Estimados Irmãos e Amigos,

Quando eu dava aulas na escola primária, uma das

lições que sempre gostei de ensinar as crianças e que

elas gostavam de ouvir, foi o conto bíblico de Davi e

Golias. A imaginação das crianças ficava iluminada pela

bravura de Davi e da sua fé em Deus.

Muitas vezes me pergunto se esta mesma história

ainda nos impressiona, agora que somos adultos! Nós

todos sabemos a história sobre um menino conhecido

por David, que lutou e matou um gigante chamado

Golias. Golias era um poderoso guerreiro, um gigante

de homem. Ele estava protegido dos pés à cabeça por

uma armadura feita de bronze. Este fato por si só

pesava mais de 46 quilos e estava armado com uma

espada e lança. Enquanto que David era um jovem

pastor. Não tinha nenhuma armadura de proteção. E

nem tinha espada ou lança para se proteger. A arma de

David era uma laço e sua munição, cinco pedras lisas

que ele pegou de um riacho próximo. No entanto,

David foi capaz de derrotar o gigante que todo o

exército israelita tinha medo de enfrentar.

Em toda nossa vida, somos solicitados a enfrentar

vários gigantes. Mas será que os gigantes são reais!

Gigantes não são o fruto da nossa imaginação. Gigantes

não são apenas imagens dos nossos sonhos. Gigantes

são os problemas, prazeres, dores, desafios que

enfrentam em vários momentos da vida. Um gigante é

Dear Brothers and Friends,

When I was teaching in primary school one of the

lessons I liked to teach and the children always seemed

to enjoy was the biblical tale David and Goliath. The

imagination of the children was fired up by the bravery

of David and his faith in God.

I wonder if we could still be fired up and enthused by

this story in our adult lives. We all know the story about

a boy known as David, who fought and killed a giant

named Goliath. Goliath was a mighty warrior who was

a giant of a man. He was protected from head to toe by

a suit of armour made of bronze. This suit alone

weighed more than 46 kilograms and he was armed

with a sword and spear. David was a young shepherd

boy. He had no armour for protection. And had no

sword or spear for protection. David’s weapon was a

sling and his ammunition was five smooth stones which

he picked up from the stream nearby. Yet David was

able to defeat the giant that all the Israelite army were

afraid to face.

tudo o que nos distrai do caminho de Deus. Qualquer

coisa que nos afasta do serviço de Deus e qualquer um

ou qualquer coisa que leva a nossa paixão para longe

de Deus. Nós ouvimos o chamado de Deus para ser

marista. O gigante triunfa quando não vivemos

fielmente o nosso chamado em serviço de Deus. Muitas

vezes é o nosso egoísmo que cria os gigantes na nossa

vida.

No seu livro “Facing the Giants in Your Life” (Desafiando

Gigantes na Sua Vida), Samuel Burgess sugere alguns

gigantes que podem fazer com nos desviemos do

verdadeiro serviço à Deus. Aqui estão alguns exemplos,

mas no entanto, você pode adicionar muitos outros,

caso tenhas tempo para pensar no assunto:

• Existe o gigante do ressentimento

• Existe o gigante do medo

• Existe o gigante da solidão

• Existe a gigante de culpa e vergonha

• Existe o gigante da preocupação

• Existe o gigante do desânimo

• Existe o gigante do ciúme

• Existe o gigante da depressão

• Existe o gigante do despero

• Existe o gigante da amargura

• Existe a gigante do orgulho

• Existe o gigante do egoísmo

• Existe a gigante da dúvida

• Existe a gigante de ...... ..

Como podes ver, estas coisas

podem nos distrair, nos

devorar, e drenar-nos de ser

tudo o que Deus quer fazer de

nós. Podeis ver o quão

importante é para matar os

gigantes assim como Davi

matou Golias.

Qual é o teu Gigante atual?

Como podes encara-lo? És

capaz de ecara-lo como

problema ou como

possibilidade?

Max Lucando em Take Goliath Down (Destrua o Golias)

escreve: "Se você se concentras sobre os gigantes -

você vai tropeçar. Concentre-se em Deus, então sua

gigante vai cair.""

Ele continua a nos dizer por que David levou cinco

pedras para a batalha.

All our lives we are asked to face our giants. Have you

thought about the fact that giants are real! Giants are

not the figment of your imagination. Giants are not

merely images from your dreams. Giants are the

problems, pleasures, pains, challenges that you face at

various times in life. A giant is whatever distracts us

from the focus from God. Anything that turns us away

from the service of God and anyone or anything that

takes our passion away from God. We have heard the

call of God to be Marist. The giant triumphs when we

do not live up to the call and lose the passion to serve

God. Often it is our selfishness that creates the giants

in our life.

In his book “Facing the Giants in Your Life”, Samuel

Burgess suggests some Giants that might cause you to

detour from your true service of God. Here are some

examples, and doubtless you could add many more if

you took time to think about them.

There is the giant of resentment

There is the giant of fear

There is the giant of loneliness

There is the giant of guilt and shame

There is the giant of worry

There is the giant of discouragement

There is the giant of jealousy

There is the giant of depression

There is the giant of hopelessness

There is the giant of bitterness

There is the giant of pride

There is the giant of selfishness

There is the giant of doubt

There is the giant of ……..

As you can see, these things can distract us, devour us,

and drain us of being everything that God intended us

to be. You can see how important it is to slay the giants

just as David slayed Goliath.

What is your current Giant? How do you regard it? Do

you see it as a problem or do you see it as a possibility?

Max Lucando in Take Goliath Down writes “If you focus

on the giants – you stumble. Focus on God then your

giant tumbles.”

He goes on to tell us why David took five stones into

battle.

Stone one: The stone of the Past.

Pedra número um: A pedra do Passado.

Golias movimentou a memória de David. Lembre-se

das obras maravilhosas que Deus por meio de ti, fez na

tua vida. Ele nunca te abandonou.

Pedra número dois: A pedra da Oração.

David primeiro rezou a Deus antes de enfrentar Golias.

Não enfrentem os vossos gigantes sem antes rezar.

Dedicar tempo para a oração. S. Paulo escreveu; "Essa

oração é essencial nesta guerra em curso. Concentra-te

na oração sem contar o tempo. "

Pedra número três: A pedra da Prioridade.

David colocou Deus em primeiro lugar. Esteja disposto

a entregar a tua vida a Deus.

Pedra número quatro: A pedra da Paixão.

David correu em direção a Golias com paixão por Deus

e pelo povo de Deus. Devemos fazer o mesmo quando

enfrentamos os nossos gigantes.

Pedra número cinco: A Pedra da Persistência.

David nunca desistiu. Ele pegou cinco pedras e nunca

desistiu.

Na história, David derrotou Golias, mas a vitória foi

obtida não só por David, mas pela nação. O mesmo

conosco: quando derrotamos os nossos gigantes nós

mesmos crescemos, mas muitos outros se beneficiam

quando nós não desistimos: eles também mudam ou

são ajudados.

Todos nós temos desafios a enfrentar e a superar, ou

então corremos para longe deles ou pegamos num laço

e enfrentamos. É como lidas com os desafios diários

que saberás se estás a crescer ou a estagnar ou

simplesmente a sofreres derrotas depois de derrotas.

Joshua J Marinha disse, "Desafios são o que tornam a

vida interessante: superá-los é o que dá sentido à vida."

A próxima vez que tiveres dúvidas sobre si mesmo, a

sua vocação e do trabalho que Deus tem para ti, não

fuja, mas enfrente o "gigante" para que possas

continuara trilhar o caminho que queres.

Que Deus vos abençoe.

Goliath jogged David’s memory. Remember the

wonderful works God has done for you and through

you. He has never let you down.

Stone two: The stone of Prayer.

David first prayed to God before facing Goliath. Don’t

face your giants without first praying. Dedicate time for

prayer. St Paul wrote; “That prayer is essential in this

ongoing warfare. Pray hard and long.”

Stone three: The stone of Priority.

David put God first. Be willing to give your life to God.

Stone four: The Stone of Passion.

David ran towards Goliath with passion for God and for

the service of God’s people. We should do the same

when we face our giants.

Stone five: The Stone of Persistence.

David never gave up. He took five stones and he never

quit.

In the story David defeated Goliath, but the victory was

gained not only by David, but by the nation. The same

with us: when we defeat our giants we ourselves grow

but many others benefit when we do not give up: they

too change or are helped.

We all have challenges to face and to overcome: or else

we run away from them or throw in the towel. It is how

you deal with these challenges that help you to grow or

to stagnate or to suffer defeat.

Joshua J Marine said, “Challenges are what make life

interesting: overcoming them is what makes life

meaningful.”

The next time you have doubts about yourself your

vocation and the work that God has for you, do not run

away but face the “giant” and so that you can continue

on the road you have chosen.

artin Buber tells the story about a

rabbi’s disciple who begged his master

to teach him how to prepare his soul for

the service of God. The holy man told

him to go to Rabbi Abraham, who at the time was still

an innkeeper.

The disciple did as

instructed and lived in

the inn for several weeks

without observing any

vestige of holiness in the

innkeeper, who, from

morning prayers till

night devoted himself to

the affairs of his business. Finally the disciple

approached him and asked him what he did all day.

“My most important occupation,” said Rabbi Abraham

“is to clean the dishes properly, so that not the slightest

trace of food is left, and to clean and dry the pots and

pans, so that they do not rust.”

When the disciple returned home and reported to his

rabbi what he had seen and heard, the rabbi said to

him, “Now you know the answer about how to prepare

your soul for the service of God.”

The way to reach God is by doing everything whole-

heartedly and genuinely; everything (and every act) is

full of God’s holiness – so treat it accordingly - with

dignity and respect!

discípulo do rabino que implorou a seu

mestre para ensiná-lo a preparar a sua alma

para o serviço de Deus. O santo homem disse-lhe para

ir para o rabino Abraham, que na época ainda era

gerente de um estaleiro.

O discípulo fez como instruído e vivia na estalagem por

várias semanas sem observar qualquer vestígio de

santidade no local, pois o rabino, a partir de orações da

manhã até a noite dedicava-se aos assuntos do seu

negócio. Finalmente, o discípulo se aproximou dele e

perguntou-lhe o que ele fez durante todo o dia.

"Minha ocupação mais importante", disse o rabino

Abraham "que é limpar os pratos corretamente, de

modo que não haja menor vestígio de comida, e limpar

e secar as panelas e frigideiras, para que elas não

enferrujem."

Quando o discípulo voltou para casa e relatou ao seu

rabino o que tinha visto e ouvido, o rabino lhe disse:

"Agora sabes a resposta sobre como preparar a tua

alma para o serviço de Deus."

Chega-se a Deus, fazendo

tudo com honestidade e

de todo coração; tudo (e

cada ato) é cheio de

santidade de Deus – por

isso presta atenção - com

dignidade e respeito!

had to be hospitalised for a period, and spent some time recuperating in

Message addressed to Marist Laity. Here is an

extract from the script)

“At the time of the death of Steve Jobs**, a video of

the speech that he directed to a group of graduates

of Stanford University in the year 2005 came to light.

It had been a year since he had been diagnosed with

cancer and therefore on that occasion he spoke with

a lot of authority about life and also about death.

I was impressed by his affirmation that nobody wants

to die; even those that want to go to heaven are not

in too much of a hurry… "Death is our common

destiny, nobody will escape from it. And thus it

has to be, because death is the best invention of

life, is the agent of change in life. It eliminates

the old and leaves space for the new".

Indeed, it is difficult for us to accept that for

something new to be born, something has to die. We

resist death.

Vídeo dirigida aos leigos maristas. Aqui está um excerto

do script)

Recentemente, por ocasião do falecimento de Steve

Jobs**, retomou atualidade um vídeo das palavras que

ele dirigiu a um grupo de graduados da Universidade de

Stanford, em 2005. Fazia um ano que lhe fora

diagnosticado um câncer e mesmo assim, nessa ocasião,

falou com muita autoridade a respeito da vida e da

morte.

Impressionou-me sua afirmação de que ninguém que

morrer e inclusive, dizia, aqueles que desejam ir ao céu

não têm muita pressa para fazê-lo. Entretanto dizia: “A

morte é nosso destino comum; dela ninguém pode

escapar. E assim deve ser, porque a morte é a melhor

invenção da vida; é o agente de mudança da vida.

Elimina o velho e dá lugar à novidade”.

Efetivamente, custa-nos aceitar que, para o novo nascer,

algo tem que morrer. Resistimos à morte.

erhaps that is how Brother Laurence

should be remembered, but I will also

remember him for something he did

but did not know about.

Attorneys sometimes need Attorneys. That means that

sometimes even Attorneys get into trouble and need

their colleagues to help. One such Attorney in Cape

Town sought my help some years ago. The Attorney had

done wrong, professionally. The Attorney had not

stolen or done anything to damage anyone but it was

clear that the Attorney’s conduct had fallen short of our

high ethical standards and it had to follow that the

Attorney needed to be struck off the roll of Attorneys.

That is incredibly harsh because it means that so many

years of study and work are lost in one instant. But, it is

what it is and we all know the consequences of any

misconduct.

I knew that I had to go to Cape Town for an MSC

meeting on a Friday. I got there early and went to see

the Law Society’s Attorney who was intent on striking

my client off the roll. There was no point in me talking

nonsense but I had to do the best for my Attorney. So, I

acknowledged the wrong and pleaded with the Law

Society to give this person one more chance. It sounded

hollow and, in the circumstances, it was.

The Law Society’s Attorney was a decent person but

there was nothing that he could do to prevent the

inevitable.

As I left his office, I, at least knew, that I had done my

best. I shook my colleague’s hand. He was sympathetic

to my client’s cause but he had his duty. In an effort to

be cordial, he asked me why I was in Cape Town. I told

him. It turned out that he was a past pupil of St.

Joseph’s. I asked him if he knew Brother Laurence. His

face changed. Of course he knew him – Brother

Laurence had taught him. He spoke very warmly about

Brother Laurence and the great man that he was. He

spoke of his compassion and many other qualities. He

was quite animated.

I am absolutely convinced that it was this Attorney’s

recollection of one of the things that he had learnt at

the hands of Brother Laurence – forgiveness – that

caused a great change. My client never heard from the

Law Society again. Undoubtedly, the Attorney

persuaded the Law Society to go no further against my

client. It could only have been because of his sudden

recollection of Brother Laurence’s teaching and

compassion – there is simply no other explanation

because until the moment that Brother Laurence’s

name came up, there was a clear determination to

punish my client. My client has learnt from the lesson

and has carried on to be a most useful member of

society but does not know of the role that Brother

Laurence inadvertently played in this reprieve.

Those are my memories.

For me to be affiliated to a

man like this is a great

honour and privilege:

– for him to have been

your Brother is a great

joy.”

IAIN Grieve is an affiliated member of the Institute living in Durban. He did his schooling at St Henry’s Marist

College in Durban, and became an Attorney afterwards. He later headed the Board of Governors of his former

school. In 1999, he was invited to be a founder member of the Marist Schools Council, and has served on the Council

ever since. On hearing of the death of Br Laurence, Iain wrote about the very positive impression our late brother

had made on him over some 17 years, and then continued …

Dear Brothers

udakwashe Shamba is a young

Zimbabwean lad who used to have a

severely disfiguring growth on his head.

But … Good News! As you can see from the

attached picture the operation was successful.

He is still going to the hospital for dressing and

observation. Let us join hands in thanking God

for what He has done in Kudakwashe's life.

Allow me to convey my gratitude, on behalf of

Kudakwashe's family to Bro. Claude Audy and all

our benefactors in South Africa for the great

financial contribution which made the operation

possible. Bro. James Langlois, through his sister

in Canada also assisted financially as there are

still costs to be covered: for check-ups and

further tests to review whether the growth has

been completely arrested. Many thanks to all

who supported this cause financially or through

their prayers.

Kudakwashe is a Montagne of today. And God,

through his loving people, brought back a smile

on this young man's face and great joy to the

family.

Let us continue to pray for a full recovery

Estimados irmãos – Saudaçoes!

udakwashe Shamba é um jovem rapaz

zimbabuense que costumava sofrer de um

crescimento desfigurante em sua cabeça.

Grande Novidade. Como podeis ver nas imagens anexadas, a

operação de kudadwashe Shants foi um sucesso. Ele continua

ir para o hospital fazer curativos pela operação feita

recentemente. Carissimos vamos dar graças a Deus pelo que

fez na vida de Kudakwache.

Em nome da família de kudakwahe pemitam me estender a

minha gratidão, aos irmãos Claude Audy e a todos nossos

benfeitores na Africa do Sul pela contribuição financeira que

fez com que a operação de kudakwashe fosse um sucesso. O

meu agradecimento dirige -se também ao irmão James que

atraves da sua irmã no canada, que além de contribuir pra

uma boa operação, ja provindenciram ajuda financeira para a

revisão nos próximos tempos. O meu muito obrigado a todos

que contribuíram nao so financeiramente mas também com

as suas orações.

Para mim está claro que este rapaz é um Montagne de hoje .

E essa manifestaçao do amor de Deus para com o seu povo ve-

se através do sorriso e alegria desta família.

reetings from the Warm Heart of Africa. I

attach two photos, one of an August session

with aspirants. It all went well and Brothers

requested to provide input responded positively.

The Likuni Community made them feel welcome,

and on some days we shared Mass with the

aspirants.

The other photo shows the writer, a follower of

Champagnat, in his little maize garden trying to

make the community self-reliant in some small

ways. This, I believe all communities can do if they

are not doing so already.

Trusting in one another will make our communities

prosper. Wishing you God's blessings in your

primeira foto foi tirada durante uma sessão com

os aspirantes em agosto. Tudo correu bem e vários

irmãos veio para ajudar. A Comunidade Likuni fez boas-

vindas a todos, e em alguns dias nós compartilhamos a

Missa com os aspirantes.

A outra foto mostra o escritor, um seguidor de

Champagnat, em seu pequeno jardim de milho tentando

fazer a comunidade auto-suficiente em algumas

pequenas maneiras. Este, eu acredito que todas as

comunidades podem fazer, se eles não estão fazendo isso

já.

Confiando um no outro vai fazer nossas comunidades

prosperar. Desejando-lhe bênçãos de Deus em sua

at the funeral of his grandmother-mother.

udo aconteceu no dia 10 de Outubro de

2015, pela 13h10 minutos, no município da

Quibala, província do Kuanza Sul, quando os

Irmãos Tomás e Belmiro viajavam para Ndalatando,

para tratar assuntos relacionados com os irmãos e a

comunidade marista de Ndalatando.

O acidente ocorreu 10 km antes da entrada da sede

municipal da Quibala e, de acordo com as

testemunhas, deveu-se ao estoiro do pneu direito da

frente, que ocasionou o capotamento repetido da

viatura.

De acordo com o relatório médico, o Irmão Belmiro

contraiu um trauma craniano, pois que o mesmo

dirigia a viatura e tenha batido com a cabeça no

volante de direção, como se pode observar pela

quantidade de sangue existente no volante.

O Irmão Tomás, contraiu inúmeras lesões nos

membros inferiores e na bacia, e como

consequência, hemorragias internas nas regiões

afetadas.

Contudo, na tentativa de os salvar –enquanto os

Freys Franciscanos faziam gestões para conseguir a

utilização de um helicóptero para serem evacuados

a Luanda– foram levados pelos Padres da missão da

Quibala para o posto médico da sede municipal,

aproximadamente 40 minutos depois do acidente. 30

Minutos depois da assistência médica, e estando ainda no

posto médico, o Irmão Belmiro veio a falecer. E 30

Minutos depois da morte do Ir. Belmiro, na tentativa de

transferir o Irmão Tomás à sede provincial do Kwanza Sul,

Sumbe, este veio a falecer, ainda pelo caminho entre as

mediações de Quibala e Gabela.

O funeral aconteceu no dia 12 na cidade do Kuito Bié,

começando com o velório no Imne Marista São José a

partir das 8 horas, seguido da missa dos corpos presentes

às 10 horas, na sé catedral, presidida por Dom José

Nambi, Bispo da diocese, cocelebrada por Dom Xingo Ya

Hombo (Bispo emérito da Diocese de Mbanza Congo),

sacerdotes da diocese local, sacerdotes da diocese de

Huambo e religiosos de várias congregações e ordens

religiosas.

O enterro foi no cemitério municipal do kuito Bié na

propriedade da Diocese, e contou com a presença dos

irmãos Maristas em Angola, dos 34 juvenistas, de muitos

religiosos e religiosas pertencentes a várias congregações

religiosas, e dos familiares do Ir. Tomás (É de fazer notar

que o Bispo do Kuito Bié é tio do Ir. Tomás). Fez-se

presente o Governador Provincial do Bié e seu elenco.

Inconsoláveis estiveram também membros de toda a

família marista: professores, alunos, ex-alunos,

benfeitores, membros do Movimento Champagnat da

Família Marista, membros do Jumar, amigos, conhecidos

e o povo em geral. Aproximadamente 5.000 pessoas.

Ao final da Celebração leram-se várias mensagens

emotivas por parte das autoridades provinciais do Ensino,

dos alunos, dos professores, dos juvenistas, dos religiosos

e religiosas e dos Padres diocesanos. Finalmente o Ir.

Jesus Sanchez agradeceu, em nome da Congregação, a

presença e solidariedade e carinho de todos.

Entre as qualidades e atitudes dos dois Irmãos que se

salientaram nas mensagens,

Do Ir. Belmiro: A sua bondade e simplicidade, o seu amor

à vocação marista, a sua entrega incondicional e a sua

dedicação ao cultivo da terra. Ele tinha manifestado o seu

desejo de morrer num sábado – como os primeiros

Irmãos-

Do Ir. Tomás: A sua alegria contagiante, a sua facilidade

para fazer amigos, a sua fidelidade e o seu sentido da

responsabilidade.

he accident took place at about 13h10 on

Saturday 10 October 2015. Brothers Tomás

and Belmiro were on their way to Ndalatando

community, to deal with some matters concerning

the brothers there.

The accident happened 10 km before the small town

of Quibala. According to some witnesses, it was the

bursting of the right front tyre that caused the car to

overturn several times.

According to a medical officer, Br. Belmiro was

driving. His head wound was caused by a clash with

the steering wheel, which was covered in blood. Br.

Tomás on the other hand, had many major leg

wounds, as well three major wounds to his lower

torso causing much internal bleeding.

About 40 minutes after the accident, - while the

Franciscan Fathers at the Quibala mission tried to

procure a helicopter to fly them to Luanda - they

were taken to the medical centre In Quibala. Br.

Belmiro passed away about thirty minutes after the

emergency treatment applied by the nurses at the

hospital. About 30 minutes later, Br. Tomás died

near Gabela while he was being transferred to

Sumbe, provincial capital of Kwanza Sul.

The funeral took place in Kuito Bié on Monday 12

October, starting with a viewing of the body at the

IMNE Marista São José at 8 a.m., followed at 10 a.m.

by the funeral Mass in the cathedral concelebrated

by the local Bishop José Nambi and Rev. Xingo Ya

Hombo (emeritus Bishop of Mbanza Congo). Many

priests both diocesan and religious attended

(including some from Huambo) as well as religious

from several congregations.

The burial took place at the diocesan plot in the

municipal cemetery after a long procession from the

cathedral. The mourners included the Marist

Brothers in Angola, 34 aspirants, and family

members of Br Tomás (the local Bishop was an uncle of

Tomás). The Provincial Governor of Bié and his entourage

were also present. The entire Marist family was in grief:

teachers, pupils, former students, benefactors, members

of the Champagnat Movement of the Marist Family,

members of Jumar, friends, acquaintance, and the local

people in general. Approximately 5000 in all.

The proceedings concluded with messages of sympathy

from the provincial educational authorities, students,

teachers, aspirants, men and women religious, and

diocesan priests. Finally, on behalf of the Institute, Bro.

Jesus Sánchez thanked all those present for their

solidarity and affection of all.

Among the qualities and attitudes of the two brothers

that stood out in the messages:

Br. Belmiro: His kindness and simplicity, his love for his

Marist vocation, his unconditional commitment, and his

dedication working in the garden. He had expressed his

desire to die on a Saturday, just like the early Brothers.

Br. Tomás: His contagious joy, his facility in making

friends, his loyalty, and his sense of responsibility.

Ir. Belmiro em anos passados. Quanto aos funerais e sepultamento do Ir. Belmiro: ele

falou duas vezes comigo sobre o assunto. Parece que estava adivinhando que algo poderia lhe acontecer algum tinha mais alguém comigo que não lembro quem foi. Mas na segunda vez, foi durante um retiro de final de ano em Veranópolis, quando veio falar comigo e partilhar sua vida, sua experiência espiritual e missionária longamente. Foi quando me disse mais ou menos de modo literal: “Quero que meus ossos sejam enterrados em Angola.”

Naquele momento, para mim tinha o significado de que amava muito a missão que desempenhava em Angola. Isto era visível, pois seus olhos brilhavam quando falava disto. Falou com tanta convicção de sua opção pelas missões que a ele não importava muito o estado de saúde que à época, já tinha alguns sinais de fragilidade. Eis um exemplo de alguém que amou e dedicou a vida pela gente de Angola. Não mediu esforços. Não levou em conta sua saúde já frágil. Mesmo querendo dissuadi-lo da ideia, era inútil argumentar qualquer coisa. Dizia: "eles precisam de minha presença".

Fica o legado um irmão que viveu sua consagração de modo integral. Abandonou sua vida nas mão do Criador em favor do menos favorecidos. Viveu de forma alegre, entusiasta apaixonante. Viveu com "paixão por Deus" e "compaixão pelos outros”. É a figura do encontro da samaritana com Jesus (Jo 4) e do samaritano que ajuda e tem compaixão do caído à beira da estrada (Lc 10). (Ir. n two occasions in the past,

Br Belmiro spoke to me about his own death and funeral. It

seemed that he sensed something would happen in the near future. I don’t recall details of the first occasion, only the second one. It was during an end-of-year retreat at Veranópolis. He came to see me and chatted at length, sharing his life, his spiritual experiences, and his missionary work. Almost word for word, he indicated that “my bones should be

interred in Angola.”

It was then that I realised how much he loved the mission he was fulfilling in Angola. His eyes were shining as he spoke with firm conviction of his wish to continue his mission. The fragility of his health was of no concern to him. He truly loved the people of Angola and was willing to give his life for them. He didn’t mind the struggle that he would have to make to continue working there: his poor health was of no concern. Trying to dissuade him from staying on, by offering him health care in Brazil was useless. He would simply repeat: “They need me over there.”

He leaves behind a legacy of firm commitment to his consecration, abandoning himself to into the hands of his creator for the sake of the least favoured. His was life lived out with joy, with enthusiasm, with passion: “passion for God” and “compassion for others”. He mirrored the life of the Samaritan woman at the well (Jn 4), and of the Samaritan who took pity on the man who was left for dead on the side of the road (Lk 10). sobre um colega, um amigo, um Irmão, um

confidente e um “tio”. Encontrei o Tomás pela

primeira vez no MIC, em 2001. Imediatamente

ficamos amigos. De fato, ele me chamava “Família”,

coisa verdadeira, pois realmente ele era família para

mim. Isso era um pouco particular e estranho porque

ele fez o seu noviciado no Brasil e eu fiz o meu em

Kutama, no Zimbábue.

Escrevo com o coração partido e com lágrimas nos

olhos por que Tomás para mim era um Irmão e um

amigo. Ele adorava ser marista, era orgulhoso de ser

marista, tinha paixão em ser um Irmão. Sua grande

inclinação ao serviço e a dedicação em comportar-se

com responsabilidade foi vista no MIC, onde servia a

comunidade como motorista.

Era um histórico e amava seus livros. Tinha um grande

senso de humor e tinha a capacidade de criar

momentos iluminados especialmente durante

discussões difíceis nos Encontros do Conselho.

Quando a ocasião pedia seriedade, ele era sério.

Algumas vezes me chamou a atenção em relação a

certos problemas; ele sabia como admoestar

eficazmente um Irmão. Sua índole de liderança era

grande e isso se mostrava na capacidade que tinha de

repartir tarefas com as pessoas e tirar o melhor delas.

Não almejava cargos, por exemplo, quando estava

para deixar seu papel como diretor.

Eu lembro quando faleceu meu pai em 2002. O Ir. Joe

McKee, atual vigário geral e então reitor do MIC,

disse-me que o tempo por si mesmo não cura, mas dá

forças para convivermos com o fato que as pessoas

que amamos não estão mais conosco. Penso que é

isso que o tempo fará nesse caso.

Tomei café com o Tomás no aeroporto de

Johanesburgo há duas semanas atrás. Isso se revelou

um adeus.

Tomás era Tomás: conseguia contagiar as pessoas,

quase uma contaminação de impacto positivo sobre

elas. Sobretudo para mim ele era Tomás, um grande

amigo, um Irmão, um confidente e um “tio”.

Descansa em paz, querido “Comrade”. Adeus. Vou

sempre recordar os bons momentos que tivemos

juntos e agradeço a São Marcelino por me ter dado

um amigo e um Irmão em Tomás.

"Família" which was true, he was family to me. This

was a bit unique and strange because he had done

his novitiate in Brazil and I had done mine at Kutama,

Zimbabwe.

I write with a heavy heart and tearful eyes because to

me Tomás was a Brother and a friend. He loved being

Marist, he was proud to be Marist, he had passion to

be a Brother. His great sense of service and

dedication to duty with responsibility was seen at

MIC where he served the community as a driver.

He was a historian par excellence and loved his

books. He had a great sense of humour and was able

to create light moments especially during tough

discussions at Council Meetings. When times called

for seriousness, he would be serious. A couple of

times he challenged me on certain issues and he

knew how to positively reprimand a Brother. His

leadership skills were great as he believed in

delegating people and brought out the best in others.

He had no desire to cling to positions, for example,

when he was getting ready to leave his post as

Principal.

I remember when I lost my dad in 2002, Bro. Joe

McKee VG (then rector at MIC) told me that time

does not heal per se but it gives us the strength to be

able to live with the fact that our loved ones are no

more with us. I think this is what time will do in this

case.

I had breakfast with Tomás at O.R. Tambo airport in

Jo’burg two weeks ago and it has turned out to be a

farewell meal.

Tomás was Tomás: he had an effect on people, an

almost infectious positive impact on people. Above

all for me he was Tomás, a great friend, a Brother, a

confidante and an "uncle".

Rest in peace dear “Comrade”, fare thee well. I will

always cherish the good moments we had and am

grateful to St. Marcellin because

he gave me a friend and a Brother

in Tomás.
