In 1974, ethnic differences

within the British colony of theGilbert and Ellice Islands causedthe Polynesians of the ElliceIslands to vote for separationfrom the Micronesians of theGilbert Islands. The following

year, the Ellice Islands becamethe separate British colony ofTuvalu. Independence was

granted in 1978.

crops can survive the salty airand poor soil. Copra (driedcoconut meat) is exported.

The marine fauna isabundant in the back andlagoons with tropical fish ofvarious colors.
