In educational environments, virtual teachers guide the students in online interactive experiences (Shaw, E. and Johnson,1999).
In the ecommerce world, reports state that virtual characters can make online retailers increase their profits in up to three times (Wallace, 2000) .
Research results have also been demonstrating the benefits of such characters, especially on what motivation is concerned (Lester et al., 1997).
Craig et al. (2002) showed how the interaction with animated and static virtual characters could affect students’ learning.
Rickenberg and Reeves (2000) showed that the presence of a character in a website could increase the user’s confidence.
De Angeli et al. (2001) also present arguments supporting the use of virtual characters. The authors mention that by introducing social stimuli, virtual characters may improve the communication between user and computer.
André et al. (1999) verified that students considered the subject studied significantly less difficult and the presentation more entertaining in the presence of a virtual character.
Moreno and Mayer (1999) demonstrated that the inclusion of a pedagogical agent had a positive effect on students’ interest and transfer.
