Western cowboy culture. Every May,Del Rios Val Verde County Fairgroundshost the popular George Paul MemorialBull Riding competition. A tradition formore than 30 years, it is the oldestcontinuous bull r iding competition inthe world. In addition to this bull riding

event, there are rodeos featuring steerropers, barrel racers and a daredevilmotorcycle jump over the Bad CompanyRodeo trailer.

Del Rio native Houston Hutto beganroping calves as a child and went on tobecome a national champion. He hasbeen competing professionally a ll overthe United States and Canada for thelast eight years, but Hutto has fondmemories of his hometown.

I lived in Del Rio until I was about 21,

and I grew up on a ranch. My dad andgranddad both rodeoed, so I didnt reallyhave a choice, Hutto jokes. Some of thebest things about Del Rio are the lake andthe hunting they have big whitetaildeer. Everybody is real ly friendly theres just good people down there.

Sportsmen f lock to area ranchessuch as Indianhead Ranch and DeadMans Pass Ranch, which specialize inhunting packages. Whitetail deer, rams,blue quail, Rio Grande turkeys and feralhogs are just of few of the animalspopular with hunters in Del Rio.

national attention for its ancient rockart, which dates back as far as 4,000years. The rock art f indings have

attracted archeologists from around theworld, and they are being studied at theShumla School Inc., a nonprofitarcheological research and educationcenter in nearby Comstock.

There are hundreds of rock art sitesin the Del R io area, and new ones arebeing discovered each year, says Dr.Carolyn Boyd, executive director of theShumla School. The oldest rock art,called Pecos River style, containsimages of human-like forms, animals

and all k inds of enigmatic imagery.These rock art panels are sometimesover 100 feet long and over 20 feet tall.They are painted in an array of earthcolors red, yellow, black, orange andwhite. A lot of the panels requirednative peoples to construct ladders

and scaffolding.The Shumla School records the rock

art through photography, i llustrationsand 3-D laser mapping. Since 2009,Shumla has archived more than 10,000photos and illustrated more than 1,500images. The school is always in need ofvolunteers to help with recording therock art.

Numerous famous rock art expertshave said the rock art here is second tonone in the world, Boyd says. In my

travels abroad, I am often surprised tofind t here seem to be more peopleoverseas who know about our art thanpeople in our own community. I wasjust interviewed by Discovermagazine,and they are doing a feature about itin summer 2011. I think Del Rio wil lsee a tremendous increase in tourismas a result of increased awarenessabout the art.

moved to Comstock in 2003 to run theShumla School.

We love it here. It really still has thatWild West feel, she says. The people arefabulous, the landscape is breathtakingand the history is remarkable. Whatmore could a person ask for?

el io ad AcuaLocated six miles away and just

across the border from Del Rio is theMexican city of Acua. There is a strongrelationship between the t wo cities thatextends from government off icials toresidents who cross the border to bothwork and play.

Del Rio is really nice for raising afamily. We havent had any majornegative incidents like other cities, andthe lake benefits both sides of the borderby bringing in tourists, says JorgeRamon, economic development directorfor the city of Acua. I actually l ive onboth sides of the border, working inMexico during the week and living inDel Rio on weekends. I have three kids,and the quality of life is real ly nice inDel Rio. We also like visiting myparents, who live in Del Rio.

Local businesses such as Del RioFeed & Supply and Plaza Del Sol Mallhave benefited from being near theborder, and Del Rio has been known to

give support to Mexican towns. Del Rioand Acua enjoy a great relationshipand have partnered to help the regionappeal to newcomers.

The two mayors meet to discussissues, and the two cities work togetheron prospects on both sides of theborder, Ramon says. Its a really nicerelationship. We have internationalevents together. And a lot of ourpopulation shops in Del Rio, whichbenefits their economy.

A city of 160,000 people, Acua is

home to 70 industrial companies basedin the United States. Roughly 2,500 oftheir 35,000 total employees live in DelRio and work in Acua, crossing theborder every day to get to and from work.

It only takes about five minutesto get across the border here, or 30minutes if youre in a large exportingtruck, Ramon says. Its fast and easycompared with other places along theborder.

Originally opened during World WarII, Laughlin AFB became a prestigiousStrategic Air Command base in 1957and then a pilot training facility in1962. Though its mission is to getundergraduate pilots for the UnitedStates and allied nations mission-ready, Laughlin has been an integralpart in shaping Del Rios economy andplayed a significant role in developingthe citys personality.

In a lot of ways, Del Rio is what it isbecause of Laughlin Air Force Base,says Sid Cauthorn, president and CEO ofThe Bank & Trust. Its a veryimportant part of our community.

employment for 1,436 others. Laughlinspayroll was nearly $96 million, and thebase provided a total estimated economicimpact of more than $217 million.

Bank & Trust since 1993, says there is avalue to Laughlin that goes beyond merenumbers. The base also has a cultural

impact on Del Rio, from the popular airshow held there each year to the nationalinfluence Laughlin provides.

The people at Laughlin come infrom all over the country, Cauthornnotes. While people serve at Laughlin,they become a part of our home. Theyare friends, neighbors and citizens thatbring a diversity to our community thatwe all enjoy. From their specialized ski llsets to their signif icant economicimpact, Del Rio would not be the samewithout our friends at Laughlin AirForce Base.

These people support a lot of localrestaurants and businesses in town.Hardware stores and auto parts storesdo real well here, because a lot of thoseAir Force people work on their carsand homes.

The Del Rio Chamber of Commercehas long recognized the importance ofLaughlin. The Chamber fought to keepthe base open in 1962 when facing

closure. In 1975 it formed the MilitaryAffairs Association to promote the bondbetween the community and the base.

worked at closed, Julio tried to

Through the Lens

Ever since I was little I have

been fascinated with planes. My

dad would take me to the airport

to watch planes take off and land,

I would build models, watch

endless hours of documentaries

on planes of all kinds, and I also

flew in them. So when I saw that I

got to photograph at Laughlin Air

Force Base for Images Del Rio, I

was very excited. My chaperonesaid I was like a kid in a candy

store while I took these pictures.

I hope you enjoy looking at them
