Affected vehicles: E46 M47, M57 E46 M52/B28, M54/B30 E39 M47, M57 E39 M52/B25, M54/B25 Touring E39 M52/B28, M54/B30, M62/B35 E53 M54/B30, M57 E36/7 M52/B28, M54/B30 E36/7 S50 and S54 E38 M51, M52/B28, M62/B35 Manufacturing period: September 1997 to December 2002 Remedy: Replace 5th and reverse gear locking pin bearing bushes. Note: In series production, improved bearing bushes were introduced in January 2003. Procedure: In case of customer complaint, the 5th/reverse gear locking pin bearing bushes must be replaced as described in Repair Instructions 23 11 565 (C-transmission) and 23 11 566 (F-transmission) . Note: The transmission must be removed to replace the bearing bushes. Special tools 23 4 021 , 23 4 022 and 23 4 023 are needed to perform the repair. Complaint: - It is difficult to move the gear lever into and out of the 5th /reverse gear shift gate.

- The gear lever does not automatically move from the 5th/reverse gear shift gate backto the centre position

- No shift gate guidance

Cause: Selector shaft locking pin sticking in bearing bush.

Affected vehicles:

Manufacturing period: September 1997 to December 2002

• 23 0 170

• 23 4 021

Place transmission (1) with special tool 23 0 170 in assemblystand 00 1 450 .

Note:

1=Locking pin for reverse gear

Release retaining ring (1).

Drive sealing cap (2) out of transmission housing with a suitabletool.

Important!Bore hold must not be damaged. A burr or a dent can causethe sealing cap to leak.

Installation:

Replacing sealing cap (2).

Note:

Remove pressure spring and locking pin.

Important!Pressure spring and locking pin for reverse and 5th gearsmust not be mixed up.

Slant must point downwards in bell housing in direction oftravel!

5th gear locking pin:

Force open bearing bushing (1) and withdraw using a suitabletool.

Important!Force open bearing bushing (1) at specified indent (2) only.

Bore hold must not be damaged!

Drive in bearing bushing (1) with special tool (see table) as faras it will go.

Important!Make sure you use the correct special tool, as the differenttools have different dimensions!

5th gear 23 4 022 (short)

Reverse gear 23 4 023 (long)

Drive in sealing cap (1) with special tool 23 4 021 .

Fit retaining ring.
