1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

ADVID

Mission

According to its Statutes, the purposes of ADVID are “the study, experimentation, demonstration

and dissemination of winegrowing techniques suited to the specific characteristics of the

Demarcated Douro Region, with a view to the competitiveness and quality of the wines in

domestic and international markets, on its own initiative or in collaboration with state or private,

national or foreign organisations or services and also to represent and defend the interests of

members with all official or private organisations of a national, regional or international nature”.

Its goals also include organising vocational training, technical support for integrated and organic

production and the promotion and protection of the environmental and landscape heritage of the

DDR.

“The results of the actions and studies undertaken shall be made public, for the Douro

winegrowers to have access to them through publications, courses, colloquiums and other

methods of dissemination that the Executive Board deems appropriate”.

Vision

To be the main platform for dissemination of knowledge/mapping of problems, between the

University and Research Organisations and Wine Companies in the Demarcated Douro Region.

Demarcated

Douro

Region Wine

Cluster

The activities developed to pursue its Mission in the direction of its Vision were what enabled

ADVID to submit an application for COMPETE in 2008, for a coherent series of initiatives

integrated into an action plan, subsequently recognised as a Collective Efficiency Strategy, named

Demarcated Douro Region Wine Cluster, and enabled ADVID to be acknowledged as its

management entity.

The Mission of the Cluster is to foster and consolidate the wine production sector in the Douro

Region, through a technologically sustainable strategy applied to all players.

And its Vision it that the sector be environmentally, economically and socially sustainable,

supported by a culture of network cooperation to reduce threats and maximise opportunities.

The mission of ADVID and the mission of ADVID as the Management Entity of the Cluster merge

while the Visions complement each other.

The activities carried out throughout 2010 and presented in this Report always took into account

this Mission and Vision in the two dimensions of ADVID.

Governance

Bodies

To fill the vacancy in the existing Executive Board since José Manuel Froes Burguete Sousa Soares

has been unable to represent Sogevinus Fine Wines S.A., the General Meeting of 27 April

approved the proposal for the vacancy to be filled by Mariana Sofia Martins Alves Carvela Gomes

Ferreira de Brito in representation of the member Lemos & Van Zeller Lda.

Structure

Still with regard to the operational implementation of the Cluster management entity, the same

General Meeting approved the revision of the Association Statutes, to increase the efficiency of

relations with Members and strengthen the Executive Board, through the creation of the General

Management and Technical Management, focusing respectively on areas of administration and

technical orientation.

Human

Resources

To handle the volume of work brought by the recognition of ADVID as the Cluster management

entity, the technical team was reinforced by the hiring of Maria do Carmo Val, the hiring of Rosa

Amador seconded from DRAPN and also the hiring of Sara Meireles on a work placement scheme.

Membership

Structure

From 2009 to 2010, there was almost no variation in the number of members, since in 2009 there

were 181 members and at the end of 2010 there were 180. The residual fall in the number of

members was not reflected in the value of the earnings generated by membership fees, since the

number of corporate and full members increased, which was reflected in an increase in earnings.

Highlights

• Joint order 2780/2010 of 27 January, of the Minister for the Economy, Innovation and

Development and of the Minister for Science, Technology and Higher Education

acknowledged the good standing of ADVID in matters of research and development,

namely in the areas of viticulture and protection of the growing of vines.

• The award winner in the category "Viticulture", selected by the OIV (International

Organisation of Vine and Wine) award jury, which met on 23 June 2010 during the 33rd

World Congress of Vine and Wine, in Tbilisi (Georgia), was "Tratado de Viticultura: a

videira, a vinha e o terroir", by Prof. Nuno Magalhães. This work was sponsored by

ADVID, in recognition of the significant importance of mutual collaboration with the

author since the Association was set up.

• In August 2010, ADVID was nominated by CNOIV to represent Portugal in the OIV ad hoc

group “Carbon Dioxide Balance”.

• On 28 October, at the invitation of the Committee on Economic Affairs, Innovation and

Energy, ADVID submitted a progress report on the Demarcated Douro Region Wine

Cluster at the Hearing held at the Assembly of the Republic, organised by the Working

Group for Monitoring Competitiveness and Technology Centres and Clusters set up

within that Committee.

• On 6 December 2010, approval was given to the agreement between MADRP and

PORVID, to transfer to PORVID, for a period of 50 years, the management of the land

intended for the Central Experimental Centre for the Conservation of Indigenous Vine

Variability. The experimental centre in Herdade de Pegões, in the municipality of

Palmela, is intended to preserve all varieties of Portuguese vines and to develop

experimental projects for subsequent use.

Self-

Assessment

Although no indicators and targets for 2010 were established in the Business Plan, we can

consider as benchmarks, for self-assessment, compliance with this Plan and the progress report

on the Strategy and Action Programme indicators established for assessment of the Demarcated

Douro Region Wine Cluster. An analysis of the following tables shows that the development of the

indicators has been positive.

We can see that among Flagship Projects, of the targets established, we did not implement the

“Rationalisation of Hillside Vineyards” application. The remaining applications envisaged were

submitted to the Programmes that opened. Having realised that we might not be able to achieve

the objectives of each Flagship Project with a single application for a particular

measure/programme, we opted to submit different applications for each flagship project, in order

to ensure the eligibility of the needs detected.

The indicators associated with R&D present positive trends, some reaching values very close to

the targets set for 2012.

The work carried out in the field of Communication and Dissemination did not achieve the desired

results for all indicators, however other indicators, including “Training Courses and Dissemination

Events” and “Dissemination of technical information and publications released into the public

domain”, exceeded targets and almost reached the targets set for 2012.

Although it is not easy to quantify the Complementary Projects, we have noted that between

FEADER and FEAGA, the target set for 2012 for the “Production units modernised” indicator has

already been reached. Also with regard to the increase in exports and rise in turnover, according

to IVDP data, exports from January to October increased by 6.8% and there was a rise in revenue

of 7.4%, compared with the equivalent period of 2009.

An analysis of compliance with the Business Plan for 2010 shows that the largest deviations

occurred in Funded Training Courses, in Workshop contents and in participation in international

events by the technical team. The deviations in Funded Training Courses arise essentially from the

fact that not all the courses submitted by ADVID to POPH were approved, due to budget

limitations. The deviations in Workshop contents and participation in international events are

essentially due to the priority given to the implementation of Flagship Projects, to the promotion

of the Cluster within Portugal and to knowledge diffusion in areas identified in 2010 as most in

need.

2. MANAGEMENT STRUCTURE

On 27 April, an Extraordinary General Meeting was held to approve the filling of the vacancy on the Executive

Board, for the three-year period 2009/2011, and decided on the appointment, in representation of Lemos & Van

Zeller, Lda, a Corporate Member Associate, Mariana Sofia Ferreira de Brito, in accordance with Art. 10.2 and 4 of

the Statutes. The new composition of the Executive Board is as follows:

José Manso – Chairman

António Rocha Graça – Member

Carlos Caldeira – Member

Francisco Ferreira – Member

Mariana Brito – Member

3. OPERATIONAL STRUCTURE OF ADVID

An Extraordinary General Meeting held on 28 July, in the Auditorium of the Solar do Vinho do Porto, in Régua,

approved the decision of the Executive Board to appoint, as Managing Director, Rosa Maria Martins Amador and,

as Technical Director, Fernando José Martins dos Santos Alves, in accordance with Art. 22.1 of the Statutes. To

further reinforce the team, Maria do Carmo do Val was also hired and an application was made to IEFP for a work

placement scheme, which led to the hiring of Sara Meireles for 1 year.

5. RESEARCH AND EXPERIMENTAL DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES

5.1. Climate change

5.1.1. Impact of climate change

To respond to the concerns of the wine sector, and taking into account the preparation of the flagship project on

the Impact of Climate Change, various contacts were made with Prof. Gregory Jones from the University of Oregon

(UO), which led to a tour of the Douro Region in August to determine the general framework for the project to be

developed.

Following the working meetings, information was compiled to support the development of the project and we

began to structure the database to support short-term actions, including:

• Collecting and analysing reference data for the Douro Region;

• Supporting the development and calibration of a harvest quality index;

• Developing tools to improve the spatial resolution of climate data for the region;

• Developing and calibrating a zoning model for the variability of regional production;

• Drafting risk maps for biotic and abiotic stress.

5.1.2. Preparing a quality index for assessment of the winegrowing year

Taking into account the importance of drawing up a compound index to

permit more objective assessment of winegrowing years, for validation

of climate change effects, and based on the main objectives of ADVID's

annual tastings of harvest wines, the FEUP - Faculty of Engineering of

the University of Porto (Prof. José António Sarsfield Cabral and Prof.

José Luís Cabral de Moura Borges) was asked to set up an annual

quality index on the quality of wine produced. Throughout 2010,

several meetings were held with the FEUP working team, and FEUP

admitted a doctorate grant holder, António Côrte-Real, to work

exclusively on this subject. The winemakers of Members were also

surveyed on their perception of the quality of Port wines from 1993 to 2008.

To pursue this objective, the 17th Annual Harvest Wine Tasting was held on 25 and 26 March and 8 and 9 April

2010, at the School of Biotechnology (ESB), Porto, the first dates being for Douro DOC and the second dates for

Fortified Wines, data collection software having been used.

In addition to fortified wines, Douro DOC wines were tasted, although this year only red wines, all the samples

having been analysed in advance, the main aim having been to establish a framework for visual assessment

parameters.

As has been the case in previous years, the tasting sessions were organised by category (representative quality,

maximum quality and varieties). An average of 12 tasters were present at each session. The usual presentation and

discussion of the winegrowing year took place at the last session, on 9 April 2010.

5.1.3. Water relations of the grapevine

The aim of this project is to understand the effect of different water regimes on the viticultural and oenological

behaviour of the Touriga Nacional variety. Initially developed and concentrated on the Quinta dos Aciprestes trial

block, in 2007 it was extended to two new locations (Quinta da Granja/Leda and Quinta do Noval), at the request of

the members, which thus formed two new reference blocks for this issue.

Quinta dos Aciprestes (Soutelo do Douro)

This trial has monitored, since 2002, the water status of vines, subject to three drip irrigation rates (0%, 30% and

60% of the cPET – corrected Potential Evapotranspiration), between June and the end of September (12

observations). Base leaf water potential and changes in soil water were monitored from 15 June until 20

September. Ripening was monitored through brief analysis and phenolic components and at the harvest the

behaviour of production parameters for the different modalities was determined. Management of the water status

of the vine requires appropriate monitoring tools. This trial studied various water status indicators, for the soil and

the plant. In 2010 we continued to study the soil humidity using a TDR sensor, base water and minimum leaf

potential, using a pressure chamber (Scholander pump).

 Quinta da Granja (Almendra)

In July and September, two observations were made of changes in water in the soil and in the plant, using the base

water potential. Ripening was monitored and yield parameters were assessed.

 Quinta do Noval (Pinhão)

On this trial block, set up in a vineyard laid out in one-row micro-patamares, two modalities (0%, 30% of cPET) with

three repetitions were also studied. The irrigation period was shorter than in the other trial locations, since the

monitoring followed by the base water potential suggested a reduced need for irrigation.

For this trial there were 13 observations of plant water status and soil water, between June and September, to

enable us to characterise, in addition to the response of the vine to irrigation, the water relations of the plant,

when installed in this type of land layout. The monitoring of ripening took place on 3 dates and at the harvest 20

vines were controlled per modality, totalling 120, and after pruning, the weight of the pruning wood from the

different modalities was determined.

5.2. Sustainable Production

5.2.1. Behaviour of varieties and rootstocks

At the 2010 harvest, the yield parameters of pruning wood weight as well as summary and phenolic ripening were

assessed for the trial set up in Quinta da Cavadinha, which involves 4 varieties (Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca,

Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca) and 5 rootstocks (R99, R110, 1103P, 196-17 and R. Lot).

5.2.2. Prediction of harvest potential using the pollen method

The aim of this project, which started in 1992 and has support from IVDP, with laboratory and statistical analysis by

the Faculty of Sciences at UP, is the application of a methodology for rapid harvest prediction based on analysis of

the atmospheric pollen count, observed in three locations in the Region.

The pollen collectors were put into place on 11 May in Cambres and Valença do Douro and on 18 May in Vila Nova

de Foz Côa and all were removed on 15 June. Figure 3 presents the flowering rate for the three pollen collection

locations.

The high concentration of pollen collected and subsequent data processing and drawing up of estimates for 2010

suggested for the year a high yield potential, with a prediction interval of between 303 and 366 thousand barrels of

must, representing a significant increase compared with the yield declared in 2009.

Budbreak, cluster size and fruit set conditions for the Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz varieties, among others,

contributed to this yield expectation.

The final yield expectation will be dependent on climate conditions during ripening, with the final yield being

adjusted within the predicted yield interval.

5.2.3. Tinta Roriz pollination - flowering anomalies

Following the yield prediction project and anomalies in the flowering of Tinta Roriz plants already having been

identified in previous years, this problem was submitted to the team from the Palynology Laboratory at the Faculty

of Sciences of Porto University, which began to study the issues surrounding this question in the context of a

Masters degree.

Based on the blocks and vines identified by ADVID, morphological, productive and qualitative anomalies were

identified in the flowers, clusters and must respectively. DNA tests were carried out and their viticultural and

oenological behaviour was studied. Future work is suggested to compare any differences in pollen fertility and to

observe the persistence of the anomalies.

The MA thesis by Ricardo Costa Pinto entitled “Characterisation of atypical flowers in Vitis vinifera L. cv. Aragonez”

and 4 scientific articles at four conferences, their authorship shared with ADVID through the technician Paulo

Costa, were presented in 2010.

5.2.4 Control of the grapevine moth using the mating disruption method

Protection against the grapevine moth using the mating disruption (MD) method has been studied by ADVID since

2000. Knowledge acquired over the course of a decade ensured the identification of strong points where its

effectiveness can be maximised, as well as some restrictions that limit its use. This knowledge has been made

available to all members and has even led to the 2010 publication of the Technical Manual No. 4 “Mating

disruption of the grapevine moth in the DDR” and to the dissemination of information available at technical

colloquia held both in Portugal and abroad (3rd CERVIM, Sicily).

In addition to the diffusion of knowledge acquired, members with greater interest in the application of more

sustainable means of protection against the grapevine moth asked ADVID for specialised support in this context,

particularly in programming the application of dispensers in the field, in the training of technical personnel and

agricultural workers of the company and other employees involved and in evaluation of the effectiveness of this

means of control during the campaign, through monitoring of moth damage both in locations subject to MD and

in reference blocks (without MD). Thus, in 2010, following on from previous years, ADVID accompanied and

provided specialised technical support to certain quintas namely São Luís, Vallado, Cidrô, Ventozelo, Carvalhas

and Dona Matilde. To this end, it benefitted from the cooperation of technical staff from the companies involved,

Page 17: ASSOCIAÇÃO PARA O DESENVOLVIMENTO DA VITICULTURA …€¦ · A D V I D ASSOCIAÇÃO PARA O DESENVOLVIMENTO DA VITICULTURA DURIENSE Demarcated Douro Region Wine Cluster Annual Report

17

who were responsible for installing the dispensers, monitoring the pheromone traps and accompanying us during

all the sampling.

The effectiveness of this method was evaluated by comparison of both the captures obtained in a pheromone

trap placed within the MD area and captures in a trap placed in a control area without dispensers, and damage

occurring in both locations (3 risk estimates made over 3 generations and a final estimate at harvest).

The grapevine moth had a very high biotic potential in 2010 and more than 2000 adult males were observed in

some pheromone traps, which may have in itself affected the effectiveness of MD in some locations (e.g. Vallado,

Ventozelo), there being a need to supplement its action with the application of insecticide treatments, above all

during the 2nd and 3rd generations. In some locations, there was even a 4th flight of this moth (Fig. 4).

Fig. 4 - Flight curve of the grapevine moth in 2010 (data collected by Quinta do Vallado).

Although the moth had ideal conditions for its development in 2010, no significant presence of grey rot nor sour

rot was observed, as a result of the climate conditions during the ripening period.

The blocks with the best results in 2010 were those that presented from the outset better natural characteristics

(less moth pressure, less slopes, greater consistency (e.g. Quinta do Cidrô), where the moth was controlled,

without using any treatment, or those where, despite a history of greater presence of the moth, the area with

dispensers was significantly increased (Quinta de São Luís, 82 hectares).

5.2.5. Emerging pests

ADVID provided specialised support for the monitoring of emerging pests in the DDR, including the two-spotted

spider mite, which has been occurring more significantly in the Douro Superior, vine mealybugs in blocks located

close to watercourses and the leafhopper Scaphoideus titanus Ball., the vector of Flavescence Dorée, which occur

more significantly in blocks located near Vila Real. Notable was the close collaboration of ADVID with DRAPN in

surveying this leafhopper and any other vectors liable to occur in the DDR, as well as in the systematisation of the

information collected on flight curves, in order to contribute to the definition of protection strategies.

ADVID has taken a leading role in the monitoring of developments in emerging pests, particularly of the

leafhopper Scaphoideus titanus Ball., the vector of Flavescence Dorée, resulting in the publication of an article in

2004 at the ATEVA symposium which summarised information on its biological cycle in Vila Real, where it was first

observed. In 2010 ADVID collaborated with DRAPN in surveying this leafhopper and any other vectors liable to

occur in the DDR, as well as in the systematisation of the information collected on flight curves, in order to

contribute to the definition of protection strategies.

ADVID also provided specialised support on the monitoring of pests such as the two-spotted spider mite, which

has been occurring more significantly in the Douro Superior, in hotter locations and from May on. While vine

mealybugs Planococcus ficus (Signoret), in the family Psaeudococcidae, more harmful in the Douro, have been

observed with greater intensity in blocks located close to watercourses, on different varieties (e.g. Tinta Roriz,

Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional), scale insects from the family Coccidae cause less direct damage but have

been observed more often within clusters (close to the rachis) and are not a major concern to winegrowers,

although it is known that they may be related to the transmission of viruses.

5.2.6. Monitoring of powdery mildew and downy mildew

Using a block in the Baixo Corgo in order to assess/study the effectiveness of the strategy to control downy mildew

on vines in 2010, we accompanied developments in the disease. The trial took place on a block in the Baixo Corgo

sub-region with around 0.3 ha and where the predominant variety is Tinta Roriz, which is a representative variety in

the region and quite sensitive to this disease. On the same block, the development of powdery mildew was also

monitored at the same time.

5.3. Preserving the genetic variability of grape varieties

5.3.1. PORVID - Portuguese Association for Grapevine Diversity

In 2009, ADVID in partnership with other institutions, associations and companies in the wine sector founded the

Portuguese Association for Grapevine Diversity - PORVID.

The central objective of the association is to bring together skills and resources to preserve and develop the genetic

diversity of grape varieties and wild populations of grapevines, disseminating the knowledge produced and offering

foundations for the quality and identity of Portuguese wines.

In 2010, PORVID signed an agreement with the Minister for Agriculture to transfer the management and use of the

Pegões Experimental Centre, to set up the Association's experimental unit.

With a view to preserving grapevine diversity, in 2010 ADVID, DRAPN and IVDP surveyed and collected material

from old vineyards subject to conversion, in order to preserve the genetic heritage at risk of being lost. ADVID also

took part in the working session dedicated to defining short-term strategies for surveying plant material, the

identification of Vitis silvestris and experimentation and dissemination measures to be launched by PORVID.

5.3.2. Clonal selection of grapevines

In 2010, we continued to monitor clonal selection fields in Quinta da Granja in Alijó - owned by the Member

Companhia Geral da Agricultura do Norte, during grafting and harvest data collection.

5.4. Grape quality assessment

5.4.1. Non-destructive analysis of grape berries – Touriga Franca

On 23 September 2010 analyses were made of around 200 vines corresponding to approximately 1 ha of vines by

spectroradiometry using the VINE-Pat equipment, developed at the Catholic University of Portugal (UCP) – School

of Biotechnology (ESB) and University of Minho (UMinho), by Prof. César Ferreira and Prof. Rui Martins,

respectively.

The variety used was a block of vinha ao alto Touriga Franca on Quinta dos Aciprestes belonging to the Member

Companhia Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do Alto Douro.

The VINE-Pat methodology is based on UV-VIS-SWNIR spectroscopy techniques and is used essentially to obtain

high quality images of vine metabolism in order to permit precision viticulture. In addition it can be used for non-

invasive study of ripening progress, in other words, without collecting berries, for most of the parameters analysed

using classical methods.

5.5. Functional biodiversity in viticulture

5.5.1. Ecological infrastructure in the biological conservation protection against grapevine pests, in

the DDR (Demarcated Douro Region)

The aim of this work of a period of around 36 months is to contribute to increasing functional biodiversity of vines

in the Demarcated Douro Region, by setting up a suitable network of ecological infrastructure (EI) with the essential

objective of encouraging the activity of natural enemies of crop pests, especially those that act on the grapevine

moth.

The activities take place in three wine estates in the sub-region of Cima Corgo, namely the quintas of São Luís

(Sogevinus Vinhos, S.A.), Quinta do Seixo (SOGRAPE Vinhos, S.A.) and Quinta das Carvalhas (Real Companhia

Velha). Of the tasks envisaged, the following began in 2010:

Characterisation of the main plant communities

2 botanical surveys per estate (with around 20 to 25 sampling points), one in May, the other in September, with

identification of the plant species present both within the vineyard and in ecological infrastructure (EI) in their

vicinity. Information was collected on the flowering periods of the main species over the course of the programme.

Characterisation of the arthropod fauna in plant communities

Arthropods were collected on the vine and in the EI using three sampling methods: D-VAC suction, yellow

chromotropic traps and Pitfall type traps. The specimens caught are being photographed and classified in

morphotypes, using the Rapid Biodiversity Assessment (RBA) method and a classification file has been created that

may be used as a support tool in the future.

Monthly surveys were conducted, consisting of the observation of the arthropod fauna present on the most

abundant plant species on the estates, in order to analyse their potential interest in attracting moth predators and

parasitoids.

5.5.2. BioDiVine

ADVID, in cooperation with 6 partners1 from 3 European countries (France, Spain and Portugal), is part of a

consortium that submitted an application in September 2009 to the European Programme LIFE+ (Nature and

Biodiversity 2009), which was approved in May 2010 and officially launched in September 2010.

The main objective of this project is to increase functional biodiversity in viticulture through the landscape, in order

to encourage the natural limitation of grapevine pests and diseases. The project intends to promote the creation of

semi-natural complementary spaces, or ecological ("green") infrastructure in vineyards, such as hedges, ground

cover and/or headlands, the restoration of stone walls, in order to host arthropods, birds, small mammals, fungi,

plants, etc. The aim is to increase plant biodiversity and to create conditions that encourage and support animal

biodiversity.

For the purpose, over the course of the project (2011-2014), cartographic characterisation studies will be made of

the landscape on 3 locations in the region and the arthropod, bird and mammal fauna will be monitored in

experimental blocks where this ecological infrastructure will be increased, in order to improve the winegrowing

ecosystem.

The results will be disclosed through the development of a website with educational tools on the project, and

through the creation of management plans and a technical guide for producers. Knowledge transfer will take place

through conferences, publications and workshops.

In 2010, in addition to participation in meetings to launch the project and analyse the technical protocols to be

developed, in Nîmes and Bordeaux respectively, ADVID worked to prepare tools for analysis of the locations to be

studied.

5.5.3. Effect of cultivation practices on the biodiversity of microorganisms beneficial to vine nutrition

and health

The biological activity of the soil is essential for nutrition, health and the tolerance of plants to unfavourable

growing conditions. Soil microorganisms include several functional groups that have earned particular attention

due to their ecological importance and the potential for manipulation of their populations, such as mycorrhizal

fungi and entomopathogenic fungi, as well as plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and enzyme producers

(cellulases, chitinases, ureases, etc.), siderophores, antibiotics or antifungals. Given the impact of cultivation

practices on biodiversity and the biological activity of the soil, there is great interest in assessing the effect of

different vine training methods on the structure of its microbial populations.

In order to obtain preliminary information on the microbial biodiversity of the soil in vineyards cultivated

organically and with integrated protection, two vineyards were selected in a DDR estate located in Cima Corgo, on

Quinta das Lages, where 5 samples were collected of roots and soil from each vineyard.

Despite the limited number of samples, which prevents conclusions from being reached, a large number of

bacterial morphotypes were isolated in the soil cultivated with integrated protection. However, a higher number of

actinomycetes was obtained in the vineyard cultivated organically. This functional group of bacteria is recognised

for its antagonist properties against phytopathogenic fungi. The sample also helped the development of a fast and

simple method for assessment of soil structure, which needs to be confirmed in other situations.

These results, which are preliminary and require future confirmation, point to a better soil structure in the organic

vineyard, with plant cover, possibly due to the larger percentage of glomalin and other mucilaginous substances

resulting from the greater abundance of mycorrhizal fungi.

This work was developed at UTAD (Prof. Guilhermina Marques) with the cooperation of ADVID and Quinta das

Lages – Symington.

5.6. Support for experimental development

5.6.1. Collection, processing and dissemination of climate information

ADVID operates a network of automated climate stations (ADCON Telemetry), comprising 6 units installed by

ADVID and in cooperation with members, located in Régua, Adorigo, Pinhão, Tua, Vesúvio and Vilariça, at

elevations of up to 180 m, close to the River Douro, providing monitoring of changes in climate conditions

throughout the Demarcated Douro Region.

The information collected supports ADVID's experimentation activities and after being processed is sent to

members, each week, during the growth cycle, to support decision taking concerning phytosanitary treatments and

ripening assessment.

Since 2006, evapotranspiration information has also been available for three locations, to help prepare water

balances. In 2010 a new model for the presentation of climate data was introduced and the rate of circulation of

weekly data during the growth cycle was increased, particularly extreme occurrences.

6. SUPPORT SERVICES FOR GOOD FARMING PRACTICES BY OPERATORS IN THE DDR

6.1. Technical support for integrated vine production

In the context of the development of the Integrated Production and Protection programme, ADVID monitored

members' blocks, collecting information and providing the training necessary for correct application of these

Production and Protection methods, supplementing this with the publication of Technical Bulletins, Circulars to

accompany the vine growth cycle and the development of diseases and pests, and training.

6.2. Oenology

6.2.1. Ripening control

In addition to the immediate aim of providing members with the results of

ripening progress on the respective blocks, a general objective of this initiative

was the creation of a database on the behaviour of the main varieties in the

different sub-regions of the Douro.

Members participating in this initiative were provided with customised reports on the behaviour of their blocks, with

regard to routine tests: Weight (g); Volume of liquid (mL); Potential alcohol (%); Total Acidity (mg/L Tartaric Acid)

and pH; and Phenolic ripening: Total anthocyanins; Extractable anthocyanins; Total polyphenols (TP); Anthocyanin

extractability - AE (%) and Tannin maturation - TM (%).

In 2010, 20 members and 1 non-member subscribed to this service, registering for the testing of ripening

assessment on nearly 220 vineyard blocks, which took place between 27 July and 8 October 2010, 1,125 tests

having been carried out. In addition, 104 ripening tests on ADVID trials were carried out, totalling 1,229 routine and

phenolic tests processed in the laboratory.

7. DISSEMINATION, COMMUNICATION AND TRAINING

7.1. ADVID Prize 2010 – Jorge Ferreira

In 2007, ADVID set up an annual prize intended to distinguish a professional researcher, undergraduate, masters or

doctorate student, of any nationality, for a previously unpublished work in any scientific area that is of substantial

importance for winegrowing in the Demarcated Douro Region.

Each year, the Prize is given the name of a person who has made a distinguished contribution to the development

of winegrowing in the Douro Region. In 2010 the person chosen was Jorge Ferreira, one of the founders of ADVID

and a member of the first Executive Board elected in 1982.

Born in Porto in 1934, Jorge Ferreira devoted his whole professional life to the Douro, one of his great passions!

Immediately after graduating in Civil Engineering, he began working as a Director for Casa Ferreira (A.A. Ferreira),

being responsible for the production and management of the Quintas in the Douro, a position he held until 1985,

when he decided to devote himself 100% to the management of Quinta do Vallado, which he owned. He died in

1992.

Based on a selection of works by the ADVID Directors, the Jury decided to present the 2010 Jorge Ferreira Prize to

the work:

"Highlighting Features of Spatiotemporal Spread of Powdery Mildew Epidemics in the Vineyard Using Statistical

Modeling on Field Experimental Data", which was developed by the Department of Plant Health (A. Calonnec, P.

Cartolaro) and Biometrics Station (J. Chadoeuf) of the INRA (Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique) in

France.

Brief summary of the prizewinning work

Powdery mildew is one the most problematic fungal diseases for Portuguese viticulture, found in all regions and

causing significant damage.

The management of interventions against powdery mildew is based in the preferred treatment periods, covering

relatively long periods of time (e.g. between the onset of flowering and cluster closure) requiring substantial

expenditure of resources and application of fungicides.

With this work, the authors sought to develop a stochastic model that identifies the expected form of dispersion of

the disease within a block, in terms of the detection of primary foci (always very difficult to identify) and from that

estimates the variation and progress of the disease.

Symposium - "Biodiversity, creating value between Ecology and Economy"

Date: 8 July

Venue: Pinhão

Guest speakers: Prof. Antero Martins, Prof. Laura Torres, Dr. Mark Jervis, Prof. José Carlos Franco, Prof.

Guilhermina Marques, Prof. Raul Rodrigues, Prof. Cristina Amaro da Costa, Dr. Damien Wilson, Dr. Joël

Rochard, Prof. António Crespi and Cristina Carlos.

Guest moderators: José Manso, David Guimaraens, Cristiano Van Zeller.

In the context of the International Year of Biodiversity, and pursuing its mission through one of its priorities, ADVID

organised on 8 July 2010 the Symposium - “Biodiversity in viticulture: value creation between Ecology and the

Economy”.

With this event, ADVID sought to bring to the Douro Region renowned researchers in this area, both Portuguese

and foreign, with the aim of promoting debate on the sustainable preservation of winegrowing in the oldest

Demarcated Region in the world and also to disseminate its own action plan in the field of Biodiversity (Genetic

biodiversity of the grapevine and Functional biodiversity in viticulture), thus justifying the option for this topic for

two Flagship Projects of the “Douro Wine Cluster”.

Dates: 6, 13 and 20 July

Venues: Régua and Casais do Douro

Guest speakers: Prof. Nuno Magalhães, Dr. Eiras-Dias, Prof. Antero Martins and Dr. Paulo Costa

With a view to increasing knowledge of the most common varieties in the Demarcated Douro Region, their

identification, adaptation and viticultural behaviour, ADVID successfully organised a course entitled

“Ampelography and preservation of the genetic resources of grape varieties in the Demarcated Douro Region”.

On the other hand, questions related to the preservation of genetic vine resources, the biodiversity associated with

varieties and their use, their selection and the interest for the wine sector of the presence of Vitis sylvestris, highly

topical issues, were also the focus of special attention.

 Workshop "Grape Quality Assessment”

Date: 20 August

Venue: Régua

Guest speakers: José Luís Silva and Paulo Costa

Advance knowledge of the main characteristics of grapes is increasingly important for qualitative reasons as well as

for their improvement in accordance with the wine intended. For this reason, a workshop was held on 20 August in

Régua to study the meaning of each parameter in the ripening test and their importance for winemakers, their

impact on scheduling the harvest date, on the selection of grapes for each type of wine and on the determination

of the technological path to be followed.

Practical aspects of sampling techniques were also discussed and the performance of the ADVID laboratory and its

results were assessed.

ADVID has a website to increase its capacity for communication with members. In 2010, new procedures and

methodologies for updating and entering content were implemented, in order to facilitate communication between

ADVID and its members, partners and external entities, reflected in an increase in the number of visits to the

institutional website, of round 20,000 visits (19,907).

7.5. Training

7.5.1. ADVID Course - WSET level 3/4

As in previous years, in connection with the advanced training of the

technical staff of its members and other sectors, ADVID organised in

2010, with the collaboration of the WINE & SPIRIT EDUCATION

TRUST (England) and support from IVDP, a WSET level 3/4 course on

the subject of the main regions and wines of the world, which seeks

to bring viticulture information from consumer markets. This course

was held at the Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e Porto in the city of

Porto from 22 to 29 November 2010. Oriented by Godfrey Spence

(WSET), it was attended by 10 students.

A new WSET level 3/4 course was also planned, to take place in

2011.

7.5.2. Training Courses for winegrowers

In 2010, after approval of the biannual application (2010/2011) that had been submitted to POPH, ADVID began the

programme of training for farmers, focusing on Vine Training and Pruning, the Application of Plant Protection

Products and Grape Quality Assessment. With a high level of participation among members, particularly notable

was the continuity in giving priority to sessions in a work context, permitting better knowledge transfer, also taking

advantage of the commitment of members to the provision of locations and resources for these courses, receiving

on their properties trainees from various members.

The following table presents the courses held and their dates and locations.

7.6. Institutional Empowerment Network for the Promotion of Employability in the

Douro

In the context of the Territorial Pact for Employment and Employability in the Douro, which ADVID as founding

partner signed on 10 December 2009, an application was submitted in August 2010 to PCI – Institutional

Empowerment Network for support for the project “Institutional Empowerment Network for the Promotion of

Employability – Douro”, endorsed by all the participants on the Douro Employment and Employability Pact. The

direct promoters of this application are DREN and IEFP and its partner entities per sector are the following:

Sectors:

1. Wine: ADVID and DRAPN

2. Tourism: Escola de Hotelaria e Turismo de Lamego (EHTDouro)

3. Trade: ACIR

4. Culture: DR Cultura do Norte and/or Museu do Douro

The other entities joined the Monitoring Committee provided for in the application.

This project is intended to promote employability in the Douro region through a better adjustment between the

qualifications and skills offered by the education and training system and the needs and opportunities of the labour

market, through career guidance for young people and through increased awareness of the working population.

8. FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE ACTION PLAN

ADVID as the manager of the Demarcated Douro Region Wine Cluster must advance with the implementation of

the Action Plan, namely the implementation of the 8 Flagship Projects, as part of the Consortium or simply of the

Supervision Group. To fulfil the flagship projects 8 applications were submitted to various Support Programmes, of

which 6 have already been approved and 2 are awaiting a decision.

Taking into account the indicative typology of the preferential incentive systems, referenced in the approval of the

action plan (COMPETE and PRODER), we can make the following observations:

− First of all the FEDER/FEADER (COMPETE/PRODER) protocol of understanding is incompatible with R&D

projects aimed at the local development of value in the activities of the agricultural economic sector, with

regard to the delimitation of fields of intervention of the respective funds.

− With regard to COMPETE (FEDER), there is a conceptual difference between the principles of the

establishment and operation of a CES (Collective Efficiency Strategy) and the formatting of applications for SI

I&DT (Research and Technological Development Incentive System). Thus, the aim of including a significant

Page 41: ASSOCIAÇÃO PARA O DESENVOLVIMENTO DA VITICULTURA …€¦ · A D V I D ASSOCIAÇÃO PARA O DESENVOLVIMENTO DA VITICULTURA DURIENSE Demarcated Douro Region Wine Cluster Annual Report

41

number of SCTN companies and entities, enshrined in the definition of the CES, is threatened by the heavy

administrative burden necessary for the formulation of applications and subsequent monitoring of execution.

With regard to PRODER (FEADER), we would like to note the absence of guidelines to support entities recognised

as CESs, such as: positive discrimination for flagship projects submitted by CESs.

There are also difficulties in the Action 2.3.1., Conservation and Improvement of Genetic Resources, of a type more

appropriate for the Flagship Project “Preservation of the Biodiversity of Grapevine Varieties”, specifically the

development of partnerships for the development of the project. Only Public Entities can be promoters. If they

apply alone the support is 100%, if there are partnerships with private entities (which cannot be companies), the

support is 80%. The whole financial process involves the Public promoter, and it is difficult to operationalise due to

all the accounting/financial/administrative restrictions to which Public Administration is subject.

Table 2 presents a progress report for the flagship projects.

9. INSTITUTIONAL RELATIONS

 Casa do Douro Regional Council

Following the publication of Decree-Law 277/2003 of 6 November, the Directors of ADVID decided that the

reformulation of the composition of the Regional Council, of which the association is a part, would permit greater

participation in favour of the development of the Region's viticulture and wine quality. Thus ADVID attended all the

meetings held during 2010 through its Chairman.

 FEVIPOR

ADVID is on the Board of FEVIPOR, the federation representing Portuguese winegrowers and which is an advisory

member of the Consultative Committee of the IVV, ViniPortugal and INRB.

In 2010 we expressed our point of view on the “Nomenclature Rules and Revision of Variety Lists”, through a

document we sent to the Chairman of FEVIPOR and which he defended with the Consultative Committee of the

IVV, which we can summarise as follows:

Each variety must be characterised using molecular biology methods that unmistakably distinguish it from all others.

For the purposes of referencing in scientific studies, technical documents intended exclusively for technical readers,

documentary resources on transactions involving plant material and in laws, the varieties should be referenced using a

short and neutral alphanumeric code (for example, the code of the National Ampelographic Collection: CANxxxxx). This

code should be added to the national list of varieties, with the respective correspondence of all the names and

synonyms used to date for each variety, without limitations, as well as their genetic identification based on DNA

microsatellites. However, no single name, comprising one or more words, will be allowed to correspond to more than

one code.

For the labelling of a wine produced based on grapes of a particular variety referenced by its code, any one of the

names/synonyms corresponding to that code on the list mentioned in 2 may be used, the choice being at the discretion

of the producer.

We also ask the Chairman of FEVIPOR for ADVID, as a member of the Board and considering there are no limits on

the number of members of each entity, to be part of the delegation present at meetings of the Consultative

Committee of the IVV.

 ADH – Historic Douro Association

We are also members of the ADH – Historic Douro Association, the entity responsible for management of the

Leader programme in the Region.

 PORVID

ADVID is a founder and member of the Board of PORVID - Portuguese Association for Vine Diversity, which seeks to

preserve and develop the genetic variety of native Portuguese varieties.

To pursue the mission of PORVID, on 9 July 2010 an agreement was signed to transfer to PORVID, for 50 years, the

Page 44: ASSOCIAÇÃO PARA O DESENVOLVIMENTO DA VITICULTURA …€¦ · A D V I D ASSOCIAÇÃO PARA O DESENVOLVIMENTO DA VITICULTURA DURIENSE Demarcated Douro Region Wine Cluster Annual Report

44

management of the land intended for the Central Experimental Centre for the Conservation of the Variability of

Native Vines. The experimental centre in Herdade de Pegões, in the municipality of Palmela, is intended to

preserve all varieties of Portuguese vines and to develop experimental projects for subsequent use.

This agreement includes the transfer of approximately 127 ha of winegrowing land, comprising 33 ha of vine in

production, various buildings and agricultural machines, as well as the secondment in the public interest of 4

workers.

The consideration to be provided by PORVID is essentially the implementation at the Centre of its own statutory

objectives of preserving grapevine diversity and the repayment to DRALVT of the cost of services and products

applied on vines in the 2010 programme.

As a result of later more careful assessments of the status of vines and the detection of new interactions with the

conservation of the Saloia sheep breed, to be carried out on the Herdade de Pegões by another association (ACRO,

Association of Livestock Breeders of the West), a final version of the agreement was signed on 12 November,

envisaging the transfer of 135 ha of winegrowing land and a worker and maintaining most of the remaining

conditions. The agreement was approved by MADRP on 6 December 2010, at a special ceremony, in the presence

of Members and various figures from the sector.

 Douro Mission Structure (EMD)

Over the course of 2010 no meeting of the Advisory Board of the EMD was held. However we monitored the work

of the EMD, we presented cases of dissonance in the landscape and we contributed to the preservation of this

landscape, particularly through Bulletins, Circulars, Workshops, Symposia and the identification of two strategic

lines that were defined in the Action Plan for the DDR Cluster: Biodiversity and Rationalisation of Hillside Vineyards.

We also requested a meeting with the Chairman of the Douro Mission Structure, which was held in November, in

order to tell this body about all the work that the ADVID has carried out on its own and as management entity of

the DDR Wine Cluster.

 CNOIV – National OIV Committee

As a member of the CNOIV, besides sitting on the General Council, ADVID is part of the Viticulture Group and in

2011 intends to join more Expert Groups.

In August 2010, the Directors of ADVID suggested, on their own initiative, the Technical Director of ADVID –

Fernando Alves to represent Portugal on the ad hoc group “Carbon Dioxide Balance” at OIV. This initiative emerged

from the need detected by the General Council on 9 June, concerning the Carbon Dioxide Balance (emission of

gases by the winegrowing sector – greenhouse effect), to seek a University-level figure to represent Portugal, given

that no working group from the CNOIV had sufficient knowledge to deal with this matter, in the OIV ad hoc group.

This proposal was accepted by the National CNOIV Committee, for which reason ADVID is the Portuguese

representative in the OIV “Carbon Balance” ad hoc group.

“Um Porto para o Mundo" Association”

Portugal will organise the 34th World Congress of Vine and Wine in Porto and as ADVID was interested in being

involved in the organisation of this event, particularly the organisation of technical tours to the DDR, in October it

joined this association which will be responsible for organising the Congress.

 CITAB at UTAD

ADVID, represented by the Board Member António Graça, was invited to join CITAB (Agri-Environment and Biology

Research and Technology Centre) of the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro.

CITAB is a multidisciplinary centre, with researchers who have experience in agro-food, forestry and environmental

studies and engineering, working in three intrinsically interconnected research groups: Ecointegrity, Biosystems

Engineering and Sustainable Agro-Food Chains.

In connection with its policy of close contact with the business community, CITAB set up a Consultative Committee

of Stakeholders with 6 people of recognised standing, which meets with the Executive Board and with its members,

evaluates research activities, gives advice and strategic guidelines on management and plans of action.

The participation of ADVID in the CITAB Consultative Committee of Stakeholders provides an opportunity to foster

the skills of that Centre with a view to meeting the real needs of the business community in the region.
