    flashed on certain 120M, 12M, 140M, 160M, 14M, 16M, and 24M MotorGraders.

The additional temperature sensor along with the current hydraulic oiltemperature sensor provides hydraulic system temperature feedback to theoperator for both the hydraulic oil temperature and steering cylinderoil temperature.

The secondary steering system needs to be inspected on certain 12M,120M, 140M, 160M, 14M and 16M Motor Graders. The existing SecondarySteering Harness can have the solenoid wires inverted. If these wiresare inverted when the machine is operating in secondary steering modethe steering system will steer backwards. This failure will result inthe machine steering in the opposite direction to that requested by theoperator.

Certain Transmission ECM harnesses may need to have an A/C wirerelocated. The current placement of the wire could cause the

Transmission ECM to reset and the parking brake to automatically apply.

    Software improvements are listed below.

Steering: - A modification has been made to the steering oil temperature monitoringstrategy. The strategy will now be based on the type of hydraulic oilthat is installed in the machine. - A modification has been made to give the ability to select the type ofhydraulic oil that is installed in the machine using CAT ET. - Selected hydraulic oil type may now be viewed through the MessengerSystem.

    - Steering oil temperature along with the hydraulic oil temperature maynow be viewed through the Messenger System. - A modification to the joystick angle to wheel angle has been made. Thetransition point of 34 km/h (21 mph) has been removed and the amount ofjoystick travel required at high speeds has been reduced.

Failure to apply the above changes in this service letter may create arisk of injury or death.

Refer to Service Magazine "Improved Monitoring System Is Now Used forthe Steering System on M - Series Motor Graders" for further informationon the changes to the cold steering system oil strategy. Refer to Service Magazine "New Software Is Now Used for the SteeringSystem on M - Series Motor Grader" for further information on the changesto the joystick angle to wheel angle.

Engine: A modification has been made to the ether strategy. Previous softwareallowed ether to be injected when cycling the key directly to the startposition regardless of whether ether was required or not.

Transmission (14M/16M Only): - A modification has been made to add underspeed protection. If theengine drops below 800 rpm under a heavy load, the transmission willautomatically downshift to prevent transmission damage.

    AFFECTED PRODUCT

    - A modification has been made to the park brake test. The improved testwill automatically shift the transmission from 5th gear to neutral afterthe engine speed has been lugged back to a speed that adequately teststhe park brake.

Transmission (16M only): - A modification has been made to certain shift parameters.

Refer to Service Magazine "New Software For the Power Train is NowAvailable For certain Motor Graders" for further information on thechanges to the transmission software.

ordering the total number of parts neededto satisfy the program lies with thedealer.

Note: Ensure that all applicable portions of this rework are performed.

Groups 2 -8Check the secondary steering system by referring to the appropriateOperation and Maintenance Manual "Secondary Steering Test". Note thatwhile the secondary steering test switch is depressed the secondarysteering pump is providing pressure and the secondary steering valve iscontrolling flow to the steering cylinders.

If the machine passes the secondary steering test, and the wheels steerin the direction requested, no further action is required. If themachine fails the test and the wheels do not move in the directionrequested perform the rework procedure listed below.

NOTE: New machine flash files are released periodically. Ensure you areusing the latest flash files by downloading the files from SISWeb.

NOTE: The Transmission/Chassis, and Implement #1 can be flashed over theJ1939 Data Link. The Messenger ECM is flashed over CDL.

Use Cat Electronic Technician service tool version 2009C or later to

flash the software below in the order listed: - Flash Implement #1 ECM with 351 - 4533 flash file. - Flash the Transmission/Chassis ECM with 352 - 5716 flash file. - Flash 160M Engine ECM with 352 - 4697 flash file.

After the flashing the above ECMs, start the machine, and verify all ECMsystems are functional and delete all diagnostic and event codes.

Using Caterpillar Electronic Technician, check the Transmission ECMserial number which will be displayed on the main screen. If theTransmission ECM Serial Number ends in MS, no further action isrequired. If the Transmission ECM Serial Number ends in JT or IS performthe rework listed below for groups 1 - 10.

Using Caterpillar Electronic Technician, configure the hydraulic oilviscosity type that is installed on the machine. Please refer to Service Magazine Article "A New Parameter Is Now Usedfor Selecting the Hydraulic Oil Type on M - Series Motor Grader" forfurther instructions on configuring the hydraulic oil viscosity type.

Ensure that the operator understands each change prior to releasing themachine back into service. Refer to Service Magazines "Improved

Monitoring System Is Now Used for the Steering System on M - Series MotorGraders", "New Power Train Software is Now Available For Certain MotorGraders" and "New Software Is Now Used for the Steering System on M -Series Motor Grader" for all information regarding changes. Prior toreleasing the machine back into service place printed copy of the threeservice mags on the seat of the cab.

    Graders

    Dear Caterpillar Product Owner:

A temperature sensor needs to be installed and new software needs tobe flashed on the machines listed above.

The additional temperature sensor along with the current hydraulictank oil temperature sensor provides hydraulic system temperaturefeedback to the operator for both the hydraulic oil tank temperatureand steering cylinder oil temperature.

In addition to the temperature sensor, the secondary steering systemneeds to be inspected on certain 12M, 120M, 140M, 160M, 14M and 16MMotor Graders. The existing Secondary Steering Harness can have thesolenoid wires inverted. If these wires are inverted when themachine is operating in secondary steering mode the steering systemwill steer backwards. This failure will result in the machinesteering in the opposite direction to that requested by theoperator.

Also the transmission ECM harnesses may need to have an AirConditioner wire relocated. The current placement of the wire couldcause the Transmission ECM to reset and parking brake toautomatically apply.

    Software improvements are listed below.

Steering: - A modification has been made to the cold hydraulic oil warningstrategy. The cold hydraulic oil strategy will now be based on thetype of hydraulic oil that is installed in the machine and can beviewed through the Messenger System.- A modification to the joystick angle to wheel angle has been made. The transition point of 34 km/h (21 mph) has been removed and theamount of joystick travel required at high speeds has been reduced.

Failure to apply the above changes may result in personal injury ordeath.

You will not be charged for the service performed.

Contact your local Caterpillar dealer immediately to schedule thisservice. The dealer will advise you of the time required to completethis service.

Please refer the dealer to their Service Letter dated 02Dec2009 whenscheduling this service.

We regret the inconvenience this may cause you, but urge you to havethis service performed for your added safety and satisfaction.
