A Constitutive Model of Ligaments and TendonsAccounting for Fiber-Matrix Interaction
Ratchada Sopakayang and Gerhard A. Holzapfel
Abstract-In this study, a new constitutive model is developedto describe the hyperelastic behavior of collagenous tissues witha parallel arrangement of collagen fibers such as ligamentsand tendons. The model is formulated using a continuumapproach incorporating the structural changes of the maintissue components: collagen fibers, proteoglycan-rich matrix andfiber-matrix interaction. The mechanical contribution of theinteraction between the fibers and the matrix is simply expressedby a coupling term. The structural change of the collagen fibers isincorporated in the constitutive model to describe the activationof the fibers under tissue straining. Finally, the constitutive modelcan easily describe the stress-stretch nonlinearity which occurswhen a ligament/tendon is axially stretched. This study shows thatthe interaction between the fibers and the matrix contributes tothe mechanical tissue response. Therefore, the model may leadto a better understanding of the physiological mechanisms ofligaments and tendons under axial loading.

I. INTRODUCTION
THE purpose of this work is to develop a simple constitutive model that can describe the hyperelastic behavior of
ligaments and tendons. In previous studies, phenomenologicaland structural models of ligaments and tendons have beenformulated by accounting for the physiology of their mainstructural components, i.e. collagen fibers and proteoglycanrich matrix [8, !O]. These models are not considering oneimportant contributor to the mechanical behavior of ligamentsand tendons which is the interaction between the fibers andthe matrix. The fiber-matrix interaction has been identifiedthat it plays a significant role on the elastic and viscoelasticproperties of ligaments and tendons [2,5] and other tissues[1,3,7]. Although some previous works incorporated the interaction into their models [2,5], the mechanism of the couplingbetween the fibers and the matrix is still unclear and nccdmore advanced studies. Therefore, in the present work, wedevelop a new mathematical model of ligaments and tendonsfor describing the tensile response. The model is formulatedby using a continuum approach incorporating the structuralchanges of their main components: the fibers, the matrix andthe fiber-matrix interaction. The specification of the work isdescribed here as follows.

II. MATHEMATICAL FORMULATION
A. Strain-Energy Function
The strain-energy function is assumed to be composed ofthree components which are based on the main structure ofthe tissues and their mechanisms. Therefore, the strain-energyfunction of ligaments and tendons, say W, are generatedfrom the contributions originating from the collagen fibers,the matrix and the fiber-matrix interaction. Thus,
where WM is the energy stored in the matrix, WF is that of thefibers, WFM is the strain energy of the fiber-matrix interactionand P(I4) is the cumulative density function of the stretchedfihers. Tn addition, L, is the first invariant of the right CauchyGreen tensor C and 14 = C : aD Q<) ao is the fourth invariantof C and aD, where ao describes the direction of the collagenfibers in the reference configuration, see, e.g., [4J.
The matrix is assumed to behave according to a neoHookean material so that
(2)
where p. is the shear modulus. The mechanical response of thefibers is modeled as
(3)
where k is a material parameter. The mechanical contributionof the interaction between the fibers and the matrix is modeledas
WFM(h,I4) = ~k(Il - 3)(I4 - 1)2. (4)
The collagen fibers arc assumed to become straight atdifferent stretches As :;:.1, defined by thc Wcibull probabilitydensity function [8, I0], i.e,
p(As) = ~ (As; 1) 0-1 exp]-[(As- 1)/;3l"}.
where a > 0 is the so-called shape parameter and fJ > 0 is theso-called scale parameter. Therefore, the cumulative densityfunction P of thc stretched fibers follows with (5)
(5)
P(I4) = jI4p(As)dAs = 1 -exp{-[(I4 -1)/(-1]"}.
Finally, the strain-energy function (1) of the tissue can be
(6)
rewritten as
W= !::_(h - 3) + (1 - exp]-[(14 - 1)/8]"})k(I4 - 1)22+cxp{-[(14 - 1)/(1]"}~k(Il - 3)(I4 - 1)2 (7)
B. Cauchy Stress Tensor
Ligaments and tendons are classified as anisotropic materials with one family of collagen fibers. Therefore, by (just)considering the invariants hand 14, the Cauchy stress tensorT of the tissue can be expressed as follows [9]
where B is the left Cauchy-Green tensor, I denotes the secondorder unit tensor and p is as an indeterminate Lagrangemultiplier which can be identified as a hydrostatic pressure[4]. In addition, in (8) a = Fa., denotes the fiber direction inthe deformed configuration, and F is the deformation gradient.By recalling the strain-energy function (7), the differentiationof VV can be written as
8W f.1 /1 2 exW1= 8h =2"+2"k(14-1) cxp{-[(I4-1)/(:i] }, (9)
~~ = 2k(I4 - 1)
+2k(I4 -l)cxp{ -[(I4 -1)/;3]"} [~(Il - 3)-1
+i ( 14 (; 1)" _ a:tt, _ 3) ( 14 ; 1)Q]. (10)
In this study we focus on the description of the tensileresponse. We assume that the tensile loading, i.e. A, is appliedto the specimen in the x-direction which is also assumed tobe the fiber direction, while Xl and X2 are the transversedirections. Therefore, F takes on the matrix form
[AI 0 0]
[F] = 0 A2 0 .o 0 x
The tissue is assumed to be an incompressible material,therefore thc incompressibility constraint must be satisfied, i.c.
We then obtain
Then, the left Cauchy-Green tensor B takes on the followingmatrix form
while the identity tensor has the matrix form
[1 0 0]
[I]= 0 1 0 .001
Tn the undeformed configuration, the unit fiber orientationvector is
lao] = [00 i]".Since the deformed fiber direction a is related to the undeformed direction ao according to [a]= [F][ao], we obtain thestructure tensor a ® a in the matrix form as
[0 0 0][a ®a] = 00 0 .o 0 ,\2
The invariants can then be expressed as
t,= tr[B] = Ai + A~ + A2 = ~ + ,\2, ( 18)
[ 214 = lao] . B][ao] = A . (19)
(8) By substituting Eqs. (13)-(15), (17) and (19) into (8), weobtain the matrix
[T] = [~W~-p ~W~_p ~ ]o 0 2A2Wl + 2A4W4 - p
The boundary condition of the problem is
Tll = T22 = o.
. (20)
(21)
By applying this boundary condition to the Cauchy stressmatrix [T] in (20), we can then find the Lagrange multiplierp as
p = ~WI = ~+ ~k(I4 - 1)2cxp{-[(I4 - 1)/;3]"}, (22)where (9) has been used. By substituting pinto T33 of Eq. (20),we then obtain
(II) (23)
(12)
where (9) and (10) have been used.Finally, we substitute the expression of the invariants from
Eqs. (I8h and (l9)z into T33, then we find an explicitrelationship between the Cauchy stress T33 and the stretchA of the tissue as
T33 = f.1A2- ~ +4kA4(A2 -1)HkA4(A2 - 1)exp{_[(A2 - 1)/ (-J]"}

(IS)A. Parameter Estimation
There are four parameters in the model, i.e. (p., k, 0', (j),requiring an estimation in order to describe the tensile behaviorof ligaments and tendons. In general all parameters in themodel can be found by curve fitting the model to the tensiledata. Because of the lack of some experimental results in thepublished papers [2,6], a complete set of parameters obtainedby the curve fitting could not be found. The appropriatevalues of parameters for any specific type of ligaments andtendons can usually be found by validating the model withthe experimental data of some specific tests.
(16)
(17)
,
For this work, in order to demonstrate the ability of theproposed model in describing the tensile behavior of ligamentsand tendons, the values of the parameters J.L and k are assumedto be fixed values of 1MPa. Then, the model is curve fittedwith the tensile experimental data of sheep flexor tendons, asdocumented in [2,6]. Hence, the rest of the parameters areestimated from the curve fitting. and are (t = 1.431 and (J =0.143 with R2 "" 0.9913. As shown in Fig. 1, the model hasa good fit with the experimental data and can describe themechanical characterization under tension quite well.

B. Influence of'Model Parameters
The influence of the model parameters on the tensileresponse was studied by varying the parameters as shownin Figs 2-5. Thereby, each material parameter was variedindividually, while the remaining parameters were fixed bythe original values obtained by curve fitting of the proposedmodel to the published stress-strain data [2,6]. The Figs 2and 3 illustrate the influence of the parameters fl' and k onthe characteristic tensile behavior, respectively. As shown inFig. 2, an increase of IJ causes an increase of the modulus ofthe ligaments/tendons over the stretch in every stretch regionof the tensile behavior. In a similar way, an increase of k leadsto an increase of the modulus of the tissues over the stretch,but not so much at the lower stretch domain, as shown inFig. 3. At the low stretch region of the tensile behavior, thedifferent values of k do not affect the tensile behavior but theyplaya significant role at the higher stretch domain.The effects of the shape parameter a, and the scale parame
ter /3 of the Weibull probability density function that describedthe characteristic of the recruitment of collagen fibers arepresented in Figs 4 and 5, respectively. As can be seen fromFig. 4, for smaller values of (Y, the relationship between theCauchy stress and the stretch of ligaments/tendons show lessnonlinearity. For larger values of n, the curves show morenonlinearity of the modulus of the tissue influenced by therecruitment of fibers. However, the values of the stress ofthe tissues over stretch for each a are not much different.Therefore, a can mainly influence the nonlinearity of themodulus of the tissue but it does not play the role to increasethe modulus over stretch. In another way, the scale parameter f3influences both the nonlinearity and the change in the modulus

over stretch, as shown in Fig. 5. For larger values of (3, thestress-strain curve of the tissue shows less nonlinearity, andsmaller values of modulus of the tissues over stretch.
IV. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION
A new mathematical model is presented to describe the nonlinear elastic behavior of ligaments and tendons under tensileloading. This mathematical model is formulated by accountingfor the mechanical contribution of the main structural units ofligaments and tendons, i.c. the collagen fibers, the matrix andthe fiber-matrix interaction. The model has four parameterst u, k, n, ;3) representing the mechanical characteristic of theinternal structure of the tissue. The parameters /-l and k arerelated to the matrix and the collagen fibers, respectively,while the progression of the fiber recruitment is captured bythe Weibull probability distribution function equipped with theshape parameter n and the scale parameter !J. According tothe results section, it can be seen that the model can describethe typical characteristic of the tensile behavior of ligamentsand tendons very well. The curve fitting of the model and theexperimental data obtained from the published papers [2,6]is presented in Fig. I with R2 ::::::0.9913. The study of theparameter variation shows that /-l and k control the level ofthe values of the modulus of ligaments and tendons, as shownin Figs 2 and 3, respectively, while a and ;3 playa role onthe nonlinearity of the modulus of the tissue in the tensilecharacterization, as shown in Figs 4 and 5, respectively. Themodel simulations in Figs 2 and 3 indicate that in a very smallstretch region of the tensile behavior, only the matrix is activeand responsible for load bearing, while the collagen fibers areembedded in the matrix and still wavy. Therefore, the wavycollagen fibers may move along the matrix at the beginning ofthe loading but cannot bear the load. The model suggests thatonly the matrix plays the role of the load bearing element inthe very low stretch domain, while in the larger stretch regionhoth collagen fihers and the matrix are load hearing.
In conclusion, a new constitutive model was proposedable to describe the mechanical response of ligaments andtendons under tension. The information about the orientationof the collagen fibers was incorporated into the continuummodel, and the nonlinearity of the elastic behavior of thetissue could be demonstrated. The work has shown a simpleand straightforward way to formulate an explicit relationshipbetween the Cauchy stress and the stretch A of the tissue.Certainly, we need more detailed (experimental) informationabout the fiber-matrix interaction of ligaments and tendonswhich would be very valuable for refined modeling. The modelcan easily be extended to describe other connective tissuesor other hypcrclastic materials with morc fiber families andfiber dispersion. The modcl can also be extended to describea viscoelastic response such as creep and relaxation along withthe related hysteresis which for many materials such as softtissues, rubbers and polymers is required.
