da licenciatura, do mestrado e do doutoramento. A experimentao na cor envolveu dispositivos de leitura cromtica, caixas de
luz e cor e prottipos de material pedaggico e didctico.
Os aspectos tecnolgicos foram abordados na perspectiva da relao entre o utente do webdesign e as interaces cromticas
e na da expresso da cor na moda, com destaque para o seu papel na criao de uma coleco de vesturio. Os dados que
envolvem o mapeamento da activao neuronal e as conexes da cor com o vesturio foram inspeccionados segundo os
resultados e as descobertas da neurocincia referentes s emoes e viso - aspectos que revelam um conjunto novo de
proposies, quando o corpo se encontra deslocado do seu eixo gravitacional.
Para alm de propostas que integraram a simbologia, a metfora e a analogia no contexto de variveis diversificadas (espao-
tempo, luz-cor, sombra-reflexo, movimento-materialidade, binica e biomimtica...), questes houve que relacionaram a cor com
a sinalizao, a orientao e a identificao foram estudadas do ponto de vista do design escala urbana, ao encontro das
preocupaes com a leitura da cor pela viso envelhecida e a legibilidade no mbito da comunicao visual e do design inclusivo.
Ao levantar questes relativamente a uma rea do saber, cada disciplina desloca as fronteiras estabelecidas de campos potenciais
espera de nova germinao em futuros encontros. A riqueza do espectro de significados e sentidos criados pela oscilao
dessas fronteiras entre as temticas gnoseolgicas fica registada no lxico. O aprofundamento dos estudos multifacetados sobre
a cor no escapa a essa realidade, pelo que uma outra actividade da APCOR consiste no estudo do lxico da cor.
Enfim, encarando-se sob quaisquer modos de sensibilidade e de experincias o contributo da cor para a transformao civilizada
do mundo visvel, com feliz encanto que, dado o contributo das realizaes das actividades da APCOR e do empenhamento
dos seus Associados, cabalmente se entende a razo pela qual os que se dedicam indagao e compreenso dos mistrios
da cor se tm tornado humanos cromgenos.
The Associao Portuguesa da Cor-APCOR was created in the context of the Faculty of Architecture-Lisbon TechnicalUniversity Master Course Colour in Architecture, in 2003. Still at an embryonic stage, this footprint - that is also ahistorical landmark-ties the core activities of the APCOR to research and education as a means to further knowledge.That is why the most endemic feature of the APCOR resides in its capacity to nourish activities leading to seriousstudy and trustworthy communication with the communities that colour connects.
In 2008, projects developed by the APCOR are either purely speculative, or empirical, or otherwise integrative of boththeory and praxis. Colour plans were made for original architectural and urban structures or to rehabilitate a historiccentre, quarter, or interior. In the classroom, theoretical teachings of colour were integrated at different levels ofeducation within various fields and disciplines. Experimentation was made with devices and prototypes and used asdidactic and pedagogical material. Technological aspects were addressed on how chromatic interactions of visualityestablish interfaces between webdesign and the user, or how colour may express itself in fashion design. Signage,orientation and identification studied from a design standpoint at urban scale met with concerns that relate colour,legibility and aged vision in the field of visual communication and inclusive design. Questions that involve mappingneuronal activations and connections of colour and clothing inspected neuroscience findings relative to emotions andvisual perception, aspects that disclose a different array of propositions when the body is dislocated from its gravitationalaxis. In architecture, the study of the material and immaterial components extended from the contemporary to historicplaces to reveal the relevance of colour in the creation of a sense of place and collective belonging. A phenomenologicalawareness to light, space and architecture provided meaning to a territory where philosophy and architecture arebound in concepts of shelter and care. Other proposals integrated symbology, metaphor and analogy in the contextof variables such as space-time, light-colour, shadow-reflection, movement-materiality, bionics and biomimetics.
Colour is a transdisciplinary field and its lexicon testifies to that by reflecting a large spectrum of meanings. Howeverwhen each discipline raises questions, a chain of thought and findings shifts the established boundaries, as a galaxyof potential fields waiting to germinate into new encounters. In all modes of sensibility and experience, colour has atransformative power on the visible realm. It is with a feeling of wonder and joy that I realise how chromogenousdwellers on the mysteries of colour have become.

A Associao Portuguesa da Cor / APCOR foi criada em 2003,
no contexto do "Mestrado em Cor na Arquitectura", realizado
na Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade Tcnica de
Lisboa. Ainda numa fase embrionria, a APCOR j afectava
as suas actividades investigao e educao para o
progresso do conhecimento dos fenmenos da cor e para
uma utilizao prtica e sustentvel dos resultados no
ambiente. Por isso, a caracterstica mais marcante e distintiva
da APCOR reside na sua vocao para, de modo competente
e empenhado, fomentar actividades que produzam estudos
e realizaes srias na rea da cor, com o oportuno
envolvimento da comunidade. Em particular, no ano de 2008,
entre os projectos desenvolvidos pela APCOR registam-se
os puramente especulativos, os empricos e os integradores
da teoria e da prxis.
Em arquitectura, foram feitos estudos cromticos que incidiram
sobre a concepo original de estruturas arquitectnicas ou
que se destinaram a reabilitar centros histricos, interiores e
bairros, enquanto o estudo de componentes materiais e
imateriais se estendia dos lugares histricos aos
contemporneos, dada a importncia da cor na criao de
um sentido de lugar e de pertena colectiva. Um despertar
fenomenolgico das relaes entre a luz, o espao e a
arquitectura levou significado a um territrio onde a filosofia
e a arquitectura se ligam atravs de conceitos como os de
"abrigo" e "cuidado".
Na sala de aula, os ensinamentos tericos da cor foram
integrados em disciplinas e reas do mbito do ensino
secundrio e do universitrio, tendo-se processado ao nvel

2008 was another fruitful year for the
contribution of our members to colour
education at various levels ranging from
secondary school to university, on
undergraduate programmes as well as master
and doctoral degrees.
Master of Colour in Architecture Margarida
Gamito held the teaching responsibility and
coordination of "Chromatic Analysis" at IADE-
Escola Superior de Design. Master of Colour
in Architecture Joo Perno taught "Light and
Colour" at the School of Architecture of
FAUTL. Master of Colour in Architecture Zlia
Simes taught "Form and Colour", at ISEC -
Institute of Education and Sciences and
Communication Design in ESTAL - School of
Technologies and Arts of Lisbon. Master of
Colour in Architecture Cristina Pinheiro held
teaching activity at IADE-Escola Superior de
Design on the subject of "Chromatic Analysis".
Master of Colour in Architecture Helena Soares
lectured "Colour, Light and Matter", ESAD -
School of Art and Design in Matosinhos and
"Colour" at Secondary School D.Dinis, in St.
Tirso. Prof. Dr. Manuel Pais Clemente lectured
on the mechanisms of sight and perception
at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Porto.
Prof. Dr. Maria Joo lectured "Anthropology
of Vision", for the Master Course in Design,
FAUTL and presented a proposal to coordinate
the "Programme of Advanced Studies in
Colour in Architecture and Design", leading
towards Doctoral Studies, approved by the
Scientific Council of the FAUTL.

COLOUR STUDIES OF THE HISTORIC CENTRE OF PORTO
This project originated the dissertation "THE COLOURS OF
PORTO" , with which Helena Soares was awarded the degree
of Master in Colour in Architecture of the FAUTL, 2008
(superviser: Maria Joo Duro; co-superviser:Jean Philippe
Lenclos)
O projecto baseia-se em estudos desenvolvidos por Jean-
Philippe Lenclos, que defende a importncia do contexto
situacional como critrio para a escolha das cores de um local,
e fundamenta-se em anlises eminentemente visuais que
procuram registar a especificidade cromtica de um local,
atravs da informao de cor disponvel. A adopo de tais
procedimentos implica o reconhecimento de que a reconstituio
do vocabulrio bsico garante que as propostas de paletas de
cor se articulem coerentemente com aspectos de natureza
urbanstica e arquitectnica, salvaguardando os aspectos
regionais identitrios da cor do local. Foi realizado um estudo
das cores permanentes fornecidas por elementos estveis com
um carcter visual durvel e susceptveis de levantamento, ou
registo, tais como: os materiais de construo, a pedra, as
cermicas do lugar, mas tambm os minerais dos solos que
serviram de pigmentos. As cores no permanentes so as que
dependem de factores variveis, como a infinita mudana da
luz e do clima, a vegetao ao longo do ano, a luz do cu ou
dos rios, etc.
A study of the colours of Porto in the context of the space
presently occupied by the town. Colour and town are
simultaneously and alternately the focus and the pretext of the
investigation that based its methodology on Jean-Philippe
Lenclos' and used the NCS system for colour codification. It
is an essay both detailed and global, conceptual and sensorial,
technical and artistic. We believe that each place has its own
chromatism, resulting from the interaction between the geological
and climatic conditions, the local construction materials, the
cultural and societal traditions. The colours used in such contexts
bear artistic and historic dimensions and so the search for the
identity of a city requires methodological strategies such as
visual records of images in their real context, i.e. in the presence
of architectural configurations of urban scale, detailed facade
features, volumes and textures and their complex interrelations
with light, among others.

Esta investigao baseia-se numa abordagem fenomenolgica
e transdisciplinar, enquadrando o fenmeno cromtico numa
perspectiva de percepo das suas qualidades enquanto gerador
da imagem fsica da realidade e, consequentemente, dos
objectos e espaos construdos. Foi desenvolvido este dispositivo
especial para servir o propsito de observar e comparar as
cores da realidade como ns as percepcionamos, na sua
multiplicidade de situaes no espao, directamente iluminadas
ou em sombra, com pouca ou muita intensidade lumnica.. O
aparelho possui um iluminante prprio de caractersticas
conhecidas e constantes que permite, ao mesmo tempo, a
comparao entre amostras de cor por ele iluminadas e a cor
aparente percepcionada directamente da realidade.
The prototype of this device was created by Joo Nuno Perno
for the Master Dissertation "The Interpretation of Reality as
Colour Variation due to Light in Space and in Time" and is
developed in his doctoral research project, "The Interpretation
of Reality Through Colour: Measurement, Registration, Analysis,
and Application of Psychometric Data for the Establishment of
Chromatic Invariables in Perception" supervised by Prof. Dr.
Maria Joo Duro. Once there is no known process or device
that produces the same results, it was necessary to create a
specific device that serves the purpose of observing and
comparing colours from reality as we see it through our eyes,
in their multiplicity of situations in space, directly illuminated or
in shadow, and with different light intensity. This device allows
a direct and perceptual colour reading of the surfaces that can
be compared with reference samples and autonomous and
constant lighting conditions.

A investigao prope-se aprofundar o conhecimento do territrio
conceptual iniciado por Calatrava na tese de doutoramento
"Zur Faltbarkeit von Fachwerken", sobre o conceito tecnolgico
da 'dobrabilidade das estruturas', que gerou um thesaurus de
todos os possveis poliedros dobrveis numa analogia com as
estruturas compactas que a aeronutica procura desenvolver,
estveis e de fcil transporte. O corpo humano, segundo as
notas e os desenhos de Calatrava, entendido como estrutura
dobrvel, com variadssimas configuraes, posturas e posies,
com ressonncia nas estruturas edificadas, pelo que a
investigao privilegiar o conhecimento desse factor
determinante na sua concepo e realizao arquitectnica,
segundo um ponto de vista simblico, metafrico e analgico,
no contexto das variveis espao-tempo, luz-cor, sombra-
reflexo, movimento-materialidade nas vertentes cientfica,
tecnolgica e artstica. A investigao procurar, ainda, esclarecer
o continuum criativo do disegno segundo a metfora arquetpica
da linha e da cor, o conhecimento reflectido do comportamento
biolgico - em particular o ptico - e a prtica experiente da
binica e da biomimtica.
The research project explores a conceptual territory initiated
by Calatrava with his doctoral thesis on technological concept
of foldability, "Zur Faltbarkeit von Fachwerken", that generated
a thesaurus of possible folding structures in an analogy to
compact and movable components that the field of aeronautics
aims to explore. Calatrava's sketches depict the human body
as a foldable structure and a key factor in his architectural work,
from a point of view that integrates symbology, metaphor and

of this project is to research the creative continuum of disegno
in his body of work according to archetypical metaphors of line
but also of colour, the knowledge of biological behaviour - the

O projecto "A cor como abrigo: a Arquitectura como cuidado"
tem por objectivo fortalecer a relao entre a Teoria da Cor de
J. W. Goethe (1749-1832) e a Arquitectura. O mtodo de
orientao o da Fenomenologia, tendo por referncias
principais Goethe, Wittgenstein, Husserl, Heidegger, Gilles
Deleuze, Norberg-Schulz, Frank Lloyd Wright and Tadao Ando
tendo, essencialmente com vista compreenso do conceito
de espao. Pondo-se em evidncia a forte relao entre a
Teoria da Cor e a Arquitectura, feita uma reflexo sobre a
Arquitectura de ambientes de prestao de cuidados mdicos,
no sentido de se entender "a Arquitectura como cuidado"
(Heidegger) na sua extenso mxima.
The project has its main focus on Goethe's Theory of Colour
(Zur Farbenlehre, 1810). In order to best describe this theory
a phenomenological approach is taken on the subject of space
(where colour manifests itself) and on architecture (being the
art that has space, surface and shelter as its raw materials).
This research considers that the most relevant aspect of colour
is the fact that it expresses light. Therefore the physical aspect
(and not the psychological or physiological) in relation with its
ontological element prevails. Goethe, Wittgenstein, Husserl,
Heidegger, Gilles Deleuze, Norberg-Schulz, Frank Lloyd Wright
and Tadao Ando are taken as main references.

Exploram-se as qualidades perceptivas do azulejo, material
cermico de revestimento de paramentos, enquanto veculo
de cor na arquitectura, nomeadamente no espao exterior, e
o modo como a sua presena se constitui como diferenciadora
da qualidade do percebido, atravs de uma pesquisa transversal
na rea da percepo e das variaes das suas condies,
com as suas condicionantes psicolgicas, sociolgicas e
fisiolgicas e pelo cruzamento de dados obtidos atravs da
experimentao e observao directa. Realiza-se tambm uma
abordagem perceptiva em sincronia e diacronia baseada na
seleco das reas geogrficas relevantes para a construo
de um tecido de resultados fidedignos que conduzam
clarificao dos temas propostos e permitam fornecer dados
concretos aos que trabalham a cor no espao urbano.
A study on the perceptive qualities of the azulejo (tile) cladding,
as colour in architecture, and its contribution to the physical
and emotional quality of the built environment. Through a
transversal approach in areas as perception, (and perception
variations namely, lighting and observing conditions like distance,
viewing angle, socio cultural and geographic contexts),
physiology, sociology, psychology and colorimetric.
Using a perceptual approach based on a "Synchronic and
Diachronic" method of analysis of strategically chosen case
studies, cross-correlated with colorimetric measurements this
investigation aims to clarify the perceptual potential of ceramic
tiles, as colour in architecture, being cladding or work of art, to
those working with colour in the built environment.

Study of the potential of colour when applied to the design
of space habitats and how it can increase human wellbeing
living or working in these habitats. The U.S. Destiny
Laboratory Module is used as case study to examine the
impact that different combinations of colour have in
confined and extreme environments. However, Lab
experimentation is carried out using virtual simulators to
apply colours to the overhead, deck, starboard and port
and equipment allowing a complex array of aspects of
colour to be considered. Simulation of perceptual processes
and movement are other key factors implicated in the
relations between colour and the body in weightless.

ERGONOMY OF WEB COLOUR
Ana Louro was awarded the degree of Master in Design
of the FAUTL, 2008 with this project and the dissertation
"ERGONOMY OF WEB COLOUR: INTERFACE VERSUS
USER" (Superviser: Maria Joo Duro)
Este estudo, de natureza emprica, consistiu na criao
de um site testado com alunos de vrias instituies
acadmicas, partindo do site do Laboratrio da Cor.
Resultou do cruzamento das interaces cromticas da
visualidade com os fundamentos do design grfico tendo
por objectivo a criao de uma interface entre o webdesign
-
e o utilizador. Fez-se o levantamento de opinies de
especialistas em programao para a web, da cor, do
tratamento de inquritos e da prtica do design. Avaliou-
se a sensibilidade dos alunos atravs de inquritos, com
trs partes distintas: caracterizao pessoal, opes
relativas s relaes cromticas, harmonias, ergonomia
e associaes simblicas estabelecidas pelos alunos.
An empirical study grounded the creation of a site that
was tested with students of academic institutions of Art,
Design and Architecture at the Faculdade de Arquitectura
de Lisboa, Universidade Lusfona de Humanidades e
Tecnologias and IADE. The evaluation of the students'
opinion and sensibilities was carried out with the data
gathering techniques such as questionnaires in three
parts: personal characterization, options relative to
chromatic relations, harmonies, ergonomy and analysis
of associations made by the students. The complexity of
chromatic interactions of visuality together with the
fundamentals of graphic design established an interface
between webdesign and the user.

A Caixa de Luz e Cor foi criada, na fase de prottipo, no
mbito da disciplina optativa "Luz e Cor", integrada no
3 Ano curricular da Licenciatura de Arquitectura de
Interiores, Departamento de Arquitectura, Seco de
Projecto. O interesse manifestado pelos alunos de
diversas licenciaturas relativamente aos resultados obtidos
pela utilizao do prottipo nas aulas, bem como a
possibilidade de com ele se poder investigar de uma
forma experimental directa relaes entre cor e luz,
justificaram o seu desenvolvimento, pelo que passou a
constituir um material didctico e pedaggico de
divulgao e promoo do interesse pelo fenmeno
cromtico na sua vertente experimental.
The Light and Colour Box was created, as a prototype,
for the discipline "Luz e Cor" (Light and Colour), 3rd. year
of Interior Architecture, FAUTL. The development of this
prototype was considered due to the interest of the
students of different courses of the FAUTL in this "light
and colour box", as well as the possibility of experimental
research on the field of light and colour relationships.
This device can show perceptual colour variations with
different light sources and colour filters and it can also
compare perceptual colour variations with different
materials and textures. This prototype become a didactic
and pedagogic material with growing importance in the
divulgation and promotion of the colour phenomenom in
this University, and apart from its primary objective as a
support for teaching perceptual colour variations, it could
be seen as a tool for investigation in this field.

Pretende-se investigar os mtodos criativos do design
da moda envolvidos nos processos da concepo e
representao. Isto , compreender e definir atravs da
criao de uma teoria de fundo as bases conceptuais
que estruturam o pensamento e a prtica da criao da
coleco de vesturio. Atravs da pesquisa e recolha
de dados feita junto de designers de relevo em actividade,

E ainda compreender o grau de importncia atribudo
aos esboos e ilustraes, bem como das manchas e
conjugaes de cor feitas no acto de desenhar as peas
de vesturio.
This project was born out of the need to understand and
define the issues that relate to creativity that are revealed
in the conception of clothing in the overall context of
Fashion Design. The research aims to evaluate the
relevance of colour and its manifold uses by designers
during the process that leads to a design collection.
Exploratory interviews and observation techniques,
sketches, illustrations and all the drawing procedures
used by Ana Salazar; Alves/Gonalves; Jos Antnio
Tenente; Lus Buchinho and Alexandra Moura are used
as research material.

Project of (re)colouring of Bairro das Alagoas in Rgua
facades, buildings, equipments and external environment.
The study includes a previous analysis of the physical
and socio-cultural context; the characterization of the
chromatic contextualization. Development of proposals
considers each building colours within a concept of colour
in accordance with a total integrative chromatic plan, so
that but each unit is individualized in terms of colour
choices yet allowing for colour connections to be
established in the quarter as a whole, as a means to
achieve a sense of collective belonging of bairro.

O estudo desenvolve as implicaes que os conhecimentos
neurolgicos adquirem enquanto base da relao afectiva
estabelecida com o vesturio. O objectivo desta investigao
consiste em interpretar esse processo para se conhecer a
forma como esta experincia vivida pelo ser humano e da
extrair o entendimento de comportamentos associados.
O sistema complexo de recolha de dados integra um estudo
de fMRI - Imagem de Ressonncia Magntica funcional, a que
se juntam entrevistas exploratrias incidentes sobre o sentido
e o significado do vesturio na nossa vida e ainda uma extensa
reviso bibliogrfica relativa ao processo neurolgico da
percepo visual dos objectos, da cor e das emoes.
The project is based on neuroscience findings relative to
emotions and visual perception of objects and colour and its
application to design by exploring their implications on the
affective relationship we maintain with clothing. This process
involves mapping of neuronal activations and connections of
colour and clothing and the analysis of variation caused by
colour. In terms of visual perception, the understanding of the
nature of this relationship requires the use of a complex system
of data gathering techniques that integrate an extensive literature
review pertaining to neurological findings in visual perception
of artefacts, emotions, as well as to the meanings of affective
relationships with clothing, coupled with interviews and functional
magnetic resonance studies.

Research consultancy to institutions of different level of education.
O projecto visa o estabelecimento de um conjunto referencial
de termos, conceitos e significados na rea da cor em lngua
portuguesa. O desenvolvimento desta investigao recorre a
uma anlise sistemtica de diversas publicaes de ndole
cientfica, nacionais e internacionais, que abordam a temtica
da cor e, mais especificamente, o lxico da cor, bem como
pesquisa bibliogrfica de enquadramento no campo da
percepo, nomeadamente no referente importncia da
classificao semntica para o processo cognitivo. Tem por fim
a elaborao de propostas de nomeao dos vrios elementos
supracitados que concorram para um maior rigor da sua
utilizao.
This research aims to establish a body of referential terms,
concepts and signifiers of the Portuguese colour language. It
also aims at a systematization of Portuguese language words
that define colours, in reference to their fundamental dimensions
in chromatic three-dimensional space. The development of this
investigation depends on a systematic analysis of different
publications of scientific scope, both national and international,
within the field of colour and in special those concerned with
colour lexicon. The study requires an extensive bibliographic
research as a framework and rationale in the field of symbology,
anthropology, perception and cognition, as well as semiotics
and semantics.

O Estudo de Cor para os espaos interiores do Hospital de
Santo Andr representa uma importante oportunidade para
compreender e conciliar os aspectos multidisciplinares
decorrentes da aplicao da cor em ambientes construdos
com funcionalidades especficas. Os edifcios hospitalares so
uma rea de interveno em que o estudo cromtico pode
introduzir melhorias considerveis nos aspectos ergonmicos
e de conforto de utilizao tanto nos pacientes como no pessoal
especializado que a intervm.
This study is an important opportunity to understand and
reconcile the multidisciplinar issues arising from application of
colour in built environments with specific functional requirements.
The hospital buildings are an area of intervention in which
colour study may introduce considerable improvements in
comfort and ergonomic aspects, both within the patients and
the medical staff.

O Estudo de Cor para este edifcio definiu um vermelho oxidado
para o exterior que ao mesmo tempo distingue o edifcio e o
integra na envolvente (coberturas metlicas industriais
vermelhas, telha vermelha, tijolo aparente). Esta cor no
representa apenas uma "pele", uma vez que penetra para o
interior dinamizando os espaos de circulao, enquanto que
os espaos de aulas e gabinetes de trabalho so definidos
com cinzentos e ocres claros criando ambientes propcios
concentrao e calma.
The colour study for this building set an oxide red to the outside
surfaces that manage to distinguish the building from its
surroundings and at the same time create a relationship with
the built environment (industrial red metal roof, tile red, brick).
This colour is not only a "skin", since it penetrates into the
interior, accentuating dynamic movement in stairs and halls,
while in classes and offices colours are subdued, working with
gray and clear ochres for creating environments that lead to
concentration and calm.

Este estudo de Cor promoveu uma reflexo sobre a necessidade
de abandonar o branco como cor dita erudita na
reabilitao/alterao de edifcios deste tipo em favor de uma
maior diversidade e subtileza na relao com as caractersticas
e elementos que definem esta especfica envolvente construda.
This study brought the opportunity to re-think the suitability of
using white as an "erudite" colour in the rehabilitation /
modification of this type of buildings, in favor of using other
colours that could give greater diversity and subtlety in the
relationship with the features and elements that define this
particular built environment.

O Estudo de salvaguarda e reabilitao do centro histrico e
frente mar da Nazar promove o discurso da representao
do espao, ao fazer emergir a simbologia da imagem ou
situaes referenciais reflectidas no quotidiano. A configurao
espacial e o imaginrio revelam um conjunto de valores que
constituem a memria, a histria, a aprendizagem e a
interpretao do passado.
Na anlise do lugar, encontram-se diversas composies e
variaes tonais de cores-base cujo efeito se torna peculiar e
importante na criao e recriao da escala humana, no sentido
de espao e na identidade cultural. A manipulao da cor
imprescindvel enquanto instrumento de (re) conformao e
(re)desenho da imagem urbana nas aces de conservao
e nas novas intervenes.
The Study for the historic centre and waterfront preservation
and rehabilitation of Nazar promotes the language of space
representation, emerging the symbolic image or the, referential
reflected on everyday situations. Space configuration and the
imaginary reveal a valuable set which constitutes memory,
history, apprenticeship and the interpretation of the past.
On the place's analysis, there are several compositions and
tonal variations of basis-colours with an effect that becomes
special and important in the creation and re-creation of the
human scale, on the sense of space and cultural identity. The
manipulation of colour is essential as an instrument of
re(configuration) and re(drawing) of the urban image in terms
of conservation and new interventions.

O projecto do Colgio Horizonte revela a seriedade e
institucionalidade como o antigo mas sem as rugas e a tristeza
da idade. Um lugar de convergncia de experincias com a
alegria prpria de um espao para crianas a crescer, para a
descoberta dos sentidos e o aparecimento de emoes que
secretamente tomam conta do imaginrio social e individual.
No estudo da materialidade procuramos sintetizar cdigos e
introduzir valores na composio baseados em princpios
pragmticos, icnicos, analgicos e cannicos. Cor, forma e
matria produzem algo mais que uma imagem dando um
conhecimento da unidade entre a "verdade" dos materiais, as
suas causas e efeitos.
The project for Horizonte School reveals seriousness and
institutionality as the old one but without wrinkles and sadness
of the age. A place of experiences with the joy of a space for
children to grow, for the discovery of senses and the appearance
of emotions that secretly take hold of social and individual
imaginary. In the study of materiality we try to summarize codes
and to introduce values in the composition based on pragmatic,
iconic, analogical and canonical principles. Colour, form and
matter produce something more than an image providing
knowledge of the unity between the "truth" of materials, their
causes (affects) and effects.

Professor Emeritus Architect Byron
Mikellides held academic responsibilities in
the education of colour at Oxford Brookes
University. He edited the book COLOUR FOR
ARCHITECTURE TODAY and presented it at
the AIC 2008 Meeting in Stockholm: where
his presence was very much appreciated
by the members of the APCOR. Designer
and Professor Jean-Philippe Lenclos
dedicated his time to painting and writing a
book on colour that we look forward to
reading. Pofessor Frank Mahnke published
the book COLOR COMMUNICATION IN
ARCHITECTURAL SPACE and lectured
colour at the IACC seminars. Professor
Catedrtico Lus Badosa taught colour
relationships in art classes at the
Universidad del Pais Vasco highlighting the
relevance of light by showing how the soul
and spirit of a painting is captured in its
luminosity. He explored the themes of the
sacred and spirituality in the context of
symbolic expressions of colour in art and
architecture, while his activities extended
to the organization of exhibitions on
Industrial Heritage and the editorial
responsibilities of FABRIKART. Professor
Emeritus Architect Pancho Miranda Guedes
started organizing the retrospective
exhibition of his work of architecture,
painting and sculpture to take place at the
Museu Coleco Berardo in Lisbon (18th
May 2009) and receives the Laurea Honoris
Causa awarded by the Lisbon Technical
University on the 18th February 2009.

In the General Assembly Meeting of 19 April 2008 a member
of APCOR, Prof. Dr. Manuel Pais Clemente suggested the
creation of a day for the celebration of colour on an
international and world scale. The idea was received with
great enthusiasm by the Assembly. The following proposal
was presented to the AIC Executive Committee at the AIC
2008 Interim Meeting in Stockholm by the President of the
APCOR and posted in the AIC e-news of December 2008.

A luz e a cor so indissociveis da gnese, estruturao e
desenvolvimento do universo, pelo que sempre tm afectado
toda a forma de vida natural ou o modo de ser e estar da
humanidade, sobretudo no que respeita influncia da luz
solar e da luz lunar, sem esquecer a dos demais astros, a luz
do fogo, a de certas pedras preciosas ou a luz elctrica, entre
outras fontes lumnicas.
A luz do dia entra na significao primitiva dos vocbulos "deus"
e "Zeus"; a cor leitosa justifica a designao da Lua; "Lcifer"
o anjo portador da luz, alm de designar o planeta Vnus -
vocbulo cujo sentido etimolgico 'seduo'. A luz / o lume
dos olhos est na base da viso e da percepo das cores. A
luz fonte de vida e de entendimento, dissolve terrores e
pesadelos e afasta os fantasmas. A luz um agente da frmula
einsteiniana e=mc2 e um referente de doutrinas escatolgicas.
Aquiles, no Hades, ressentiu a falta dos raios vivificantes do
Sol, e preferia, por isso, ser escravo entre os vivos a reinar
sobre as sombras esvadas que o rodeavam (Od., XI, 498)...
A cor um produto da aco conjugada da luz, do difano,
dos objectos fsicos, da categoria espao-tempo, dos campos
electromagnticos, do movimento, da velocidade, da estrutura
das substncias... A cor - referncia real e principal da viso
- est presente nos espectros da luz, do som, das temperaturas
e das radiaes. A cor afecta o conceito de beleza, de harmonia
e de vida feliz. A cor conspira no acasalamento da maioria dos
animais e favorece a polinizao das flores, condiciona os
estados da alma, a imaginao criadora, o gosto de viver, os
ritmos biolgicos. A cor regista os efeitos do tempo e dos
factores meteorolgicos e qumicos sobre os elementos e as
espcies naturais. A cor o agente catalisador mais privilegiado
que opera na percepo sensorial, como se v por inmeras
expresses sinestsicas. A cor est presente na expresso
artstica, na formulao e comunicao dos sentimentos, na
diferenciao de diversidades (raas, nacionalidades, grupos,
ideologias...), nas sinalticas artificiais e naturais, no culto
religioso, na concepo mitolgica, na construo da
camuflagem, na formao do pensamento analgico...
A abrangncia com que tais fenmenos interferem, em particular,
na vida e na cultura do ser humano justifica que se lhes dedique
um marco anual e universal de reflexo e informao que
incremente uma aco pedaggica, mais incisiva e eficaz,
tendente sensibilizao para a importncia da luz e da cor
na formao, manuteno e aperfeioamento da vida fsica e
psquica, na criao de um ambiente natural mais harmonioso,
na actualizao do conhecimento de aspectos cientficos,
tcnicos, artsticos, ecolgicos e culturais.
Deseja-se, enfim, que esse dia celebre actividades e eventos
que promovam a partilha dos conhecimentos relacionados com
a luz e a cor.

CARTA DEL ADIOS' FOR PROFESSOR RIKARD KULLER
On behalf of the Associao Portuguesa da Cor-APCOR I
would like share with you the sentiments for the loss of Sweden's
eminent academic and colour investigator, Professor Rikard
Kuller.
During the lectures held within the Master Course of Colour in
Architecture at the Faculty of Architecture-Lisbon Technical
University, Professor Emeritus Byron Mikellides created a link
-in the mind and the heart- with Professor Rikard Kuller's
research, through the presentation of his conceptual affiliations
as well as those that are only made possible when based on
respect and friendship.
Professor Rikard Kuller's extensive and profound work covers
essential aspects of colour and light in the environment, from
the study of how colour and light impacts the perception of a
room to the preservation of the well being of human beings in
regard to the broad bio-cultural condition.
We know that advances in any field of knowledge build on what
went before and we are all always "on the shoulders of giants",
therefore, Professor Rikard Kuller's memory will be honoured
by all of us who treasure his work as seed for further study.

CARTA DEL ADIOS' FOR DR. ANDERS HRD
The APCOR - The Portuguese Colour Association conveys
condolences on the death of the distinguished Swedish colour
researcher, Dr. Anders Hrd.
Dr. Anders Hrd has given us a testimony of the importance of
serving the community through his dedication to the AIC, and
for a lifetime dedication to the study of colour he was awarded
the 'doctor honoris causa' at Chalmers Technical University and
the AIC Judd Award , together with Lars Sivik and Gunnar
Tonnquist.
The dissemination of his research and its application to
environmental contexts further the development of a global
language of colour, one which many APCOR researchers use
in their academic post-graduate level studies as well as for
architectural design interventions that range the urban scale.
Forty years ago, Dr. Anders Hrd presented a prototype for the
NCS Atlas and has, since then, illuminated many colour students,
researchers and professionals, by giving an example of how
the inspired heart and mind can innovate and enthusiastically
pursue a dream!
