Acontece agora em setembro a 7ª edição do Paraty em Foco. O tema é “futuro” e surge em uma imensidão de imagens fascinantes, em um mundo quase que totalmente digital. E esta é a pergunta que não quer calar: qual será a cara da nova fotografia? O evento, que em sua maior parte é gratuito e aberto ao público em geral, tenta responder a esta questão. É composto de exposições, palestras, análises de portfólios, projeções, workshops e leilões fotográficos. O Festival está entre os dez maiores eventos de fotografia do mundo e o fato de acontecer na cidade histórica de Paraty por si só já é um atrativo à parte, uma oportunidade tanto de ver, quanto de fazer imagens belas e instigantes.

The 7th edition of Paraty In focus is hap-pening this september. this year’s theme is “the future” shown through an immensity of fascinating images in an almost completely digital world. the question that won’t go away is: “What will be the face of this new photography?” the event, which is mostly free of charge and open to the general pub-lic, tries to answer this question.the event includes exhibits, lec-tures, portfolio analysis, projec-tions, workshops and photo auc-tions.the festival is one of the top ten photography events in the world and the fact that it happens in the historic town of Paraty is in itself an added attraction, an opportunity to see as well as to make, beautiful and provocative images.

Diuner Mello thinks of himself as a researcher of Paraty’s history. since he was a child, through conversations with his mother and close relatives, he has tried to understand the town where he was born and raised. Later, moved by a personal trauma, he decided to go deeper into the subject. “In 1968 I was sent to a boarding

school in Rio de Janeiro, and no one there knew of a town called Paraty. I had to say it was near angra. It didn’t even show up on the maps”, says Diuner, still showing some sadness about it.

When he returned, he spoke a lot with his uncle Zuzu and with Manoel torres, repositories of enormous amounts of information about the town. above all, he inherited important mate-rial collected by samuel costa, the first elected mayor of Paraty in 1918.

this was the principal source of documentation for Diuner. “samuel costa was a man born in Paraty, a poet, lawyer, and journalist. he wrote in 1922, in the newspaper a Razão, what Paraty must have been like in the year of Independence*. Before writing those articles, he drew a sketch of the village of Paraty that was very useful to me” he says, with a touch of emo-tion. this was the base on which Diuner wrote the text “Um Passeio pela história”**, which is now performed through the streets of Paraty by the Imperial co. and was awarded the 2010 Rio sociocultural award.

We are a very united group, formed by people who are passionate about theater. It took me more than 20 years to ripen this idea and I am indebted to the encouragement of every-one for making it happen.” Diuner says that the project began to take shape when he saw a group in são João del Rey, Minas gerais, performing outdoors with a Pa system amplifying the voices. When he returned to Paraty, he poured out the text and in five hours it was finished and ready. “It was crazy, that thing was so ripe in my head it just came out spontaneously.”

Diuner’s concern was to make sure the information was given through the dialogue and not as a didactic discourse. he also wanted to use characters that had actually existed, real people of the times. “It was madness, as I had never written dialogues. When I was done, even I couldn’t believe it”, says Diuner with a smile.

the Imperial co. started in 2008. Diuner did some traveling and when he returned, there was money and a cast. “the determination of everyone it was amazing, so much so that in 2009 we were able to perform every month of the year, which was very encouraging.” the award gave new impetus to the Imperial co., which is now thinking about adapting the play for the stage. “We have the reinforcement of Bernadete Passos, from the colibri Institute, who has joined us as art director. she has been doing great work, very innovative,” com-ments Diuner.

Diuner Mello considera-se um pesquisador da história de Paraty. Desde criança, em conversas com a mãe e os pa-rentes próximos, ele procurava entender a cidade onde nasceu e foi criado. Depois, motivado por um trauma, re-

solveu aprofundar-se no tema. “Fui estudar num colégio interno no Rio de Janeiro, em 1968, e lá ninguém sabia que existia uma cida-de chamada Paraty. Eu tinha que dizer que era perto de Angra. Nem dos mapas constava”, conta Diuner, ainda com alguma mágoa.

Quando voltou conversou bastante com seu tio Zuzu, com Manoel Torres, detentor de inúmeras informações. Mas, principal-mente, herdou um importante material coletado por Samuel Costa, primeiro prefeito eleito de Paraty, em 1918.

Esta foi a principal fonte de documentação de Diuner. “Samuel Costa era um homem nascido em Paraty, poeta, advogado e jorna-lista. Escreveu em 1922, no jornal A Razão, como deveria ser Para-ty no ano da Independência. Mas antes de começar esses artigos, fez um esboço da vila de Paraty que me foi bastante útil”, conta o pesquisador, com emoção. Esta foi a base sobre a qual Diuner es-creveu o texto “Um passeio pela História” que é apresentado pelas ruas de Paraty pela Cia. Imperial e que foi premiado recentemente no Rio Sociocultural 2010.

“Somos um grupo unido, formado por pessoas apaixonadas pelo teatro; demorei mais de 20 anos amadurecendo essa idéia e devo muito à motivação de todos para realizá-la”. Diuner comenta que o projeto começou a tomar força quando assistiu um grupo, em São João Del Rey, Minas Gerais, apresentar-se ao ar livre usan-do um aparelho que amplificava as vozes. Quando voltou a Paraty, debruçou-se sobre o texto e em cinco horas estava tudo pronto e acabado. “Foi uma loucura, aquilo já estava mais do que maduro na minha cabeça e saiu de forma espontânea”.

A preocupação de Diuner era que as informações do texto fossem pas-sadas nos diálogos dos personagens e não de uma forma didática discur-siva. Outro desejo do autor era que os personagens fossem reais, que ti-vessem realmente existido. “Foi uma loucura, nunca havia escrito diálogos e quando acabei, nem eu mesmo acreditei”, diz Diuner, sorrindo.

A Cia. Imperial começou em 2008. Diuner viajara e, quando voltou, já ha-via dinheiro e elenco. “Foi incrível a determinação de todos, tanto que, em 2009, nos apresentamos todos os meses do ano, o que foi estimulante”. O prêmio veio dar novo impulso à Cia. Imperial, que agora pensa em adaptar a peça para o palco. ”Contamos com o reforço de Bernadete Passos, do Instituto Colibri, que se juntou a nós como diretora de arte e vem fazendo um trabalho muito bom e inovador”, comenta Diuner.

Por ocasião da entrega do prêmio Sociocultural 2010, o Governador Ser-gio Cabral prometeu recursos substanciais para os dez primeiros coloca-dos, esperando com isso, que esses grupos sobrevivessem por mais um ano. “Isso foi maravilhoso, porque estamos tentando apoio nas estâncias municipais e esbarramos sempre nas questões burocráticas. Os projetos em Paraty simplesmente não evoluem”.

Diuner está muito satisfeito e orgulhoso com a Cia. Imperial e lembra que situar-se entre os dez primeiros, concorrendo com 288 projetos, signi-fica uma imensa vitória. “Nosso projeto é só cultural, não tínhamos conte-údo social, mas mesmo assim conseguimos destaque entre todos esses concorrentes”, comenta, orgulhoso.

Diuner Mello é o Diretor Presidente da Casa da Cultura de Paraty. Seu lu-gar preferido é o Centro Histórico como um todo; ele não consegue separar os lugares. “Todos os detalhes formam uma coisa só, para mim, indivisí-vel”, diz Diuner, acendendo mais um cigarrinho.

at the award ceremony for the sociocultural award 2010, governor sergio cabral pledged substantial resources to those who placed in the first ten slots, hoping that having it would allow those groups to survive another year. “It was wonderful, be-cause we are always trying to get support from municipal institutions and are al-ways colliding with bureaucratic issues. the projects in Paraty simply don’t evolve.”

Diuner feels deep satisfaction and is proud of the Imperial co., reminding us that getting a placement among the ten top projects, in competition with 288 other projects, is a great achievement. “Even though our project is cultural only, with no social content, we were able to stand out among all the competitors”, he remarks with pride.

Diuner Mello is the Director President of the house of culture of Paraty. his fa-vorite place is the historic Downtown as a whole; he is unable to see its parts as separate places. “all the details make a whole that to me is indivisible,” says Diuner, lighting up yet another cigarette.

Produção do Estúdio Madalena, de São Paulo e da Galeria Zoom, de Paraty, o evento oferece uma vasta programação, a maior parte totalmente gra-tuita e aberta ao público em geral. Iatã Cannabra-va, um dos diretores do Festival, fala dos prazeres e desafios de fazer o Paraty em Foco: “O Festival está entre os dez maiores eventos de fotografia no mundo e, mesmo com 80 novos convidados a cada ano, não conseguimos dar conta da demanda por novos olhares e pensamentos sobre a fotografia, tamanha a pluralidade que o meio vive. A fotografia passa por uma revolução. Não é apenas um meio de expressão, mas uma ação múltipla na socieda-de contemporânea, entre a arte e a ciência, sendo a grande protagonista das redes sociais”. E Canna-brava completa: “As transformações são tantas e tão rápidas que só podemos falar de futuro de duas maneiras: futuro imediato ou quase passado”.

ENCONtROs E ENtREvIstas - Atraindo boa parte do público (circulam pelo Paraty em Foco cerca de 8 mil pessoas), serão 14 encontros/entrevistas com grandes nomes da fotografia nacional e internacional, que acontecem na Casa de Cultura, principal cen-tro cultural da cidade. Serão quatro rodadas diárias: às 10:30, às 15, às 17 e às 19 horas, exceto no dia da abertura, em que haverá uma entrevista às 19 horas. Tudo será retransmitido ao vivo para o Espaço Multimídia (uma grande tenda que o Festival monta na Praça da Matriz), para o Lounge do Visitante e também pelo site oficial do evento: www.paratyemfoco.com.br.

ExPOsIçõEs - a cidade fica tomada pela fotografia. As mostras estarão espalhadas pelas galerias - Galeria Zoom, Traço Atelier, Galeria do Iphan, entre outras – e por lugares inusitados, como o 2º andar da Capelinha Nossa Senhora das Dores, o Mercadinho do Cais, os Tapumes, atrás da igreja Santa Rita, a Casa da Pólvora e outros.

CIRCUItO NOItE - É uma novidade desta edição do Festival: uma programação de exposições projetadas nas ruas de Paraty, que irão acontecer todas as noites, das 19 às 23 horas. Lembra-mos que as exposições são formadas por obras de artistas con-vidados pela organização, trabalhos escolhidos por convocação pública e o resultado de trabalhos sociais que usam a fotografia como plataforma.

WORkshOPs - Este ano serão mais de 25 workshops, com mais de 400 vagas. Os cursos têm duração de um, dois ou três dias e serão conduzidos por profissionais de renome, nacionais e in-ternacionais. É necessária inscrição prévia, que pode ser feita via site ou durante o festival, caso haja vagas remanescentes.

PROJEçõEs - Todas as noites, na Tenda, acontecem as famosas Noites de Projeção, com trabalhos fotográficos, documentários, curtas e filmes, sempre a partir das 22:30 horas.

A programação do Paraty em FocoLEItURa DE PORtFóLIO - O evento também oferece a Lei-

tura de Portfólio. A primeira dessas atividades estabelece contatos entre curadores, diretores de festivais, editores e jovens fotógrafos. Realizado no Lounge do Visitante, já tem presenças confirmadas de Alexandre Belém, Claudi Carre-ras, Eder Chiodetto, Geórgia Quintas e Isabel Amado.

LEILãO DE FOtOGRaFIas - O leilão, criado junto com o Festival, em 2005, traz valores mais convidativos do que os normais das galerias. Com grandes nomes da fotografia brasileira, é uma forma de incentivar o colecionismo.

COLECIONaDOR PaRaty EM FOCO - Mais uma novidade deste ano, é outro incentivo ao colecionismo de fotografia. Quem participar poderá colaborar, por meio de uma contri-buição anual, com a receita do Festival, ao mesmo tempo em que poderá iniciar ou aumentar sua coleção, com uma obra numerada e autografada. O primeiro autor do programa é a fotógrafa carioca Claudia Jaguaribe, que tem obras em coleções importantes como a da Maison Européenne de la Photographie e a Coleção Inhotim.

Meetings and interviews - there will be 14 meet-ings/interviews with great names in national and inter-national photography, attracting a great portion of the public. almost 8,000 people are expected to attend the event. they will be held at casa da cultura, the main cultural center of town. there will be 4 daily sessions: at 10:30 aM, 3:00 PM, 5:00 PM, and 7:00 PM, except on opening day, when there will be only one interview at 7:00 PM. they will be broadcast live to the Multimedia space (a large tent set up by the festival at the Main church square), to the Visitor’s Lounge, and through the event’s website at www.paratyemfoco.com.br.

exhibits - the city will be taken over by photography. the exhibits will be dispersed throughout the galleries - galeria Zoom, traço atelier, galeria do Iphan, among others – and unexpected locations such as the second floor of the Our Lady of Pain chapel, the Pier Market, the tapumes (boarded walls), behind santa Rita church, the casa da Pólvora and others.

night CirCuit - this is a novelty of this edition of the festival: a program of exhibits to be projected on the streets of Paraty, every night from 7 to 11 PM. these ex-hibits will gather the work of artists invited by the organi-zation, works chosen by public input and the production of social projects that use photography as a platform.

workshoPs - this year there will be more than 25 workshops, with over 400 participant slots. they will have a duration of one, two or three days and will be conducted by well-known Brazilian and foreign profes-sionals. Inscriptions are required, through the website or during the festival if slots are still available.

ProjeCtions - Every night, at the tent, there will be the famous Projection Nights, with photography works, documentaries, and short and long movies, beginning at 10:30 PM.

Portfolio reading - the event will also offer the Portfolio Readings to establish contact between cura-tors, festival directors, publishers and young photogra-phers. held at the Visitor’s Lounge, it has confirmed the attendance of alexandre Belém, claudi carreras, Eder chiodetto, geórgia Quintas and Isabel amado.

PhotograPhy auCtion - the auction, created along with the festival in 2005, features prices more enticing than the ones normally charged at the galleries. With works from great names in Brazilian photography, it is a means of stimulating photography collection.

Paraty in foCus ColleCtor - there’s something new this year that’s yet another incentive to photography col-lection. Participants will be able to support the festival through an annual contribution to its revenue, while in-creasing their collections with a numbered and signed print. the first author of the program is Rio de Janeiro’s claudia Jaguaribe, who has works in important collec-tions such as the Maison Européenne de la Photographie and the Inhotim collection. Conheça a tradicional produção da cachaça de Paraty

Aconteceu em Paraty, de 18 a 21 de agosto, a 29ª edição do festival da cachaça. O evento foi um grande sucesso e os visitantes tiveram a oportunidade de conhecer e degus-tar todas as cachaças de Paraty nos stands do festival.

Passado o evento, entramos no melhor período do ano para percorrer o roteiro da cachaça, pois todos os alambi-ques do município retomam a produção da safra de 2011, que segue até dezembro. Durante este período os visitantes poderão apreciar todas as etapas da produção, desde a co-lheita e a chegada da cana-de-açúcar ao pátio dos engenhos, onde é feita a moagem e pode-se provar um delicioso caldo de cana, passando pelo processo de fermentação, onde é possível entender as ações das leveduras que transformam os açúcares do caldo em álcool, gerando o vinho de cana, também conhecido na região como mucungo até a destila-ção, nos diferentes alambiques de Paraty.

During this period, visitors will be able to appreciate all the phases of production: from harvest and delivery of the sugar cane to the mills’ yards, where the cane is milled and one can try a delicious sugar cane juice; to the process of fermentation, which allows us to understand the role of the differ-ent yeasts that transform sugar into alcohol, generating sugar cane wine, known in the region as mucungo; to the distillation process in the various stills of Paraty. following the distillation process, visi-tors can get to know older stills, heated by direct wood fire, as well as more modern ones, which are heated with the steam from boilers.

Independentemente do modelo do alambique, o certo é que a qualidade da cacha-ça produzida é única. Qua-lidade e tradição estas que levaram Paraty a ser a única região produtora de cachaça no Brasil com reconhecimen-to de indicação geográfica de procedência.

O que valoriza ainda mais o roteiro proposto são as re-giões onde os alambiques se encontram, em meio a uma natureza deslumbrante, pró-ximos a diversas cachoei-ras e com restaurantes que prestigiam a culinária rural. O roteiro dos alambiques é um passeio imperdível, que proporciona diversão, cultura e lazer para toda a família e todas as idades.

this exposure gave Maria Martha the opportunity to go on several tours throughout the country with musicians such as Emílio santiago, altamiro carrilho and the great trombonist, Raúl de Barros. such tours eventually covered almost all the national territory.

Maria Martha has sung since she was a child; when she used to take her guitar to the roof of her home in campos do Jordão. In her youth she always won the prize for best performer in all the contests in which she participated. Everyone wanted her to perform their songs, but she was also a songwriter, as attested to on the plaque with her name in conser-vatória, a homage to her song seresta, theme of the soap opera “the Defeated goddess”, as well as the beautiful “canta bem-te-vi”, a hit in Paraty.

this paratyense by choice has carried the name of the city around Brazil through her appearances on many tV shows. a good example of this is “Mr. Brazil”, hosted by Rolando Boldrin, which in March was dedi-cated entirely to her and broadcast nationwide, declaring Paraty – RJ as her hometown. Maria Martha has recorded with chico Buarque, Paulinho da Viola, Inezita Barroso, and fafá de Belém, among many other Brazil-ian artists. she performed with the great Brazilian poet adélia Prado. she has shared the stage with Mônica salmaso, fabiana cozza, and Renato Braz. her 2003 album release received great reviews in são Paulo, and was considered to be “very beautiful.” she is now in the process of finish-ing the cD “artigo Que Não se Imita”, with songs by Noel Rosa, one of Bra-zil’s greatest songwriters from the 1920’s and 1930’s. We’ll be checking it out, and are sure to enjoy it.

Maria Martha é uma cantora que veio de São Paulo, trazendo a alegria e a beleza de seu canto para os ouvidos atentos de Paraty. Faz onze anos que mora na cidade onde formou uma legião de fãs - que se encantam com seu canto lindo e afinadíssi-mo e seu encanto como pessoa doce e afável que é.

Maria Martha conheceu o sucesso nos anos 1970, quando sua música foi tema da novela “Nina”, da Globo. Toda vez que surgia o casal Regina Duarte e Antonio Fagun-des, ouvia-se ao fundo “...flor amorosa, compassiva, sensitiva...”. Essa música levou--a ao primeiro lugar durante algum tempo nas rádios do Rio de Janeiro e em alguns estados do Brasil. Segundo ela, “havia um shopping center no Rio que mantinha um painel com as músicas melhor classificadas da semana, e eu, é claro, fiquei curiosa e fui conferir. Comecei a olhar de baixo pra cima e nada do meu nome aparecer, até que, para minha alegria e surpresa, eu o encontrei no 1º lugar da parada de sucessos”.

Essa exposição fez com que Maria Martha fizesse algumas turnês pelo país, com músicos como Emilio Santiago, Altamiro Carrilho e o genial trombonista Raul de Bar-ros. Nessas turnês apresentou-se em quase todo o território nacional.

Maria Martha cantou desde menina, quando levava seu violão para o telhado da sua casa em Campos do Jordão. Jovem, sempre ganhava o prêmio de melhor intér-prete em todos os festivais de que participava. Todo mundo a queria para defender suas músicas. Mas Maria Martha também é compositora, como mostra a placa com seu nome em Conservatória, em homenagem à sua composição “Seresta”, tema da novela “A Deusa Vencida” e a linda “Canta bem-te-vi”, sucesso em Paraty.

Essa paratyense por opção tem levado o nome da cidade para todo o Brasil por meio dos programas de televisão de que participa. Um bom exemplo foi o “Sr. Brasil” do Boldrin, que em março foi todo gravado com Maria Martha, e que foi transmitido por todo o país, e trazia, abaixo do nome da cantora, a palavra “Paraty-RJ”. Maria Mar-tha já gravou ao lado de Chico Buarque, Paulinho da Viola, Inezita Barroso, Fafá de Belém e muitos outros artistas brasileiros. Apresentou-se com a grande poetisa bra-sileira Adélia Prado. Dividiu palcos com Mônica Salmaso, Fabiana Cozza, Renato Braz. Seu disco lançado em 2003 foi elogiado pela crítica de São Paulo, que o considerou “belíssimo”. Agora está finalizando o CD “Artigo Que Não Se Imita”, Noel Rosa, letra e música. Vamos conferir e com certeza, gostar muito.
