• Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics

- Responsible for the oficial Brazilian Cartography

- Less than 10% of the Brazilian territory is available in digital format (1:50.000)

- Analogic maps are mainly from the 50’s

• Brazilian Army - No maps available in digital format


ENVIRONMENTAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS

• There is no clear definition of what is important

• There is no consideration of data acquisition costs

• There is need for appropriate digital maps

• In the past financial resources were available, however misuse led to scarcity



• How to cope with this scenario?

Design of EIS that with pre-established objectives aiming at:- Data integration (institutions too)

- Systematization - Accessibility (distribution among agencies)



• It might be obvious, but…

- There is no culture for information systematization




• There is need for appropriate digital maps

It should not be an excuse for not developing an EIS:- Digitize (costs-benefit)- Allow data input even without the appropriate

maps



• It is not so obvious…

- many agencies still use analogical maps in their daily operations




• In the past financial resources were available, however misuse led to scarcity

Reduce development costs:- Opensource- Federal Government has guidelines to foster such

approach, but...
