interviews are initiated with questioning the subject about the symptom
presented at school. A maximum of three interviews will be conducted.

It is to be noted that according to Ana Lydia Santiago (2011, p. 98) “the school
environment is preferred for this type of clinical investigation since, beyond the time spent in
the interview, it allows for observation of each one of the so-called problematic students in
experiential situations in the classroom, interactions with other children, and with adults in
general”.

4. Dissemination of knowledge
The results obtained by the research/intervention will be evaluated and followed by
means of questionnaires, before and after the intervention, to be completed by all
professionals that participated in the research. This includes teachers, administrators,
coordinators, and members of the health and education departments. Periodic evaluations of
the children in school through the use of diagnostic surveys will be used as results
measurement.
The knowledge obtained will be disseminated through participation of members in
symposiums, conferences, and seminars, on a national and international level, where the
results of the research will be shared and discussed with the scientific community. We will also
regularly publish in scientific journals our partial and long-term findings. The chosen journals
shall be indexed and sent to the scientific community of researchers and professionals in the
fields of Speech and Language therapy, Psychology, and Education.
Even though this research/intervention is based on actions that will be developed in the
educational community, it will be carried out in complete coordination with the department of
education so as to work with CEFAI and NAAPA.
