Let me elaborate on "quiser" a bit. A disclaimer first: You do not need any of thisin your first 3 months of Portuguese. It may help though in not being puzzled by

    what others are saying.

Independently of the tense of the verb (past, future, etc.), Portuguese has two"moods" for the verbs; indicative (normal, matter-of-factual) and subjunctive(tentative, conditional). You can get away with only the indicative mood in manysituations, so the extra effort of learning the subjunctive mood may not bewarranted in the beginning.

There are 3 common tenses used in the subjunctive mood. I'll only talk hereabout the future tense since "quiser" is future subjunctive. The most common useof the future subjunctive is in the if statement. When you say "if you go to Brazil, you will have a good time," the verb "go" is in the subjunctive mood because it is

an assumption; not a statement of fact. Similarly, "if you want" is in thesubjunctive mood.

    8

  • 7/27/2019 LIES DO CURSO PIMSLEUR - I - II e III

    9/17

There is actually a semantic role for the use of the subjunctive. When youtranslate "If he accepts,..." you could say "se ele aceitar,..." (subjunctive) or "seele aceita, ..." (indicative). The former implies that you don't know if he willaccept or not. The latter implies that it has been established that he does accept, and now you are talking about the consequences. A bit subtle, but I find rather

    pretty.

Most verbs are conjugated in a simple way to get the future subjunctive. Just usethe infinitive (ficar, pagar, beber) as is (with eu, voce, ele, and ela). However, there are irregular verbs that do not follow the rule, and querer is one of them. Itbecomes quiser in the future subjunctive. It is an additional pain in the neck toremember the irregular conjugations. Unfortunately, the irregular verbs areamong the most commonly used verbs (if it weren't the case, the nativeswouldn't remember the irregular conjugations ). BTW, "if it weren't" is in thesubjunctive mood in English .

translators had this as vive, Pimsluer uses morar. When I put mora into the Altavista

translator it came back as "But I know where it deferred payment")

    12. Where does he live? - onde ele mora?

    13. Which is his address - qual seu endereo?

    14. He lives far away - Ele mora longe

    15. Is it located far away? - Fica longe?16. It is close - Fica perto

    17. On Cabral street - na rua cabral

    18. That street is far from here - Essa rua fica longe daqui

    20. What is the doctor's name - Como mdico se chama?

    21. What is your name? - Como voc se chama?

    22. My name is John - Eu me chamo John.

    23. I live - Eu moro

Here is a long answer to the morar versus viver issue:

There are several examples of English-to-Portuguese translations that are 2-to-1 or 1-

to-2. An example of 2-to-1 is "do" and "make" both translating to "fazer". A 2-to-1 is

not a problem for an English speaker learning Portuguese because, in some sense, you

get two words for the price of one . You do lose a bit of expressive power, though.

A 1-to-2 is a problem, since you typically confuse the two translations because you

initially are not used to the two different "shades" of the meaning. The most

troublesome example of 1-to-2 is "to be" translating into "estar" (as in eu estou) and

    "ser" (as in eu sou).

The example at hand is "to live" translating into "morar" and "viver". "morar" has thelimited connotation of "to reside" while "viver" has the wider connotations of living.

Therefore, "I live in an apartment" translates well into "Eu moro num apartamento",

but "I live to travel" would be "Eu vivo pra viajar", not "Eu moro pra viajar".

By the same token, a 1-to-2 has the beneft of more expressive power. After using the

two words for a while, it will dawn upon you that there are really two distinct

meanings that English speakers merge in the verb "to live".

    1. I can write - Eu posso escrever2. This way - por aqui3. Go on this way - siga por aqui

Comment about "para aprender (I am not hearing the (A) in aprender. It sounds like

    just prender."

Actually, the "a" you are not hearing is the last "a" of para, not the "a" of aprender. In

spoken Portuguese, when two vowels meet in this way, the second vowel takes over

(in continuous speech). For instance, para observar (in order to observe) would sound

    like "parobservar".
