Sacramento (/ˌsækrəˈmɛntoʊ/) is the capital city of the U.S. state of California and the seat of government of Sacramento County. It is at the confluence of the Sacramento River and the American River in the northern portion of California's expansive Central Valley. Its estimated 2014 population of 485,199 made it the sixth-largest city in California.[9] Sacramento is the cultural and economic core of the Sacramento metropolitan area, which includes seven counties with a 2010 population of 2,414,783.[12] Its metropolitan area is the fourth largest in California after the Greater Los Angeles area, the San Francisco Bay Area, and the San Diego metropolitan area, and is the 27th largest in the United States. In 2002, the Civil Rights Project at Harvard University conducted for TIME magazine named Sacramento "America's Most Diverse City".[1]
Sacramento hotels remain on pace for stronger lodging business than 2014, which was the best year locally since 2007. The average room rate in Sacramento in through February was $109.50, up 4.3 percent from $104.98 through the first two months last year, according to research from PKF Consulting in San Francisco. Average occupancy in Sacramento in through February was 68.3 percent, up from 66.6 percent the year earlier. January and February are typically slow months for hotel traffic in Sacramento. In February, hoteliers continued to press for higher room rates. The average rate was $109.97, up 4.1 percent from $105.69 the previous February. The occupancy rate slipped slightly from the year earlier, from 71 percent to 69.5 percent this February. Upcoming Events BizDev: I'm on LinkedIn. Now What? August 26, 2015 2015 Annual Sacramento Area Sustainable Business of the Year Awards September 24, 2015 Health & Benefits, Trends and Innovations September 11, 2015 See More Events The trend of increasing local rates is driving a resurgence of development plans in the region, which was hit hard by overbuilding up to 2008 and then the recession. After an eight-year lull in development, new hotel proposals have sprung up in the region, including the mixed-use tower that the
Sacramento Kings will build next to the downtown arena and a hotel at Sacramento International Airport. Additionally, three hotel projects are proposed in West Sacramento, along with one project in Placerville and a hotel tower and convention center in Davis. The highest rate market in Northern California through the first two months was San Francisco, where the average rate is $254.25, up 9.3 percent from the previous year period. The market with the highest occupancy was San Francisco Airport, with occupancy of 79 percent, down slightly from 79.9 percent in the first two months last year.
