Lesson Plan for Lesson P910
US Army Interviews
Course Author: Mr. Mike Brettmann
Lesson Author: Mr. Le Denniston
Date prepared:
1. SCOPE
This lesson supports the overall P910 course objective by allowing students to interview members of
various US Army personnel categories (officers, warrant officer, non-commissioned officers, and
Army civilian employees) to gain an appreciation of their experience, education, career patterns, and
the role each plays in the Army. The lesson builds on instruction students have already received on
the US Armed Forces and the US Army Officer Corps.
This lesson emphasizes two field grade leader competency map (FGLM) skills by challenging
students to improve their ability to reason critically (2.4) and think creatively (2.5). During the
interviews, they will be challenged to demonstrate three specific leader behaviors that are indicative
of exemplary field grade officer skill. The behaviors are: Understand situations, find causes, arrive at
justifiable conclusions, make good judgments, learn from experience, be adaptable (2.4.2), view
problems from several perspectives (2.4.3) and challenges bias of self and subordinates while
developing new ideas and approaches (2.5.1). The behaviors identified in the FGLM provide a
common language and assist in the assessment of overall student performance by providing
performance indicators to differentiate between successful and exemplary performance.

7. CONDUCT OF LESSON
a. Introduction: (2 minutes). Instructors should remind students of the lesson objectives. Issue the
interview schedules, and explain to the students that they will have 15 minutes to interview, as a
group, each of six different categories of US Army personnel, including USMA, ROTC and OCS
officer graduates, a DA civilian, a Warrant Officer and a Non-commissioned officer.
Explain that the students will remain in their designated classrooms and the interviewees will
move from group to group. Groups will have 15 minutes for each interview, with a short period
between interviews so the interviewees can move. They should focus on experience, education, career patterns, and the role each plays in the Army. They should take notes and be prepared to
discuss their interviews at the end of the lesson.

c. Concrete Experience: (3 minutes). The instructor should paint the picture for the students thatthey will be spending the CGSOC course in a small group learning environment with various
American officers, and they will be working with many other groups of US Army personnel. Toget the most out of their experience in CGSOC, they will need to understand the background and
experience of their fellow students, their instructors, and the other people they will be working
with.
d. Publish and Process: (5 minutes). Some suggested questions include:
How do you feel about coming into such a new environment to learn?
What are you most curious about concerning your American fellow students?
How important do you think it is for you to understand the backgrounds of your American fellowstudents?
e. Generalize New Information: (104 minutes, with break at the midpoint). The GNI for this
lesson consists of the actual interviews. Instructors should follow the interview schedule attached
at Appendix B. Each interviewee will make a short presentation outlining their experience,
education and career pattern, followed by student questions.
f. Break: (10 minutes).
g. Develop: (10 minutes) The instructor should conduct a short discussion with the students to focus
their attention on what they have learned during the interview period. Some suggested questions
include:
How have these interviews changed your thinking about the US Army and its personnel?
What is the most important thing you have learned from the interviews? Why?
What is the most important difference you see between your Armys officer system and the US Army
system?
h. Apply: (31 minutes) The instructor should divide the group into 3 or 4 small groups, instructing
the groups to develop a list of the 5 most important things they still want to learn about US Army
officers and other personnel. At the end of 15 minutes, have each group in turn discuss their list
and encourage discussion among the groups.
i. Break: (10 minutes)

A Exceeded Standard. Consistent participation during class discussions, class practical
exercises, and briefings which are thought provoking, relevant, clear, logical, and is a major
contributor to student and group learning.B Meets Standard. Participation is appropriate, relevant, clear, accurate, logical, and
contributes to class learning.
C Below Standard. Borderline participation which is appropriate, rarely relevant, often
unclear, often inaccurate, illogical, and contributes very little to group learning.
U Unsatisfactory. Participation which is clearly inappropriate, irrelevant, unclear, inaccurate,
and often inhibits student and group learning.
Class Participation (Individual) Class participation in this lesson will form a part of the overall 75%class participation grade for IMSPC.Instructors assess each students demonstrated understanding of the
course material and his or her ability to develop and deliver cogent arguments or relevant insights from
course material in a clear and concise fashion. Students demonstrate their knowledge, skill, and ability
through the quality and focus of their discussion comments and questions, their preparation for class, theirability to reason critically and to think creatively, their performance during practical exercises and case
studies, and contributions to group work. Class participation is assessed during this lesson. Specifically
for this lesson, instructors focus on three field grade leader behaviors. Students will be expected to
demonstrate proficiency in: 2.4.2 Understand situations, find causes, arrive at justifiable conclusions,
