A Or questra do Algarv e ( OA) es treou-se no F estival Int ernacional de Música do
Algarve em 2002. Destinada a dotar a R egião de uma es trutura cultural de elevado nível
artístico, desenvolve, desde então, uma actividade multif acetada. A OA é composta por
músicos de várias nacionalidades e ao longo destes anos tem sido dirigida por maestros de
envergadura internacional, entre os quais Joji Hattori, Wolfgang Czeipek, Thomas Kalb, Joel
Levine, Nino Lepore, etc., e por vários maestros portugueses, tais como Osvaldo Ferreira,
Cesário Costa, Vasco Pearce de Azevedo, Joana Carneiro. Contou ainda com a colaboração
de solistas de renome, como Mário Laginha e Bernardo Sassetti, Artur Pizarro, Maria Orán,
Ute Lemper, etc.
A crítica especializada é unânime nas apr eciações quant o à qualidade artís tica des ta
Orquestra, reafirmando, cada vez mais, o seu lugar no panorama da música clássica.
The Algarv e Or chestra (A O) made its début in the Int ernational Music F estival
of the Algarve in 2002. Destined to endow the Algarve with a cultural structure possessing
a high artis tic level, it has sinc e then been de veloping a multifaceted activity. The AO is
composed of musicians from several nationalities and throughout the years it has been con-
ducted by conductors of international importance, such as Joji Hattori, Wolfgang Czeipek,
Thomas Kalb, Joel Levine and Nino Lepore among others, and also by several Portuguese
conductors, such as Osvaldo Ferreira, Cesário Costa, Vasco Pearce de Azevedo and Joana
Carneiro. It also had the collaboration of famous soloists like Mário Laginha and Bernardo
Sassetti, Artur Pizarro, Maria Orán, Ute Lemper, etc.
The specialized critics are unanimous in their opinion r elating to the orchestra’s artistic
quality, which has been increasingly reaffirming its place in the classical music scene.

Em pleno Verão, o concelho enche-se de calor humano , de turis tas que nos visitam pela
primeira vez, de outros que nos revisitam a cada ano, pelo património, pela cultura e pelas
paisagens, que constituem a nossa maior riqueza.
O património, a cultura e o turismo, convivem em harmonia. A monumentalidade do centro
Histórico milenar, as praias de magníficos areais e águas limpas e calmas, a rique za gas-
tronómica, aliadas a uma oferta cultural e de lazer orientada para todos os públicos e todas
as idades, fazem de Tavira uma cidade agradável para quem nela vive e um destino atraente
para quem nos visita, independentemente das suas preferências e interesses.
E porque Verão é sinónimo de animação , não poderíamos deix ar de apresentar mais uma
edição do “Verão em Tavira” que irá, certamente, encher as ruas da cidade de cor, alegria e
boa disposição.
Num ano particularmente difícil para o nosso país em termos económicos e financeiros, em que
as medidas de contenção passam necessariamente por cortes de despesas aos mais diversos
níveis, não quisemos deixar de brindar os tavirenses, e todos aqueles que nos visitam, com um
excelente programa de actividades que , ainda que es truturado com base em r ecursos mais
limitados, nada perde em termos da qualidade e diversidade dos eventos apresentados.
Continuamos a apostar no teatro, nas artes plásticas, nas exposições, nas feiras, nos passeios
temáticos, nos concertos, no cinema, no património … enfim, num c onjunto de actividades
que farão do seu “Verão em Tavira” uma experiência inesquecível.

In the middle of summer, Tavira becomes full of human warmth, tourists who visit us for the
first time and other tourists who visit us every year for the heritage, the culture and the land-
scapes which establish our greatest treasure.
Heritage, culture and tourism live in harmony. The monumentality of the ancient his toric
centre, the beaches with magnificent sand and clean , calm water, the gastronomic richness
and a culture and leisure offer oriented toward audiences of all kinds and ages, make Tavira
a pleasant city f or people who liv e there and f or those who visit us, r egardless of their
preferences and interests.
And because summer means entertainment, we could not help presenting another “Verão em
Tavira”, which will certainly fill the streets with colour, joy and cheerfulness.
In a particularly difficult year for our country at economic and financial levels, with cutback
measures which necessarily include cost containment at various levels, we did not want to
stop offering people from Tavira and people who visit us an e xcellent activity programme
which did not lose any quality or event variety, despite our limited resources.
We are still committed to theatre, plastic arts, exhibitions, fairs, thematic walks, concerts,
film, heritage… meaning that we are still committed to an ensemble of activities which will
make your “Verão em Tavira” an unforgettable experience.

Portugal pr epara a candidatur a da Dieta Medit errânica a P atrimónio Imat erial da
Humanidade da UNESCO.
À semelhança de outros países (Espanha, Itália, Grécia e Marrocos), Portugal seleccionou
uma região emblemática ou representativa para esta candidatura.
A escolha recaiu em Tavira, por mérito do seu património imaterial ancestral ainda muito
vivo em todo o território, pela diversidade paisagística, produtiva e cultural e uma iden-
tidade fortemente mediterrânica.
Na frente litoral a Ria Formosa, um ecossistema lagunar e oceânico possuidor de várias
classificações internacionais (Rede Natura 2000, Ramsar, Protecção de Aves Selvagens)
de grande riqueza biológica, a produção de sal conhecida pelo menos desde o período
islâmico, apanha de mariscos e bivalves, moliscicultura, viveiros de ostras, os arraiais do
atum e as pescas…
No barrocal a produção de citrinos, azeite em três dos cinco lagares do Algarve em fun-
cionamento, vinho, medronho, figo, alfarroba, frutos secos e vários telheiros tradicionais
em funcionamento em Santa Catarina. Na serra a produção florestal, o mel, a agricultura
de sequeiro, as tecedeiras de Cachopo…
A dieta mediterrânica é um estilo de vida representativo das sociabilidades do sul da Eu-
ropa e da bacia do Mediterrâneo com as suas formas particulares de convívio e celebração.
Tavira conserva vivas muitas manifestações culturais como o presépio algarvio (com as
suas laranjas e “searinhas”), as charolas, os santos populares, os magustos… A dieta
mediterrânica é também um excelente contributo para uma alimentação humana mais
saudável e para melhores indicadores de saúde da população, com maior consumo de
vegetais frescos, peixe, azeite, pão, cereais e frutos secos.
Tavira integra há vários anos a rede das Slow Cities, optando por se afirmar uma cidade
tranquila, de cultura e património, ambientalmente preservada.
A candidatura UNESCO permitirá a actualização do in ventário do Património Cultural
Imaterial da região e o estabelecimento de um Plano de Salvaguarda com medidas con-
cretas de protecção o qual irá certamente dar um impulso renovado às extraordinárias
potencialidades de Tavira, do Algarve e de Portugal.
Tavira and the Mediterranean DietPortugal is preparing the candidacy of the Medit erranean Diet as Intangible Cultur al
Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO.
Similarly to other countries (Spain, Italy, Greece and Morocco), Portugal has chosen an
emblematic or representative region for this candidacy.
The choice fell on Tavira, not only for the merit of its ancient intangible cultural heritage
that is still much alive in the territory, but also for its landscape, productive and cultural
diversity and for a strongly Mediterranean identity.
On the coastal front, there is Ria F ormosa, a lagoon and oc eanic ecosystem which has
several international classifications (Natura 2000 Network, Ramsar, Wild Bird Protection)
of great biological richnes s. There are also other activities such as salt pr oduction,
known at least since the Islamic period, shellfish and bivalve harvesting, shellfish farming,
oyster farms, tuna festivals and the art of fishing…
In barrocal, there is citrus fruit production, olive oil in three of the five oil presses exis-
ting in the Algarve, wine, arbutus berries, figs, carobs and dried fruit and in Santa Cata-
rina there are several traditional telheiros (a kind of barn used f or storing and drying
grain) still functioning. In the mountains there is forest production as well as honey, dry
agriculture and the weavers from Cachopo…
The Mediterranean diet is a lifestyle which represents sociabilities from Southern Europe
and the Mediterranean basin with its particular ways of social relations and celebration.
Tavira has been k eeping alive many cultural expressions such as the nativity sc ene
typical from the Algarve (with its or anges and “searinhas” [miniature wheat fields]),
the charolas (traditional groups singing New Year’s carols), Popular Saints, magustos(traditional celebration in which people eat roasted chestnuts and try the new wine)...
The Mediterranean diet is also an excellent contribution for a healthier human nutrition
and also for better indicators regarding the population’s health, with higher consumption
of fresh vegetables, fish, olive oil, bread, cereals and dried fruit.
For several years, Tavira has been part of Slow Cities network, choosing to be a tranquil
city, with its culture, its heritage and being environmentally preserved.
The UNESC O candidacy will allo w the updating of the r egion’s Intangible Cultur al
Heritage inventory and the establishment of a Safeguard Plan with specific protection
measures, which will certainly give a renewed boost to the extraordinary potentialities
existing in Tavira, in the Algarve and in Portugal.

DIOGO TAVARES DE ATAÍDEENTALHADOR DE PEDRA (1711-1765) Diogo Tavares de Ataíde foi o mais importante canteiro e arquitecto
algarvio do século X VIII. Nascido em 17 11, vê o seu talent o reco-
nhecido a partir de 1742 quando assume o projecto de remodelação
da fachada da igreja do Carmo de F aro. Morre em 1765 deixando
obras que o at estam como habilitado canteiro e projectista, co-
nhecedor de aspect os característicos da ar quitectura barroca, a
qual procurou difundir, desafiando a arquitectura algarvia a aproxi-
mar-se das novas tendências que se praticavam no resto do país.
A mestria com que transpôs para a pedra as formas que habitual-
mente se encontravam na arte da talha v aleram-lhe o expressivo
epíteto de entalhador de pedra. É também reconhecida a sua fa-
ceta de “restaurador de edifícios”, tendo neste âmbito participado
em várias obras de restauro e renovação de edifícios antigos.
Em Tavira foi tido em grande consideração junto dos mais ilustres
mecenas e encomendadores locais, realizando várias obras das
quais se des tacam as r econstruções do C onvento da Gr aça, do
Palácio da G aleria ou das igr ejas do Espírito Santo e São Pedr o
Gonçalves Telmo.
No âmbito das Jornadas Eur opeias do Património 2011, o Museu
Municipal de Tavira dedica a es te artista algarvio do século X VIII
uma pequena e xposição na Casa André Pilart e, as sinalando o
tricentenário do seu nascimento.
DIOGO TAVARES DE ATAÍDESTONE CARVER (1711-1765)Diogo Tavares de Ataíde was the most important stonemason and
architect from the Algarv e in the 18th c entury. Born in 17 11, his
talent was acknowledged from 1742, when he took on the project
to remodel the façade of Igreja do Carmo in Faro. He died in 1765,
leaving works which confirm him as a qualified s tonemason and
architect who knew characteristic aspects of Baroque architecture,
which he tried t o make known, thus challenging the Algarv e’s
architecture t o bec ome closer t o the ne w tr ends carried out
throughout the rest of the country.
The artistry with which he transferred to stone the shapes usually
found in woodcarving gave him the significant epithet of s tone
carver. His feature of “building restorer” is also acknowledged, see-
ing that he participated in several restoration and renovation works
on ancient buildings.
In Tavira, he was highly regarded by the most distinguished patrons
and local commissioners, carrying out se veral remarkable works,
namely the r econstruction of C onvento da Gr aça, P alácio da
Galeria or of Igr eja do Espírit o Santo and Igr eja de São Pedr o
Gonçalves Telmo.
In the context of Jornadas Eur opeias do Património 2011 (Euro-
pean Heritage Da ys 2011), Museu Municipal de T avira dedicates
a small exhibition (in Casa André Pilart e) to this artis t from the
Algarve who liv ed in the 18th c entury, c elebrating the 300th
anniversary of his birth.

“Pintura Interrogada” de LUIS GORDILLO
PRÉMIO VELASQUEZ 2007Patente de 9 de Julho a 10 Setembro
Luis Gordillo (Sevilha, 1934) é uma das referências maiores da arte espanholae europeia da actualidade.Em 2007 foi-lhe atribuído o Prémio Velásquez, o mais importante de Espanha,de acordo com as propostas dos principais directores de Museus de Espanhae especialistas de arte, entregue em cerimónia presidida pelo Rei Juan Carlosno Museu do Prado.
Viveu na década de 50 em Paris, ligando-se ao informalismo, o seu “primeiroamor”, e acompanhou na década seguinte o movimento da Popart. Nos anos80 evoluiu para uma linguagem abstracta de grande intensidade onde se po-derá hoje encontrar uma busca da superação, partes da realidade, elementosimaginados, plenamente abstractos, simbólicos e narrativos,…Vicente Todoli, Director da Tate Modern de Londres classifica a obra de LuisGordillo como “fresca, inovadora e cheia de t ensão…” e Borja V illel directordo Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Barcelona afirma que “sem ele uma boaparte da nossa arte actual seria impensável” (El País). Em 2007 Gordillo comissariou a sua e xposição antológica Iceberg Tropical:Antologica 1959-2007 no Museu Reina Sofia de Madrid.
Esta primeira exposição de Luis Gor dillo em Portugal, par a além do P alácioda Galeria, estará ainda patente nos próximos meses no C entro Cultural deCascais/Fundação D. Luís I e no Centro de arte Contemporânea Graça Moraisde Bragança.
O programa de exposições do Museu Municipal de T avira/Palácio da Galeriamantém há anos uma forte relação com a investigação e divulgação da históriae património de Tavira e com a sua população, simultaneamente vem promo-vendo a divulgação da arte contemporânea de universos artísticos reconheci-dos e personalizados numa linha de informação e actualização dos públicos.Nestes últimos anos passaram pelas salas do Palácio da Galeria exposições deTàpies, Ângelo de Sousa, Alberto Carneiro, Bartolomeu dos Santos, Costa Pi-nheiro, Júlio Pomar, Joana Vasconcelos, René Bértholo, Cabrita Reis, GerardCastello Lopes, a colecção Berardo (Picasso, Dali, Miró, Pollock, Duchamp…),mas também alguns universos artísticos mais personalizados da região algarvia.A exposição de Luis Gordillo será certamente mais um marco importante nahistória do Museu Municipal de Tavira. Luis Gordillo (born in Seville, in 1934) is one of the most renowned examples
of Spanish and European art nowadays.In 2007, he received the Velasquez Award, the most important award in Spain,according to the main Spanish museum dir ectors and art e xperts in a c ere-mony presided by the King Juan Carlos I at Museo del Prado.
During the 50s he lived in Paris, adhering to Informalism, his “first love”, andin the following decade he followed the Pop Art movement closely. In the 80s,Gordillo evolved towards an abstract language of great intensity where nowa-days it is possible to find a search for the power to overcome things, “partsof reality, imagined elements, entirely abstract, symbolic and narrative…”Vicente Todoli, director of the Tate Modern in London, describes the work ofLuis Gordillo as “ fresh, innovative and full of t ension…” Also Borja V illel, director of the Bar celona Museum of C ontemporary Art says that “withouthim, a great part of our present art would be unthinkable.” (El País). In 2007, Gordillo superintended his Iceberg Tropical: Antologica 1959-2007 at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid.
Besides Palácio da G aleria, this firs t exhibition by Luis Gordillo in Portugalwill also be held in the next months at Centro Cultural de Cascais/FundaçãoD. Luís I and Centro de Arte Contemporânea Graça Morais in Bragança.
Over the years, the exhibition’s programme belonging to Museu Municipal deTavira/Palácio da Galeria has been keeping a strong connection with the re-search and divulgation of Tavira’s history and heritage and with its population.Simultaneously, it has been pr omoting the divulgation of c ontemporary artof artistic universes acknowledged and personalized in a line of informationand audience update. These last few years, Palácio da Galeria has held exhibitions by Tàpies, Ângelode Sousa, Albert o Carneiro, Bartolomeu dos Sant os, Costa Pinheiro, JúlioPomar, Joana Vasconcelos, René Bértholo, Cabrita Reis and Gérard CastelloLopes. It e xhibited the Ber ardo C ollection (Picas so, Dalí, Miró, Pollock,Duchamp…) but also some more personalized artistic universes of the Algarve. The exhibition by Luis Gor dillo will c ertainly be another landmark in the history of Museu Municipal de Tavira.

With the audio guide system produced by the city council, everyone can choose and downloadthe programmes for the visits to the places of interest in the district.The audio guides present different suggestions and propose three itineraries within the city:Vila-a-Dentro (Within the Village), Além da Pont e (On the Other Side of the Bridge ) andAquém da Ponte (On This Side of the Bridge ). The most relevant places are identified andpresent a brief historical and patrimonial description. This e vent es tablishes a tr ajectory on this f amily’s phot ographic spoils, which allows us to reconstruct part of the History of Photography throughout the last 100years, its technical development and mainly the development of images, accordingto the following topics: portraits, daily life, the urban de velopment of the city andsome of the main events between the beginning of the 20th century and the begin-ning of the 21st century. No C onvento das Bernar das r espira-se 500 anos de
História. Foi o maior edifício c onventual do Algarve e o
único da Ordem de Cister em toda a região. Voltado para
o sapal da Ria Formosa, o Convento das Bernardas recebe
luz inconfundível deste tesouro natural.
A pouc os metr os, a pont e antiga sobr e o rio Gilão
reforça a história deste edifício. O desafio lançado pelo En-
treposto Gestão Imobiliária foi aceite pelo arquitecto Ed-
uardo Souto Moura: transformar um monumento histórico
em habitação.
Com 71 anos de idade e mais de 45 de carr eira, Carlos do
Carmo c ontinua a surpr eender. Depois de tr azer
inovação, abrindo no vos caminhos ao F ado, Carlos do
Carmo junta-se agora à Claus Nymark Big Band para can-
tar o gr andioso r eportório de Fr ank Sinatr a, num
espectáculo surpreendente e imperdível.
It is possible to breathe 500 years of his tory in Convento
das Bernardas. It was the biggest conventual building of the
Algarve and the only one belonging to the Order of Cister-
cians in the entire region. Facing the marshland of Ria For-
mosa, Convento das Bernardas receives unmistakable light
from this natural treasure.
A few metres away, the ancient bridge over the river Gilão
emphasizes this building’s history. The challenge proposed
by Entreposto Gestão Imobiliária was accepted by the ar-
chitect E duardo Sout o Mour a: t o tr ansform a his torical
monument into a place to live.
With 71 years old and a career of more than 45 years, Car-
los do Carmo continues to surprise us. After bringing inno-
vation, opening new ways to Fado, he now joined Claus
Nymark Big Band to sing the great repertoire belonging to
Frank Sinatra in a surprising and unmissable show.

Carmo Rebelo de Andrade nasceu e cresceu no Fado,
daí sair-lhe tão espontâneo c omo respirar. “Nunca vi
a Música como uma coisa especial, sempre esteve tão
presente na minha vida que seria c omo querer distin-
guir um braço mais importante do que o outro” afirma
Carminho. Fado, o álbum de es treia, editado no pas-
sado dia 1 de Junho de 2010 , tem merecido os mais
rasgados elogios.
Carmo Rebelo de Andrade was born and gr ew up in
the middle of Fado, thus making it as spontaneous for
her as breathing. “I have never seen music as a special
thing, it has al ways been so present in my life that it
would be like wanting to choose which of our arms is
more important”, says Carminho. Fado, her first album,
was released on June 1, 2010 and has been w orthy of
the most sincere praises.

Two years after preparing a future, Os Golpes was created
in 2008. It exists in a country fascinated by its possibili-

Celebrado em Junho o seu 5º. Aniv ersário, a “casa dos livros”
(significado de biblioteca em grego), absorve o que de melhor
apresenta a tradição e mercado livreiros, oferece-lhe um fundo
documental v ariado e depur ado das modas (irr emediavel-
mente) efémeras com jóias da música e cinema univ ersais, e
reinventa-se enquanto centro de inf ormação, conhecimento,
educação (colectiva, mas também auto-formação) e lazer com
muitos leitores já fidelizados e novos públicos sempre por con-
quistar/servir.
Neste Ano Internacional do Voluntariado, a biblioteca acolhe
vários eventos do projecto concelhio Tavira Ilimitada, continua
a contar com a colaboração, desde 2008, do Baú das L etras,
grupo de voluntários que nela dinamiza ses sões de promoção
de leitura aos sábados à tarde, e fortalece o desígnio, enquanto
biblioteca pública, de inclusão social, promoção da paz e enri-
quecimento da sociedade c om um micro-fundo em língua es-
trangeira, de forma a apoiar o extraordinário social multiétnico
da cidade de Tavira, que conta com cidadãos de 60 nacionali-
dades, para além dos já habituais visitantes.
A programação cultural para o V erão apostará em hor as do
conto temáticas (mar, férias, viagens e diferenças e aprendiza-
gens culturais) e jogos inspirados na literatura oral para os mais
novos, não dispensando apr esentação de obr as, workshops,
conferências, encontros com escritores, exposições e activida-
des de carácter interdisciplinar, que cruzarão música, literatura
e a sétima arte para o público adulto.

(this is the meaning of library in Greek) takes in the best there
is in tradition and in the book market, offering you a diversified
documentary fund that is (irremediably) cleansed of ephemeral
trends with jewels of universal music and cinema. It r einvents
itself as an information, knowledge, leisure and education (col-
lective education, but also self-tuition) c entre alr eady with
many loyal readers and new audiences to conquer/serve.
In this International Year of Volunteers, the library welcomes
several events carried out b y the project Tavira Ilimitada and
since 2008 it also has the c ollaboration of Baú das L etras, a
group of volunteers which carries out sessions to promote read-
ing on Saturdays afternoon. As a public libr ary, it encourages
the aim for social inclusion, the promotion of peace and the im-
provement of society with a f oreign language micr o-fund in
order to support the extraordinary social multiethnicity that ex-
ists in T avira, a city with citiz ens fr om 60 nationalities, not
counting with the usual visitors.
The cultural programme for the summer will include thematic
storytelling hours (sea, holidays, travels and cultural differences
and learnings) and games inspired in oral literature for the chil-
dren. It also includes the pr esentation of literary works, work-
shops, lectures, meetings with writers, exhibitions and activities
of an interdisciplinary nature which will c ombine music, litera-
ture and film for an adult audience.
