®™Trademark of The Dow Chemical Company (“Dow”) or an affiliated company of Dow

Molybdenum and Rhenium recovery
• Molybdenum is extracted from the ore by roasting of MoS2 to MoO3and then to molybdates, MoO4
2- which then can be recovered by aSBA resin in the Cl- form. Elution is performed with 8% NaOHsolution. The resin is put back to the Cl- form before loading
• Rhenium forms the volatile Re2O7 which by scrubbing with watergives HReO4, which is fixed on a WBA resin from where it isrecovered as the ammonium salt.
®™Trademark of The Dow Chemical Company (“Dow”) or an affiliated company of Dow
Tungsten recovery
• In the treatment of tungsten ores tungsten is found as WO42-
• SBA resins can be used to recover W from various streams.
®™Trademark of The Dow Chemical Company (“Dow”) or an affiliated company of Dow
Gallium
• Gallium is a by-product of the Aluminum industry. It is extractedfrom the Bayer liquor by either SX or IER
• SX uses Kelex 100 which is a 8-quinolinol derivative: 7-(4 ethyl-1-methyloctyl)-8-quinolinol. The stripping agent is H2SO4 or HCl
• The Al/Ga ratio is 3000 in the ore (bauxite), 260 in the Bayer liquorand it becomes about 1 in the extract of the SX.
®™Trademark of The Dow Chemical Company (“Dow”) or an affiliated company of Dow
and it becomes about 1 in the extract of the SX.
Gallium (cont.)
• Two IER have been studied for the recovery of Ga from the Bayerliquor:• A SIR with Kelex 100 as the adsorbed solvent
• A chelating resin having amidoxime functional groups (Duolite ES 346)
• HCl or H2SO4 is used as eluant
• SIR have higher capacity and longer life time than the amidoxime
®™Trademark of The Dow Chemical Company (“Dow”) or an affiliated company of Dow
• SIR have higher capacity and longer life time than the amidoximeresins but they are significantly more expensive.
Rare Earths
• Rare Earths (RE) can be separated using SAC resins. Theseparation is achieved using carboxylated complexing agents suchas ethylene-diaminetetraacetate (EDTA) and hydroxyethylene-diaminetriacetate (HEDTA)
• RE show different affinities for these complexing agents due totheir different ionic radius
