The 2019 Global Council held 17–20 March in Tokyo, Japan held true to its promise to offer a platform for IIA Affiliate leaders from around the world to contribute insights that help shape the future of our global organization and profession, network with their peers, and exchange leading practices for Affiliate growth and sustainability.

This year’s event was especially meaningful as it is the last official “Global Council” before the transition to Global Assembly in 2020 under the new IIA governance structure. While the transition was one of the topics of discussion during the March 17–20 gathering, other topics included identifying elements necessary to enhance The IIA’s position on the Three Lines of Defense and defining content needs of members through the Global Content Strategy

The Program

The IIA’s Global Chairman of the Board Naohiro Mouri presided over Global Council meetings held at the Hilton Tokyo Odaiba which started with a roll call of Affiliates in attendance, followed by a warm welcome to Tokyo by IIA–Tokyo’s chairman of the board of IIA Japan, Kazuhiko Fushiya-San.

Breakout Discussion Sessions, facilitated by members of The IIA’s Executive Committee and IIA Global Headquarters staff, were focused on gathering input and feedback on key topics such as the Global Assembly, Three Lines of Defense, and the Global Content Strategy.

Several past IIA global board members were present to share the latest on key global strategic initiatives such the global operating model and the global nominating committee. The IIA’s CEO and President Richard Chambers presented on internal audit and disruption then facilitated a panel discussion on Trends and Opportunities for the internal audit profession in 2019 and beyond.

Networking and exchange opportunities started with an ice-breaking game held at the Welcome Reception and continued throughout the event with two engaging Knowledge Exchange Sessions: a Speed Networking session that gave Affiliates ample opportunities to interact one-on-one, and an IIA Trade Show where IIA Global headquarters staff hosted four concurrent session on valuable IIA products and services including: global training programs and services, global certifications and qualifications, global advocacy, and legal.

Prior to Global Council, more than 35 delegates from among smaller and emerging Affiliates participated in an optional half-day Affiliate Management Workshop where they learned how the CIA exam is changing and tools available to help market CIA in their respective region, develop a local advocacy strategy to

captivate stakeholders, and how to maximize affiliation with IIA Global to increase revenue and add membership value.

The cultural evening and dinner hosted by IIA–Japan at Happoen Gardens featured dynamic show complete with samurai and geishas. To end the event, participants visited the historic city of Kamakura where they visited multiple sites including the Tsurugaoka Hachimangū Shrine, Komachi Street, and Hasedera Temple.
