Era uma vez uma Galinha e uma Águiaque eram muito amigas. Viviam em pazcom todos os outros pássaros. Nenhumconseguia voar.

Once upon a time, Hen and Eagle werefriends. They lived in peace with all theother birds. None of them could fly.

Um dia, chegou a fome. A Águia tinha queandar muito para encontrar comida evoltava se sentindo muito cansada. “Temque ter uma forma mais fácil de viajar!”,dizia a Águia.

One day, there was famine in the land.Eagle had to walk very far to find food.She came back very tired. “There must bean easier way to travel!” said Eagle.

Depois de uma boa noite de sono, aGalinha teve uma ideia brilhante.Começou a recolher as penas que caíamdos outros pássaros. “Vamos costurá-lasem cima das nossas penas”, sugeriu.“Talvez fique mais fácil de nosmovimentarmos”.

After a good night’s sleep, Hen had abrilliant idea. She began collecting thefallen feathers from all their bird friends.“Let’s sew them together on top of ourown feathers,” she said. “Perhaps that willmake it easier to travel.”

A Águia era a única de toda a aldeia comuma agulha, e por isso, foi a primeira acomeçar a costurar. Fez um par de lindasasas e voou sobre a Galinha. A Galinhapediu a agulha emprestada mas ficoulogo cansada de costurar. Deixou aagulha no armário e foi para a cozinhapreparar comida para os seus filhos.

Eagle was the only one in the village witha needle, so she started sewing first. Shemade herself a pair of beautiful wings andflew high above Hen. Hen borrowed theneedle but she soon got tired of sewing.She left the needle on the cupboard andwent into the kitchen to prepare food forher children.

Mas os outros pássaros tinham visto aÁguia voando. Pediram à Galinha paraemprestar a eles a agulha para quetambém pudessem fazer asas para eles.Em breve, havia pássaros voando por todoo lado.

But the other birds had seen Eagle flyingaway. They asked Hen to lend them theneedle to make wings for themselves too.Soon there were birds flying all over thesky.

Quando o último pássaro devolveu aagulha que tinha pedido emprestada, aGalinha não estava. Então, os seus filhosagarraram a agulha e começaram abrincar com ela. Quando ficaramcansados de brincar, deixaram a agulhana areia.

When the last bird returned the borrowedneedle, Hen was not there. So her childrentook the needle and started playing withit. When they got tired of the game, theyleft the needle in the sand.

Essa tarde, regressou a Águia. Pediu aagulha para arranjar algumas penas quetinham se soltado durante o percurso. AGalinha olhou para o armário, procurouno pátio, mas não encontrava a agulha.

Later that afternoon, Eagle returned. Sheasked for the needle to fix some feathersthat had loosened on her journey. Henlooked on the cupboard. She looked in thekitchen. She looked in the yard. But theneedle was nowhere to be found.

“Me dê um dia”, pediu à Águia. “Depois,pode juntar as suas asas e voltar a sairpara procurar comida”. “Só te dou maisum dia”, disse a Águia. “Se não conseguirencontrar a agulha, terá que me dar umdos teus pintinhos para compensar”.

“Just give me a day,” Hen begged Eagle.“Then you can fix your wing and fly awayto get food again.” “Just one more day,”said Eagle. “If you can’t find the needle,you’ll have to give me one of your chicksas payment.”

Quando a Águia voltou no dia seguinte,viu a Galinha ciscando na areia, mas aindanão tinha encontrado a agulha. Então, aÁguia voou muito rápido e apanhou umdos pintinhos, levando-o com ela. Sempreque a Águia volta depois disso, encontra aGalinha ciscando a areia à procura daagulha.

When Eagle came the next day, she foundHen scratching in the sand, but no needle.So Eagle flew down very fast and caughtone of the chicks. She carried it away.Forever after that, whenever Eagleappears, she finds Hen scratching in thesand for the needle.

Assim que a sombra das asas da Águia semostra no chão, a Galinha avisa ospintinhos: “Saiam da terra seca!” E elesrespondem: “Não somos loucos. Vamoscorrer”.

As the shadow of Eagle’s wing falls on theground, Hen warns her chicks. “Get out ofthe bare and dry land.” And they respond:“We are not fools. We will run.”
