PAROCHIAL VICAR’S LETTER As we bring our considera!ons of the First Commandment to a close, we look today at some areas we might not think to fall under this commandment. These are the areas regarding the Sacraments. The Sacraments are given by God in order to give us His grace and in order to con!nue the work of Jesus. Since only God can be the Author of grace, only He can determine

how that grace is going to be given. Therefore, the Sacraments are all ins!tuted by God; to violate them in any way is a viola!on of the First Commandment. Most importantly, the Holy Eucharist is Jesus, the second Person of the Holy Trinity, so any viola!on of the Eucharist is not only a viola!on of the First Commandment, but it is a viola!on of God Himself. So, we begin with the point of receiving Holy Communion with a mortal sin on our soul. This means having commi#ed a mortal sin, but not having confessed it. Remember, we must be in the State of Grace to receive grace, and since the Sacraments are the means God has chosen to give us His grace, we must be in the State of Grace to receive the Sacraments (Bap!sm and Confession are obviously different). To receive Holy Communion, Holy Matrimony, Holy Orders, or Confirma!on while in the state of mortal sin is a sacrilege. That means it is the worst kind of a mortal sin. If one is confirmed, married, or ordained while in the state of mortal sin, the Sacrament is validly received, but no grace is received by the soul. What this means is that a person does not have to be confirmed, married, or ordained again, because the Sacrament was validly received, but no grace can be received un!l the person goes to confession to have the mortal sin removed from his soul. Of course, one must remember to confess the sacrilege of receiving the Sacraments while being in the state of mortal sin. The grace of the Sacrament will be given retroac!vely to the soul at the moment absolu!on is received. Holy Communion is different from the others in that the actual Sacrament itself is confected at the altar, not at the communion rail. In other words, if we receive Holy Communion while in the state of mortal sin, there is no Sacrament received nor is any grace received. Instead, the only thing we receive is a sacrilege on our soul. St. Paul, in his First Le#er to the Corinthians says: “Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, will be guilty of profaning the Body and Blood of the Lord” (1 Cor 11:27). Clearly, St. Paul is not talking about ea!ng or drinking in a way that is sloppy or unbecoming of our dignity; rather, he is talking about viola!ng our Lord’s dignity. So, in keeping with the First Commandment, please be sure to go to confession before receiving any of the Sacraments. While we are on the topic of the Holy Eucharist, it needs to be stated that any form of desecra!on of the Eucharist is also a viola!on of the First Commandment. Not only is such an act a mortal sin, it is also a sacrilege and it carries with it an automa!c excommunica!on. Desecra!on of the Eucharist would be somehow viola!ng the Sacred Host inten!onally. For instance, throwing the Host on the ground, stomping on the Host, selling a

Host, pu'ng a consecrated Host in your wedding album, flushing the Host down the toilet, etc. You get the point; such an act would have to be serious and inten!onal. Forgiveness of the sin and removal of the excommunica!on can come only from the Va!can. The person would go to confession as usual, but the priest would have to write to Rome in order to receive permission to give the person absolu!on and to remove the excommunica!on. Marriage is another area where people have become very lax. We are now at a point where fewer than 20% of all marriages take place in a church. Remember, for the marriage of a Catholic person to be valid, the person must be married according to Catholic form. This means being married in the church building, in front of a priest or deacon, while using the correct from of the vows as given by the Church. If a Catholic person wishes to marry a non-Catholic, a dispensa!on can be given by the Bishop. A second dispensa!on would have to be granted for the Catholic party to be married in a Protestant church building. Because of the holiness of the Sacrament, the Church will not give a dispensa!on to be married in a judge’s office, at the Mall of America, at home plate or the fi-y-yard line, etc. If a Catholic person is married in a Protestant church without a dispensa!on, that marriage would not be recognized by the Church as a valid marriage. It is a civil marriage, but not Sacramental. A person in such a circumstance would not be able to receive any other Sacrament un!l such !me that the marriage is validated. This means that the couple would need to work with a priest to prepare to make their vows according to Catholic form. If thought is being given to ge'ng married to a non-Catholic person, please work with a priest to get the necessary dispensa!ons so that your marriage will be recognized as a Sacrament. If you are in a situa!on in which you got married outside the church without a dispensa!on, please, contact a priest to begin working on what is called a “con-valida!on,” that is, making a civil or legal marriage into a Sacramental marriage. If a married and divorced person a#empts a marriage without a Declara!on of Nullity (annulment) being granted for the first marriage, not only will the Church not recognize the marriage, but no dispensa!on can be given because the validity of the first marriage must be upheld un!l it is proven to have been invalid. This means the person is s!ll married, even if the State has granted a divorce, and any a#empt to marry another, according to our Lord’s own words, is adultery (Mt 19:9, Mk 10:12). If you are divorced and think there is reason to believe your previous marriage was not valid (something was very wrong at the moment the vows were made), please contact a priest to begin work on an annulment. A person is not permi#ed even to date another if their previous marriage is not annulled. So, if you just want peace of mind regarding the status of your marriage or if you think you might want to marry someone in the future, please take the necessary measures now so you will not have to be concerned about them if you should decide you want to consider marriage with another person.

Eucharis!c Adora!on Contact Be#y Kreuter 763-537-1399

Have you ever sat in the gaze of the Lord in Adora!on? Ever just sat and stared? Some!mes it’s in absolute simplicity that we can most easily ask the Lord to show us His love and receive it from Him. Take some !me today (or very soon) to visit the Lord in Adora!on.

If you are able to visit each week at the same hour, perhaps you can make a commitment to that hour. Please contact Be#y at the number above to let her know you want to be added to the schedule of commi#ed adorers.

There is an immediate need for new adorers on: Sundays: 6:00-7:00 am; Mondays: 1:00-2:00 am; Wednesdays: 4:00-5:00 am;

Saturdays: 2:00-3:00 pm; and midnight - 1:00 am (Saturday midnight to Sunday early morning). It is not necessary to choose one of these hours, however, the requirement for Perpetual Adora!on is to have at least one commi#ed adorer at each hour every day and night of each week.

If you would be able to be a subs!tute for an hour of prayer, please contact Barb at 763-971-8460 to be added to the Subs!tute List at the hour(s) or day(s) that you could be available. On this list you are always able to state that you are unable to a#end when you are contacted.

I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me. ~ Psalm 30 Responsorial Psalm

SAINT OF THE DAY - SAINT WIBORADA

Wiborada was born in Switzerland in the Ninth Century. She worked for some years at the monastery of Saint Gall, where her brother Ha#o was a student. Her job was as a bookbinder for the abbey library. When her parents died, she moved in with her brother, who was now out of school and working in a church. He taught her La!n so she could pray the Liturgy of the Hours with him. In their house she took care of sick people. Wiborada and Ha#o made a pilgrimage to Rome, a-er which Ha#o decided to become a monk. She decided to con!nue living as a lay woman. Eventually she became a hermitess, living alone in a room a#ached to a church. She spent the last eleven years of her life there. She is believed to have accomplished a number of remarkable ac!vi!es, including the healing of someone who suffered from an apparently incurable disease. She also warned the local clergy of an impending invasion by Hungarians. They escaped in !me. She decided to stay in her cell and was killed there by the invaders with a hatchet. Saint Wiborada, pray for us!
