Present tenses

• Simple present: I say.../Do you have...?/He wears.../Does she like...?/We don’t care.../Grace doesn’t sleep.

• O simple present expressa situações estáveis, hábitos ou atividades regulares, não importando quando começaram ou quando terminarão.

• Fashion accommodates the chameleon in all of us.• Some people don’t like to follow fashion.

• Present progressive: I’m going.../Are you doing...?/Pam isn’t reading.

• O present progressive expressa uma ação temporária acontecendo no momento em que se fala ou se escreve.

• Are you watching the fashion show?• I’m not looking at the catwalk.

• Entretanto, o simple present e o present progressive também podem expressar ideia de futuro. O primeiro* é usado principalmente quando se fala de uma programação.

• O segundo** é usado quando se refere a um compromisso marcado e agendado.

• *The fashion show starts at 9:30.• **Some of the world’s top designers are meeting

tonight.

• Uma sentença com um verbo no present tense pode expressar ideia de passado, como ocorre numa manchete de jornal.

• “Victoria’s Secret Annual Fashion Show Surprises the Audience Again.”

• O mesmo pode ocorrer em uma narrativa, quando se usa o simple present/present progressive no lugar do simple past/past progressive para enfatizar as ações ocorridas no passado:

• You’ll never believe what happened to me yesterday. I’m sitting in this store tryin on shoes, when Brian comes in and gives me these beautiful flowers.
