PRINCIPAL’S NEWS Nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa “If you look at problems the way you have always looked at them you will always come up with same answer.” This quote encapsulates the whole mantra that drives INQUIRY BASED TEACHING AND LEARNING This diversified and collaborative approach to learning allows for divergent ways of thinking and very importantly, problem solving. International leaders with this approach to problem solving are of course Google. As our students experienced first hand when they visited Silicon Valley last year In this world they sit around tables and first collaborate on understanding the problem, and then use their skill set to break new ground with solutions. During their trip our students saw how the drive-less vehicle was actually a solution that came from a Google team who had to solve a set of problems that came from insurance companies. While by comparison our students are at the emergent end of INQUIRY BASED TEACHING AND LEARNING, it is refreshing to see our curriculum embrace the whole school inquiry and include aspects of Sci.Tech.Engineering.Arts.Maths (STEAM), entrepreneurial skills and sustainability - all very relevant 21st Century skills. Our whole school inquiry of “HOW CAN I MAKE A DIFFERENCE?” Is now in its 5th week. Student inquiries have looked at local, regional and national challenges and begun their journey of understanding and problem solving solutions: 5 year olds have begun marketing, making and selling home made ‘Make A Wish’ bracelets to raise funds for boredom buster packs for other young people in hospital. (I hope you all have your orders in!) 11 year olds have carried out scientific and investigative studies in the bush to understand and problem solve how we can aid the return of native birds to school. 13 year olds are networking with local businesses to create a form of surplus food meals on wheels for elderly in our community and 15 year olds are working to problem solve ways to decrease the massive 44,000 figure of homeless people in our country. To encourage our young people to be ground breakers of global issues in time to come, we are celebrating their skills with a documentary of their work. The footage is been collated by a professional company and we will have a premiere viewing of their work - red carpet and all on 28th September. Please note that tickets are limited

INNOVATIVE AND MODERN CURRICULUM

Staffing News

On 1st September we farewelled Whaea Keturah Manihera who left us to continue her studies at Massey University - she has helped our sporting development immensely this year and we wish her all the best.

We are also very proud of Whaea Kat Haerewa who will be leaving us at the end of the term to begin her new journey as Principal at Whenuakura School. We welcome Michael-Lydia Winiana who will be supporting staff with overall learning of students

Te Kahui Whetu

Staff collaborated together this month to learn and perform a kapa haka bracket at the Senior Secondary Teachers Kapa Haka festival - Te Kahui Whetu. Our team had first time performers to well seasoned artists. It was a great opportunity to learn a new set of skills and enjoy the positive energy created from singing and laughing together.

Connecting School, Tertiary and Employment Opportunities

As seniors prepare their pathways of learning for next year and Year 13’s prepare for their exciting journey beyond our school gates, it is important that we are working to make

connections between school, workforce and tertiary providers. The annual Taranaki Careers Day and Why Ora Science Careers day were both informative

and helpful exhibitions that work to assist our young people. As a follow on from this our Student Led IDP/ Course selection day is on

Wednesday 13th September. All year 13s will be involved in a day long employment/ tertiary preparation day. This will include collaborating to fill out tertiary applications, complete CVs, learn new interview technique skills and other helpful tips that are designed to make them work ready.

Chinese Festival Our first ever Chinese Festival was a jam packed event full of creative chaos. Students from Kakaramea, St Jos and Whenuakura joined us to celebrate the colour and culture of China. Mandarin teachers from around the North Island travelled to us to run workshops - kung fu, opera mask painting, bracelet making, paper cutting, dumpling making and messages from the great wall of China. We were also very lucky to have guests from the sponsors of the event - Asia NZ Foundation and Vuw Confucius Institute. We would like to thank everyone for helping to ensure our festival was such a success, especially our Sponsors.

PROUDLY PROMOTING CONNECTED CITIZENS OF

GLOBAL COMMUNITIES

Seabed Mining

Students sat amongst our wider community to watch the live stream of the decision made around the TPR application to mine millions of tonnes of iron sand from the Patea Beach Coast. While the outcome was not what the community was hoping for, with approval being given, we are aware that local iwi KASM and other organisations will work together to continue to fight this decision to be over-turned in High Court. Charlotte Stark was chosen to present at the Education and Science select Committee at Parliament last month.

It was a real honour to have Patea Area School mentioned in Hekia Parata’s valedictory speech.

The reality is however that this level of recognition doesn’t just happen; but comes from a commit-ment to be relevant, connected and contributing at a regional level.

Recently we were invited to be guest speakers at the Youth Awards launch

and to run a workshop on our journey at the National Area Schools Conference.

New Entrant Social Inquiry—Make A Wish !

Be sure to order one of the make a wish bracelets handmade by this group of 5 year olds who are making a difference by raising funds so they can make boredom buster packs for other children in hospital
