WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES – April 29, 2018 (Acts 9:26-31; 1 John 3:18-24;Jn. 15:1-8) Vinal Van Benthem ofs

Several years ago my late husband underwent bypass surgery. Complications required that we spend long periods of time in a series of hospital rooms with nurses and aides, surgeons and physician’s assistants, physical therapists and nutritionists. And in every case we witnessed firsthand the deeds that love does.

“Children, let us love not in word or speech, but in deed and truth.” The Oxford Dictionary defines “deed” as a “thing done intentionally or consciously”. We hear a lot of talk about love these days but this Scripture passage seems to say that that’s not enough. We are to love in ‘deed’ if we are truly children of God. In other words, actions speak louder than words. Jesus tells us that he is the vine onto which we must be grafted. “Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit…” How are we to bear this fruit? This fruit is the result of our actions. For the healthcare professionals who cared for my husband and the other people in the cardiac unit, the fruit of their actions was the physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of their patients. Real estate agents bear good fruit when they are truthful regarding properties they represent. Factory workers bear good fruit when they put in an honest day’s work; employers, when they pay an honest day’s wage. Jesus wasn’t interested in people who just talked a good talk. He expected his followers to love “…in deed and truth”. When Saul arrived in Jerusalem the disciples were afraid of him because, even though he was saying all the right things, his previous actions had produced a very different kind of fruit. It was only when they began to see that his talk and his deeds were in agreement that they accepted him into their company. The same is true today. Actions still speak louder than words. What do our deeds say about us? Do our talk and our deeds agree? Does our work bear honest fruit? Are we grafted cleanly to the vine that is Jesus, or are there still some places where we need to be pruned?

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Adoration is on the first Friday of each month. Sign-up sheets are available in the Narthex by the Chapel.

Please join us on May 4. Adoration begins after the 8:00 am Mass. The Hour of Prayer will be conducted at 11:00. At 11:30 am, Fr. Amal will hear Confessions. Divine Mercy Chaplet and Benediction begins at noon, concluding at 12:30 pm.

Save the Date - June 10

The annual Parish Appreciation Pancake Breakfast will be held after both Sunday morning Masses in the Fellowship Hall. Uncle Pancake will be here to delight both young and old alike.

This is a special day for the parish of St. Mary Magdalene. Father Amal and the staff would like to express their gratitude to everyone. It takes a village to accomplish our day-to-day activities and minis-tries. Bring your family and enjoy the morning with our thanks for you.

Ministry of the Sick….

Times of illness are stressful. We wish to visit with you at your home or in the hospital. Please notify us at the parish office of your desire for prayers, visits, Holy Communion, anointing of the sick and other needs. Because of federal privacy laws, notifica-tion must come from you or a family member.

If you have a family member who is homebound and would like a visit from Fr. Amal or from Lauri, our Pastoral Minister, please contact the parish office, and we will arrange a convenient

time to visit.

Prayer Shawls

Need a low-Gluten host at Communion?

The parish has a supply of low-gluten hosts that are made to comply with the Catholic Mass, are approved for use by Canon Law, and con-tain trace amounts of gluten (less than .002%.) They are considered safe for those with celiac disease or other gluten intolerances. Please alert the Sacristan, Father Amal, or Holly Saunders at extension 104 so that we can set-up the appropriate number of hosts before Conse-cration.

Please call Lauri, Pastoral Minister, at 715-258-2088, upon the birth of your child so Elizabeth Ministry can welcome your new baby into our parish family.

If you or your family are looking for a different kind of experience this summer, something which is not simply a holiday or a retreat, then the Mariapolis (City of Mary) might be just for you.

What is a Mariapolis? It is an event organized by the Focolare Move-ment and is characteristic of its spirit: it is a gathering of people of all ages and backgrounds, spending a few days together putting into practice the Gospel message of love. The main guideline for these gatherings, which take place in many countries throughout the world, is the ‘Golden Rule’, which invites us to do to others what we would like to be done to us. It is an opportunity to experience what happens in a day-to-day life when we have listening, gift of self and sharing as the basis for our relationships.

The Midwest Mariapolis is taking place from June 29 to July 3 in Green Lake, Wisconsin. Registration is now open, visit http://www.midwestmariapolis.org Registration deadline is April 30. For more information, email [email protected] or call 773-536-7873 or 708-484-9771.
