This course aims to discuss the concept of European citizenship against the backdrop of global contemporary politics. The course shall provide an overview of the main historical and institutional developments of the European project with a view to discuss present and future concerns, such as:

-  European democracy, political representation and democratic deficit;

-  The politicization of the European Union;

-  Law-making in an European context;

-  The role of nations in a post-national political system;

-  Integration, cosmopolitanism and European identity;

-  The Eurozone crisis and the economic and political challenges to the European Union in a global world.

Programa (1000 caracteres): Syllabus (1000 caracteres)::Este Curso pretende que os alunos adquiram conhecimentos sobre o funcionamento da UE, a sua importância, e implicações para a mudança política, económica, social, e cultural na Europa, e para a cidadania euroipeia. Assim sendo, será organizada em torno de várias secções que irão ilustrar a importancia desta nova construção bem como os desafios com que os europeus se defrontam hoje em dia. As secções propostas são as seguintes:1)A arquitectura institucional/política da ue;2)os desafios da relação entre a ue e os estados membros;3)a formação de uma identidade europeia e de uma cidadania europeia;4)a Crise da eurozona e as implicações para o futuro da europa;5)o lugar da Europa no mundo.Cada secção incluirá duas ou três aulas onde o foco será em temas especificos considerados relavantes. É favor consultar o documento em anexo com o plano curricular completo do curso.

This course aims to provide students with knowledge on the workings of the EU, its importance and implications for the political, economic, social and cultural change in Europe, and for European citizenship. As such, it will be organised around several sections which will illustrate the pervasive importance of this novel construct as well as the challenges ahead for Europeans. The proposed sections are the following:1)the political/institutional architecture of the EU;2)the evolving challenges to the EU’s relationship with Member-states and Citizens; 3)the formation of a European identity and a European citizenship;4)the Eurozone crisis and its implications for the future of Europe;5)Europe’s place in the world.Each section will comprise of two to three classes, where the focus will be on specific topics which are relevant. Please consult the document which is annexed, containing a more complete syllabus for the course.

Os objectivos da unidade curricular foram tidos em consideração quando desenhamos o curso, nomeadamente as secções e os temas a desenvolver. Estamos interessados em promover o conhecimento dos alunos sobre os seguintes temas: as dinâmicas essenciais históricas e políticas do desenvolvimento da ue, bem como dos desafios e debates atuais na ue hoje. Essencialmente, o curso irá focar as instituições e os desafios políticos, a opinião pública, as atitudes a cidadania e a identidade europeia; políticas chave tais como a política monetária europeia e a crise do euro; e o lugar da ue no mundo.Assim sendo, o curso servirá para promover a compreensão da forma como a globalização e a integração europeia teve um impacto profundo na forma como as democracias europeias tomam decisões, e os estados e os cidadãos se comportam.

The Curricular unit’s objectives were taken into consideration when designing the course, the sections and the topics to be developed. We are interested in providing the students with the basic dynamics of the history and politics of the european union. Then, we will introduce current challenges and debates which are important for the eu today. Essentially, the course will focus on institutions and political challenges; on public opinion, attitudes citizenship and european identity; on key policies such as european monetary union and the euro crsis; and on the eu’s role in the world.The course will serve to understand the way in which globalisation and ever closer union has had a profound effect in the way european democracies make decisions, and european states and citizens behave.

Processo de ensino-aprendizagem (500 caracteres):

Teaching methodology:A Unidade Curricluar desenvolve-se em torno da discussão crítica de leituras bibliográficas, bem como de exposição por parte do professor. Os estudantes devem ser capazes de iniciar a discussão sobre os textos pelo menos uma vez no curso, alem de participarem nas aulas. Todos os alunos devem ler os textos designados para cada aula, bem como de saber dar a sua opinião no debate que se irá seguir.

Em cada aula, haverá uma ou duas apresentações por parte dos alunos de leituras que serão disponibilizadas antecipadamente a todos. Essas apresentaçoes devem ser acompanhadas de um documento de 1-2 páginas que resume a apresentação ou em alternativa um powerpoint. Segue-se um debate onde todos devem participar. Haverá duas frequências, uma a meio do curso e outra no final, e os alunos deverão também entregar um paper final (8-10 páginas para os alunos de licenciatura, e 15-20 páginas para os alunos de pós-graduação). O paper sera entregue em duas partes: numa primeira fase apenas o resumo e a bibliografia escolhida (cerca de 3 páginas) e na segunda fase o paper final.

The course will revolve around the critical discussion and analysis of assigned readings, as well as presentations by the lecturer. Students will be expected to serve as discussion leaders at least once, in addition to attending and participating in class. All students are expected to have read the assigned readings prior to class and will frequently be called upon to discuss their interpretations of the readings.

Discussants will be our in-class experts on a particular reading. Besides the required readings, they will be assigned one or two "extra" readings per class and will present a brief oral synopsis of their particular reading (along with a written “bullet” summary of 1-2 pages to be handed out in class or a PowerPoint presentation). They will then field questions from their classmates and be responsible for their special area of expertise. Besides a mid-term and a final exam, students must also write an 8-10 page research paper (undergraduate) or 15-20 page paper (graduate) on a topic of mutual interest. The paper will be submitted in two stages, the first of which will be an outline of topic and an annotated bibliography (roughly 3 pages); the second of which is the final paper.

As metodologias de aprendizagem irão priveligiar a leitura da bibliografia e a sua discussão no centro do curso. Assim sendo, os estudantes irão aprendendo ao longo do curso tanto através das suas apresentações como da dos colegas. Os alunos irão adquirir também competências na comunicação oral e escrita de argumentos sobre as questões europeias. Serão escolhidos textos que foquem os temas dos objectvos da unidade curricular por forma a assegurar que são esses os temas que os alunos irão aprender ao longo do curso.

The teaching methodologies will place the Reading of the bibliography and its discussion at the centre of the course. As such, students will learn each topic, both through their study and the in-class presentations, allowing them to learn as they go along, and become experts on the topic as the course progresses. They will also become profficient in communicating ideas with others, and learning on the topic from them. The papers to be discussed correspond to the intended topics of learning, to ensure that those are the main topics learnt by students.

Observações: Observations:Será organizada uma visita ao parlamento europeu para os estudantes contactarem com as instituições da UE.

I will also organize a visit to the European parliament representation in lisbon so that the students can come into contact with the eu.
