H e p i t e s î m b r ă ţ i ş e a z ă l a î n c e p u t carie-r a a r m e l o r , o b ţ i n â n d î n 1809 — primul î n p r o m o ţ i a s a — g r a d u l d e sublocote­n e n t d e a r t i l e r i e . I n 1873 el ob­ţ i n e t i t l u l d e d o c t o r î n ş t i i n ţ e l e fizice şi m a t e m a t i c e , i a r d o i a n i m a i t â r z i u şi pe a c e l a d e i n g i n e r d e c e r n a t d e Ş c o a l a Po-l i t e c h n i c ă d e p e l â n g ă U n i v e r s i t a t e a din B r u x e l l e s .

Î n t o r s î n ţ a r ă , c u s ă n ă t a t e a î n t r u c â t v a s d r u n c i n a t ă , e l p ă r ă s e ş t e a r m a t a d a r îşi f a c e p e d e p l i n d a t o r i a î n t i m p u l războ­i u l u i p e n t r u i n d e p e n d e n ţ ă , c â n d pâr t ie i , p ă e f e c t i v l a l u a r e a R a h o v e i .

C e l e b r u l a u t o r N o v a l i s z i c e î n aforis­m e l e s a l e : „ A fi u n c e r c e t ă t o r al N a t u , r e i e s t e c e a m a i f r u m o a s ă ş i s a c r ă mi­s i u n e !" H e p i t e s a s i m ţ i t î n el aceas tă v o c a ţ i e , a c e a s t ă m i s i u n e . D u p ă ce în s t r ă i n ă t a t e a v i z i t a t n u m e r o a s e In s t i t u t e ş i O b s e r v a t o a r e m e t e o r o l o g i c e , el îşi face l a B r ă i i l a — u n d e î ş i e x e r c i t a meser ia d e i n g i n e r — u n p o s t p r o p r i u de obser­v a ţ i e l a c a r e l u c r a d e l à 6 d i m i n e a ţ a p â n ă l a 10 s e a r a f ă c â n d o b s e r v a ţ i u n i oră d e o r ă . Cu gri je Thamus cată împrejuru-i Nu-i suflet. Totu-i mut şi'n nemişcare S'a înşelat şi'i v'lne să se'ntoarcă : L-aijteaptă zarul jos şi vinul dulce, Şi dătătoarea de fiori Melisă. Dar iată'n întunerec glasul tainic A treia oară strigă : Thaimus,

De atunci a participat la elaborarea unei păci, care n'a fost pacea noastră. Ar fi putut face m a i b ine? Astfel executarea fină de o sublimă minuţiozitate şi delicateţe picturală, evidenţiază cu prisosinţă în minunatele sale peisagii : Toamnei, Peisagiu de iarnă, Căsuţă la ţară. Clopotniţa, Pa­sărea, Mănăst irea Agapia, Biserica din Sat, Căsuţă la Silistra, etc., cari îl ;işea. ză în rândul marilor reprezentanţi ai acestui gen. Multe >din poisagilie sale aduc aminte de Grigorescu.

Dar la expoziţia pictorului Creţulescu, găseşti şi unele realităţi ale specificului niostru pur. Dealtfel aceasta este reva nou ce inaugurează expozantul cu suc­ces. Astfel sunt cu ardoare expuse în culori vii si jiline de viaţă tărăncile noastre d e l à ţară : „La munca câmpii-lui", . L a treerat" sau „La desfăcutul porumbului . Găseşti deasemeni felurite

obiceiuri strămoşeşt i cari mai există pe alocurea a căror redare îmbinată minunat cu nota realităţi, a impresionat pe M. S, Regina Maria, reţinând câteva dintre cele mai specifice ca : „Procesi­une de ploaie", „La dejrănat'', etc..

Ca la fiecare exjroziţie a lui Creţule­scu nu puteau lipsi nici floriile şi cape. tele de expresia, cari au găsit şi de datsj aceasta un loc de frunte prin culor.'tul lor îngrijit cu linii de expresivă nuan­ţare picturală in : „Ochiul boului", „Cri­zanteme", „Pansele", „Bujorii" precum şi în Moşu Grigore, Popa Andrei, Pofi tretul Ministruluil plenipotenţiar, C. Nano. e t c . .

în treaga expoziţie respiră o atmos­feră- de curată seninătate înbinată ar­monios cu real i tatea specifică — cu măestrie aleasă — care ne îndreptăţe­şte ca pe l ângă laudele ce le a adresat M. S. Reg ina Maria cu ocazia vizitei Sale, să dorim ca şi viitoarele expoziţii ale pictorului Creţulescu să fie la înăl­ţ imea artist ică prezentă.

Opera e originală şi unică în felul său. Interpretarea poetizată a spuselor româneşti din moşi strămoşi, e judicioasă şi mişcătoare. Ade­verirea lor treptată prin întâmplări zilnice şi banale e reuşită, tâlcul lor apare firesc, e înduieşălor.

Autoarea e tânără, desigur, şi cu aoânt nestăvilit. Crescută poate la poalele Carpafilor, dar având în vine şi sânge occidental, căci trans­punerea legendelor şi poveştilor noastre, păstrează farmecul iniţial, dar e şi meşteşugită.
