Learning outcomes of the curricular unit

Syllabus

Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit’s objectives.

Teaching methodologies (including evaluation)

Demonstration of the coherence between the teaching methodologies and the learning outcomes

1. Definition of populism and populist parties and movements

2. Historical manifestations of the action of populist parties and movements (why populism is today more relevant

than before?)

3. Trends of current populist parties and movements

4. Analyses of some populist parties and movements in Germany, Austria, Slovak Republic, Spain, Finland, France,

Greece, The Netherlands, Hungary, Italy, Poland, United Kingdom, Sweden

5. The impact of populism and populist parties and movements on the party systems

Populism and populist parties and movements existed for ages and were subject of both scientific research and critical debate. Today they are again a spectre for democracy and, in Europe, a threat to the European project. The learning outcomes of the curricular unit are the understanding of the reason for the renewed glare of populism over the last decade and further back, in Europe and other geographies and what is the impact of that event on the political systems and, more specifically, on the party systems.
