Phrasal Verbs

PHRASAL VERBS – verbos acompanhados depreposições ou de partículas adverbiais.

Prepositional verbs: o significado pode serdeduzido das partes que o compõem.deduzido das partes que o compõem.

Phrasal verbs: o significado não pode serdeduzido a partir do verbo e da partícula adverbial.

Há verbos em inglês que se formam com partículasque podem ser preposições ou advérbios. Essesverbos são conhecidos como phrasal verbs, quepodem ser two-word verbs ou three-word verbs.

Examples:

A two-word verb: to put on (vestir-se)

A three-word verb: to put up with (tolerar)

Em alguns casos, a partícula pode ser separadado verbo. Com a presença de um pronome, elaserá, necessariamente, separada.

Examples:

Please turn on the lights.

Please turn the lights on.

Please turn them on.


Há casos em que a partícula não pode serseparada.

Examples:

I can’t go out tonight.

I need to look after my little brother.

We can’t say:

I need to look my little brother after.


VERBO + PREPOSIÇÃO

Quando um verbo com preposição for usado,o substantivo ou pronome será colocadodepois da preposição, exceto nas oraçõesinterrogativas (“what are you looking at?” )interrogativas (“what are you looking at?” )ou relativas (“This is the man I was talkingto.”).

Examples:

Look at those children.

Look at them.


O significado do verbo com preposiçãocoincide, em muitos casos, com aquele doverbo de forma isolado. Os verbos to pay eto pay for significam pagar. A preposiçãoserve para introduzir o complemento, nãoserve para introduzir o complemento, nãoagrega nenhum significado novo ao verbo.

Examples:

A: How much did you pay for that skirt?

B: I paid 50 reais.


VERBO + PARTÍCULA ADVERBIAL

Pode acontecer, no entanto, de o verbo terseu sentido modificado pela presença dapartícula. Assim, to look significa olhar, masto look after significa cuidar de alguém. Toto look after significa cuidar de alguém. Tobring significa trazer, mas to bring upsignifica criar, educar uma criança.

Examples:

They brought up their children in a very

traditional way.

Quando um verbo não tem complemento, querdizer, não apresenta nenhuma variação em suaestrutura, então a partícula é colocada sempredepois do verbo.

Examples:

They didn’t show up.

Please, come in.

Tickets are sold out.

A prisoner run away.


Nós frequentemente usamos verbos com asseguintes palavras:

in on up away round over

about by out off down

back through along forward


Nós frequentemente usamos on / off / out / back/ round etc., com verbos de movimento.

Examples:

The bus was full. We couldn’t get on.

Sally is leaving tomorrow and coming back onSaturday.

When I touched him on the shoulder, heturned round.


Compare in e out:

In = into a room, a building, a car, etc.

Examples:

How did the thieves get in?How did the thieves get in?

I’ve got a new flat. I’m moving in on Friday.

Da mesma forma você pode dizer go in, come

in, walk in, break in etc.


Out = out of a room, building, a car, etc.

Examples:

He just stood up and walked out.

I had no key, so I was looked out.

Da mesma forma você pode dizer go out,

get out, move out, let somebody out, etc.


Outros verbos + in:

drop in / call in = fazer uma visitinha

Example:Example:

I dropped in to see Chris on my way home.

join in = participar (de algo)

Example:

We’re playing a game. Why don’t you join in?


plug in = ligar algo (a algo)

Example:

The fridge isn’t working because you haven’t

plugged it in.

fill in = preencher algo

Example:

Please fill in the application form and send it

to us by 28 February.

Você também pode dizer fill out a form.


Outros verbos + out:eat out = comer em um restaurante, não em casa.

Example:

There wasn’t anything to eat home, so we

decided to eat out.

leave out = omitir, não incluir.

Example:

In the sentence ‘She said that she was ill’, you can

leave out the word ‘that”.


drop out of college / university / a course / a race =

parar antes de ter completamente terminado.

Example:

Gary went to university but dropped out after a

year.year.

get out of something that you arranged to do =

evitar fazer.

Example:

I promised I’d go to the wedding. I don’t want to

go, but I can’t get out of it now.


work out = fazer exercícios

Example:

Chris works out at the gym three times a week.

work out = desenvolver, progredir

Example:Example:

Good luck for the future. I hope everything works out well for you.

work something out = calcular, solucionar

Example:

345x76? I need to do this on paper. I can’t work it out.


Vejamos agora alguns exemplos com ON e OFF.

Verbo + on = continuar fazendo algo.

drive on/ walk on/ play on = continuar drive on/ walk on/ play on = continuar

dirigindo, caminhando, jogando, etc.

Example:

Should we stop at this gas station or should

we drive on to the next one?


go on = continuar

Example:

The party went on until 4 o’clock in the morning.

Keep on doing something = fazer continuadamente Keep on doing something = fazer continuadamente ou repetidamente.

Example:

He keeps on criticising me. I’m fed up with it!


Verbo + off

Finish something off = fazer a última parte

de algo.

Example:

A: Have you finished painting the kitchen?A: Have you finished painting the kitchen?

B: I’ll finish it off tomorrow.

Go off = explodir

Example:

A bomb went off in the center, but fortunately

nobody was hurt.


Show off = tentar impressionar as pessoas

com sua habilidade, seu conhecimento, etc.

Example:

Look at that boy on the bike riding with two hands.

He’s just showing off.He’s just showing off.

Tell somebody off = repreender alguém, falar

zangado por ter feito algo errado.

Example:

Clare’s mother told her off for wearing dirty shoes

in the house.
