    Critical Energy Transfer...

Large power transformers are found around the world atutility, industrial, and commercial sites. You know theirimportance and their common applications.

Generator step-up (GSU) Substation or switchyard Industrial and commercial

You trust that they will work seamlessly since youunderstand how critical energy transfer is.

But what if they fail? How disruptive is it?

An unexpected transformer busing or insulationfailure can disrupt an industrial process, shutdown a

commercial site, cripple a power plant or cause area-widepower outages. Depending on the extent of the damagecaused, the disruption could last for weeks.

Eatons Cutler-Hammer Predictive Diagnostics (CHPD) has aworld-wide reputation for online monitoring technology.CHPD diagnoses and evaluates the insulation of highvoltage electrical equipment:

    Power transformers

Keep Your Power Flowing! The Cutler-Hammer InsulGard G2 from Eaton Corporation is continuous, online insulation integrity monitoring system forlarge power transformers. It offers the following benefits:

Maximizes UptimeThe InsulGard G2 conducts testing online. Therefore, unnecessary maintenance outages are eliminated. Theproductivity of your transformer is enhanced.

Eliminates Inherent Flaws of Interval-Based TestingInterval testing is fine if you do it regularly. Yet, too often, the interval between tests is too long to detect an impend-ing failure. Trusting this hit or missmethod is not idealbecause you wont know when a problem started andhow rapidly it is progressing. The InsulGard G2 conductstests continuously and notifies you of impending problemsin advance.

Provides More Accurate Information EnhancesRisk ManagementOff-line testing methods can differ considerably from realoperating conditions: the temperature is different, the volt-age stresses are much lower and vibration is nonexistent.

Moreover, typical power factor testing is conducted at 10kVusually well below real operating conditions.Consequently, it is possible to underestimate the dielectriclosses (power factor) in the bushing insulation. InsulGardG2 is an online monitoring device.

Reduces Labor CostsSince the device conducts the tests, you wont have to use

personnel to conduct the tests. Their time can be redirectedto solving problems rather than uncovering them.

to solving problems rather than uncovering them.

When insulation breakdown accounts for 84 percent* of

transformer failures and up to 92 percent of electricalfailures are random **, ensuring uptime and reliabilitymay seem like an impossible taskbut not any longer. The InsulGard G2 is an online, continuous testing tooldesigned to monitor bushing insulation integrity on largepower transformers. It allows you to evaluate thecondition of your equipment at any time, in a cost-effective manner.

How InsulGard G2OperatesChanges in bushing capacitance and power factor areindicative of insulation deterioration. The InsulGard G2detects these changes by summarizing and balancing thecurrents of a three-phase bushing set at the time ofcommission. It then generates a complex calculatednumber (Gamma). If theres an imbalance, it generates anoutput signal that is proportional to the relative change inthe bushingscurrents due to insulation deterioration. Theoutput signal reflects changes in both power factor andcapacitance of the monitored bushing set.

    Display Panel

The monitor is designed to indicate insulation status inseveral ways. The display panel has a multi-function LEDthat will glow a different color depending on the severityof the problem. Alerts are classified in three categories:green (normal), warning (yellow), and alarm (red). Theparameters are programmable and the device can beprogrammed at the panel or remotely through a computerlink up (optional). The panel also contains a second multi-function LED to show monitor status: normal (green),setup mode (yellow) or error (red). The unit performs self-diagnostics to ensure proper operation and will indicateany malfunction locally as well as remotely.

Three additional LEDs indicate whether each of three

bushings are currently being monitoredgiven they caneasily be taken off line for other testing purposes.

The last visual element on the display monitor is analphanumeric display panel which indicates the actualGamma reading expressed as a percent change and thelocation of the phase angle of the imbalanced vector. Thephase angle vector will indicate which of the threebushings is defective.

    Communication

The InsulGard G2 is also designed tocommunicate with a Digital Control System(DCS) or Supervisory Control and DataAcquisition (SCADA) system. Both a warninglevel alarm and the error status relay willnotify the operations center when and if aproblem occurs. The 4-20 mA output, however, continuously sends a reading to the operationscenter by indicating the percent of change inGamma on a fixed scale.

Sensor installed in capacitor tap on bushing

The InsulGard G2 comes standard with anRS-232 serial port so you can communicatewith it on site. Or, it is available with a com-mercial-grade modem and an RS-485 interfacefor remote communication. Diagnostic soft-ware comes standard as part of the InsulGard

    G2 system.

Bushing SensorsA three-bushing sensor set is standard withthe InsulGard G2 package. A large variety ofthread sizes/configurations allow compatibilitywith virtually all large power transformerbushings. Customized bushing sensors areavailable with appropriate lead-time. Ourstandard sensors are designed for bushingswith rated voltage of 69 500 kV. An optional800 kV is available. For voltages of 34.5 kV andbelow, only measurement of PD isrecommended and specialized sensors are

    available for this purpose.

    What the Package Includes

Three universal bushing sen-sors, mounted on bushingcapacitor taps, which condi-tion both the power frequency, capacitance and partial dis-charge signals to the monitor

A neutral sensor installedon the ground of the windingneutral (in the absence ofa grounded neutral, thesensor can be installed on the

    tank ground)

    Oil temperature sensor

    The InsulGard G2 monitor

    Special software

The InsulGard G2 offers a unique and superiortesting methodology because it allows you tomonitor partial discharge activity in bothbushings and transformer using the samesensor set. Like power factor and capacitancechanges, partial discharges are also indicativeof insulation breakdown. The InsulGard G2houses three BNC connectorsone for eachphasewhich allow connection to ourUniversal Partial Discharge Analyzer (UPDA).Online periodic monitoring of partial discharge(arcing or sparking) can help provide a root-

cause analysis of internal gassing or otherdischarge activity related to the windinginsulation, internal connections, bushings, ormagnetic core iron.

InstrumentationUnparalleled in accuracy and noisesuppression capabilities, the portableCutler-Hammer Universal Partial DischargeAnalyzer (UPDA) is specifically developed forfield detection and analysis of partial dischargeactivity. The UPDA features eight differentialinput channels, preamplifiers with a range of

more than 80-dB and data acquisition/analysissoftware with a library of five independent

    InsulGard G2 AllowsPartial Discharge Measurements

noise cancellation algorithms. It is capable of detecPD signals as low as 20-30 pC. The detection of suchsignal levels is accomplished even in extremely noienvironments like those that occur in substations opower plants. Such sensitivity and signal resolutionbeen historically accomplished under laboratoryconditions only. The UPDA software operates on a Pstores the rawdata, analyzes it, calculates main Pstatistical indices, presents them in a graphical formgenerates a report.
