Description of outcrops
Stop 30
Quarry of Poty Cement (Votorantim Cement), next to Maria Farinha, Olinda/PE.
Outcrop of the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary; contact between the Gramame
(Maastrichtian) and Maria Farinha formations (Albertão et al., 1994; Koutsoukos,
1996, 1998). Lithologically, there occurs a sequence of carbonate mudstones
(calcilutites) intercalated with more argillaceous levels (marlstones). The base of the
Maria Farinha Formation is marked by a bioclastic packstone of aproximately 50 cm
of thickness. The sequence of these strata can be associated to climatic variations
with alternation between rainier and drier periods and with storm cycles. The
Cretaceous-Terciary boundary approximately corresponds to the contact between
the Gramame abd Maria Farinha formations, and is marked by a discontinuity of 5th or
6th order.
Contact between the Gramame and Maria Farinha formations. K-T boundary.
The quarry section of the Gramame Formation flooded by heavy rains.
The outcrops of the Maria Farinha Formation are represented by intercalations of
calcilutites and marlstones, with bioturbation (Thalassinoides), interference waves,
and fossils.
Bioturbations (Thalassinoides) in loose limestone blocks
of the Maria Farinha Formation.
Interference wave marks in the limestones of the Maria Farinha Formation.
Fossil gastropodes in loose limestone blocks of the Maria Farinha Formation.
Following the profile in the direction of younger strata, three (3) samplings had been
made, in the probable zones P1, P2 base and P2topo de Blow (1969), referring to the
international foraminiferal zonation.
General view of the mudstone carbonates and marlstones
of the Maria Farinha Formation.
Nautilloid in the limestones of the Maria Farinha Formation.

Quarry of Nassau Cement (Agro-Industrial Itapessoca S.A.), Island of Itapessoca,
Goiana/PE. Outcrops of carbonate mudstones and marlstones interbedded of the
Gramame Formation, Maastrichtian.
General view of the exploration quarry for the limestones
of the Gramame Formation. NASSAU Quarry.
Small cut-and-fill channel features in limestones of the Gramame Formation.
NASSAU Quarry.

overlying the carbonate sequence of the Gramame Formation
General view of the exploration levels of the Gramame Formation, with the rhythmic intercalation of carbonate mudstone and marlstone layers. NASSAU Quarry.
Calcite concretions of calcita dispersed in the carbonate mudstones of the Gramame Formation. NASSAU Quarry.
Dispersed nodules of pirite/calcopirite in the carbonate mudstones of the Gramame Formation
